    Title: Killer

    Author: Stephen Carpenter
    Narrator: Noah Michael Levine
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 50 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-19-13

Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Police Procedurals
    Publisher's Summary:
For fans of Robert Parker's smart but tough-as-nails heroes, screenwriter Stephen Carpenter introduces a new character to the mystery genre, Jack Rhodes. Jack is an author and former boxer who was on his way to literary success when his life was blown apart by the horrific suicide of his fiancee.
Devastated, Jack went on a fifteen-month alcoholic spiral into near oblivion before eventually working past his demons to become a best-selling crime novelist. But just as Jack is finishing his fourth book about a vicious serial killer, the LAPD interrupts his quiet routine with news of what appears to be a copycat murder from his first book. There's just one problem - the murder took place before Jack's book was published.
Jack begins to investigate, using techniques he learned through his meticulous research with police and FBI investigators. To his horror, Jack soon discovers that each of the murders he imagined are real...down to the most harrowing details. And Jack is Suspect Number One...
Jack winds up on the run, a fugitive haunted by his past and hunted by the very cops and FBI agents he has befriended. Jack must use every resource he has to prevent the murder of a woman he knows will be next in his series of novels. He must piece together shattered memories from the fragments he recalls during his drunken fifteen-month blackout.

I'd kill to get the next Jack Rhodes book now
Jack Rhodes is a best selling author in a series about a ruthless killer. As a connection is exposed between real life murders and Jack's fictional ones, we have an important question to ponder. Had he actually researched his material first hand by participating in a few gruesome decapitations before putting pen to paper? Or ... is our killer someone else. Jack Rhodes certainly looks guilty to either the reader or his contemporaries at different times as two narratives develop.
One story is in the present and talks about Jack's tragic loss of the love of his life. This is followed by a drunken blacked out mourning period of several months and then redemption when Jack stays sober by pouring his energies into writing. Was his spine chilling descriptions of murders that vaunted him unto the bestseller lists a repressed memory from his blacked out period, or from a split personality? That question arises after some real life murders are discovered with details that closely resemble Jack's books. Jack Rhodes must deal with recalling lost memories as he is pursued by the law. The other story is about an unfortunate twisted childhood that sounds like it is going to end up with a psychopathic killer.
Narrator Noah Micael Levine does an excellent job of weaving these two story-lines to an epic confrontation. Getting the next Jack Rhodes book is now definitely on my to do list. Unfortunately, the author still has publishing the next book on his to do list.
Early on I didn't know if I was going to be following a serial killer who was an author or an author who wrote about serial killers.

    Title: Gone
Subtitle: A Jack Caffery Thriller, Book 5
    Author: Mo Hayder
    Narrator: Steven Crossley
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 14 hrs and 26 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-25-13
    Publisher: Dreamscape Media, LLC
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 146 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Police Procedurals
    Publisher's Summary:
Jack Caffery's newest case seems like a routine carjacking, a crime he's seen plenty of times before. But as the hours tick by and his investigation morphs into a nightmare, he realizes the sickening truth: the thief wasn't after the car, but the eleven-year-old girl in the backseat. Meanwhile, police diver Sergeant Flea Marley is pursuing her own theory of the case, and what she finds in an abandoned, half-submerged tunnel could put her in grave danger.
The carjacker is always a step ahead of the Major Crime Investigation Unit, toying with their minds in taunting letters, and ready to strike again. As the chances for his victims grow slimmer, Jack and Flea race to fit the pieces together in time.
    Critic Reviews:
"Riveting... Hayder keeps the tension high... The meticulously crafted plot is heightened by Hayder's skillful evocation of mood as she summons the specter of a highly intelligent criminal who is taking great satisfaction from every parent's worst nightmare. A captivating thriller." (Booklist)
"A brilliantly plotted mystery that keeps you guessing not only who the villain is, but what exactly he's after... First-rate mystery that takes full advantage of the wintry, moonlit West Country and the unusual skills of its lady diver." (Kirkus Reviews)
"A carjacking goes from bad to horrifying in Hayder's gripping fifth thriller." (Publishers Weekly)
"Chilling... Shocks are in store." (The New York Times Book Review)
"It's a tribute to Hayder's powers as a suspense writer that she completely turns the over-familiar premise of this novel inside out and upside down. The more pages of Gone that we captivated readers turn, the farther away we get from cliched thriller conventions." (The Washington Post)

    Thank you , thank you!
I'm amazed at the how I can see everything in my minds eye when listening to the marvel of Mo Hayder's storytelling combined with a narration so dead on. It will be a sad day if there is ever an end.
Good listen, not exceptional, as expected
What made the experience of listening to Gone the most enjoyable?
This book is an Edgar Award winner so I had high hopes. This was the first Jack Caffery novel I read and I found that I should have read them in order. There were many unexplained events, characters and references to earlier Jack Caffery books. While I still was able to comprehend the storyline I feel that I would have enjoyed the book more if I was able to have had knowledge of the earlier storyline. I am now writing this review after having gone back and listened to the first and second books of the series. In comparison to those I found this one to be disappointingly predictable. In conclusion the story, alone from the rest of the series, was very good I did not find it worthy of a story that has won an Edgar Award.
    Excellent series, deteriorating narration
Mo Hayder has written a fabulous series about the exploits of DI Jack Caffery and Sgt. Flea Marley. As the events in some of the books take place close in time to the previous book, it's helpful to listen to them all in one marathon.
Damien Goodwin, the narrator of Birdman and The Treatment was absolutely excellent. He has a fabulous range of voices and characters.

    Publisher's Summary:
When a cop snaps, he threatens to take a building full of people with him.
Bernie Shepard comes home with a shotgun. He opens the door to his bedroom, and sees what he expected - his wife in bed with another cop. Two pumps of the shotgun take care of them, and Shepard carries out the rest of his plan. Accompanied by his nameless dog, this half-mad young detective goes to the roof of his apartment building, where he has built a small fortress stocked with food, water, and weapons. He loads his guns and awaits the police.
Talking Shepard down falls to Abe Lieberman and Bill Hanrahan, the odd-couple partners in Chicago homicide. As soon as they make contact, Shepard names his demands: He wants to talk to a TV crew and to the new police captain. The building is rigged with explosives, he says, and he is ready to pull the trigger. To stop this renegade cop, Lieberman and Hanrahan will have to kill him - or try to understand what made him snap.

    15 Stars for Lieberman's Allegory!
In this summer of 2016 Americas two political parties are snarling. Their true believers want first-class seats to Utopia in sonic jets. Their opponents arent wrong- instead, theyre evil. Ironic, since the bulk of each group have identical goals: to make humankind happy.
You want ironic, let me tell you about Abe Liebermans closing scene with his daughter here in Liebermans Choice. Shes a vexing young woman he dearly loves whos seeking happiness by taking her two kids and leaving her irritating, yet deeply committed, husband. Are you happy Dad? she asks Liberman. I love you, he replies then continues, But theres a difference between happiness and contentment. And in those last dark-of-the-night-kichen-moments as Stuart Kominskys second Leiberman novel went to black I felt a tear.
Just then a TV somewhere in my home blared a politicians charge that an opponents positions were evil - not wrong, not misguided Evil! Theres no compromise with evil. No debate. No happiness possible in a world where that opponent lives. The audiences roar came muffled through the fog that billows when icy reality smashes against hot feelings.
Oh yeah, theres a distiction between contentment and happiness. But how will we refocus upon contentment when each side's demagogues promise a level of happiness that wields perfection as a weapon to snuff the merely good?
Ill listen to Richard Ferrone read me more of Abe Liebermans path through seemingly irreconcilable moments. This is good writing well read and driven by hopeful skepticism. Theres a difference between the snarling cynicism of a lot of adventure fiction and the optimistic skepticism of Abe Lieberman. A skeptic seeks enough evidence to make decisions while there will never be enough facts to satisfy the cynic. In this cacaphonic political moment I suspect that politicans prefer that we all be cynics Those are citizens easiest to herd.
Meanwhile Kominskys given us Abe Lieberman to nudge us back from lifes sharpest radical edges. Start this series with Liebermans Folly to prepare for Liebermans Choice and follow me onto Liebermans Day. Look, maybe Im corny with that tear and all but I hope youll find this detective-allegory as charming and intriguing as I do.
Mr. Kaminsky was one of the heroes of literature.
If you could sum up Lieberman's Choice in three words, what would they be?
I keep seeing this silly question. I don't know why.

How can this man write so much, and so well?
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Absolutely. Mr. Kaminsky has drawn fully human characters in his Chicago books, men and women to whom we can easily relate, and about whom we care very quickly. Abe Lieberman and his partner, Bill Hanrahan, are Chicago homicide cops with rich lives at work and at home. We get to know their families, their foibles, their cases, and just a great deal about their lives. These are eminently likable people who have us rooting for them from the beginning of each book. The policework is difficult and emotionally trying, and it takes its toll on both of them over the years. Lieberman and his wife, Bess, are also long-time members of their Jewish congregation, which offers up many mini-stories to entertain us. Mr. Kaminsky's writing style is also very easy to like. He is funny and fluid. He knows the emotional makeups of his characters, and he lets us in on those with grace and ease. He never tries too hard. This series, the series that is set in Moscow and features Porfiry Rostnikov, and the series set in Sarasota, featuring Louis, the sad sack refugee from Chicago: all of these are very enjoyable books. I marvel at Mr. Kaminsky's productivity; how he can keep turning these out without seeming to be straining his imagination or his skills. A gem of an author, who proves time and again that mystery/detective novels are a very broad and satisfying genre in American literature, with some of the best writers in America plowing these fields. How they manage to come up with one diamond after another is one of the great wonders of our times. I am so glad that these authors have chosen this area in which to specialize. Thus I have an almost unlimited selection of great books to read. Thank you, gentlemen and ladies.
Who was your favorite character and why?
I have been interested in this genre for maybe twenty-five years, beginning with Robert Crais and going through Stuart Kaminsky, Tom Perry, Tim Hallinan, Dennis Lehane and many others. My interest in the area could hardly be higher. Perhaps this is to some degree because I am a psychologist who has worked in these areas for four decades, in addition to my work as a psychotherapist, so it's a natural fit for me.
What does Richard Ferrone bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
    Yes.

    Good, but disappointing
When Ed McBain was alive and in his prime I was not a big fan of his 87th Precinct series. Nevertheless, I am very pleased that many of his novels in this series as well as his Matthew Hope series are now available at Audible. Both series use excellent narrators, Dick Hill and Luke Daniels. I do expect to purchase and listen to many of McBain's audiobooks.
Kiss was originally published in 1992 thirteen years before McBain's death. It is a worthwhile police procedural, but in my opinion is far from his best. Dick Hill's narration is stellar, as usual.
Wow -- best McBain thus far!
Would you listen to Kiss again? Why?
I already know the ending so probably not
Who was your favorite character and why?
The hit man - very multi-dimensional character.
    Great
Loved it, the story was amazing. Flow of the book was excellent. Can't wait to read more of Ed McBain!!!!!!!!!!!!!
