The morning after the aged Ute shaman receives a perplexing visit from a silent, disheveled matukach "magician," Daisy's neighbor, Nathan McFain, discovers something astonishing buried in the dirt on his foundering Colorado dude ranch: The bones of gargantuan beast from a prehistoric age. It is a find of enormous scientific importance that attracts the attention of a wide variety of individuals: Noted paleontologist Moses Silver and his archaeologist daughter Delia; pillars of the scientific community Robert Newton and Cordell York; an Arkansas sharpie named Flye, an overly interested local antiques dealer and Charlie Moon of the Southern Ute Police Department. At the McFain spread primarily to keep an eye on the disreputable Flye, Moon is curious about the strange old bones ....and wary as well. For things this ancient and rare have been known to inspire evil deeds in the past, including avarice, mendacity, and murder. And, when one of the prime players in this timeless drama vanishes without a trace, Charlie worries that his greatest fears have been realized. But while Charlie investigates the unexplained disappearance - and a very suspicious death that follows soon after - using rational and accepted police methods, his Aunt Daisy is being drawn by forces preternatural into a grimly related mystery. For craven murder is not the exclusive domain of contemporary Man - and a cry for justice from the past has reached Daisy Perika and tow, extraordinary young girls in her care, ensnaring them all in something old, dark, and dangerous.
    Editorial Reviews:
The Night Visitor is a gripping mystical mystery, narrated in an inviting alto lilt by Romy Nordlinger.
Nathan McFain discovers a cryptic pile of unidentified prehistoric bones buried on the property of his Colorado dude ranch. This discovery causes a tizzy amongst archaeologists, scientists, and even the police. Everyone wants to know where these bones came from and what they mean - including an elderly Ute shaman/sorcerer.
But some things are best left undisturbed. For great consequence could befall those who disturb the mighty spirits within things we do not understand.
    Members Reviews:
    Great book, lousy narrative
Doss is a great storyteller. The reader, however, knows absolutely nothing about the area or culture of the Ute or Navajo. The mispronounced words range from propanel and paleontologist to Goddard Street, Archuleta County, and la Veta Pass. These are not author generated errors but a simple lack of doing one's homework.
Wonderful combination of characters and plot
Would you listen to The Night Visitor again? Why?
    Yes.
What did you like best about this story?
The humor and the treatment of the supernatural.
Which character as performed by Romy Nordlinger was your favorite?
Daisy Perika. Undoubtedly. She's cranky but she contributes so much to the story.
    Any additional comments?
Can we please have more Charlie Moon mysteries? I have the entire series in print and would like to have them in audiobook format.
    Too many unlikeable characters
I really couldn't get into this book. There were several story lines initially and way too few likeable characters in any of them to catch my attention.

    Publisher's Summary:
Intrepid Mountie Jack Taggart is hurled into a world where morality, justice, and the legal system are pitted against one another. Taggart investigates the murder of someone who was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Wiretap information identifies a shadowy gang member known only as Cocktail as being responsible.
Taggart and his partner go undercover to join one of a coalition of gangs who are at war in British Columbia. Their mission is to identify Cocktail and gain evidence to convict him of murder. Taggart soon finds himself knee-deep in drive-by shootings, meth labs, retaliatory murders, and date rapes.
An offer of a truce pact to stop the gang warfare is arranged by Cocktail. Taggart, along with gang bosses, is taken to a remote location to discuss a peace agreement. What they find is that Cocktail has lured them into a trap of torture and murder.
    Editorial Reviews:
A brutal saga of murder, conspiracy, torture, and intrigue, Dead Ends follows Jack Taggart as he investigates a shadowy cabal that goes only by the name of Cocktail. Filled with hair-raising suspense and savage acts of violence, Don Easton's Dead Ends is a pause-resisting thriller. David Drummond's performance only enhances the story's already twisted tone. Drummond perfectly captures Jack Taggart's matter of fact persona and drives home each high-octane moment of danger.

It was also an easy, pleasant read
This book surprised me. In addition to the ending being a surprise, it brought up some very interesting concepts about "real" justice. The content was deeper than just a mere fiction book. Some of it was even a little disturbing, but definitely thought provoking.
It was also an easy, pleasant read; flowing pretty well. It only took me one day to read it.
The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because of the language. I hate cursing. It wasn't outrageous, but a little too much for me.
    Winner
Jack and Laura are a great team. I hope they manage to catch all the bad guys before they are caught.
    Great read
Very exiting and good read. If you haven't read the previous books in the Jack Taggart series, run and buy, you will not regret it.
    An Unconventional Hero
Canada is a world leader in the exportation of drugs, mostly marijuana and methamphetamine. The criminal gangs gross billions of dollars annually. Their leader's live in luxury mansions rivaling Hollywood celebrities. But our courts fail to take a hard stance, and our government continues a losing war.
Don Easton's deep undercover police officer, Jack Taggart, takes most cops cynical view of the war on drugs, to the extreme by employing his own methodology to solve crime and affecting his own version of justice, both of which catch the reader by surprise on numerous occasions.
Dead Ends reveals something else often overlooked. In war it is called collateral damage, the innocent non-combatants maimed, or killed during combat. In the war on drugs collateral damage is a huge reality, but largely unrecognized and unreported.
Dead Ends draws the reader into this dark world, following Taggart as he deals with the often unseen victimization that makes a good cop use extreme and often unorthodox methods in his pursuit of the villains responsible. Taggart's humanism makes him a compelling character the reader can easily identify with. His choices make him an unconventional hero, one whose choices we may applaud, but not admit to.

    Title: Killer Green
    Author: David Niall Wilson

Length: 4 hrs and 12 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-01-13
    Publisher: Crossroad Press
    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Noir
    Publisher's Summary:
    Welcome to Killer Green
Quentin Tarantino meets Smokey & The Bandit in this noir, science-fiction thriller. Sometimes, people just need killing.
When Sam West wanders into the Sunny-Side-Up Diner for the last time, hoping for a last slice of Mort's world-class pie, and one last look at a waitress named Delilah, he has no idea he's about to become the instrument of a great, kharmic cleansing. The only thing crazier than the seemingly inevitable trail of bodies following Sam and Delilah south is the fact that - as State Police and local sheriffs begin to investigate - they find no evidence. Nothing. And the missing bodies are just the start, as an unlikely band of companions are drawn together in a scientific experiment more in line with the TV Series Fringe than anything in reality, with the threat of alien probes, local law enforcement, and rednecks around every corner.
Killer Green began life as a joking conversation on Twitter. It became a phenomenon - was written into a screenpaly - shared on the Internet, optioned by a production company, and continues it's social media-born roll toward the Mexican border.
It's ecologically relevant. It's good for the environment. It's a novel you will not forget, that will leave you laughing and hold your attention to the last word.
    Wouldn't you rather be green?
David Niall Wilson, author of The DeChance Chronicles, Sins of the Flash, This is My Blood, On the Third Day, and more than thirty other books is a former president of the Horror Writer's of America, multiple winner of the Bram Stoker Award, an ordained minister in the Universal Life Church, and nearly as crazy as his characters.
    Members Reviews:
A Real Romp of a story...
"Killer Green" assumes that, indeed, some folks just need killin' and having someone actually do the deed, then grabs the reader by the collar and hauls them on a jolly romp across the highways, back roads and deserts of south Texas while proposing an excellent and useful method of body disposal. Sam West just walks in for a last piece of pie at the Sunny-Side-Up Coffee Shop before heading for the border in his beloved 1966 Ford Thunderbird. He did the aforementioned deed and needs to get out of town. Seems Delilah, SSUCS's delightful to behold waitress feels the same way about her boss. And the game is afoot. Following in the wake of the fleeing couple is a equally interesting group composed of a principled research scientist, his rich and beautiful girlfriend, his research team and their long-suffering truck driver and his wife. Behind *them* are two very tenacious law enforcement types unwilling to lay their careers on the line by calling for backup while following their well-honed instincts to solve a couple of "non-crimes." Oh, and the girlfriend's rich daddy is as tenacious as the cops about keeping his scientific investment and his daughter safe.
Full of witty puns and references to movies, etc.

    Publisher's Summary:
Archer Mayor's New York Times best-selling Joe Gunther series returns with a complex case involving two corpses, one escaped mental patient, and a long-held secret that binds them together.
"Three can keep a secret, if two of them are dead." (Ben Franklin)
Joe Gunther and his team - the Vermont Bureau of Investigation (VBI) - are usually called in on major cases by local Vermont enforcement whenever they need expertise and backup. But after the state is devastated by Hurricane Irene, the police from one end of the state are taxed to their limits, leaving Joe Gunther involved in an odd and seemingly unrelated series of cases. In the wake of the hurricane, a seventeen-year-old gravesite is exposed, revealing a coffin that had been filled with rocks instead of the expected remains.
At the same time, an old retired state politician turns up dead at his high-end nursing home, in circumstances that leave investigators unsure that he wasn't murdered. And, a patient who calls herself the Governor has walked away from a state mental facility during the post-hurricane flood. It turns out she was indeed once "Governor for a Day," over forty years ago, and she might have also been falsely committed and drugged to keep her from revealing something she saw all those years ago. Amid the turmoil and the disaster relief, it's up to Joe Gunther and his team to learn what really happened with the two corpses - one missing - and what secret the Governor might have still locked in her brain that links them all.

Okay (barely) after a really slow start
Archer Mayor has been writing novels, one every year, in the Joe Gunther beginning in 1988. Three Can Keep a Secret is the 2013 edition, number 24. Like the others it is a police procedural set in Vermont. It is a good story, but is nothing special. The three that kept the secret are adult siblings.
The narrator read as if lethargic for the first half of the book but then changed into a good narrator.
I came very close to quitting the book as I neared the mid-point. I still have mixed feelings about whether listening to the novel was worthwhile.

    Members Reviews:
Fast-moving & Fun read. It's Film Noir for the 21st century.
The story is as interesting as its title suggests. How does a Sea of Fire go missing? Easily enough if it's the name of a race horse. Jock Stewart is an old school journalism kind of reporter, cut from the same cloth as Sam Spade and other film noir types. He's got sarcasm oozing from every pore, and as often as not, it gets him into lots of trouble with just about everyone, which makes for lots of plot twists and turns. Plenty of memorable characters reside in Jock's home town, like a perpetually doughnut-eating cop by the name of Kruller. Those kind of little word plays and the intentional use of old clichés will make you laugh out loud. Jock projects himself as a hard core kind of guy, but deep down he's a softie. If you're looking for something different to entertain you, check out Jock Stewart and the Missing Sea of FIre.
Had Me Laughing on First Page
Jock Stewart and the Missing Sea of Fire is the first novel starring the wise-cracking journalist who heretofore has appeared in the Morning Satirical New blog and in the satire news article collection The Worst of Jock Stewart. (Jock Stewart is rumored to be the alter-ego of author Malcolm R. Campbell.) Jock Stewart is an old school journalist who started his career by handsetting metal type and doesn't appreciate the nuances of the upcoming digital news age as much as his editor wishes he would. As the Star-Gazer newspaper transitions toward a paperless future where Jock will no longer "report" the news, but merely "facilitate" discussion between (unpaid) bloggers and Internet users, Jock struggles to complete his one last, real news assignment. Unfortunately, the missing race horse Sea of Fire just refuses to turn up; his owners can't even commit to admitting he's been stolen, and the #1 suspect is Jock's on-again-off-again girlfriend, last seen leaving Jock's house without her little black dress. Then, there's the murder ...
First of all, I have to say that you shouldn't read this book for the mystery. I couldn't summon much concern for a race horse that may or may not have been stolen, and I never had any doubt about the mastermind behind the murder. The pleasure in reading this book is in the humor - rather in the vein of Joan Hess's Maggody series.

    Loved it
I'm normally a horror/ghost story fan and haven't tried this sort of book before. All I can say is, what a breath of fresh air.
The characters are well developed and entertaining, there is a nice balance of storyline, action and humour. An altogether entertaining experience.
Reading has become more of a challenge for me due to failing eyesight, so I went for the audio book version. It was perfectly read/acted and added to the story.
As you may have guessed, I loved it.
Looking forward to the next one.

Can I send it back to you??? never used if you read above
Enjoy Rostnikov stories, not so much this topic.
I'm really enjoying the Inspector Rostnikov series about the Russian detective, but I had a hard time reading parts of this one since one of the main topics was catching a dog fighting ring and it had some dog fight scenes. I would have liked a different topic.
I think that dog fighting is horrific and would not have read this book if it had not been a Rostnikov story.

    As always Kaminsky delivers
This is a convoluted story about a plot to murder Russian leaders. Rostnikov, as always is able to unravel the knot, For those us who have grown fond of the protagonist, it is a very good listen. I would advise the reader to enjoy earlier books in the series, before listening to this one.
