Title: Thug's Brew

Format: Unabridged

Length: 21 mins

Language: English

Release date: 06-17-14

Publisher: Ram Press

Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Noir

Publisher's Summary:

The weight of the world on my shoulders, I lit a Newport with my trusty Zippo Anarchy lighter and reflected on this career I've been pursuing for most of my adult life, dealing with life-and-death situations on a daily basis and coping with the consequences of things I've done in the line of duty. The choices you make can cost you. In police work, as in life, even when you do the right thing sometimes things turn out horribly wrong.

Great Book!

Q, I enjoyed reading Thugs Brew. It was a good read. I wish there were more stories though. I think an officers life is so intriguing, as such that the average citizen can not even begin to imagine all of what you guys go through or have to deal with and still be the POLICE!

Title: All Day and a Night

Subtitle: Ellie Hatcher, Book 5

Author: Alafair Burke

Narrator: Andi Arndt

Format: Unabridged

Length: 10 hrs and 31 mins

Language: English

Release date: 06-10-14

Publisher: HarperAudio

Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 84 votes

Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Police Procedurals

Publisher's Summary:

A new murder case with ties to a convicted serial killer leads Detective Ellie Hatcher into a twisting investigation with explosive and deadly results in this superb mystery from the "terrific web spinner" (Entertainment Weekly) Alafair Burke.

When psychotherapist Helen Brunswick is murdered in her Park Slope office, the entire city suspects her estranged husband - until the District Attorney's office receives an anonymous letter. The letter's author knows a chilling detail that police have kept secret: The victim's bones were broken after she was killed. Her injuries were eerily similar to the signature used 20 years earlier by Anthony Amaro, a serial killer serving a life sentence for his crimes. Now, Amaro is asking to be released from prison, arguing that he was wrongly convicted, and that the true killer is still on the loose.

NYPD Detectives Ellie Hatcher and J. J. Rogan are tapped as the "fresh look" team to reassess the original investigation that led to Amaro's conviction. The case pits them against both their fellow officers and a hard-charging celebrity defense lawyer with a young associate named Carrie Blank, whose older sister was one of Amaro's victims. As both the NYPD and Amaro's legal team search for certainty in years of conflicting evidence, their investigations take them back to Carrie's hometown and secrets left behind there. And when Carrie falls victim to a brutal attack, Hatcher knows that the young attorney got too close to the truth.

Races to a satisfying and surprising conclusion

I listened on the strength of some book blurbs and now know I have discovered a new author whose works I need to read.

While it is a police procedural on one level, what makes this a strong story is that it is a crafty interweaving of many stories told in different voices. The author leaves the reader saying of course when all the threads are worked out.

In my experience it is unique in having so many strong female characters in a police thriller.

The plot is based on the problem of whether a serial killer was wrongfully convicted. Interestingly the serial killer himself plays only a minor role in the story.

Great book

Wonderful book, keeping you guessing until the very end. Once again, Alafair Burke has written an exceptional mystery. Can't wait for her next book.

terrible narrator

What disappointed you about All Day and a Night?

so far, there's only been a couple of books, I've been unable to finish, and this is one of them. Not because the book was badly written, in fact is was probably quite good, but because the narration - I call it that over performance - was so bad. Her voice grated on me; her emphasis was all in the wrong places and she sounded like a 15 year old that was attempting to read a book to her young siblings. What a pity, Alafair! I have enjoyed all of your books to date and previous performers have all been fine.

Excellent Detective Story

Thoroughly enjoyed this detective story. Performance was spot on, and the story was engrossing.

Audible 20 Review Sweepstakes.

Talk about fast read - real action adventure!

Would you listen to Gray Ghost again? Why?

Yes - I will definitely listen to Gray Ghost again - there's a lot of action and it all happens fast.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Gray Ghost?

When they made the connection with who they thought was the kingpin

Have you listened to any of Patrick Conns other performances before? How does this one compare?

No - but I will watch for his audios ... perfect voice for this book and these characters.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

yes

Any additional comments?

I won this audio book in a contest, but I had previously purchased and read the ebook version. Here's that review: Well written action adventure that you won't want to miss. Two Miami-Dade police detectives head to the Bahamas for a much-deserved vacation of fishing when they inadvertently become involved with an international drug smuggling ring.

The characters are colorful and easily come to life. The story has just enough twists and turns to keep the reader turning pages in anticipation of the next action.

My hat is off to Chris Swinney for this masterpiece ... I look forward to reading many more.
