Beautiful and Touching

This story was beautifully written, with a cast of wonderful characters. (Right at the moment I think Pip is my favorite.) It's told through the eyes of several different characters and each one felt unique, with their own voice their own personality. Definitely an interesting, and unique tale. (It also made me want to reread Bouwman's first book, The Remarkable and Very True Story of Lucy and Snowcap, who I believe made a brief appearance at the end.)

Skillful Mix of Themes Easily Accessible to All âÂFun Story!

The author lays a mosaic-like tale from three sibling pairs in this instant classic. Pip is definitely my favorite character! Through her skillful narrative touching on both magical and "real" worlds, H.M. Bouwman manages to converge on every theme including: the magic available to us in the power of the story, family, ethics, as well as the inevitable cycle of life, death, and rebirth through love. I highly recommend this book to young readers as well as old as a playful tale that sticks with you.

Crack It Open and You'll Be Hooked

This isn't a book I would have picked for myself, but it was part of the Penguin Young Readers Author Program and so I gave it a try. As usual, the folks who choose the books for the program were right. Bouwman has created a fantasy world that intersects with ours in remarkable ways. The second world (as it is called), is a cast watery place with a few islands, a large floating nation known as the Raftworld, and even Krakens. People from our world cross over through portals that appear during storms or in whirlpools out at sea. Some of the people who figure prominently in the story are from our world.

A fanciful, fun book full of ups and downs

A charming book. A girl who has been in a car accident finds herself as a dog in her next life. She knows she's been a girl. Being a dog, she can't tell anyone else.

In this story, she finds her way from an inconsiderate owner to a boy, Pip, who has run away from foster care. They go in search of the father he never knew. All's well in the end. An easy, enjoyable read!

Amazing book! A true adventure

Love this book. Was worried it would be sad but it's a great story . Would recommend this for young adult or adult. Sweet yet relatable story

It was a gift.

Great for dog lovers!

It has been almost forever since I picked up a book written for middle grade children. I decided to grab this one largely because of the awesome cover and the fact that I am a complete nut when it comes to dogs didn't hurt. This ended up being a nice quick read that I think a lot of readers will really enjoy.

I was a little worried that this was going to be a sad book since the dog in the book was a little girl until she died but it really wasn't at all. We don't get to know Daisy until she dies in the accident and the afterworld was honestly a bit odd. The way that her transformation from little girl to dog was handled wasn't emotional. If anything, I felt Daisy's confusion about what was happening.

I did feel poorly for the dog in her first home where she isn't really treated as a member of the family. She is kept outside tied to a doghouse and really doesn't get a lot of quality time. She remembers her life as Daisy and wants to see her parents. She dreams of finding them. The only person that really treats her well is the homeless man at the park, Jack, who talks to her and pets her when he can.

When she finally gets the opportunity to escape, she does and finds her place with Pip, a homeless boy. Pip names her Ray and the story really takes off. These two have an incredible bond and it was nice to see how much they truly cared for each other. Pip and Ray embark on a journey to find Pip's father and hopefully a home.

This book had a lot of great moments. I liked the fact that it was told from the perspective of the dog, Ray.

The continuing story of Gwendoline and Thor as they try and save not only their family and friends but the remaining folk of The Ring. A new evil woman enters this book. She is very blood thirsty with not an ounce of love in her.Thors time in the cave of the dead is brilliantly written. With hope and tears.Really a great book making it impossible not to read the next in the series

I could write more but don't wish to spoil the plot and I just need to get on to the next book lol.

Dark and sinister

This is a very dark and sinister take on the story of Hansel and Gretel. Though it is loosely based on that tale, it is very different from anything you would know. There are some quite gruesome scenes, definitely not for the faint-hearted. I liked Gretel as the main character and was engaged through the story, wanting to know what would happen to her. The old woman's point of view actually made me slightly sympathetic to her at some parts. It finished quite abruptly and I feel like something was missing as it jumped suddenly to the end without explanation. I guess the next book will explain more.

The reading was ok, but the narrator seemed to struggle on some of the words and the volume changes throughout the book. Sometimes it goes so quiet that the volume has to be turned right up.

Almost adult-YA read

I actually really liked this book, I saw a few reviews that peop had said negative things, but I think this book is like a mix between ya & adult fiction, and has a few instances that you wouldn't normally see in a YA. But it was narrated great, plenty of action & twists& turns to keep my attention. I was surprised by the end! But I like that! Mystery/thrillers are my fav to read. So I'd def recommend this book to my friends.

Lousy ending!

I enjoyed the book, for the most part. It's fairly predictable--typical beach read. Unfortunately, the ending extremely disappointed me. It's not that it wasn't the ending that I was hoping for, or that it too neat and tidy for a thriller-type novel. No, my issue was that the ending was non-existant. It wasn't a cliff hanger, but it leaves questions unanswered and even creates NEW questions before abruptly stopping.

The story is well crafted, plus the vision of the original characters is both pleasantly familiar and refreshing.

The nod to American McGee's Alice made me giddy, though.

The performance and story was astonishing and creative, keeping me thoroughly trapped in the world.

Best take on "Alice in Wonderland"

"Alice in Wonderland" is one of my favorite classic stories and this was one of the best books that I have read as far as a prequel/ different take on the story!

Dinah is the Princess of Hearts and the story takes place the year before she is to be crowned the queen. Her younger brother, Charles, is mad...in fact he is a mad hatter and will never be able to have his chance to rule beside his sister as king. Months before she is to be crowned, she will learn there is more to Wonderland and her father than she ever thought possible. She will be surprised to find out a long kept secret by her father, go on an adventure with Wardley, her best friend and heart card, in the black towers, and learn the true definition of courage the day before she is to be crowned.

Really good

I love this book!

I just cannot get over my disappointment that there isn't a third book yet! I am so invested in this series now. I was a little wary at first because when it started off, I wasn't interested in the story. But then I kept going (this seems to happen to me a lot!) and now I'm hooked. I may not even wait for the audio version. I need to read the next book yesterday! I cannot BELIEVE the author would put out a book and then not have the entire rest of the series available immediately, ha! Anyway, I can't wait. I feel like this book was better than the first, so I can only imagine how great the next one will be.
