Ralph Hammond Innes was born in Horsham, Sussex, on 15 July 1913 and educated at Cranbrook School, Kent. He left school aged 18, and worked successively in publishing, teaching, and journalism. In 1936, in need of money in order to marry, he wrote a supernatural thriller, The Doppleganger, which was published in 1937 as part of a two-year, four book deal. In 1939 Innes moved to a different publisher, and began to write compulsively, continuing to publish throughout his service in the Royal Artillery during the Second World War.

Innes travelled widely to research his novels and always wrote from personal experience - his 1940s novels The Blue Ice and The White South were informed by time spent working on a whaling ship in the Antarctic, while The Lonely Skier came out of a post-war skiing course in the Dolomites. He was a keen and accomplished sailor, which passion inspired his 1956 best seller The Wreck of the Mary Deare.

The equally successful 1959 film adaptation of this novel enabled Innes to buy a large yacht, the Mary Deare, in which he sailed around the world for the next 15 years, accompanied by his wife and fellow author Dorothy Lang. Innes wrote over 30 novels, as well as several works of non-fiction and travel journalism. His thrilling stories of spies, counterfeiters, black markets, and shipwreck earned him both literary acclaim and an international following, and in 1978 he was awarded a CBE. Hammond Innes died at his home in Suffolk on 10th June 1998.

A wonderful performance by the narrator combined with a captivating wartime thriller to produce an enjoyable reading experience! Definitely recommended.

Atmospheric Cornwall at its best

Very impressed with this audible version . The story is evocative of locations little changed since the period in which the novel is based. A great adventure yarn, with superb characterisations by the narrator.

Well done audible for resurrection of some of these treasures of literature .

A Mixed Bag

I gave this book 3 stars because I agree with previous reviewers that the quality of the stories is uneven. Some I'd definitely have given 4 stars and some only 2. Perhaps we are not correctly identifying the issue here, however. Perhaps it is just that readers obviously have different tastes and respond best to stories that reflect their preferences.

So, without intending to denigrate the work of any of the writers included in the collection, I'm going to be very specific about some of my likes and my dislikes.

Among those I enjoyed:

"The Judgement" by Anne Perry--This one or Rusch's work was definitely my favorite in the book.

"Corpse Vision" by Kristine Kathryn Rusch

"The Unicorn Hunt" by Michelle West

"Star of David" by Patricia Briggs--Although the ending was sentimental, still I found the story satisfying

And a couple that disappointed or actually annoyed me:

"The Night of Their Lives" by Max Allans Collins--It seemed to me that the whole point of the story was merely to arrive at the final sentence, and that just wasn't enough for me.

"Ninja Rats on Harleys" by Elizabeth A Vaughan--This story annoyed me more than any other in the book. Why? Because there was so much to like about it. I loved the writing, the cast of characters, and the premise. Having established this much, however, the author just stopped. There was no real story here (no there...there). It read like the first chapter of a novel--a novel I might well have enjoyed quite a bit. As is, however, the story more than disappointed.

A great collection

This anthology contains quite a few really good stories. Some are more fanciful than others. Some focus on a crime or crimes, while in others the crime itself is tangential. All of them contain elements of the paranormal to a greater or lesser degree.

First Pournelle, a spy novel

I've enjoyed Pournelle's science fiction and was happy to find this, Âhis first published novel - as he explains in the afterward, the first he finished.Â

Pournelle's books usually deal as much with the psychology and thoughts of the characters as with technology and action. This book is no different, Âand is full of interesting and irritating anachronisms appropriate to the Â1969 time frame and mindset. ÂThe "girls" Âare expected Â- and expect - to cook, for instance. On the other hand, Âthere's no double standard expressed about sex.

Great non-science-fiction story from the prolific and great science-fiction author--his first fiction published!

Pournelle's first novel is a great cold war thriller

Red Heroin is Jerry Pournelle's first novel, originally published under the pen name Wade Curtis. It is a tightly crafted cold war thriller written in the style of Donald Hamilton. The Kindle edition includes an afterward by the author which is almost worth the price of admission by itself.

Great cold-war spy thriller

Written back in the cold war, this spy thriller is a great look back into the issues and atmosphere of the time. The story is gripping and while the hero may at times be too perfect, the details especially in the sailing scenes really flesh out the background and enhance the overall storytelling. A very fun read.

slow and awful sex scenes

This is not a recommended listen. It's slow, boring, and the sex scenes are unnecessary! I thought this was a crime thriller not a mills and boon! I'm not averse to some romance/sex in a thriller but only if its well written and a small part of the plot. I rarely skip parts of books but I skipped lots of this book and didn't miss anything important.

One of my least favourite listens. I am 13 hours in and have really struggled both with the narrator and the story. I am finding it overly complicated with far to much repeated detail. I am not sure I will be able to listen until the end.

20 hr book. The usual Karen rose fare so easy listening. However, listened less than an hour and had to give up. The terrible narrator swings from whining to shouting with aggression. The difference a good narrator makes is so important, you don't realise how talented they are until you hear a bad performance.

Gripping thriller

A real plot twister of a book. Part of a series but the books do work as standalones. Starts right in with a kidnapping and moves fast although very long. Lots of threads to keep hold of, but the narrator was excellent.

Interesting premise.......

yes, an interesting premise and frightening because it becomes more believable everyday with medical technological advancements. The story, however, was one dimensional and simplistic, not enthralling or particularly suspenseful and it lost me, finally, with it's turning to back God who will fix everything..........Although the premise is interesting, I can't recommend as a great read and it only gets 3 stars because of the premise....the narrator, too, was also a bit lackluster, but I guess, on reflection, she matched the tone of the book.

Interesting premise... not fully realized

I have enjoyed this author for several years now, but this is not her best work. The concept is interesting - what power do medical advances have, and how could they be used for good or evil? This is not fully realized, and too many coincidences abound for the writing to be credible. How likely is it that a brain chip recipient to just be able to go home after 48 hours?

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

I would have fleshed out the premise a bit more... maybe made the recipients have to stay in the hospital more... have control groups? I am not sure what I would have done, but included more well-rounded characters and less melodrama. Also, the writing is very clunky in spots, and an editor could have cleared this up.

What about Rebecca Gallaghers performance did you like?

Her performance was very good in this book... I think Over the Edge was better... as another reviewer stated, it is flat and emotionless in places. Not sure if this was meant to reflect the character herself.. in the beginning this works, but not continuously.

Really interesting suspense. Lots of twists and turns. Nice subplot, enjoyed the science in it and the mother-daughter relationship aspect. But mostly loved how it kept me curious till the end.

2nd book in Very Good Series!

So this is the second book in what looks like it will be a series by Adrian Magson, about Inspector Lucas Rocco. Rocco is former military, and most recently has been working for the police in Paris, until an "initiative" sent more experienced people into less populated areas. This is how he got to be located in the tiny village of Poissons-Les-Marais in Picardie north of Paris. In the first book, he is struggling to get to know people, figure out whom he can trust, etc--even as he is immediately put to work on a challenging case.

In this book, he is a bit more settled, though still has an uneasy relationship with his superior officer, Massin. He is now presented with a case that is both dangerous and culturally sensitive, because it partially involves the human trafficking that is done between Northern Africa and France, and also mafia-like people. Both books are very good, though I liked the first one a *slight* bit better (felt this one had a little more violence than my comfort level would prefer). Both are action-packed, smoothly written, characters more developed.

The only difference that is truly noticeable is between narrators. Gordon Griffin read the first book--and I think his voice got imprinted on my mind in a way that hearing the difference with Roger May's narration was kind of startling. May is also an excellent narrator, and the only reason I gave him 4 stars is that his very British accent seems odd for a book that takes place in France. (That is possibly where Griffin did a better job). It looks like May will be the narrator going forward--and that's fine. He does a good job with various voices and inflection and timing--everything one hopes for in a good narrator. I just wish he could make the book sound more French and less British. Highly Recommend! Very good series.

A change in narration, but not in writing

The first few hours with this book took some getting used to. I had become so accustomed to Gordon Griffin's impeccable narration in the first book that the change to Roger May was startling. His narration is very good, but not exceptional. It took me a while to get the hang of it and to appreciate his contribution to the story.

Another brilliant book from Mr Zandri and RC Bray

I generally only listen to RC Bray books as I think he's the next narrator on Audible, hence I read this and the other moonlight book he read.

I like the sarcastic persona of moonlight and his side kick in this story. The story has twists and the dialogue helps form a direction that anyone who likes thrillers will like. I also like the dialogue between the "dumb" Russian gangsters. Brilliant. Mr Zandri user RC Bray for the next books in the series.

A gripping suspense story with memorable characters that will keep your attention

I downloaded this book to my Kindle to take with me on our Thanksgiving trip and have found my attention gripped and held for hours on the train. In my opinion, Ridley Pearson's novels are uneven, some really keep my attention and others don't. The crimes or criminals he chooses to write about can be off-putting and disgusting in some of his books, not as human and multi-faceted as in his best stories. This is one of his novels that I will remember with vivid characters, a suspenseful plot and excellent writing.

I tried, but couldn't get out of the blocks. Not terrible, just not engaging. Turned it off out of boredom.

So bored by minute 20 I turned it off. Bummer I spent my monthly audible token on this one. I love aviation and thrillers, but this was a snoozer.

Great read - very engaging from the start and held my interest throughout! I'm really enjoying Ridley's writing, and this was no exception.

Absolutely riveting. .

Tempted to read in just one sitting. Well paced with enigmatic characters and sense of intrigue. Villain was strong and unpredictable to the end.

Ridley Pearson is hard to beat

One of my favorite authors and he didn't disappoint. Hard Fall is a well written book. There is enough twists & turns to keep a reader interested right until the end. Bringing back Lou Boldt was a plus!
