    Format: Unabridged
Length: 11 hrs and 26 mins

    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Psychological
    Publisher's Summary:
In a dilapidated farmhouse out in the vast waterlogged plains of the English Fenlands, Fran awakes groggily to her baby's cries one February night and finds the bed empty beside her. Her husband, Nathan, is gone.
Moving uneasily through the drafty rooms, searching for her husband, Fran soon makes a devastating discovery that upends her marriage and any semblance of safety. As she tries desperately to make sense of what happened to Nathan, Fran is forced to delve dangerously into the undercurrents of his claustrophobic hometown and question how well she knew him in the first place. Fran, increasingly isolated, grows paranoid - but Nathan isn't the only one hiding something. Though she can't tell a soul, Fran is shielding a damning secret of her own: a hazy, dreamlike memory from the night of Nathan's disappearance that might be the key to it all.
From the best-selling author of The Crooked House comes an utterly gripping psychological thriller spanning the traditions of Daphne du Maurier and S. J. Watson. Christobel Kent's The Loving Husband is spooky and skillfully written, dragging listeners deep into the unsettling world of the fens and into a marriage of half truths and past lives, where no one can be trusted - especially not your spouse.

    Fascinating Complexity
If you like your mysteries simple and straightforward, this is not the book for you. But if you like subtlety and nuance in your whodunit, you will love "The Loving (??) Husband." Also great use of the atmosphere of the Fens landscape in England.

Reading this book as we speak. It's compelling and exciting. I'd recommend it to those who love suspenseful books with a unique flavor.
    Five Stars
Interesting twists in this spellbinding tale.
Who really knows the person you marry?
Enticing tale with tension building from the beginning. I could not put it down. A 24 hour read!
If you like your mysteries served up with a main course of unreliability and a side of deception, you will love this story.
Thriller novels told from an unreliable point of view have been all the rage of late, but they would have to go to some lengths to top THE LOVING HUSBAND, which takes the plot device to new heights. One needs to take a step or two back to see what author Christobel Kent has created so well here, which is a tale full of folks who lie their posteriors off and, just for grins and giggles, engage in some self-deception as well. The result is a mystery that almost canât be sorted out, but for a confession that may not be forthcoming.
THE LOVING HUSBAND centers on Fran Hall, wife of Nathan and mother of four-year-old Emme and three-month-old Ben. Fran is a hot mess. We meet her as she is awakened in the wee hours of a Sunday morning by a half-awake, somewhat fleeting (to say the least) encounter with her husband in the bedroom. In just a couple of hours, her life is turned upside down and blown up when she discovers Nathan lying dead and gutted by the edge of their farm property in rural England. She calls the police immediately, and the officers assigned to the case suspect her of the deed, and not totally without reason.

Title: The Zero and the One
    Subtitle: A Novel
    Author: Ryan Ruby
    Narrator: Bobby Long
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 10 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-07-17
    Publisher: Hachette Audio
Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 1 votes
    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Psychological
    Publisher's Summary:
A Gothic twist on the classic tale of innocents abroad, The Zero and the One is a meditation on the seductions of friendship and the power of dangerous ideas that registers the dark, psychological suspense of Patricia Highsmith's The Talented Mr. Ripley and the intellectual and philosophical intrigue of John Banville's The Book of Evidence.
A shy, bookish scholarship student from a working-class family, Owen Whiting has high hopes of what awaits him at Oxford, only to find himself adrift and out of place among the university's dim aristocrats and posh radicals. But his life takes a dramatic turn when he is assigned to the same philosophy tutorial as Zachary Foedern, a visiting student from New York City. Rich, brilliant, and charismatic, Zach takes Owen under his wing, introducing him to a world of experiences Owen has only ever read about. From the quadrangles of Oxford to the seedy underbelly of Berlin, they practice what Zach preaches, daring each other to transgress the boundaries of convention and morality, until Zach proposes the greatest transgression of all: a suicide pact. But when Zach's plans go horribly awry, Owen is left to pick up the pieces in the sleek lofts and dingy dives of lower Manhattan. Now he must navigate the treacherous boundary between illusion and reality if he wants to understand his friend and preserve a hold on his once bright future.
    Critic Reviews:
"The Zero and the One is a fast-paced, philosophical meditation on what qualifies as the worst crime one can commit." (Booklist)
"Skillfully plotted and...intriguing. An undeniably propulsive read." (Publishers Weekly)

Promising start betrayed by sad depravity
The meaning of life, a question examined in many philosophical novels, has rarely been examined in such a dark and disturbing one as this, which I give four stars predominantly due to the writing that, in places, is among the best I've seen in some time.
Having said that, I found the plot and the characters deeply disturbing and somewhat sophomoric.
Although I felt compelled to continue to turn the pages, it was clear from early on that the story would not end happily, and so it does not. After all, the two main characters, the wealthy New Yorker Zachary Foedern, a visiting student at Oxford, and Owen Whiting, a brilliant but shy young man and the first in his working class family to attend university, make a suicide pact. It comes out fairly early on that Zach has died and Owen mourns his friend's loss.
Zach found himself totally bewitched by the thinking of fictional philosopher Hans Abendroth, of whose rare book Zero and the One he found only one copy in English, in the possession of a cult philosophical figure, despised (as we later learn) by Abendroth's publisher.

Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Supernatural & Paranormal
    Publisher's Summary:
For fans of legendary pulp author H. P. Lovecraft, there is nothing bigger than the annual Providence-based convention called the Summer Tentacular. Horror writer Colleen Danzig doesn't know what to expect when she arrives, but is unsettled to find that among the hob-knobbing between scholars and literary critics are a group of real freaks: book collectors looking for volumes bound in human skin, and true believers claiming the power to summon the Elder God Cthulhu, one of their idol's most horrific fictional creations, before the weekend is out. Colleen's trip spirals into a nightmare when her roommate for the weekend, an obnoxious novelist known as Panossian, turns up dead, his face neatly removed. What's more unsettling is that, in the aftermath of the murder, there is little concern among the convention goers. The Summer Tentacular continues uninterrupted, except by a few bumbling police. Everyone at the convention is a possible suspect, but only Colleen seems to show any interest in solving the murder. So she delves deep into the darkness, where occult truths have been lurking since the beginning of time. A darkness where Panossian is waiting, spending a lot of time thinking about Colleen, narrating a new Lovecraftian tale that could very well spell her doom.

    Great murder-mystery with unique storytelling
What a fun read/listen! An interesting murder-mystery that uses some very interesting storytelling techniques. The backdrop (a Lovecraft convention) is quite fun and provides a lot of opportunity for a cool story. Lots of solid knowledge into Lovecraft, the writer and his stories. While not necessarily Lovecraftian itself, this novel is a great homage to his fiction (and him) and an entertaining read overall. Audiobook has two (one actor for each narrator) very good performances as well.
Only diehard Lovecraft fans need apply
    Any additional comments?
A maddening mixture of, on the one hand, witty satire and sharp observations and, on the other hand, convoluted mystery and flat characters. I think I enjoyed the book, the alternation of live narrator (and Lovecraftian newbie author) and murder victim (established Lovecraftian regular) was a neat conceit, especially the chapters from the newly dead point of view. Having briefly frequented a few anime conventions, the portrait of the Lovecraft convention circuit was believable and sometimes painfully funny (and desperate). The author hits the right notes in making the cast of characters ring true and the petty infighting, awkward social interactions, and sometimes myopic fawning of the community can be cutting. But the driver behind the novel, the murder mystery, sputters and lurches and is just largely unsatisfying. The conclusion felt thrown together and the purposely vague ending was forced. Not entirely wasted time, but not a book I'd easily recommend.
    Just neckbeard things
The problem with this book is that none of the characters are remotely likable or even interesting.
Basically the story (no spoilers) is this. A nosey vegan writer gets really involved in a murder at a neckbeard convention.

However he's also a member of a very old and secret organization that protects the world from devils and demons summoned here to do evil. A foot soldier on the front lines of the eternal war between Heaven and Hell, things had been favoring the side of Heaven for some time now. Until today that is, when someone discovered how to summon a devil that no one had seen since WWII.

Upset with being taken off the case, Mark does discover one thing rather quickly: whoever is behind this is now after him, and if he's not careful he'll be joining his partner sooner, rather than later.

    New series great story!
A great new series with a modern twist to hunt demons. Mark Hammer is one of the Vatican's top Devil dispatchers. On what he thinks is a regular demon exorcism, he loses his partner and uncovers a plot with links to Hitler.
Our hero is set against receiving a new partner which makes a conflict between them. Mark does not want to put a newbie in a dangerous situation but he is determine to find out what happen to his first partner.
Much of the story is about believing in the power of faith. The more devoted you are and of course a fighting skill you increase your chances of surviving an encounter with a demon.
It has all the ingredients for an exciting story action, smart protagonist, and a fresh take on an urban fantasy. There is action and a great back story for an exciting start to a new series.
    Garbage story
big religion coverup and blame game the devil made them do it, that is how they coveredup for their priests that like play with boys.

    Good Read!
What a good book! I really enjoyed reading it, it was just the right brand of humorous that I love and the sort of creepy-death feel that I also love.
I really like the take on death itself and how it manifests, especially depending upon the person who is dying.
    Delightful!
There is something incredibly addictive and charming about the atmosphere of Grim Death. It is a seamless mix of suspense, horror and vintage detective noir. It commands a new genre of its own but doesn't take itself too seriously so as to be contrived. I'm waiting eagerly for a sequel...

Would you consider the audio edition of Imposter to be better than the print version?
I haven't read the print version.
What other book might you compare Imposter to and why?
I don't know of another book I'd compare Imposter to.
    Which scene was your favorite?
Cora finding Sophie in the alley.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes however life got in the way.
    Any additional comments?
The narrator did a decent job of changing her voice for every character and spoke clearly. The story is a tragic one involving a missing child and ends in an unexpected way. I went into this book blind. I didn't even read the blurb. I'm glad I went in blind because I feel the blurb gives too much away. The story is a bit predictable however is engaging, keeps you thinking and leaves you with an unexpected twist. Great book. I'd recommend this audio edition.
    Imposter was gripping
This was my first book by K. Larsen and if they're all as good as this one, I can hardly wait to read/listen to more. It was a great story, with a captivating plot. So glad I got a chance to listen to it this weekend.
    Poor narration
Story was ok would not recommend. The narration was very poor quality, and did not sound professional, only finished it because I had not downloaded another book. Note to self- listen to the sample first!

Head and shoulders above the rest, best thriller for a long time!
I really enjoyed this audiobook which also featured one of the best narrators I have heard for a long time who gave a wonderful performance. I love a good thriller but find so many these days are sketchy affairs which seems to have been dashed off without much thought. However Her Perfect Life had real meat on its bones to get stuck into with well developed charaters, great plots and sub plots and really intelligently and thoroughly thought out. In fact so many interwoven plots I am really hoping that there will be a sequel as certainly I would love to see where the main character goes from here and find out the remaining mystery. Excellent all round and I am hoping perhaps this sort of standard of writing and narration will be sought after by publishers in future now the bar has been raised.

    Good read
This was a bit of a slow burner, but does quickly pick up the pace. This is the second book with DC Maggie Neville, and the characters certainly develop and evolve. The story itself was good, and I didn't guess the ending. Buy this one if you like seeing books from a police perspective and if you like seeing a story from different points of view. Overall very enjoyable and was sorry it finished.
    Great story
I enjoyed the story, but felt the narrators voice was a little monotone, which irritated a bit. Won't stop me listening to others though.
    Cracking storyline
Another excellent storyline with lots of twists and turns. Never boring and well read. Can't wait for her next book.
    Great story, beautifully read
I really enjoyed this book and found myself rewinding quite a lot so as not to miss any detail.
I am usually wary of thrillers as I can't cope with anything too grisly, but although this did contain some gruesome elements, the story was so intriguing that it kept me listening. The characters are very well drawn and believable, and the narrator brings them out beautifully, using accents and individual voices without ever overdoing them.
I can't wait to listen to the author's first book, and I really hope she brings us more of DC Maggie Neville soon.
I wanted this to be better.
The ending was so disappointing and not worth the listen. I thought there'd be a bigger twist. Also, it was hard to keep up with or even care about the story since we spent way too much time with Maggie. Though likeable, I really wasn't expecting to delve so deeply into Maggie's issues when there were several other mysterious unfolding. Maybe fewer storylines next time so you don't have to wrap everything up so quickly at the end.

    Not for audio
Sadly some books just don't translate into audio very well ... pity because the story was good
    tedious, dreary
What disappointed you about Heartbreak Hotel?
The whole story just plodded along.
What was most disappointing about Jonathan Kellermans story?
The characters left me completely cold, as they trudged through a trail of boring crime.
What didnt you like about John Rubinsteins performance?
And then there's the narrator. How laboured do you want to be? If there was any excitement in the plot or the characters, he sucked it all out.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
I'm disappointed with myself that I persevered with it. Really, really poor. Won't be bothering with Jonathan Kellerman or - more particularly - anything narrated by John Rubinstein.
