    Interesting
Encouraging to read the work of a young and working writer. Good ear, good story telling and for an early publication by the author I commend.

    Publisher's Summary:
What goes on inside our own minds will often be our undoing....
He had not always been such a lost cause. Not long before life was consumed by the poisonous chemicals that pumped through an addict's body, he was an active participant in what was considered society; with a beautiful wife, a home, a decent career. To an outside observer, life seemed perfect. But this story isn't a happily-ever-after fairy tale. It's the darkest parts of life, an internal battle of demons and, maybe, redemption.

    Addiction is Terrifying
    Any additional comments?
This book won't be for everyone - it isn't a simple listen. It requires that the listener really, well, listen throughout the book. I can see ways where Hoyt could have made the book simpler and easier to follow and I know exactly why he didn't do that. Listening to the book (or reading it) was supposed to make the reader feel as confused, lost and alone as the protagonist. This book follows an addict in his downward spiral towards violence and death; it doesn't always go in chronological order.
I think this book was well crafted and it left me feeling the way the author intended - flustered and anxious. A lot of reviews said this story was told badly but I think that the readers were just experiencing exactly what the author intended and didn't like it. If you're going to listen to this book, be prepared to enter the mind of an addict, and to live uncomfortably there throughout the duration of the book. The concept is cool and the execution works! I would recommend this book to readers who like something unique, outside of the box.
I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher.
I Watched from the Other Side of the Street
This first-person account of unglamorous addiction had great potential. With a title like Walking on Quicksand, you expect darkness or bleakness, and Hoyt delivered. You get the definite almost un-washable feel of his plight, defiance, and self-loathing.
It a good story, poorly told and so there inlays the loss potential. The method of delivery left me watching everything unfold from the other side of the street. Throughout the entire tale, I remained an outsider looking in, which I suppose is indeed the experience of a drug addict but it took away from the reading/listening experience.
The first person perspective is told with third person style where the protagonist is aware of what others are thinking, often with the surety of a mind reader or some all-knowing god-like entity. Rather than the protagonist blasting his audience with his unilateral take on things and expecting unquestionable acceptance, more time could have been invested in dialogue (versus extended stretches of monolog). The protagonist could have drawn us closer to his experience, and consequently, made it easier to not only relate to him but to better empathize with and actually LIKE him.
The introduction of the female love interest was done with a bit of mystery: This sparked my interest. I found myself perking up and listening more attentively to better understand her role. In quick disappointment, her part fell flat under the weight of the narrative style. The narrative moves forward and her immeasurable potential to give the tale texture remains sadly unrealized.

    Original and compelling!
I wasn't at all sure about this book in the early chapters, but once the characters were fleshed out, it got going and how! The two main protagonists, both women, are very well drawn. One is particularly complex, one has hidden depths. The story is original, keeping the listener/reader on their toes. There are several unexpected events and the ending is satisfying. A warning though, there is some pretty gruesome animal abuse here. Once I had a flavour of it, I fast forwarded those moments.
I have not heard this narrator previously. Her performance here is excellent and I will look out for her in the future.
    Poor ending
The book starts with what you think is going to be a great revenge / get my own back book. All the way through you're waiting for the next bit, mysterious stories give the promises of something bad and surprising. At the end though you think the writer just gave up, the two who should be at revengeful loggerheads just say Hello and how are you doing kind of thing and that's it. It was a major let down, left me feeling cheated
    Couldn't stop listening!
Good wee psychological thriller. Nothing particularly new but good quality, and the narration is excellent.
    Very good
Really well narrated, one of the best yet and makes such a difference. Good story with the odd twist. Nice easy listening.
    Not for animal lovers
I enjoyed this book till I got to the ending. What ending?.I had to look to see if i had missed something, but no it could have done with another few pages
The narration was good, as was the story but if you are squeamish about animal cruelty. You may need to skip forward in some places.

    Excellent
Loved it. The characters were strong and well- rounded, the plot had enough tension to keep you hooked - I found myself sneaking off to get a fix
    Fabulous
    Great story
    Twisting plot
    Good characters, well described
Ending was a fantastic trick, never saw it coming!
    Written to a deadline?
Is there anything you would change about this book?
I would make it faster paced, more eventful, and above all I would supply an ending.
What could Julie Corbin have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Not have lost interest in it following the single revelation and the single action scene.
What does Helen McAlpine bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you had only read the book?
She's a good reader, and brought the characters to life.
    Good grief!
I wouldnt call this tense or a thriller. Most of it is about grief and how to deal with it.
Its well read and written, but you feel like youve been through the emotional wringer at times. Towards the end the pace picks up and the who dunnit answer is revealed.
    An ok listen.
    Interesting tale
I liked the slightly different aspect of narrative voice in this novel: The narrator recounting her story as though in conversation with her dead, beloved twin. Some of the characters and capers were a bit far - fetched but it was entertaining to tge end. A particularly strong reader helped to bring the story to life.

Truly wonderful narration which really brought a very good story to life. Would thoroughly recommend.
Slow to start but awesome when it got going!
Very slow starter and to be honest I didn't like Mags at all (but think that's the point). Great middle and I couldn't stop listening, and the twists were great. Bit disappointed with the end, but that's just me personally. Some harrowing parts but all in context, definitely worth reading.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Excellent narration. Will look out for more by author and narrators.
Slow start but worth the wait
Took me a while to get into the story but the performances are excellent and it becomes much more gripping if you stick with it! Quite quiet if listening on headphones.

Listened almost non stop as it had me gripped. Loved it from start to finish.
Another cracker from C L Taylor
Yet another fantastic standalone novel from C L Taylor. Captivating characters, twists and turns- this is on a par with The Missing. Loved it. Wonderful narration as well. If you like Taylor's previous novels you'll love this one too.
    A really gripping story
I was absolutely hooked right from the very beginning. It was so full of drama and suspense with so many twists and turns. Katie Scarf read the story so well, really living every moment. I can't wait to hear more CL Taylor read by Katie.
    The Escape
very intreaging story ,hard to put down . could not guess how it was going to end
While nothing new, it is well executed
The structure of this jam-packed, fast paced novel is well-laid out, moving from the protoganist's voice to a mysterious person continuously. While the enigmatic chapters were less than mysterious, as I figured out who it was near the beginning, it is clear and not too overdone. It is sad as there are many mothers treated this way especially through the systems, not believed and thought of as unfit. Hence it seems realistic with a sense of tension throughout

    Language: English
    Release date: 03-21-17
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 4 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Supernatural & Paranormal
    Publisher's Summary:
A dazzling look at Mayan mythology incarnate from New York Times best-selling author Steve Alten.
For 2,000 years, the Mayan Calendar has prophesied the end of mankind on a date equating to December 21st, 2012. As that day approaches, greed, corruption, economic collapse, and violence seem to be pushing our species to the predicted brink of disaster. But there is another doomsday threat looming in our near future, a very real threat that can wipe out not only humanity but our entire planet.
Phobos: Mayan Fear, Steve Alten's third book in the Mayan prophecy-based Domain series, is a doomsday rollercoaster ride of adventure that follows Immanuel Gabriel to the end of the world and back again for one last shot at salvation. During Immanuel's journey with his deceased grandfather, archaeologist Julius Gabriel, Julius reveals everything the Mayans knew and feared - from the secrets of creation that predate the Big Bang to the existence of extraterrestrials that have come to Earth to save our species.
The universe is not what it seems, nor is human existence. The ticking clock of physicality that begins at conception and terminates with our final breath is neither the end nor the beginning, but an elaborate ruse constructed as a test.
    We are failing miserably.
    Members Reviews:
    Smooth Writing
Very smooth writing - great transitions and integrated sub-plots. Be aware that this is the third book in a series of three (The Domain Trilogy): Domain; Resurrection; and Phobos. Try to read them in order - although any one book is a great story unto itself.
    buy it
    still waiting on the rest
    Torn
I'm torn because there are aspects of this book that I liked and there are aspects that I didn't like. I loved Domain when I read it 5 or 6 years ago but this 3rd in the series just was a little bit too all over the place for me. I like Alten's writing and The Loch is one of my favorite books I've ever read (and I've read a lot) but I feel like there was too much crammed into this book for it to really completely flow smoothly. I would start reading a chapter and have to pause and say "wait, what?" All of a sudden the characters would be across the planet and weeks down the road and thrown right into the middle of a conflict without really bringing the reader along with the characters. I'm also a little upset that Alten just sent a character back in time so he could change what he thinks the 2012 Doomsday event will be caused by and then re-writes parts of the first novel because sending that character back in time messed up all the past events and now everything is different. For someone reading a series it just sort of makes the first two books pointless and you even state that if the current situations were around when you wrote Domain this is the book you would have written in the first place.
I will say that I have no problem with Alten's politics and personal beliefs that he writes into his books and I totally agree with a lot of them so that is a non factor in any negative feelings I have about his books. I just wished this book was flushed out a little better. There is so much there in only 380+ pages that the story got a little disjointed for me. But with that said the book was a page turner and I didn't know where it was going to go next.

    Dire
Dull. Tedious, slow and very boring. I listened to this dreadful book skipping forward chapter after chapter as it was so slow and boring yet I could still follow the very tedious storyline. I couldn't have cared less about the characters and I found the ending entirely predictable. I wish I hadn't bothered finishing it I really do and have returned it. My advice.. don't bother.

A dark, juicy, deliciously unsettling psychological drama.
Rose has it all - the gorgeous children, the husband, the beautiful home. But then her best friend, Polly, comes to stay.
Very soon Rose's cosy world starts to fall apart at the seams - her baby falls dangerously ill, her husband is distracted.... Is Polly behind it all? It appears that once you invite Polly into your home, it's very difficult to get her out again.
    Members Reviews:
    Seriously?
Seriously? I kept repeating this exclamation while listening to this audio book. The protagonist makes one stupid decision after another, right up until the predictable and stale ending. There was no growth, no aha moment, no pivot where she pulled herself together and found some inner strength to deal with the increasingly unbelievable situation (that frankly anyone would have walked away from long ago). I want those hours of my life back.
Said polly, polly said then rose said then polly said - disappointed with this book
So I average 1 audiobook a week however this one has taken me quite a while. I found the story very flat and found I was falling asleep half way through a chapter.
She said, said polly, polly said, Anna said,
Said Anna ..... badly written found it annoying to listen to
    Could have been tetter...
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, I would, if I'm honest, party because I really like cass. She always delivers a brilliant performance in every book I've read that she's narrated, I've never been disappointed. The story, however? I'm not quite sure how to say what I think. If they asked will I enjoy it? I would probably say, "perhaps."
If youve listened to books by Julia Crouch before, how does this one compare?
    I haven't.
What does Karen Cass bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you had only read the book?
Great voice narration, and expression. She sounds like she's almost part of it.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
It made me feel anger in some parts, I really dislike Gareth, for various reasons. I didn't much like Polly either. I could see points where Rose was clearly be emotionally blackmailed and taken advantage of. There were also a couple of points I thought were highly unrealistic, or unlikely to happen in real life.
    Any additional comments?
So basically, I think the ending could have been better, and to get down to the core of what I'm trying to say, I was left feeling confused at the end of the book. I don't want to give anything away to you my fellow reader, but I was left thinking, "is that it? What's next?" It's one of those endings where you think, is it all going to happen all over again? I would have preferred a different ending to the one we have. I thought it was, to be frank, a little strange. I'm going to read "her husband's lover" when it comes out, and I'll see how it compares. You, on the other hand, may love it. If so, I genuinely hope you enjoy it, don't let me put you off, and happy reading!
    Could be better.
I quite enjoyed this book although the overuse of the words duvet shudder and shivered were mildly annoying. Also how old is her daughter supposed to be? I worked it out at 3 and a half ish.
