    The Betrayed
Am usually enthralled from start to finish with her books this one was very slow to start with but once I preserved I started to enjoy it. I will buy the next chapter in the Byrnes saga if there is one coming out . Still a very gritty read.
    Great London based setting.
A bit slow to start off with, but once I'd got into it, well, what a cracking read, great characters, lots of twists and turns, thoroughly enjoyed this and hope that there's a follow on with the same characters.
    Mediocre at best
I don't understand the great reviews. None of the characters were likeable and the story was really kind of stupid. I'm sorry I wasted my time finishing it.
    Avoid
One of the worst books I have ever had the misfortune to begin reading. Really really poor writing. I can't imagine what possessed the publisher....
    Intense
Intense & captivating thriller. I can't wait for the sequel!

On a wet Monday in January, Jess Mount checks Facebook and discovers her timeline appears to have skipped forward 18 months, to a day when shocked family and friends are posting heartbreaking tributes to her following her death in an accident. Jess is left scared and confused: is she the target of a cruel online prank or is this a terrifying glimpse of her true fate?
Amongst the posts are photos of a gorgeous son she has not yet conceived. But when new posts suggest her death was deliberate, Jess realises that if she changes the future to save her own life, the baby boy she has fallen in love with may never exist.
    Members Reviews:
    Torn on this one.
Ok, I am torn about this, as I did listen to the end, I liked it, but also some of the characters actions / choices did get on my nerves.
It is fiction so Authors can write their characters however they choose, and if they all made the right decisions at the right times, the book would end at chapter 3, so there is that.
Anyway, an interesting plot I would say worth a listen and I will read more from the author.
    After I'm Gone
Sadly DNF. Premis sounded good. Quite liked Jess but found the whole thing boring and predictable. From early on I found myself wondering why a really down to earth, girl of this world didn't see what was coming even with the twist surrounding the future social media posts....got half way through and gave up.
I really do try and see a book right through to the bitter end but I just couldn't with this one. Buy it and see what you think yourself. The narrators did a good job as far as listened to.
    It was ok
I kind of worked out the ending wasn't really a big twist , also the fb messages who or what did that ? Did they continue ? The storyline was good but long drawn out scenes in the middle that didn't really go anywhere to be honest . The ending was short and sweet could have explained more .
    silly
listened to the whole tedious thing. childish and simplistic in the extreme. plot bot resolved in the end.
Not quite sure what to make of this book
It was gripping at the start - middle was boring - end was lacking answers and conclusion. The books description makes it sound really interesting but .... I dunno .... maybe I just missed something?

  • You Should Have Left Audiobook by Daniel Kehlmann

    Title: You Should Have Left
    Author: Daniel Kehlmann
    Narrator: Peter Noble
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 2 hrs and 2 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-15-17
    Publisher: riverrun
    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Psychological
    Publisher's Summary:
A thrilling exploration of psychological disturbance and fear from the best-selling and prize-winning author of Measuring the World.
On retreat in the wintry Alps with his family, a writer is optimistic about completing the sequel to his breakthrough film. Nothing to disturb him except the wind whispering around their glassy house. The perfect place to focus.
Intruding on that peace of mind, the demands of his four-year-old daughter splinter open long-simmering arguments with his wife. 'I love her,' he writes in the notebook intended for his script. 'Why do we fight all the time?' Guilt and expectation strain at his concentration and strain, too, at the walls of the house. They warp under his watch; at night, looking through the window, he sees impossible reflections on the snow outside.
Then words start to appear in his notebook - words he didn't write.
Familiar and forbidding by turns, this is an electrifying experiment in form by one of Europe's boldest writers. The ordinary struggles of a marriage transform, in Kehlmann's hands, into a twisted fable that stays darkly in the mind.
    Members Reviews:
    Powerful, Terrifying, Heartbreaking
This was a powerful little book; surreal and terrifying and heartbreaking. A horrific joy to read, and to experience.
    Terrifying!!
Short and powerful, this story (written in journal entries) is scary in a way that very few books are - turn off the lights and enjoy!!!
Decent Novella with an Oddly Abrupt Ending
A successful screenwriter rents an AirBnB in the mountains to write. His studio wants a sequel, and his family needs the money. But secluded on a vacation cabin with his glamorous, bored actress wife and their daughter, the words begin to flow. Until the bad dreams begin. And right angles donât add up to ninety degrees. And his little girl wakes up speaking prophecies of doom.
Veteran novelist Daniel Kehlmann is a household name in Germany, but remains largely unknown to English-speaking readers. This novella might change that. Mixing elements of Shirley Jackson, Stephen King, and Elizabeth Hand, Kehlmann creates the kind of creeping dread that American paperback readers love, channeled through the kind of linguistic mindset that gave us Thomas Mann and Günter Grass.
The story unfolds as our nameless narratorâs journal. On one hand, he jots notes for his screenplay, a John Hughes-like coming-of-age comedy where two âBestiesâ adjust to an adult friendship. The story provides ironic commentary on events building around him, as his vacation home apparently grows new bedrooms overnight, reveals a massive mountain nobody else can see, and insinuates itself into his marriage. Symbolism abounds.
The story immediately invites comparison to Kingâs The Shining and Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House. Kehlmann doesn't even pretend to deny such allusions, though he doesn't acknowledge them either. But such comparisons, while accurate, are nevertheless incomplete. Kehlmann doesn't so much present a horror novella, as a novella of what Freud calls âthe Uncanny,â the subconscious made manifest in the protagonist's senses.
The house seemingly accentuates its inhabitantsâ identities. When the narrator and his wife fight, they fight like feral cats cornered in the same Dumpster. When they agree, they mesh like two hemispheres of the same brain.

    Love this author!
Another excellent story By Heather Guldenkauf! I had the honor of hearing and meeting Ms Guldenkauf when she spoke at a fundraiser in East Moline, IL. She talked about how she came up with ideas for her novels. She also was able to answer several questions from her audience. I have now read 5 of her novels and I'm not finished. She'll put you on the edge of your seat with this one. Be prepared not to want to put it down!!
    Page Turning Read
I enjoyed this thriller that was recommended in a Washington Post article this spring. Gudenkauf takes the reader aptly into a world of the recently deaf as the main character pieces together the central mystery. There are several "don't go down to the basement" scenes that keep those pages turning. I'll be recommending this one to my book club.
    Good story and suspense!
I loved this book...couldnât put it down! I love Heather Gudenkaufâs way of describing scenes....I always feel Iâm right in the story as an unseen observer. Now Iâm bummed that I read it so fast and itâs over!
    Bringing light to deafness
Amazing story & very eye opening. Gudenkauf never disappoints! Her stories are creative, suspenseful & touch on important social issues. I recommend all her books.
    Good thriller
Really enjoyed this story - thrilling mystery and good info on medical treatments. Main character was so strong and like able. Good story.

A BIG Story, a giant idea, and a Dream to Remember
Looking forward to the next two books!
The story moves and changes after the first chapter to get into the main characters. The bedtime stories and how this relates from the grandfather to his grandson introduces the idea, but we don't find out what the real connection is until the end. The characters come alive seeming real and paint a picture. A big story, a giant idea, and a dream to remember.

    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Psychological
    Publisher's Summary:
The author of the number-one New York Times best-seller and global phenomenon The Girl on the Train returns with Into the Water, her addictive new novel of psychological suspense.
"Hawkins is at the forefront of a group of female authors - think Gillian Flynn and Megan Abbott - who have reinvigorated the literary suspense novel by tapping a rich vein of psychological menace and social unease...there's a certain solace to a dark escape, in the promise of submerged truths coming to light." (Vogue)
A single mother turns up dead at the bottom of the river that runs through town. Earlier in the summer, a vulnerable teenage girl met the same fate. They are not the first women lost to these dark waters, but their deaths disturb the river and its history, dredging up secrets long submerged.
Left behind is a lonely 15-year-old girl. Parentless and friendless, she now finds herself in the care of her mother's sister, a fearful stranger who has been dragged back to the place she deliberately ran from - a place to which she vowed she'd never return.
With the same propulsive writing and acute understanding of human instincts that captivated millions of fans around the world in her explosive debut thriller, The Girl on the Train, Paula Hawkins delivers an urgent, twisting, deeply satisfying story that hinges on the deceptiveness of emotion and memory as well as the devastating ways that the past can reach a long arm into the present.
Beware a calm surface - you never know what lies beneath.

So bad, I couldn't finish it.
I was looking forward to Paula Hawkins new book. Unfortunately, it was so disappointing that I couldn't finish it. The switching between multiple characters made for a confusing read. Not any of the characters were relatable nor did I care about them at all.
    Don't waste your money.
The construction of this story is too heavy to allow ...
The construction of this story is too heavy to allow flow. The story is told through the visions of so many people that you loose what it is all about. Definitively no comparison to her earlier work.
    Terrible
Sorry, looked forward to this, but quit halfway due to too many characters, no guide to who they are or who they''re talking about (coz they're not engaged in any actions), it's a struggle to follow which timeframe each chapter is in.
Paula Hawkins needs to rethink her narrative abilities
where is the real Paula Hawkins. this is a lot of gibberish. confusing characters and totally plodding.
    Convoluted
I would have returned this book to Amazon but it was preordered and I didn't start reading it on the release date. Needs a rewrite! Too many characters. Confusing plot, running off into Neverland. I stuck it out only because (1) I couldn't return it, and (2) Girl on the Train was such a good read. What a disappointment! :-(

    Excellent story
Intriguing story, very good. For me it's a shame it was written as a conversation/letter to "you" (the sister) this I found annoying at times and the reason I gave it 4 stars and not 5. Despite that very good, would recommend.
The first audible I have given up on
Boring story, 2 dimensional characters and a flat performance. I've given up 3 hours in.
