    Publisher's Summary:
When Harden Campbell wakes cold and beaten in a dirt-floor cell, he finds only three other things in the room with him: the mutilated body of his good friend, an ancient typewriter, and a stack of blank paper, the top sheet of which has a single typed sentence: "Tell me a story." He knows the message is from Coyote, his brilliant, megalomaniacal roommate whose lust for power and reverence has recently revealed him for the true sociopath he is. Now, as the founder of a new religion with disturbing roots - Revelation - Coyote's most evil side has emerged.
From the moment Harden sees that stack of paper, he knows his one chance of escape is through his own words, and only his ability to successfully recount the dark story of what happened over the past year at Wyland University will determine whether he lives to see the woman he loves once again - or is silenced forever. This will be the most difficult story Harden has ever written, and each word must be chosen with the utmost care. Because Coyote will be reading each and every one of them.
    Critic Reviews:
"An enthralling thriller...Wilson infuses his terrifying plot with intricate twists and turns, all totally credible." (Publishers Weekly)
"This is a sledgehammer of a novel, slamming away at the foundations of modern cult religions until nothing is left but rubble to be carted away...a powerful story...an intense experience for those who can take it." (Booklist)

    Outrageously Good!
This is the *best* audio book I've listened to in a good, long while! From top to bottom I was kept guessing; the characters are endlessly intriguing and the plot is a twisting narrative of suspense, action and fascination. There is a prominent aspect of exploring human psychology in this tale that ends up sending this story spinning off into the unexpected. I'm not usually drawn to character driven plots, but this one was so well written that I will be seeking out more works by Carter Wilson. Timothy McKean delivers a phenomenal performance, adding thrills and bringing the story to life. I would recommend this book to anyone at all who enjoys the thriller genre! 10/10
I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher.

*I requested and was granted an Audible code for this audio book*
This was a fantastic, cinematic, gripping thriller of a ride! I was on the edge of my seat throughout, and only stopped for sleep because I just had to. Amazing characters and plotting, I thought I knew what was coming next only to be delightfully blindsided!
The descriptions of the cell made me feel like I was really there, able to see and feel the dirt beneath me, hearing the ticking of the typewriter. So wonderfully written, it was just amazing! When the narrator talked about certain things in his past, how it affected him then and now, it really hit home and was very spot on. I know it wasnt a focal point of the story, but I was very taken in by this, the embarrassment and fear of telling someone, and the way it affects a person later in life. The author managed to do this without seeming like it was simply for shock value; it truly helped make up Hardens character and personality.
I was thoroughly engrossed throughout, this is such a well-done book. 5 massive Platypires.
    Now, the narrator.

Warning: This audiobook is very addictive. It also has sexual content, bad language, violence, and the most malevolent man you will hate to love.

    Great start!!
This is the first book in the series that I have listen to. It will definitely not be the last. Crispin, I can tell just from the backstory that he will be evil and all because of his evil father. This is definitely a story where nature versus nurture is obvious. It makes you realize how dearly people need their mother's love and their fathers approval and growing up without one and never getting the other, definitely plays a huge role in the person your going to be. I can only imagine what this series has in store. Sarah Puckett, the narrator did a fabulous job. She kept me engaged and the emotion and nuances in her voice were spot on. I hope they keep her on for the remainder of the series. I would recommend to grab this short story and get started on what is sure to be a great series.
A dark, evil and vicious read!
Xen is cunning and ruthless as seen in the prologue, which definitely caught my attention, making me curious as to what will happen in the upcoming chapters.
An emotionally charged read - I feel so sorry for Rain. Xen is so cruel and vicious! Such a vile creature Xen is - utterly cruel!
Overall, a deliciously dark and sexy read!
Full of magic, betrayal, lies, darkness, demons and in the freedom from a tyrant.
Perfect for readers of dark fantasy.
An enjoyable listen made worthwhile by the narrator.
    Loved it
I loved when I read this book but it was simply wonderful listening to it to me it brought the book to life
Truly an amazing book by such a talented author
    Great story and narration!
I felt so bad for Crispin. He was used as a pawn by his father to be molded into his father's expectations. His mother was such a gentle soul. And she would've given anything to have her son. Great story that had me so emotional. First time heading this narrator and I really enjoyed her work !
    great!
Wow! This was a fantastic story that had me hooked from the beginning and I can't wait to listen to more in this series! The narration was perfect and there were twists and turns in this story I didn't see coming. I can't wait to check out more by this author!

Full of twists and turns, with an ending you will never see coming and characters that will stay with you long after the audiobook has finished, The Last Act of Hattie Hoffman is a gripping psychological mystery perfect for fans of Emma Cline's The Girls and Clare Mackintosh's I See You.

    Brilliant
I never give 5star reviews but this book deserves *****
Very well written, great combination of sparse and lyrical prose, well plotted story rising and falling in tension to an unexpected conclusion. The story is not original but the revealing of each characters part in the story, their motivations and intentions make it fresh, engrossing and utterly believable. The characters are very well developed and feel grown & grounded in the rural landscape they inhabit. Superbly told by all narrators.
I'm eager to read/listen to Mindy Mejia's next novel.
    WHAT A FIND
I chose this as love Jeff Harding narration. This production, with 3 narrators was excellent. the writing crisp and a "page turner". SO enjoyed the whole thing.
    Excellent in every way
Fantastic plot , the narrators were outstanding. The characters in this book were all really rich, contemporary, and the dialogue so clever and full of empathy. The feel of a psych thriller a la Gone G & the Girl on Train but for me every bit as good of not original in style . Didn't see it coming either.
    Great book great listen.

    Members Reviews:
    This is a phenomenal story.
"Reasoning to Live" is an extraordinary book. I've never read a story quite like this one. I had to keep reminding myself that it's based on a true story because it's so far removed from anything I've ever known. It's exceptionally well-written; the author never leaves the reader feeling as if he's struggling to find the right words because the story is coming straight from his heart.
Though the book ends with a feeling that Tuneson Ruh is still suffering, it also feels as if the story is far from over. I wonder if maybe Tuneson's reasoning to live is a decision he makes on a daily basis. However, there's hope in the courage and strength he's gained and in the unshakeable friendships which now grace his life.
This is a must-read. I highly recommend this book. Buy it as a gift for someone you care about and also buy a copy for yourself. It truly is a phenomenal story.

    Members Reviews:
    Urban Fantasy That Does Flinch
Fans of China Mieville and William Gibson take note: Lauren Buekes??? ???Zoo City??? is every bit gritty noir as it is urban fantasy, and it shoots along like bullets through a warm night sky.
Which means, this story is not a story for the faint of heart. It culminates in one of the roughest blood baths I???ve ever listened to. The worldbuilding is everything you???d want it to be --particularly the ghettoization of the Zoos -- and Beukes turns a phrase better than most and writes broken characters with heart. Her Zinzi is an antihero who despite all her flaws and failings, somehow manages to make us care about her. That said, the ending fell a bit short for me ??? not so much a payoff of counterfeit bills, but more like a stage magician who closes out her stunning show with a rabbit trick. It???s not bad, and there's resolution, but it left me wishing for something different.
I can???t comment too much on the authenticity of Justine Eyre???s accent, but she did an impressive job reading this one ??? from differentiating between the characters, the internal dialogue of Zinzi, and all-in-all carrying this story.
If you ever wondered what might have happened if James Ellroy was raised in Johannesburg by a witch who moonlighted writing 419 scam emails on the side, this is your ticket. All in all, well worth the listen, and I???m eager to see where Beukes takes us next.
Appalling narration spoiled a so-so book
Zoo City floats your boat or it doesn't. The essential idea of emotional baggage being carried around in the form of an animal as well as conveying a special sensitivity or power to the damaged person is interesting. The characterisation is light. The descriptions of South Africa are perhaps less remarkabe if you live in Johannesburg - as I do. Personally I found the end too neat and convenient and the final redemption unconvincingly complete.
I had a much bigger problem with the narration. It was shocking! The accents were inconsistent and poor. Like listening to an Austrailian actor doing half a dozen accents he has heard for an hour each, all you hear is ham Austrailian. Nobody speaks like that. As a consequence of having a non South African reader, words were seriously mispronounced - in three languages! Slang words especially lose their impact and emotion when said incorrectly. There were five or six moments when I almost stopped listening to this audiobook because listening to it being read so badly detracted from the writing.
If this is your genre and you are intersted in Zoo City, I recommend reading it.
Every bit as good as it's billed.
With a cover blurb from William Gibson ("Very, *very*good!") and an Arthur C. Clarke Award, a World Fantasy Award nomination, and other glowing recommendations behind it (Jeff VanderMeer's review in the NY Times for example) I had very high expectations for Beukes's second novel. It's every bit as "phantasmagorical" and wonderful as billed, with a delicious noir-ish plot set atop a sea of bizarre characters in a transfigured modern world.

    Fun new Urban Fantasy Series
This was a good introduction to an Urban Fantasy series I hadn't seen before. It takes place in Chicago and has a couple solid twists. I am interested in seeing how the series develops over time.
The narrator does a good job with the different characters.
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
    Weak characters and world building.
What could Skye Knizley have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
There's practically no world building in this book. It felt like we outright thrown into this fantasy world without much of an introduction. All the characters are also underdeveloped and unrelatable. I didn't connect with any of them and thus didn't enjoying listening to their story. More than a supernatural thriller, this sounded like a halfhearted romance.
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
Suzanne T. Fortin did a marvelous job with the narration. Each character had a distinct and believable voice and she emoted the different emotions well. She did well with the content given to her. It's the story itself that fails.
    Any additional comments?
I received this audiobook for free from the author / narrator / publisher in exchange for an unbiased review.

    Overall okay
The story was fairly entertaining with fewer grammatical errors than in the first book, but way too many instances of the f-bomb and the word "quiddity." I liked the character of Cal, but Shelley is annoying, though she is a much more self-confident person than Cal.
This story was set in an old psych hospital populated by the ghosts of insane patients, doctors , and nurses--the familiar setting of numerous B-movies. Robert, the main character, is injured and briefly crosses back to the Marrow (some place which must be crossed after death, as far as I can gather). More questions are raised about the identity of Sean and why he has chosen Robert to send the ghosts on to the afterlife.
I will likely get at least one more book in this series. The narrator was fairly good and I also knew which character was speaking. These first two books are okay for listening while doing chores because the story does not require intent concentration.
    Where to start...
Would you try another book from Patrick Logan and/or Michael Pauley?
I'm not sure. I'm staying away for now.
What could Patrick Logan have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
The female main character is irritating. She also says the "f" word far too many times, and with such gusto and sarcasm, it is uncountable. It gets in the way of the story and though the "f" word family (-er, -ing, etc) doesn't bother me, it's so overused by this annoying character that I was totally over it half-way through the story. I started hating the character and hoped she would die in the mental hospital they were stuck in.
What aspect of Michael Pauleys performance would you have changed?
I think his voice is very robotic and slow. It took a long time for me to get used to it. In fact, I just passed on the book "Skin" because in the first five words of the sample audio clip, I knew it was him. I looked up all the books he has narrated, an this one was in the list. Which reminded me that I needed to review it.

A ghost, a witch, and a researcher go into a bar...
I received an ARC in exchange for my unbiased review. Max and his Scoobies are back in action! Caught between a powerful witch and a wild bunch of magic cultists, our favorite bunch of researching paranormal investigators are up to their necks trying to find three special bones, rescue a friend, keep the world from ending, and oh yes, keep Max's wife and his mother from killing each other. It is definitely a wild ride. Every book gets better and more of the paranormal world unfolds with each adventure. I have purchased and read every book in the series and can hardly wait for the next one. Do yourself a favor and get into this series. Great fun and you even learn a little U.S. history while you read.
A curse, some ghosts, witches, evil thugs, and a mother-in-law...which is worse?
Southern Rites (Max Porter Mysteries Book 7) by Stuart Jaffe is book 7 in the series but can be read as a stand alone. This is the wonderful series of Max, who is a researcher and his wife who can see ghosts and Drummond who is a ghost. These three solve mysteries and get into all kinds of trouble along the way. In this book, they are again dealing with a curse, more ghosts, witches, and skeleton bones with curses on them. Someone is does not want Max and his team to find out what is going on and is about to make Max and his wife ghosts too. To top everything off, Max's mom makes an unannounced visit. It is a fun, crazy, suspense-filled, action packed, great fantasy read filled with ghosts, magic, and witches.
    Keeps Getting Better and Better!

After having dealt with one powerful family, they are now caught between warring factions fighting to find and gain control of three very special bones AND deal with the unexpected arrival of Max's mother who, unwittingly complicates his life (and the case) even further! Definitely a wild ride! I have purchased and read every book in the series and eagerly await the next adventure. ok, but a spin-off
Ren: The Man Behind the Monster (Book #1)
This was ok. It's perfectly readable, the narrator did a good job and it's part of an interesting world. The thing is that I didn't know that all of Noffke's series are set in the same world when I started this, so I was surprised. That would have been fine though, except that Ren is OBVIOUSLY a character from another series. And since Ren gets mixed up with the Lucidites society, I imagine he's a character in the Lucidites series.
The book does stand alone. But you can still tell it's a spinoff. You can FEEL it. The book is basically the highlights of one man's 45 year life, starting at about 7. As you can imagine, that doesn't leave room for a lot of detailed exploration. It's his first person recount of living his life. Several times he references other occurrences or people, but says he's not telling that story and instructs the reader to find that book.
I've not read any of the Lucidties books, but I'd bet even money that at least some the events that Ren talks about are the events of those books from his perspective, instead of whomever lives them in the other series. This was not enjoyable for me, to just get a bullet point version of something with instruction to go find it elsewhere if I want more.
What's more, I found Ren a seriously unlikable character. I found it hard to spend a whole book with a bitter, narcissistic, unpleasant man. I suspect you're supposed to read this after whatever other books he shows up in and already like him. You're supposed to know him and want his tragic backstory. Because that's what this feels like. It feels like the author decided she liked a character in another book and decided to give him his own backstory. It's readable, but without previously knowing or caring about the character I found him lacking.
I'll be finishing the compilation, because surely the rest can't continue as the first did. But so far, I'm not thrilled with Ren.

Ren: God's Little Monster (Book #2)
I enjoyed this book more than book one. In book one I really felt enjoyment was dependent on having read other series by the author. Ren is an exceedingly arrogant and unpleasant character and I found I couldn't like him. But I expect that those who had read the other series encountered Ren after his redemption and came into the book liking him, but knowing he used to be a little shite. I'd not read another series with Ren in it, so I only knew him as the little shite.
But I have the 4 book compilation, so I took a little break after book one and then came back for book two. And I mostly enjoyed it. Ren is somewhat redeemed and in all his arrogance he really is funny. Pair this with the fact that those around him understand him and aren't hurt by the hurtful things he says, they enjoy the scathing wit, and he becomes a lovable rogue.
So, I enjoyed him. I enjoyed seeing him reflected in the new addition to his life. But I generally thing the reveal at the end was one step too far.
