Excellent

This is the best book on the subject of prayer that I have ever read. I have listened to it several times, and each time I find something new. It stresses the concept of prayer as being time spent with God, and that it is more of a relationship than a one sided dialogue. I would highly recommend this book.

Prayer - a profound open discussion

I am always reluctant reading books on prayer, as I usually expect pat answers and formulas on how to do it "right." Being a Christian for many years, and praying for just as many, I've never felt that I really understand prayer.

Yancy, in this philosophical, apologetic, somewhat theological, and honest work, explains the ins and outs of prayer in a way that has profoundly impacted my life. To be sure, he doesn't have all the answers (he doesn't attempt to). He asks the hard questions about prayer that we all have stirring deep inside us, and gently points us to Christ as he helps us understand the real reason we pray.

This is a must read for anyone.

Great Book on Old Testament Leaders

Would you consider the audio edition of Patriarchs and Prophets to be better than the print version?

If you are looking for an audio edition of Patriarchs and Prophets, this is the one I would recommend. There are others available, but the quality of this recording is the best I've heard. If you are trying to decide between a print copy and an audio copy of this book, I would say, go with whichever one you will actually use.

I have The Great Controversy and The Desire of Ages by Eddie Hernandez and they are all very good quality audiobooks.

I enjoy this book because it brings the old testament to life. Patriarchs and Prophets is a bit long to listen to straight through, but it does keep my interest. I highly recommend this book.

This book provides a historical narrative with simultaneous commentary as you go along. It is unique and very informative. But it is very detailed, so prepare for a good listen. Not for those who want a quick overview.

Great book!!!

The book is for people who are confused about their life and are looking for honest and unselfish answers. When you look at a boy doing really bad in life in a third world country,the last thing you would expect is to see that person to be a visiting scholar at Cambridge University!! The book revolves around how God called Ravi literally from the bed of suicide to the forefront of Christian evangelism and apologetics. A great read!!!

An enjoyable book to listen to.

What an enjoyable book to listen to. I heard Ravi speak before and sometimes he can get pretty intellectual. But this is about his life, and how he came to believe in the God of the Bible. And who could be a better narrator than Ravi himself. It is a fascinating story.

There is no doubt that the Lord is with Ravi Zachariah in his gift to illuminate the revelation of the truth and love of God's Word.

Great Book! Great abridgment and narration.

This book is chiefly about research into documents deposited in the National Library of Paris from the 1950's-1970's detailing the existence of a Secret Society known as the Priory of Sion which has orchestrated major events in world history, preserved mystical secrets of immense power, and counted among its Grand Masters some of the most important figures in Western culture.

The research extends to the grand claim that Priory serves also as guardian over the bloodline of Jesus Christ who may not have died on the cross but rather survived to bear children with the Magdalene.

The authors piece together the information in the documents using erudite scholarship combined with brazen sprees of speculation. And the existence of Priory itself has by now been written off as an elaborately orchestrated hoax.

Yet there still exist historical mysteries that made the hoax possible in the first place. These indicate not only secret machinations behind some of the most significant events in world history, but unknown sources of immense wealth and power accessible to the story's key players that cannot be ignored regardless of the Priory's existence or non-existence.

This book also formed the historical or mythological framework behind the plot of The Da Vinci Code.

Very intresting ... but ...

Taken by itself and without the "lens" of pre-conception, this is fairly fascinating stuff. It is this work that contains the basis of much that is in Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code ... but this is the real deal. It is unconventional research by people who write documentaries for British Television. The big problem is that Pierre Plantard, the source of Priory of Sion lore, has, since the publication of this book, been proven to be a hoax and a forger. That discovery almost completely takes the wind out of the sails of the hypotheses presented by these authors. It reduces this work to a curiosity rather than the "big deal" it was 25 years ago (when published).

Great listen, but not "true" history.

First I want to say this book is a great read (or listen). I give it 5 stars because it REALLY is enjoyable. The thing is, a lot of the stuff in here time has shown not to be true. I think it's very important going into this book knowing that them Priory has been proven to be a hoax, and on top of the the person(s) that purported that never meant to imply that he (they) were decedents of Jesus.

There are a lot of real facts and history in this book, but it ends up incredibly mixed with personal opinion and flawed leaps of logic. Even with all of that in mind, I still can't bring myself to call this book "fiction", I believe the authors wrote in sincerely and at the time of writing believed what they wrote.

Good Listen

I liked this book. It offered several options for digging deeper into possible problems one may be dealing with. I wish it would have covered all the detail Dr. Cloud would mention.

Do you feel like a lost sheep?

It is no accident that David chose the relationship between a sheep and a shepherd as an example of our relationship with the Lord. Philip Keller draws on his experience as a shepherd and in this superbly written book one can only leave with a rejuvenated relationship with the Great Shepherd. You will never be able to look at the 23rd Psalm or sheep the same way again.

disappointed

The narration does not follow the book. Also there is only 2 chapters shown to navigate through when the written book has 12 chapters. So finding the different chapters is difficult unfortunately. The book is wonderful, sure wish this audible followed the text of the book.

Magnificent

I absolutely love this book. A great narrator. True insight into the nature of sin and regeneration. Would recommend this to anyone willing to become accustomed to the old English. Go in with a dictionary.

Perfect Narration Delivers Profound Wisdom

The Confessions of St. Augustine is the autobiography of Saint Augustine of Hippo, which details his conversion to Christianity. Through his philosophical ponderings and thoughts on ideology, it is clear that many of the events in Saint Augustines life tie back to many ideals and values found in Christianity. Saint Augustine provides readers with many great insights into the nature of sin and the ability to be reborn in Christianity.

For anyone interested in the history of the Christian church, this book is a must read. Not only will readers and listeners learn a lot about the early days of Christianity, but many of Saint Augustines life lessons can be transferred to present day, meaning that each read or listen will bring new things to learn.

Because this book is written in Old English, listening to the audio is highly recommended rather than simply reading it, which can be quite challenging. The proper enunciation of the narrator helps to communicate Saint Augustines ideals the way it was intended to, ideals that are important to anyone who follows the Christian faith.

David McCallion really does a wonderful job not only with his dictation but also his pace, and pronunciation of words making the text easier to understand, which is key when reading a text that has this much history behind it. Overall this is a great book to add to your collection and a very delightful listen.

Makes great points about sin and holiness

This is a really good book about dealing with sin and embracing holiness. The last two hours (or second half of the book) were more meaningful to me. The first part has more to do with why we should deal with sin in our lives and why we should seek after holiness. The second half deals with how to deal with sin and how to pursue holiness.

This book would not necessarily rank up there with the top ten spiritual books on my shelf, but it is valuable enough that I may refer to it again. I felt that the best points made by the author were about approaching sin and holiness with prayer, and I liked that the author provided specific examples of prayers for specific topics.

John Eldredge doesn't pull any punches, but he is decently encouraging about our ability to succeed. The juxtaposition of sin and holiness was necessary and well defined in his discussion of approaching God and living a life free from the anxiety that accompanies sin (otherwise known as leading a holy life).

The author's approach is to explain the reason for repentance, to peel away the layers of exuses that often accompany the habit of sin, to get the reader to recognize certain thought patterns (he calls them "agreements"), and to prayerfully banish them from the life of the reader, and finally, to teach the reader to approach every day with prayers that are designed to fend off temptation and thank God for the amount of holiness that is already possessed in the reader's life.

Overall, it was a good treatment of a difficult topic. The author is the narrator, and he has a good reading voice, although I thought his cadence was a bit repetitive.

Gospel of Thomas is somewhat a misnomer

The book is less an exploration of the Gospel of Thomas than an exploration of the competing movements and ideas that were present in the early Christian Church. It begins by comparing the gospels of John and Thomas using a unique, to this listener anyway, hypothesis but moves quickly to a broader view of the first three centuries of Christianity. It is none the less an excellent representation of the impeccable research and sensitivity of Elaine Pagels.

The listener is brought to see the importance of the Nag Hammadi texts to the understanding of First-Third Century "Gnosticism" and what would have been lost had these documents not been hidden some 1600 years ago. The question occurs: What documents might not have been preserved and thus lost from these formative years of Christianity? Based on the importance of the Nag Hammadi texts, we are intellectually poorer for any that might have been lost.

The book is very easy to follow. The narrator does an excellent job in reading the text with authority and understanding. It is, technically speaking, a very good presentation.

I certainly recommend it to those who have interests in this area of historical research.

Dr. Pagels hits a home run (almost a grand slam)

I am not sure why she did not include the full text of Thomas, perhaps in deference to her friends who have published the Gospel of Thomas already. I am sure her book has led to many purchases. I was expecting the Gospel of Thomas to be a part of the book, based on the title. She compares and contrasts Thomas to the Gospel of John. So, read these books first and keep them by your side as you read or listen to this book. I found the book a great read, with some pretty good insight into the mind and culture of early Christians and the way they approached and developed the canon. Her creativity and style are very engaging and you forget you are actually reading one of the very top scholars of pre-orthodox Christianity.
