Processing loss

I can see returning to this book many many times as I process my own loss.

Inspiring book for Christians who experience significant loss.

This is a very thoughtful and inspiring book written to people in general dealing with grief, with a Christian emphasis.

I was pleased to hear the author, at least throughout the beginning and middle of the book, acknowledge randomness and chance in the world especially in his significant experience of loss. However, I believe it was in chapter 12 that he claimed God's sovereignty of "total control" of all events of life. This appeal to sovereignty was not an isolated event and in following chapters he made the same claims. I hardly think appealing to meticulous sovereignty is helpful to non-Christians and even for many Christians this is controversial, though we have come to understand that this provides them with a level of comfort in their grief. I'd much rather have had him offer an explanation of how grief can be endured in light of God NOT in "total control."

What did you love best about A Grace Disguised?

I downloaded this book when I heard my Pastor mention it in a sermon last year. I was going through the beginning stages of my separation/divorce and was experiencing tremendous grief, sadness and pain. This book really validated my feelings regarding the whirlwind of emotion I was experiencing and helped heal my heart and help me understand the journey through ANY kind of loss. I would recommend this book to anyone suffering from a loss in their life. This book offers comfort through Jerry Sittser's own personal experience as well as his belief in God and the bible as well as other spiritual teachings. Definitely instrumental in my own grieving process.

I cried quite a bit. This book really touched my heart... it helped me acknowledge my emotions, validate them, sit with them and move through them with peace and understanding.

It's as if the reader is eves-dropping on a personal conversation between Lewis and his correspondent. At times I wondered what Lewis would think of his personal correspondence being published.

Letters to Malcolm is my favorite C.S. Lewis book. I enjoyed hearing it read to me. This was the last book Lewis prepared for publishing. To my mind, it is his most personal. I looked among his friends to find Malcolm only to learn that he is a composite of friends Lewis had.

I thought the reader spoke a bit fast and often without much inflection. Still, I will listen to it again.

I have a better understanding of prayer.

The personal touch. I had a real sense of the character of C.S. Lewis. What a remarkable thinker he is. I laughed, smiled, reflected, determined to be more fervent in prayer, and listen to this audible a few more times.

One of the best books around for this topic

Dr. Stanley gives a very broad-spectrum approach to reaching your full potential as a Christian. He addresses time, resource, and health management, he gives clear and simple advice about ways to control influences and thought patterns, and he makes the point very plainly that God is to be center of your every decision, but he doesn't leave you alone to figure out God's will by yourself. He gives concrete examples of how to pray for guidance in making decisions.

A lot of the book is about trusting God - trusting that He will make his plans known to you if you ask Him before making your own plans, trusting that God is good and that He has your best interests in mind, trusting that God is capable of bringing about His purposes through you no matter what you think you are or are not good at, and trusting that He will always be there whether you succeed or fail. Dr. Stanley uses examples of Biblical characters and how they dealt with trust issues, decisions, and stress.

For me, this book really brought home the importance of prayer BEFORE making decisions. It also illuminated for me just how important one decision can be and therefore, how important it is to bring ALL decisions in prayer to God.

I would encourage anyone who is feeling overwhelmed and frustrated by life to read this book. I am not suggesting that your life will be completely fixed in ten minutes after reading it, but I know that mine has already improved because I have read it. Dr. Stanley offers a great deal of encouragement and practical advice that would be of great help to any believer.

This book is definitely a God sent just for me.

I won this book through a radio station. God answered my prayer and I won this book twice. Narrator did an excellent job. but writer has done fantastic from cover to cover. This man of God is definitely anointed by God and no doubt, God uses him to show others the character of a true godly man. when it comes to obedience, Dr. Stanley comes to mind. I love this man of God.

Good Lecture

This was a good recording of a lecture series that Rohr did back in 1985. Its over 20 years old and many of the problems he talks about are still here. Most of what he shares is pretty timeless. The only real complaint I have is that during the Q&A part at the end of each lecture it is nearly impossible to hear what the audience is asking. He often summarizes the question before answering, but not always.

Food for Thought for Every Catholic

I really enjoyed listening to these conversational talks by Father Richard Rohr. Although they were recorded a while ago, the messages are still very much applicable to today. EVERY Catholic, especially modern Americans (he speaks in Ohio, so he sometimes references the American experience), should listen to these talks. Rohr's cadence of speech reminds me of Dr. Randy Pausch, which is a high compliment since I have listened to his Last Lecture multiple times. Rohr's talks definitely get you thinking about who you are as a Catholic and who you were meant to be.

What made the experience of listening to Ministries of Mercy the most enjoyable?

I would definitely recommend this book to any and all believers. The author really challenges the church and it's members to stop and self examine our motives and our mindset for ministry. He supports everything with scripture and really urges us to rethink giving of our time and resources.

Personally I bought the audi version duo to financial possibilities. I consider the print version more personal. If I want to look up something from this book, it's harder to find it on the audio file than in the summary of the book.

For me, the end of the book( the conclusion) was the most memorable part. The author's humble and honesty that they can also be wrong, or make mistakes made them reliable.

What about Jonathan Petersens performance did you like?

Accurate, understandable for foreign English speakers, who's mother tongue is not English, but they have advanced skills.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The authors purpose to be non-denominational.

As for me as a hungarian who would like to master English, it helped a lot. And as for a Christian it gave true principles in studying the Bible.

If you find yourself uneasy with some of the ways the Christian church practices the beliefs of the Bible this book would be good for you. The content of this book really makes you think about some of the beliefs you have grown up believing in the church and whether or not they are built on biblical truth. It causes you to question why you believed that way and gives you some biblical insight at how to break this "Crazy Maker."

Actually...I was a little dissappointed that John or Henry was not reading the book but Peterson did a nice job with the reading.

Heart

I enjoyed hearing the stories of all the characters and how their lives played out. I liked how the Broker and Executive met and spent some time together. I feel maybe the Broker could of been more mean in order to show a total transformation at the end. To see a completely changed heart. Nonetheless, the point of the story still got across to the audience at least in my opinion. I would share this book to one of my close friends because we believe in God and the book explains how all is God's amen. I give it all stars because the author had the idea to write a story on generosity and he succeeded.

A lesson...

(Actually more than one ;-) Regardless of your relationship with Christ this book is a reminder of where we stand in the world and how we can make it better. It's even more relevant since it's a loose translation of a real-life executive...enjoy and share!!!

Please be careful if you are the one suffering.

This really brings it all up. It was intense when I was relating to my own abuse. My mother did not speak out for me. Now at 56, I feel paralized by the guilt of choosing not to fight. My grandson was abused and I was too afraid, for so many reasons. Now I spend my present life trying to make the past different.

It took me a few times over a course of a week to listen to all of this book. I wonder if I should have just spared myself. I already knew what had happened and how I feel about it & after 9 years can usually get away from those memories and feelings, but of course they seep out (all the time!) in my daily behavior.

I guess, now that I did listen to all of it, wish that I had not put myself through listening to this, but that's because it is so spot on.

Astounding

This book gave such overwhelming examples of exact and specific ways that Christianity has changed our world, I find myself quite blown away. A fabulous book that any history lover (Christian or otherwise) should make sure not to miss.
