    Publisher's Summary:
A true story of courage and compassion in a school under siege
As 870 children waited in fear, their elementary school rushed into lockdown mode. As the nation faced yet another Sandy Hook story of tragedy, one woman rewrote the ending.
Yet the story doesn't start with those first steps Michael Hill took into that Atlanta elementary school. It starts with Antoinette Tuff, a woman who faced her own pain, hurt, and rejection, yet held onto grace, faith, and hope. A hope that anchored her in the most high stakes of moments, a grace that allowed her to empathize with a hurting young man, and a faith that gave her the courage to love him back from the brink.
This is more than just the amazing account of tragedy averted. It's the evidence of what we can do when we allow ourselves to be used by God. And it's a story of how God uses all of our life experiences - the good and the bad - to prepare us for our own moment of divine purpose.

    Five Stars
This book was amazing! Not only well written, but written with some humor. Very expressive and very heartfelt!
    Every Strong and Encouraging Women
I gave it five stars. I it's was warm and sincere. It was a very encouraging book that provoked me to see things differently in my life. I originally got the book to gather emotional content of what took place during my speaking engagement, but I got so much more out of it. I think the author is a brilliant person and therefore thought to myself, how wonderful it would be to meet Antoinette Tuff. Maybe some day our paths will cross. May she continue to live abundantly.
    Antoinette Tuff, God's Vessel!
First, let's give God the glory and praise he deserves! I cannot find the words to express how grateful I am that Antoinette wrote her story. Although she did a tremendous job defusing this mentally disturbed young man, the real story here is her journey getting to this place. She is a compass for the rest of us trying to find our way to what God wants to achieve for us! I cried through every page after the standoff was over! Antoinette never faltered, she never lost herself in all the notoriety. She held firm to her belief. She was God's Vessel!

This is a story about how God comes through when we really need Him. Sometimes I wonder if I'd be up for challenges that others have faced but God prepares us in the moment if we are relying on Him through the simpler times. The more I trust Him the more He is preparing me for whatever I'll have to face later.
It is a wonderful story about a very strong women to stand up ...
This must have been a very difficult book to write as it tells of a time in our history, where it took a lot of courage for one person to stand up against odds there were not in her favor.
It tells of her childhood and what made her the person she is today.
It is a wonderful story about a very strong women to stand up against odds that were against her. I encourage everyone to read this book.

    Infernal Research Notes
As with the companion volume on Angelology, this "overview" is less of an overview and more just a compilation of notes, as though the narrator is reading the unorganized journal of some researcher. As scattered and haphazard as it is, there is a lot of interesting things packed inside, much of it delightfully medieval, but beginners will almost assuredly be lost from time to time.
It's a different narrator than on Angelology, and I'm not sure it's a better choice. The recording quality is definitely better, and the guy has a better voice, but he loses all credibility with pronunciation. He keeps putting the wrong emPHAsis on the wrong sylLABle, and it borders on the cartoonish at times, as though he were trying to pronounce words using a completely different alphabet. But when he does nail it, he does a decent job, considering the mess he's working with.
As with the companion book, my initial recommendation stands: people with a background on this subject or enthusiasts will be better suited for this materials than beginners, and in all cases, the print version will probably be better.
A little less than an intro class
    What disappointed you about Demonology?
It lacked cross cultural perspective. Demons are a global phenomenon, but this is more a Catholic bibliography than theological or anthropological study.
What do you think your next listen will be?
Nate Silver's signal and the noise.
What aspect of Torry Clarks performance would you have changed?
    The narrator mispronounced several words.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
    Disappointment.
    Any additional comments?
More data than information, it was akin to a freshman paper.

    Interesting, apparitions much more important
I am very interested in marion apparitions .this subject is so important. However I feel if the author only covered the approved apparitions so much more detail could have been explained. Instead of including the approved the unapproved and the still being researched. Too many apparitions Made the content too vague. Also a book is so needed on the miracles better than attributed to these apparitions . How the church approved of them and what techniques th they used to approve them. Would be so much more interesting.

    Interesting
I feel that this time the doctor put more of his own personal spin and believe structure on some of the events with in this book. Yet otherwise an interesting collection of stories and certainly worth listening to.
    Nothing New Here
Although Lerma makes a few interesting observations, this book strikes me as an attempt to cash in on interest in the hereafter.
He covers well-trod paths and offers no fresh insights. Portions of his narrative amount to little more than bragging about his wealth.
Generally boring in its rehashing of old stories like the sneaker on the hospital ledge, it frequently veers off into annoying preachiness.
Don't waste your time. You've already read it.

Title: Introduction to the Study of Religion
    Author: The Great Courses
    Narrator: Professor Charles B. Jones
    Format: Original Recording
Length: 11 hrs and 57 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-08-13
    Publisher: The Great Courses
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 60 votes
Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Religious Thought
    Publisher's Summary:
The religious experience is an extraordinarily powerful force that can define and shape the communities it creates. Over the course of 24 lectures, Professor Jones takes a vibrant first look at the discipline known as religious studies and shows how other fields - sociology, psychology, anthropology, and phenomenology - have tried to explain the complex relationship between individuals, cultures, and faith.
This relationship is as old as the first human quest for answers to fundamental questions of life, death, and what may lie beyond. Here you'll trace the idea of studying religion itself, drawing not only on the challenging and provocative collection of theories from the many disciplines that have influenced the development of religious studies, but also on revealing anecdotes and illuminating case studies that make this course a surprising delight.
You'll explore the way "functional" anthropologists such as Malinowski and A. R. Radcliffe-Brown helped pull their discipline out of the drawing room and into the field to study a given culture. You'll also study Immanuel Kant's phenomenology, his theory that we can never make actual contact with the external world but can know it only from the internal images our minds construct from the raw data pulled in by our senses.
By examining belief and what it means - for believers and nonbelievers alike - you'll come away with a solid grasp of the major thinkers and ideas that have contributed to this fascinating field of study, including their strengths and weaknesses, as well as insights into many aspects of religious life, belief, and practices - insights that may well have applications in your own life, whether or not you adhere to a religious faith.

    Good overview
Would you consider the audio edition of Introduction to the Study of Religion to be better than the print version?
    N/A
What was the most compelling aspect of this narrative?
The lecturer's thinking seems very clear. The lectures are, I thought, well organized. The structure and progression is determined on the one hand by people (e.g., a lecture on one particular thinker) and on the other by approach (e.g., all the lectures about approaching religion from the standpoint of psychology are grouped together).
Have you listened to any of Professor Charles B. Joness other performances before? How does this one compare?
    N/A
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
    N/A
    Any additional comments?
The title should make it clear that this is about the (academic) study of religion and NOT about the content or this or that religion, so anyone who wants to learn about this or that religion should look elsewhere. There is a lot about anthropology, sociology, and psychology. I only point this out because there's always a chance that someone will mistakenly think that this course includes much about the content of the various religions, though as I said the title should make it clear that that this is about Religious Studies, not theology.
    Interesting Introduction to Religious Studies
I enjoyed this multifaceted and interesting introduction to the study of religious philosophy.

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 15 hrs and 19 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 02-19-13
    Publisher: Pitchstone Publishing
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 101 votes
Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Religious Thought
    Publisher's Summary:
If God does not exist, then what does? Is there good and evil, and should we care? How do we know what's true anyway? And can we make any sense of this universe, or our own lives? Sense and Goodness Without God answers these questions in lavish detail, without complex jargon. Arguing that there is only a physical, natural world without gods or spirits, noted historian and philosopher Richard Carrier presents and defends a complete worldview, one in which we can live a life of love, meaning, and joy. In the process, he covers every relevant subject, from knowledge to art, from metaphysics to morality, from theology to politics. Specific topics include free will, the nature of the universe, the meaning of life, the science of beauty, and much more.
Although written for a lay audience, Sense and Goodness Without God tackles the sophisticated attacks on naturalism by the likes of Plantinga, Moreland, Reppert, and others, and clearly and methodically explains why the naturalistic worldview is more credible than any other.

    Alone again, Naturally
There is no refutation for the standard proofs of supernatural or magical thinking mumbo jumbo that this book doesn't address. Usually, if you watch a debate on youtube for the proof of God and the person's specific religion all the arguments follow the same six forms: design and teleological, first cause, morality, ontological, purpose of life, and proof of the resurrection. This book leaves no stone unturned and provides a scientific basis and explanation for all supernatural phenomena and the standard proofs of magical thinking. We never appeal to the supernatural anywhere else is life, why make an exception for the unknown?
The author is actually very gentle as he dismantles each argument. The book is really encyclopedic in its presentation, but he lets his arguments flow into the next such that the listener thinks he's listening to one thematically tied together story with an easy to understand narrative and not realizing the encyclopedic nature of the story. He's not really an expert on most of the topics he's discussing but he does a great job in explaining everything, but sometimes he lacks depth.
Science is hard. Religion is easy. Science must always deal with doubt and probabilities. Religion has no doubts. (Scientific) Truth is only a probability. The best we can do is have a 'corresponding theory of truth" and if our theories correspond to reality we use them, when they don't we modify or get better ones. He correctly points out the facts of evolution existed before Darwin and the Theory of Evolution is the model that goes about explaining the data better than any other model before it. Even if the model gets rejected there are still the facts of Evolution. They will always exist.
He does give the listener many interesting ways of thinking about science and religion and can convince any serious listener that the world can be explained with naturalistic means. He makes many insightful points and almost every reader will profit from reading (or listening) to this book. He defines a "hard atheist" as someone who doesn't believe in any of the currently known God(s). Thus not necessarily rejecting all supernatural explanations. I think that's a good way of framing the problem.

    Publisher: Veritas Publishing
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 35 votes
Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Religious Thought
    Publisher's Summary:
During this outstanding presentation, Dr. Hawkins explains the difference between the phrase, "Glory be to Thee" and "Glory be to me", saying it is the difference between heaven and hell. He also expands on the kinesiological response as being about the essence of something, not about what it appears to be. Additionally, he expands on the topic of surrender: what it means and how to incorporate it into ones life on a daily basis.
Dr. Hawkins presents a variety of valid spiritual practices that can lead to a higher level of consciousness, what one needs to surrender along the way, and then what one needs to be willing to accept in order to move forward on the journey toward Enlightenment. He further explains the role of karma in our lives and how it is undone, and discusses the role of "intention" and the challenges around trying to control the outcome of something rather than surrendering it to God.
Dr. Hawkins responses to questions from the audience further illustrate ways in which we can apply a spiritual approach to the daily challenges many people face in the areas of health, family issues, and life in general. During this presentation, many of his teachings are further refined, bringing the information together in a remarkably cohesive manner. This helps us to realize that Enlightenment is a real possibility, not just a fantasy.
