One of those books you just can't put down

I met the author, Brain Dobbins, at a local book store (Joseph Beth Booksellers) on a whim one Wednesday night. I bought this book and really enjoyed it. It was one of the those books I never wanted to put down, and l looked forward to getting to read more each time I picked it up. His writing style is intelligent and engaging, and the characters and story lines are well-developed. This book is largely the story of Jasmine, a 2500-year old witch who meets Sam Melody, a modern-day detective and marries him. Most of the book is spent on Jasmine's back-story, going throughout history telling tales of her life over the centuries. I look forward to future volumes filling in the (intentional) historical gaps. I finished this one and immediately bought the next.

Bizarre but believable

I finished reading "Jasmine's Tale: Darkness and Light" by Brian Dobbins last night and I thoroughly enjoyed the book. Brian's characterizations and descriptions are so vivid that I felt like I was following Jasmine and her friends through the centuries. I could "feel" her emotions and "see" her physical struggles.

The test of a book, for me, is whether or not I care about what happens to the characters. With "Jasmine's Tale," I did! Without giving away the ending, let's just say that I was satisfied things had worked out as they should.

WOW!!! this book is fantastic!!! Madison Johns is a very good writer. this book kept me intriguied from the beginning to the end. if they made a movie out of it I would go and see it. If you like romance, magic, suspense, mystry it is all there. I can't wait to read more from Madison Johns. I would and have recommend this book.

Need more Jasmine

I really enjoyed "Jasmine's Tale." It is a fun mixture of adventure, a love story and a unique twist to the world of witches, all set against an accurate historical background. I found it intriguing and entertaining. It's wonderful when a book transports us from our world and steeps us deep in its own. "Jasmine's Tale" did that for me in spades. I enjoyed meeting each of the many fascinating characters which the author has created. I worried for them as they traveled across the world, and through the ages, in their attempt to escape "the Darkness" that was seeking to control or destroy them.

Title of this book is misleading.

This book is called "pip and the zombies" but this is misleading because there is no real zombie action. If you are looking for a shorter, slightly changed version of "great expectations" then this book will work for you. If you are looking for a book about zombies, you will find it as disappointing as I did. They talk a lot about zombies and zombie slayers, but that is as far as their involvement with zombies goes. Had I known that, I would not have purchased this book.

Burnt Offerings

If you have read any of Roland Yeomans boos, you will be familiar with his character McChord, who owns the Meilori night club in the French Quarter of New Orleans, and is known to be the last Texas Ranger.

Reading Burnt Offerings gives the reader the background of this fierce creature who walks among us mere humans and helps to protect the innocent from the evil monsters surrounding them.

As you read through the book you learn McChord's history as it links to his future and that of the other characters in the novels.

Roland writes in a way which is unique to him and fills his stories with excitement, gore, suspense and detail, creating a world the reader can immerse themselves into completely.

I loved reading Burnt Offerings.

Interesting Read

I'm just getting familiar with the urban fantasy genre and find it quite interesting. For a man to admit he's a monster, Sam McCord's actions might seem confusing as he struggles to defend those preyed upon by the wolves of this world. Once a Texas Ranger, always a Texas Ranger, even if he's a tad over two hundred years old. The question is, is he an undead being or an immortal? I found the four tales to be well written but there were some problems with formatting as my Kindle displayed bad indenting and confusing justification. Fortunately, that didn't distract from the story. A good read for those into urban fantasy, but don't expect the usual vampires or zombies. This one's has a host of well-constructed monsters and demons that introduce you to a whole new world.

Urban Fantasy Like No Other

Burnt Offerings collects four tales, three of which feature the undead antihero Sam McCord, former Texas Ranger who stands in the gap between the spirit world and the humans they prey upon -- or as McCord likes to put it, between the wolves and the sheep. Heralded as the Last Knight of Jerusalem by all manner of otherworldly beings, McCord has been alive -- er, undead -- for centuries, and his power-up ability is nothing short of cool. Filled with mysticism and magic, Burnt Offerings is set firmly in our present world, haunted by ancient powers that have no problem making their presence known, and where a monster of a man may be humankind's last hope of salvation.

Breathe deeply, you might smell the cinders in these stories.

These three stories are perfect to enjoy on Halloween or during the winter.

Save yourself AND your credit!

This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

If I were a precocious 12 year old girl, I might find it interesting.

What could Lynn Lowther have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

The premise wasn't completely terrible and maybe there are contractions in the print version, but this audio version has practically no contractions which lends itself to being read in a stilted manner.

Character reactions, seem to me, to be completely unrealistic. The story is told from the perspective of a late 20's woman. As I listened, I thought that if the writer were a 12 year old girl imagining what it would be like to be that much older, it might make sense. Truly, the writing comes across as an early teenager attempting to find a voice through the use of impossible situations and inappropriate use of adjectives. An "immortal voice?" What is that? Ugh!!!

How could the performance have been better?

The editing is spotty. Several times throughout the book, the same phrases are repeated. It made an already challenging (not in a good way) listen that much more difficult to get through.

I generally tend to lay a poor performance in the lap of the director. The reader chosen for this book would be better suited to read books geared toward a much younger audience.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Wretched?

If I could play editor, I would've required the author to scrap most of what was actually written and begin again.

Any additional comments?

I wanted to like this book, but the combination of things that didn't make sense, coupled with editing and performance issues made it impossible.

What a read!

Usually I read non-fiction but the title of Karma Visited intrigued me so I read it and could not put this book down. The author has written a fascinating story of good and evil in a plausible way. My heart beat faster reading many scenes and felt relief when things brightened for a few pages. What a read! I highly recommend this wonderful story for anyone looking for something out of the ordinary and so fulfilling.

I absolutely loved this book

I absolutely loved this book. I really loved Alex and how much he cared for those he felt responsible for. Luke was another one of my favorites, he was steadfast and made sure anything that was asked of him was done in a super timely manner (can I get my own Luke?). This book was very good and I loved the lack of nonsense with Alex. He was a character that I can't wait to read about again.

a great pace, the action was intense

This book was a quick read, a great pace, the action was intense, and I really love the character of Jimmy. Alex is a protagonist that is hard to like at first, but that is part of his charm! I definitely recommend this book.

Great wrtiign and characterization

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Despite having the feeling I was thrown in the middle of a sequel instead of the first book in a series, I found myself enjoying Blood Relations more than I thought I would. Main character Alex Winters can control fire. At least, he can control it half of the time. He took over the Russian district, and tries to survive in the middle of gangsters, prostitutes, and heck, even vampires. When we meet Alex at the start of this book, heâs already the leader of the district, but he has trouble keeping control of the different pawns in the game. When he runs into a vampire gang, things start to get serious.

Alex is a complex character. Heâs an anti-hero. He was abused during his childhood, as are most of the main characters in this book. But despite all this, he put out his neck to save a bunch of children who went through the same things he did. Even though heâs barely sixteen, he acts at least ten years older, probably due to what he went through as a kid. I loved how Alex looks out for the others, even though obviously being very damaged himself.

But when the vampires turn against Mr. Lupino, one of Alexâs associates, and a man who he respects and likes, and they threaten the kids he swore to protect, Alex is willing to do whatever it takes to win this fight, without anyone else getting hurt.

The writing was great, and the characterization, especially of Alex, was spot on. Itâs been a long time since I encountered a character who I liked so much. The plot could be a bit more complex, but apart from that, I loved this.

I wanted more of everything
