Thriller with a twist

This is a great page turner. Set in Boston, it is a story about a young female cop who has to start dealing with her own dark past when there is a series of murdered young women involving the occult. I love that it is a proper thriller with a troubled heroine whose dark past involves being a powerful (albeit modern) witch. Couldn't put it down and am looking forward to the next book.

Had to listen to end......BUT

I was torn between needing to know what happened (sitting in the car at work for just a few more minutes & a few more minutes.....etc etc) and being increasingly irritated.

Tension built up nicely - semi twist at the end but not what I thought was coming -unless that is for later books - and a beautifully articulated clear and lively narration BUT, & it is a big but unfortunately, the narrator has 2 voices - 1 female and 1 painful stomachy voice for males. I started to dread longer male character speeches.

Also, wish most of the main characters were not so dim! Love interest man in particular - ouch.

Maybe it will read better than audiobook.

I could not finish this book

If this book wasnt for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?

I would not recommend it to anyone

What was most disappointing about Debbie Viguiés story?

The leading character Sam Ryan

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The narrator was fine

You didnt love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?

I could not even finish it, although I tried really hard to.

Any additional comments?

Generally I am not so put off by a protagonist that I find the novel intolerable but Sam Ryan is a Boston based police officer who is afraid of her own shadow. I get that she had traumatic experiences in the past but honestly. Her attitude is I'm too scared to do anything about this and no one else is capable so we are all doomed! Pull yourself together and just get on with it - or rethink your career choice. I was too bored to persevere.

Dark witchy thriller..

A quick review..

Dark and brooding, a witchy thriller full of murder magic and a race against time. I enjoyed it, reminded me a little of Stacia Kane in tone but not as intense... Definitely not a fluffy book, more horror than pnr.

Superb Physical & Occult Horror Tale

'NIGHT BROTHERS - A VAMPIRE NOVEL' is an exemplary horror thriller, a chilling blend of straight-up occult horror with the pacing and excitement of an action thriller. The pace accelerates smoothly and in the storyâs latter stages moves to its climax at breakneck speed. Alison and Travis have settled down to manage a small-town newspaper when mysterious and lethal animal attacks start occurring. Parallel with that we are shown Navarraâs occult practice, controlling animals to attack residents as cover for her taking their blood to continue her life-in-death. In the storyâs middle she takes an interest in Alison, and this unfolds in a superbly controlled manner redolent of such spiritual horror as Henry Jamesâ 'Turn of the Screw.'

Most impressive was the detail and backstory given for all the characters, even relatively minor ones. Itâs done with deft and swift economy, never impeding story flow. I realized as I read this how much more powerful mystery and action in any genre become when the reader is given a fuller picture of each character. Thus do character motivation, desire, regrets, preferences, fears, and all the panoply of human emotions percolate in the background as the action unfolds. That said, the story has a multiple protagonist, an ensemble of characters who work together opposing the antagonist, Navarra, and those retainers she gathers about her. Usually I prefer a single heroic protagonist, but this approach works well here.

The story exhibits a rare blend of physical horror, the psychological horror of Navarraâs selective control of minds, and the spiritual horror of her origins, especially in the lengths sheâs gone to over the centuries to maintain her line.

One of my favorite novels, I love the Navarra character.

I first read "Night Brothers" back in Highschool. I was browsing through my favorite section of the local library, the horror section. There was a panther on the cover, and I love big cats, so I decided to pick it up. As the story unfolded I became enthralled by the vampire character Navarra, and her ability to communicate and use animals to protect herself. I looked forward to each part of the story where her "Night Brothers" would come into play. I've read the book about 3 times, and I absolutely love it. Each time I'd take Navarra's side, even though I knew she was going to be defeated in the end.
