    Publisher's Summary:
Tom Cushman, one of boxing's great sportswriters, followed the "Ali generation" of fighters from New York to Las Vegas, Nassau to Zaire, reporting for the Philadelphia Daily News from 1966 to 1982 and for the San Diego Tribune, 1982 to 1992. Muhammad Ali and the Greatest Heavyweight Generation chronicles the behind-the-scenes stories of the great athletes in boxing's biggest-and-best age, their victories and struggles, crimes and passions, heydays and swan songs.
This collection of essays, gleaned from Cushman's personal files as well as his recent research, brings to light the backgrounds of the fighters in and out of the ring: Liston's tragic death, Foreman's rise from hell to heaven, Holmes' crushing defeat and his great heart, Everett's murder, and everywhere, always, the unforgettable voice and charismatic volume of the astounding Muhammad Ali.
Columnist Bill Conlin, Philadelphia Daily News, writes in the book's preface:
"This [is] history of the rarest sort the view of a man who not only had lived in the time and recorded the events, but now, a quarter of a century later, who was able to interpret both the athletic imprint left by these dynamic men and the sociological impact of their triumphs and tragedies."
The book is published by Southeast Missouri State University Press.

Highlighting legends such as Mary Astor, John Wayne, Alfred Hitchcock, Spencer Tracy, Lana Turner, Gary Cooper, Patricia Neal, Betty Hutton, and Bob Hope, Oasis: Conversion Stories of Hollywood Legends uncovers stories of recovery and conversion - intimate portraits that often contrast with the more common profiles of these all-too-human stars. Many were touched by infidelity, alcoholism, unbridled ambition, or other moral failings that often seem to characterize life in Hollywood. Some had deathbed conversions, others underwent a gradual process of conversion; each found solace in embracing the Catholic faith.
While taking nothing from their fame, Oasis: Conversion Stories of Hollywood Legends shows that even those who seem to have it all need the hope, strength, and fortitude provided by faith.

"My life has been a series of emergencies." (Lana Turner)
A lot of ink has been spilled covering the lives of history's most influential figures, but how much of the forest is lost for the trees? In Charles River Editors' American Legends series, listeners can get caught up to speed on the lives of America's most important men and women in the time it takes to finish a commute, while learning interesting facts long forgotten or never known.
During the golden era of Hollywood, few actresses proved as versatile as Lana Turner, who got her start playing the wholesome, innocent young beauty as a teenager before shifting to femme fatale roles and starring in horror classics like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Lana was discovered as a result of her beauty; Louis B. Mayer immediately saw her as a potential replacement for Jean Harlow, and Turner's earliest roles played off her sexiness, with an influence that reached all the way to Argentina, where Eva Peron sought to emulate her style. At the same time, however, Turner felt disrespected by the focus on her looks and desperately wanted to show she could be a critically acclaimed actress. That eventually occurred when she was nominated for an Oscar for best actress in Peyton Place (1957), and Turner would go on to have an acting career that spanned nearly 55 years, with her final appearance coming only a few years before her death.
Throughout her life Turner sought critical acclaim to prove that she was more than a pretty face, yet she is perhaps most famous now for living the kind of life that kept gossip rags and rumor mills in business.

Accurate bio if you want to know more about the "sweater girl"
I knew a lot about Lana Turner before reading this and found it to be accurate with some new to me details. The writing is not great but it's a fast read.
    A disappointment.
I have read a few other books about Lana Turner, including her autobiography. A lot of this book does sparsely follow the "facts", so by the time I was down to the last few minutes in the book, I kept thinking, " What about Ty Power?" According to Lana's autobiography, and the other biographies I'd read, Tyrone Power was the true love of her life, even though they weren't fated to marry and "live happily ever after." This account of Lana Turner's life was very, very disappointing and left me with a lot of unanswered questions. I don't think I could recommend this book to anyone.
    Waste of money
More of an essay than a biography. More of a high school book report than a book. I can't imagine anyone being satisfied with this simple work. It is a few short chapters that review just a tiny portion of the life of Lana Turner. Each chapter being but a page or two. It just doesn't do any justice to a life lived to the extent that this American Legend lived her life.
    one troubled life
American Legends: The Life of Lana Turner by Charles River Editors is a book about being discovered as a teen and the misery as an adult. So much happens in this life, this book would be so fat if it went into detail.

Since the early 20th century, film has been embraced as arguably the preeminent international art form. Not only is Hollywood cinema immensely popular around the world, but other nationalities (Bollywood being the greatest current example) have their own thriving industries. Major actors and actresses are not only icons in their parent countries but reach tremendous international fame.
However, most actors who become internationally famous do so via the success of the films they make in their native lands, without actually leaving their countries. One of the most famous early examples is Charlie Chaplin, who reached incredible fame in Asia and Western Europe during the silent cinema era, despite having never left the confines of Hollywood.
Chaplin's example illustrates how the vast majority of film stars who reach international fame do so through the global success of the films they make within a given industry. This dynamic highlights the uniqueness of Ingrid Bergman's career and her significance as an international film star. Not only were films like Casablanca (1942) famous around the world, but she made films in five different languages and film industries.

"I was born at the age of 12 on a Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer lot." - Judy Garland
A lot of ink has been spilled covering the lives of history's most influential figures, but how much of the forest is lost for the trees? In Charles River Editors' American Legends series, listeners can get caught up to speed on the lives of America's most important men and women in the time it takes to finish a commute, while learning interesting facts long forgotten or never known.
In many ways, Judy Garland's rise to fame seems almost predestined. Not only was she a national sensation at a young age, but her parents and sisters were all vaudeville entertainers. On top of that, Garland's parents owned and operated a movie theater, making it all the easier to draw the conclusion that singing and acting were simply professions which she was born into by virtue of her pedigree. Judy's early childhood quickly demonstrated that she had a gifted voice that developed well beyond its years and seemingly did not require any formal training in order to achieve success; her first performance before a public audience came when she was still a toddler, and she would continue to act up until her death, never pausing for more than a few months at a time.
That Garland was able to secure starring roles almost immediately after signing a contract with MGM in 1935 only corroborates the belief that Garland was practically born with the ability to succeed in show business and the motion picture industry.
    Members Reviews:
Where did they find this amateur reader?
The content of the book is fine, but the reader is terrible! She doesn't know how to pronounce ordinary words (pronounces Santa Barbara "Bar-BEAR-uh... really?), makes mistakes that aren't corrected or edited, and her tone changes at points where they've clearly spliced sessions. These poor production values make it impossible to stay with the story and I had to turn it off.
    Just OK
I was alright. whoever was the narrirator was awful. I wanted to like it but the constant mispronounced words ruined it.
    Not what you would expect.
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Such an interesting, biography. If you think fame and money, would resolve all of your problems, admit it, most of us do. Think again, what a tough life, Judy lived. Personally, it made me appreciate, what a good life I have.
What did you like best about this story?
It showed that no matter, who you are, you reap what you sow. We all have to pay for bad decisions, no matter who we are. The truth is, all gifted geniuses, need lots of love and support. Many people don't realize, this. Let's give more love and support to our stars, to try and prevent these suicides. The reading was dramatic and well done, kept your interest.
Have you listened to any of Patricia Hoeksemas other performances before? How does this one compare?
This was the first, but I will be looking for more.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
We need our childhood, even if we are gifted.
    Any additional comments?
    Soothing and entertaining voice over.
    Not what you would expect.

"People say I've gone against Hollywood, but I've tried to be independent within Hollywood, tried to be my own person." (Robert Redford)
A lot of ink has been spilled covering the lives of history's most influential figures, but how much of the forest is lost for the trees? In Charles River Editors' American Legends series, listeners can get caught up on the lives of America's most important men and women in the time it takes to finish a commute, while learning interesting facts long forgotten or never known.
When Robert Redford first entered the national spotlight in the early 1960s, he was hardly viewed as a serious actor, and with his red hair, blond complexion, and athletic build, he was seen more as a handsome man than a skilled one. On top of that, he came at a time in which most Hollywood stars were tall, dark, and slender - like one of his most famous costars, Paul Newman - and by comparison, Redford looked more like a surfer. It was an unfortunate stereotype because he had already studied acting and performed on Broadway even as people initially had great difficulty in taking him seriously. The acting roles for which he first became famous, such as Barefoot in the Park, featured him in what Elisa Leonelli has referred to as "golden boy" roles, and this was something that would take years to overcome, but it also gave him a chip on his shoulder. As he later noted half in jest, "I think a lot of people thought my career started with Butch Cassidy."

And when life seemed unbearable, I learned to live in my imagination, and to step inside other people's skins - indispensable abilities for an actress." (Lucille Ball)
Lucille Ball, one of the most famous and versatile stars in American history, is above all defined by her charisma. She did not possess the overwhelming beauty of her contemporaries in the entertainment industry, yet her infectious enthusiasm continues to endear her to the American public even decades following her death. Indeed, at the time that I Love Lucy (1951-1957) ended, the show still remained the most-watched show in America. Ball possessed an intangible quality that captivated audiences, who were transfixed by even the most banal plot sequences in her sitcoms. That Ball was able to withhold her popularity even after the ending of I Love Lucy testifies to the fact that she was always the star attraction on the famous sitcom. Indeed, even after separating from Arnaz, Ball continued to achieve high ratings on her subsequent programs, most notably The Lucy Show (1962-1968) and Here's Lucy (1968-1974).

    Strange Writing Style
This book is hard to read, mainly because of a very strange writing style. The author attempts to use higher level vocabulary that just doesn't fit in a short biography like this and uses some words repetitively to the point that it becomes annoying. ("Relatively" is a repeated word I noticed right off.)
The content isn't bad, and the photos are nice.
    Fantastic
I have always wanted to know the personal and professional life of Luci
lle Ball. This was a very down to earth, look into who she was before she became famous and after. Thank you for naming all of her husbands. I knew about Desi Arnaz, and Gary Morton. The others, if any, them I didn't know about.
    Bland
The book was not well edited. There were many grammatical errors. The story was something I would expect to see on the TV show "Biography." It was lacking in detail. It didn't even mention the death of Desi Arnaz. Not as in-depth as I had hoped.
    Five Stars
    good book
    I Always Will Love Lucy
Lucille Ball gave us the ability to look at ourselves and seek humor in our daily life. She was a magnet who was able to draw people to her, which is evident by the number of generations who watched her in the 50s and through reruns, watch her today.
