Get re-inspired by Michael Jordan all over again!
Nowadays, when it comes to basketball the name on everybodyâs lips is Lebron James. However, when I was growing up, if there was one athlete my friends and I looked up to with complete and utter awe, it was Michael Jordan. He represented what could be accomplished when you fully immersed yourself into becoming the best that you could be. Having said this, reading âMichael Jordan: The Inspiring Story of One of Basketball's Greatest Playersâ gave me a much deeper insight than I had ever known about the man who inspired us to follow aspirations.
An avid reader, I love books, but usually tend to stay far away from biographies because they often come off stuffy and read like a list of facts with no genuine flow. Geoffreyâs unauthorized biography of Michael Jordan, however, is written in a way that makes you want to (digitally) turn the next page, just to find out more about a man who was and continues to be one of the most amazing athletes to enter the arena of sports. You feel like you are sitting with a friend who sat on the sidelines catching all of Michaelâs moments, great or small, listening to him as he recounts every one of them hooking you in every step of the way. Definitely a great book to check out if you want to know more about the man who made the #23 the thing of legends.
How Michael Jordan became a success
I am from the generation that remembers the time in basketball history that Michael Jordan was king. This inspiring story reminds us about what Michael Jordan was able to do in basketball that made him great. If his statistics are not impressive enough, his impact to our culture is evident with the sale of his shoes and many endorsements. His jumpman pose is on his apparel, shoes, and even outside the United Center in Chicago, home of the Bulls. As the book points out, he was not a naturally gifted basketball player as a child. He was disciplined enough to improve on his skills until he was accepted by his school teams. That focus and determination can be from the discipline he got from his parents who kept him in line. This book details his passion for sports (and not just basketball) and the discipline he demonstrates to be the best he can be at his game.

Title: The Earp Brothers: Wyatt, Virgil and Morgan Earp

    Publisher: Charles River Editors
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 30 votes
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
Of all the colorful characters that inhabited the West during the 19th century, the most famous of them all is Wyatt Earp (1848-1929), who has long been regarded as the embodiment of the Wild West. Considered the "toughest and deadliest gunman of his day", Earp symbolized the swagger, the heroism, and even the lawlessness of the West. He was notorious for being a law enforcer, gambler, saloon keeper, and vigilante. The Western icon is best known for being a sheriff in Tombstone, but before that he had been arrested and jailed several times himself, in one case escaping from prison. And he was not above gambling and spending time in "houses of ill-fame".
Though they have long been overshadowed by their more famous brother Wyatt, Virgil and Morgan Earp played decisive roles in some of the most famous events in the history of the Old West. Most notably, the two brothers were at Wyatt's side for America's most famous gunfight: the gunfight at the O. K. Corral. Though the gunfight lasted less than a minute, it is still widely remembered as the climactic event of the period, representing lawlessness and justice, vendettas, and a uniquely Western moral code. Fought in the middle of Tombstone, Arizona, the gunfight pitted the three Earp brothers and Doc Holliday against Billy Clanton, Tom McLaury and Frank McLaury. By the time the 30-second gunfight was over, the McLaury brothers were dead in the street; Billy Clanton had suffered a painful and fatal gunshot wound to the chest; and Holliday, Virgil, and Morgan Earp were all wounded.

So much more than the gunfight at OK Corral
Many folks know the Earp brothers from the gunfight at the OK Corral in Tombstone, AZ. Wyatt Earp in particular is seen as an icon of the Wild West. However, this book gives you so much more than that. Each of the Earp brothers was a flawed human, leading interesting lives. Theres law breaking, brothels, drug use, affairs and multiple wives, gambling, and the rough & tough enforcement of the law.
Charles River Editors has put together yet another fascinating read. I knew very little about the Earp brothers before diving into this book and now feel that I can hold a decent conversation about them. This book starts off with their family back east and shows how the brothers grew up, went separate ways, and then ended up together again in AZ. The story doesnt stop there and the book continues the tale of each brother, following them until each one passes out of history.
The Earps flaws and sometimes outright lawlessness isnt sugar coated or glossed over in this book. Indeed, we get to know the factual story for each man, including all their documented indiscretions. I especially like that when the facts become a bit muddied the book is honest about questionable or conflicting historical sources.
My only criticism is that sometimes I would lose track of which brother the story was focused on at any one time. Often, the book would start a section or perhaps a paragraph with the full name (i.e. Wyatt Earp) but then just refer to the man as Earp the rest of the section. So if you missed the full name, you could easily think the story was still focused on whichever brother before. I wish the book had stuck with first names when referring to the Earp brothers for much of the book instead of going with Earp, Earp, and Earp for like 80% of the book.

Title: American Legends: The Life of Ginger Rogers

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 1 hr and 7 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-05-15
    Publisher: Charles River Editors
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
There is no denying that the career of Ginger Rogers cannot be entirely divorced from that of Fred Astaire. The unlikely pairing - Rogers was a statuesque blonde while Astaire fell well short of the masculine ideal expected of male movie stars - only made their screen romance more dreamlike, even as the physical contrasts between them melted away during their protracted dance numbers. Not only were Astaire and Rogers the preeminent box office attraction of the time period, but they remain the most recognizable faces of the musical genre as a whole. It is telling that, as Edward Gallafent notes, the duo are identified simply as Fred and Ginger, with no need to even provide their last names. Moreover, not only are films such as Top Hat (1935) and Shall We Dance (1937) cornerstones of the musical, but one of the great achievements of the Fred and Ginger team is that they never fell out of public favor. Indeed, the completeness of the Fred and Ginger pairing was punctuated by the fact that there was no bitter breakup between them, making it so that audiences are left only with the seamless screen romances between them.
Considering the immense success of their films together, it is entirely understandable that Astaire and Rogers are joined at the hip in the eyes of the public. However, an appreciation for the Fred and Ginger musicals is only enhanced by knowledge of the personal backgrounds of the two stars. After all, the fact remains that Astaire and Rogers came from vastly different cultural backgrounds, and at the time that they met, their careers had unfolded in dissimilar ways. Astaire was a national celebrity for his skills as a stage performer (mainly with his sister Adele), while Rogers was raised in a more archetypal Midwestern setting and her professional success was reached entirely through cinema. While Astaire made a name for himself through his dancing, Rogers was more recognized for her singing talents. Clearly, it is still possible to discern fundamental differences between their professional talents, contrasts that would become more distinguishable once they ceased making films together.
American Legends: The Life of Ginger Rogers profiles the life and career of one of America's most famous entertainers.

American Legends: The Life of Ginger Rogers
This was an interesting book, but short. I would have liked to have read a more in depth version of her life. She was quite a wonderful actress and dancer.
    Not fabulous.
It had some interesting information but I expected more than what you actually get. I don't remember reading anything super significant.
    low rating
beyound the usual facts, he didn't check the movie details. It was slow and I've read better. I was disappointed.
Dancing with love in her heart.
Ginger loved to soften the perils and frustrations of her audience, while at the same time having a handsome man to perform with.

I've always said, 'No matter what happens, if I get pushed down, I'm going to come right back up.'" - Doris Day
A lot of ink has been spilled covering the lives of history's most influential figures, but how much of the forest is lost for the trees? In Charles River Editors' American Legends series, listeners can get caught up to speed on the lives of America's most important men and women in the time it takes to finish a commute, while learning interesting facts long forgotten or never known.
It goes without saying that few people have a career spanning eight decades, yet that claim to fame is occupied by the legendary Doris Day, who got her start in show business as a singer in a big band in 1939 and has not let up since. From there, Day went on to record dozens of albums and hundreds of songs, winning a countless number of awards on the way to being one of the 20th century's most popular singers. One of those recognitions came just a few years ago in 2011, when Day, by that time nearing 90 years old, released a new album that charted ninth in the UK Top 40 Albums, making her the oldest singer ever with that distinction.
Her musical career would've been impressive enough, but Doris Day is just as well known today for her film career, which wasn't so bad itself. Though her time in Hollywood was much shorter in comparison to her music career, she nevertheless managed to reach the top in that industry as well.
    Members Reviews:
    There's gotta be better
The narration is not good. It's rushed and lacks the proper emotion. To be more specific, the narrator reads the entire time as if with a smile on her face, even during the darkest periods of Doris's early life. Sounds rushed and ill performed. Couldn't get though a single chapter.

    Publisher's Summary:
A witty, warm, and inspiring memoir from E News! host, Fashion Police panelist, red-carpet correspondent, author, and reality show star Giuliana Rancic.
Giuliana Rancic is best known for interviewing A-listers on the red carpet and E! News, skewering their shocking style choices on Fashion Police, and giving viewers a front-row seat to her marriage and family life on her reality show, Giuliana & Bill. What fans may not know is that she learned English from Eddie Murphy, got her American citizenship so she could be a beauty queen, and used to have a bad habit of stealing cars for fun.
Giuliana bares this and so much more in her hilarious, warm, and inspiring memoir, Going off Script. From a young age she dreamed of being a TV anchorwoman, but because of her inclination toward mischief and away from schoolwork, her path to her dream job was far from straight. After a fateful (and mortifying) encounter with the late Senator Ted Kennedy, she learned that Hollywood news was where she belonged. Thankfully for listeners, this epiphany led her to a bounty of LA misadventures (featuring notables such as Johnny Depp, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Russell Crowe) and an entertaining behind-the-scenes perspective on what our favorite celebrities are really like.
In spite of her glamorous Hollywood life, however, Giuliana could not escape some rockier times, including her battles with infertility and breast cancer. Here, for the first time, she reveals the whole truth behind her well-publicized struggles and the highly controversial decisions she had to make. And, of course, at the heart of it all are the two loves of her life who keep her strong through everything: her husband, Bill, and her son, Duke.
Candid, funny, and poignant, Going off Script is an autobiography that proves you don't always have to follow the rules to get the life you've always dreamed of.

    Love G
Would you listen to Going off Script again? Why?
Probably, G was real. She is one fouled mouth lady, but I love it. If you do not like swearing this is not the book for you. I was hoping she'd have more Hollywood dirt, but the over all story was good.
What other book might you compare Going off Script to and why?
No sure, maybe Jennie Garth's autobiography.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
She was very newsreporter for this book. Loved her "just go with it" attitude of the book, but a little more emotion or depth would have been nice to hear. I felt she just read through it.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes, I love G and Bill and have followed them throughout the years. I would for sure recommend this book to another fan, but if you are not a fan than you probably wont enjoy the book.
    Any additional comments?
I just love how "real" she is. She is CRAZY, but I love that about her. Not afraid to show her true self!
    who would've known?
I was glad the author narrated the book.
I was surprised by her feisty personality -and
    teenage antics.

    Publisher's Summary:
The autobiography of the highest scoring batsman of all time.
The greatest run-scorer in the history of cricket, Sachin Tendulkar retired in 2013 after an astonishing 24 years at the top. The most celebrated Indian cricketer of all time, he received the Bharat Ratna Award - India's highest civilian honour - on the day of his retirement.
Now Sachin Tendulkar tells his own remarkable story - from his first Test cap at the age of 16 to his 100th international century and the emotional final farewell that brought his country to a standstill.
When a boisterous Mumbai youngster's excess energies were channelled into cricket, the result was record-breaking schoolboy batting exploits that launched the career of a cricketing phenomenon. Before long Sachin Tendulkar was the cornerstone of India's batting line-up, his every move watched by a cricket-mad nation's devoted followers.Never has a cricketer been burdened with so many expectations; never has a cricketer performed at such a high level for so long and with such style - scoring more runs and making more centuries than any other player, in both Tests and one-day games. And perhaps only one cricketer could have brought together a shocked nation by defiantly scoring a Test century shortly after terrorist attacks rocked Mumbai.
His many achievements with India include winning the World Cup and topping the world Test rankings. Yet he has also known his fair share of frustration and failure - from injuries and early World Cup exits to stinging criticism from the press, especially during his unhappy tenure as captain.Despite his celebrity status, Sachin Tendulkar has always remained a very private man, devoted to his family and his country. Now, for the first time, he provides a fascinating insight into his personal life and gives a frank and revealing account of a sporting life like no other.

The narrator couldn't speak regular Indian words
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
It was time well spent because I am a big fan of Sachin Tendulkar. But the overall audiobook is disappointing. The narrator couldn't speak regular Indian words which is a big turn off. Plus the book is very linear. The story of Sachin is well known, and I was expecting the book to be more than about just his cricket.
How could the performance have been better?
The performance could have been way better if the narrator had the sense of reading out all Indian words properly. And there are a lot of Indian words obviously.
    Inspiring

"Anywhere I see suffering, that is where I want to be, doing what I can." Diana
A lot of ink has been spilled covering the lives of history's most influential figures, but how much of the forest is lost for the trees? In Charles River Editors' British Legends series, listeners can get caught up to speed on the lives of Great Britain's most important men and women in the time it takes to finish a commute, while learning interesting facts long forgotten or never known.
Born in 1961, the woman who would become Princess of Wales and one of the most famous people in the world was literally nameless for a week. Expecting a boy, the parents finally came to grips with the fact that she was a girl and eventually named her Diana. Fittingly, even though Diana had been born into one of Britain's most historic and prominent families, the world came to know her better for her first name than her last name, Spencer.
Diana's first brush with Prince Charles came when the prince was dating her older sister, but the world met Lady Diana after Charles began courting her from 1980-81. The two were married in the most famous and watched wedding of the 20th century, with nearly 750,000 tuning and over half a million standing outside to see the Royal Wedding. From then on, Diana became one of the most famous people in the world, with every step she took and every decision she made heavily scrutinized across the world. Though she stayed busy with international charities, human rights work, being a mother, and all of the necessities being part of the Royal Family required, Diana remained a tabloid fixture all the while.
Thanks to her fame, the life and tragic death of "Princess Di" are known the world over, and despite all of the controversies that swirled around her during her final years - she was considered a saint by some and a traitor to the established order by others - Diana nevertheless remains one of the most famous and popular Britons in history.

    Publisher's Summary:
The explosive autobiography from the brilliant and controversial footballer Luis Suarez.
Luis Suárez was a young boy already in love with football by the time his family moved from the countryside to Uruguay's capital, Montevideo. The guile and trickery of the street kid made an impact with the country's biggest club, Nacional, before he was spotted by Dutch scouts who brought him to Europe. Suárez was lured from Ajax to Merseyside by another iconic number 7, Kenny Dalglish. From that moment, he terrorised Premier League defences, driving a resurgent Liverpool towards their most exciting top-flight season in 24 years.
But there is another side to Luis Suárez: the naturally fiery temperament which drives his competitiveness on the pitch. There was the very public incident with Patrice Evra of bitter rivals Manchester United, and the biting of Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic. Then during the World Cup finals in Brazil, in a physical encounter against Italy, he bit defender Giorgi Chiellini on the shoulder. Banned from football for four months, derided by the press, he was marched out of the country. In the summer's final twist, he became one of the most expensive footballers of all time, moving from Liverpool to Barcelona.
In Crossing the Line, Luis Suárez talks from the heart about his intriguing career, his personal journey from scrapping street kid to performer on football's biggest stage, and the never-say-die attitude that sometimes causes him to overstep the mark.

    Open and honest
Totally enjoyed it altogether a very honest account of a football mad genius life. Luis Suarez will never walk alone.
Good read, interesting insight into the man
If you could sum up Luis Suarez: Crossing the Line - My Story in three words, what would they be?
Honest, open, yet very respectful account of his journey from a young footballer to joining Barcelona. I enjoyed listening to the story. Only downside for me was that the narrator sounds like Ian McKellan and have a heavy, English accent. Strange choice of narrator for a South American man. I would have preferred a native South American person narrating in English.
very good story of this man's life. with his rise
very good story of this man's life. with his rise to fame and the lows
    Stick to football Luis
What did you like best about Luis Suarez: Crossing the Line - My Story? What did you like least?
Not too bad, but certainately not a great read. Briefly talks about his upbringing but talks more about his football controversy.
What three words best describe Jonathan Keebles voice?
    Passion thoughtful intelligent
If this book were a film would you go see it?
    No
Never judge a book by its cover.
Good book for any Liverpool fan or just a fan of football. And the people behind the man and what makes him tick.

A brief yet definitive new biography of one of film's greatest legends, perfect for listeners who want to know more about the iconic star but who don't want to commit to a lengthy work.
He was the very first icon of the silver screen and is one of the most recognizable of Hollywood faces, even 100 years after his first film. But what of the man behind the moustache? Peter Ackroyd's biography turns the spotlight on Chaplin's life as well as his work, from his humble theatrical beginnings in music halls to winning an honorary Academy Award. Everything is here, from the glamor of his golden age to the murky scandals of the 1940s and eventual exile to Switzerland. There are charming anecdotes along the way: playing the violin in a New York hotel room to mask the sound of Stan Laurel frying pork chops and long Hollywood lunches with Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. This masterful, brief biography offers fresh revelations about one of the most familiar faces of the last century and brings the Little Tramp vividly to life.

This Long Time Chaplin Fan Wanted More
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
No. While the title says a brief life, Chaplin's life was anything but brief & his contribution to cinematic art is overwhelming.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Charlie & Sid - because they made cinema history together. I also like that the problems with Charlie's two eldest sons weren't glossed over.
What do you think the narrator could have done better?
He didn't sound like he "LOVED" the topic of Chaplin.
Did Charlie Chaplin inspire you to do anything?
Yes. Over the last 16 years I've taken my son to every local showing of Chaplin's films. And you know what? Now he asks me. We love Chaplin!!!

    Publisher's Summary:
Russell Brand wants YOU to join the revolution.
We all know the system isn't working. Our governments are corrupt and the opposing parties pointlessly similar. Our culture is filled with vacuity and pap, and we are told there's nothing we can do - "it's just the way things are".
In this book, Russell Brand hilariously lacerates the straw men and paper tigers of our conformist times and presents, with the help of experts as diverse as Thomas Piketty and George Orwell, a vision for a fairer, sexier society that's fun and inclusive.
You have been lied to, told there's no alternative, no choice and that you don't deserve any better. Brand destroys this illusory facade as amusingly and deftly as he annihilates Morning Joe anchors, Fox News fascists and BBC stalwarts.
This book makes revolution not only possible, but inevitable and fun.

    Life changing
This is not a book to just read (listen to) it must be absorbed and re absorbed and then integrated into life. A must! Oh and it's bloody funny (in parts)
    Utterly inspiring
Can't see the world in the same way after reading this. Stirred up a dormant desire to see a better world and points to where that can start. I've avoided books like this for fear that once the inner working of democracy are revealed I'll feel helpless. But after reading this I feel quite the opposite.
Russel's name is the only selling point
What would have made Revolution better?
The tone of the whole book seemed condescending yet simple at the same time. I'm a fan of Russel Brand and the new direction his career is taking (the Trews is my breakfast watching) and I agree with a number of his viewpoints. However this book to me felt like an overly long, rambling edition of the trews that lacked his normal energy and humor. Overall I felt it was worse written than an average episode of the Trews. The tone of the whole book felt more like a high school child's first attempt at political/philosophical writing.
Has Revolution turned you off from other books in this genre?
No. I think that this book was not the best example of Russel's work. Rather than listen to this, watch all of the Trews back to back. To be honest my opinion on this book may have been higher had I not known Russel's potential. It felt like a first attempt and I'm definitely looking forward to his second
    Which scene was your favorite?
It was a rambling philosophical brick wall spiced with the occasional anecdote. Nothing was really memorable aside from the time I accidentally sped up the playback (and decided it was an improvement)
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Revolution?
The entire premise of the book needs a re-working which I hope he is doing. Nothing at all stood out in this book. It was just Russel rambling about leftist politics for almost 10 hours. All of it would be equally worthy of removal.
    Any additional comments?
If you have a vendetta against youtube and refuse to watch Russel's show "The Trews" yet you are still intrigued by his politics then this is for you. However it really seemed to me that a lot of this book was written before Russel learned how to arrange an argument and talk about politics from his youtube channel. My opinion may have been different were I not a long time watcher of the Trews as he does espouse some refreshing ideas.
