    Title: Chess Not Checkers
    Subtitle: Elevate Your Leadership Game
    Author: Mark Miller
    Narrator: Joe Bronzi
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 2 hrs and 22 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-06-15
    Publisher: Berrett-Koehler Publishers
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 176 votes
    Genres: Business, Leadership
    Publisher's Summary:
In his latest business fable, top leadership author Mark Miller tells the story of newly appointed CEO Blake Brown, who takes over a company distressed by poor performance and low morale. Nothing Blake learned from his previous job seems to help him deal with the bigger, more complex problems he now faces. The game has changed. As his new mentor points out, Blake is playing a simple game of checkers when he should be playing chess. Miller uses this metaphor to show how leaders can encourage deep, strategic thinking throughout an organization and utilize the unique abilities of each employee (bishops move differently than knights). He explains how to apply the "chess not checkers" mentality in four critical areas: leadership development, employee engagement, organizational alignment, and execution. This is an appealing, accessible guide to helping all leaders think ahead, plan their moves, and avoid getting checkmated by circumstances or competitors.

Chess Not Checkers can be an interesting metaphor for business strategy.
Chess Not Checkers is an interesting metaphor for business strategy. It's true and it's essential. This book does a good job of telling a parable of the potential for more involved thinking.
As a business strategy book, the story is quite simplistic and unrealistic - like a fairy tale - so I wouldn't recommend it to experienced business readers who will likely already understand this.
While not a bad book, it frustrated me because real life is not so simple. People fear and resist change - even when it is in their better interest. People make mistakes and and have a difficult time learning advanced strategies. Many are not even capable of the complex and proactive thinking required of an advanced strategy like chess.
I found the narration too slow and listened to this at 2x speed.
    Nothing new
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Yes because the novelty of a story vs. a list of concepts was nice.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
With the company being vague - pointed out at the beginning - made it tough to figure out how they actually did for the four steps. It would have been nice to have more detail on how the team accomplished each step instead of them hearing the step and being told to go do it.
    Great Book
Loved this book as it done an amazing job with great takeaways for Leadership Development
    A Great Piece Of Work!
I found this very easy to follow and implement looking forward to the additional resources!!
    Excellent book for any leader!
The concepts discussed in this short story are fantastic! Easy to understand and start applying in your business right away. Highly recommended.

  • Yes, And Audiobook by Kelly Leonard, Tom Yorton

    Title: Yes, And
Subtitle: How Improvisation Reverses "No, but" Thinking and Improves Creativity and Collaboration - Lessons from the Second City
    Author: Kelly Leonard, Tom Yorton
    Narrator: Alan Winter
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 18 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-24-15
    Publisher: HarperAudio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 147 votes
    Genres: Business, Leadership
    Publisher's Summary:
The Second City has launched the careers of celebrated comic performers such as Tina Fey and Stephen Colbert and produced award-winning content. But it's the actual improvisational process developed and honed over the years by The Second City that has become its legacy. Players master an ability to cocreate in ensembles using philosophies that celebrate a "yes, and" approach. They embrace authenticity and failure and espouse the idea of "following the follower", which allows any member of the team to assume a leadership role.
For more than two decades, The Second City has taken these same principles to thousands of corporate clients, showing leaders how to apply the tools of improv to common business challenges. Here, for the first time, Second City executives Kelly Leonard and Tom Yorton describe how you can use the same skills that thrill audiences around the world to improve your emotional intelligence, increase creativity, and learn to pivot out of tight and uncomfortable situations. In this engaging, often humorous, and highly practical audiobook, you will learn how to become a more compelling leader and a more collaborative follower by employing the seven elements of improv:
    Critic Reviews:
"Narrating a most engaging lesson on being productive and influencing others at work, Alan Winter communicates a natural enthusiasm that makes you like him right away and trust his understanding of the authors' message. His vocal personality, pacing, and articulation draw listeners in and make them want to stay connected." (AudioFile)
    Members Reviews:
The title is the best part
Would you try another book from Kelly Leonard and Tom Yorton and/or Alan Winter?
No. It never seems to get to any points advertised. Very disorganized presentation.
What three words best describe Alan Winters performance?
    Very good
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Disappointment. I wanted something useful. I'm not going to hire Second City to come to my meeting and make a point using sketch comedy.
    Any additional comments?
I thought the book would would focus on "showing leaders how to apply the tools of improv to common business challenges", as described. Instead, this was a rambling pile of name-dropping. The book meanders through business-type situations (without getting to the meat of what was done) and quickly returns to theatre performances - even describing the number of people in the audience, and whether they were grumpy.
    Disappointing
    Any additional comments?
This book was one of the biggest disappointments I've had in an Audible book this year. It could have been partly that my expectations were too high.
As others have said, the title is as much as you will learn about improvisation. There is very little about the practical application of the "yes, and" philosophy.
This book is basically a really long brochure for Second City.
If any writers want to satisfy some readers, they could write a book describing how to use the "yes, and" philosophy for improvement on and off the stage.
The Title is all you learn from the book
I bought this book to learn about improvisation. All I got from it was that Second City has a department that works with businesses to teach improvisation skills.

    Publisher's Summary:
Whether you're an entrepreneur, an intrapreneur, or a not-for-profit leader, there's no shortage of advice on such topics as writing a business plan, recruiting, raising capital, and branding. In fact there are so many books, articles, and websites that many startups get bogged down to the point of paralysis, or they focus on the wrong priorities and go broke before they discover their mistakes.
The Art of the Start 2.0 solves that problem by distilling Guy Kawasaki's decades of experience as one of the most original and irreverent strategists in the business world. Since late 2004 The Art of the Start has been the essential guide for anyone starting anything, from a multinational corporation to a church group. From raising money to hiring the right people, from defining your positioning to creating a brand, from driving buzz to buzzing the competition, this audiobook will guide you through an adventure that's more art than science: the art of the start.

Like a collection of about.com articles
This book is one inch deep and a mile wide. A new tip every ten seconds, it is like a collection of lame internet articles. I'm not saying the advice is bad, I just dont find these kind of tips very helpful. It is the opposite of a book like The Lean Startup by Eric Ries, which takes a profound idea and explores it in depth.
It's ok, nothing groundbreaking. Poor narration
The narration was distracting. Also it seems like they blended 2 narrations. The tone / voice in the 2nd half sounds different. Same guy but different sound. Many of the phrases just sounded so cheesy with this reader. The content was ok. I've heard lots of entrepreneur audiobooks and this was more of the same.
Real deal from 1 of the fathers of Silicon Valley
Guy tells it like it is to founders of any organization. With humor, blunt honesty, and example after example, he covers the practical business of starting. From font size in a pitch presentation to tips for a launch event to company culture to sales--he gives you the good, the bad, and the ugly. Great read.
    Overall worth it
Good info - had helpful insights - especially for tech startup .
Performance of narrator not my favorite but not as bad as others said.
    Great primer for any entrepreneur
Full of real-world examples and actionable trip, this is a great book for any entrepreneur - or someone considering becoming one.

    Publisher's Summary:
Few would argue with the fact that on many fronts, we are a world in crisis. And there are two sides to every crisis, be it a leadership crisis, an economic crisis, an education crisis, or a moral crisis. The two sides to crisis are danger and opportunity.
Robert Kiyosaki's new book, Second Chance: for Your Money and Your Life, uses the lessons from the past and a brutal assessment of the present to prepare readers to see - and seize - the future.
If readers can train their minds to see what their eyes cannot in a world that is becoming increasingly more invisible and moving at a high rate of speed, they can have a second chance at creating the lives they've always wanted.
The global problems we face cannot be solved by the same minds and people who created them, and today's world demands the ability to see the future and prepare for what lies aheadprepare for the opportunities as well as the challenges.
Like it or not, we are all involved in the greatest evolutionary event in human history. The Industrial Age is over, and the Information Age continues to accelerate. The visible agents of change have become invisible...and harder to see. And the future belongs to those who can train their minds, use the past to see the future, and take the steps to create the positive changes they want to see in their lives.
Second Chance is a guide to understanding how the past will shape the future and how you can use Information Age tools and insights to create a fresh start. This book is a guide to facing head-on the dangers of the crises around us - and steps and tips for seizing the opportunities they present.
    Members Reviews:
    Err... Not impressed.
Robert Kiyosaki, is awesome, I've read several of his books and they were evolutionary in his advice and experiences. But this book had an agenda to push you towards his way of thinking. I am not dissing his dream about being a giver/educator, or his idea's. He says right off that this is not a religious book, but I couldn't help feeling like he was preaching to me. I am not a gazillion billionaire like him, so my opinion should be taken with a grain of salt,
I kind of hate how he plays his Rich Dad Poor Dad (RDPD) down as an marketing pamphlet for his game. Everyone knows that RDPD was an awesome book along with Cash-flow Quadrant. Yah, however I can't recommend this book, honestly I want to ask for my money back on this one. I won't do that because in general Robert Kiyosaki is awesome. The righteous kick he is on in this book made it a real struggle for me to get through it.
He should change the title of this book, it seems to be more of a Biography then anything else. When I bought this book I was looking for pivotal mind blowing evolutionary business changing philosophy like Cash-flow Quadrant. Not a biography or anything about his faith, what his definitions of good vs innuendos evil. If it had said "Second Chance, My Biography" I think the whole idea of what I was buying and my expectations would have been different which would have altered my opinion as well.
    Un-Ignorable book! :)
If you could sum up Second Chance in three words, what would they be?
    insightful, useful, brilliant
What did you like best about this story?
Kiyosaki has taken on a more sage-like voice in this book.

    Publisher's Summary:
You'll never see leadership the same way again after reading this book.
These 15 commitments are a distillation of decades of work with CEOs and other leaders. They are radical or provocative for many. They have been game changers for us and for our clients. We trust they will be for you, too.
Our experience is that unconscious leadership is not sustainable. It won't work for you, your team, or your organization in the long term. Unconscious leadership can deliver short-term results, but the costs of living and leading unconsciously are great.
Fear drives most leaders to make choices that are at odds with healthy relationships, vitality, and balance. This fear leaves a toxic residue that won't be as easily tolerated in an increasingly complex business environment.
Conscious leadership offers the antidote to fear. These pages contain a comprehensive road map to guide you to shift from fear-based to trust-based leadership. Once you learn and start practicing conscious leadership, you'll get results in the form of more energy, clarity, focus, and healthier relationships. You'll do more and more of what you are passionate about and less of what you do out of obligation. Your team will get results as well. Drama and gossip will all but disappear, and the energy and resources that fueled them will be redirected towardsinnovation and creativity.
Any one of these commitments will change your life. All of them together are revolutionary.
What do you need to bring to the table?
    Be curious.
Sounds so simple, yet in our experience it's a skill few have mastered. Most of us are far more interested in being right and proving it than we are in learning, growing, and shifting out of our old patterns. By default we gravitate toward the familiar. We're asking you to take a chance and explore the unfamiliar.

While building the Virgin Group over 40 years, Richard Branson has never shied away from seemingly outlandish challenges that others (including his own colleagues on several occasions) considered sheer lunacy. He has taken on giants like British Airways and won, and monsters like Coca-Cola and lost.
Now Branson gives an inside look at his strikingly different swashbuckling style of leadership. Learn how fun, family, passion, and the dying art of listening are key components to what his extended family of employees around the world has always dubbed (with a wink) the "Virgin Way."
This unique perspective comes from a man who dropped out of school at 16, suffers from dyslexia, and has never worked for anyone but himself. He may be famous for thinking outside the box - an expression he despises - but Branson asserts that "youll never have to think outside the box if you refuse to let anyone build one around you."
This is a unique audiobook on leadership from someone who readily admits he has never read a book on leadership in his life. So expect the unexpected.

Inspiration, and nuggets of wisdom for anyone
There are certain criticisms of this book that can be anticipated; I have heard said of many books in this category that the ideas are not new, lack earth-shaking originality. I think such criticisms miss the point in general, and overlook the real significance and value of this book in particular. The question to be asked is, has this book shaped your outlook on starting and running a business in a meaningful way. For me, the anecdotes are entertaining and inspiring, and the embedded encouragement is genuinely motivating. Mr. Branson certainly does have various unique takes on common wisdoms of business leadership. Beyond the interesting presentation of his "radical" confrontation of business convention, though, the impact of this book derives from the diversity and longevity of Mr. Branson's working experience. In a relatively short book, he covers a lot of ground, and relates an array of personal experiences, each punctuated by his take on the moral to be had from the story. Some may resonate with you, some may not, but by the end of it, you are likely to find that you have come away with a rewarding trove of new ideas, novel approaches to confronting your own business challenges, and a satisfying "can-do" attitude. I know I did.
    One Cool Dude
What did you love best about The Virgin Way?
Mr Branson has a very cool way about the way he talks about himself and his companies. HE oozes success and "Boss-nes" but never comes across as being condescending. In fact he seems like he would be a really cool guy to have as a mentor/boss/friend.
There is humor but it's never silly. It's a fairly light and yet informative book on general business and leadership, with Mr Branson's special twist.
The narrator actually sounded a bit like Richard Branson, which made this even better.
What did you like best about this story?
It was nice to hear a major player to share what principles worked for him and which didn't. Some of what he says goes a bit against conventional managerial and business wisdom, and I liked how he is steadfast in sharing his opposing views.
    More entertainment than meat
Overall not a bad work, but it's not ground breaking. The story of Virgin is interesting.
