And how will she ever prove that writing is worthwhile if her mother keeps telling her to "get busy!" and "be more productive"? Then one day Penelope discovers a hole in her schedule - an entire day completely unplanned! - and she mysteriously falls into it.
What follows is a mesmerizing journey through the Realm of Possibility, where Penelope sets out to find and free the Great Moodler, the one person who may have the answers she seeks. But a menacing shadow tracks Penelope's every move. Rare combination of wise and engaging!!
This is a true jewel of a book. I loved it from start to finish. Not only is it wonderfully fun to read, but it is studded with lovely pearls of wisdom-- the kind that make you think, and make you grow, too.
Penelope is that special, winning character who leaps off the page and becomes real in your head and heart, right away. She is genuine and earnest and fun and funny. She is trying to navigate the over-scheduled life her mother has created for her with her own inner creativity and desire to express herself authentically. She's resourceful, smart, and searching, and I love those qualities in people (real people and people on the page, who, when authors like Paige Britt create them, are every bit as real to me!).
The pearls of wisdom about how we define a quality life are never the heavy-handed, hit-you-over-the-head type. They are always part of the story in such a skillful, natural way that if you aren't in the mood for wisdom, you don't have to partake in any. In our frenetically-paced, over-extended life, though, I think the gentle, playful reminders of mindfully choosing where we place our attention (rather than being pulled along crazily by impossibly packed schedules) are exactly what we need.
This fabulous book gives readers rewarding fun in the form of an engaging story replete with appealing twists and turns and surprises; rich, relatable, memorable characters; vivid, beautifully-written descriptions that put you in place (both the real world we know and the unique story-world Penelope "falls" into)...and it gives its lucky readers much, much more: it provides a reminder of what really matters in life, and how we each have the ability to tap into that truth, any time we like.
I cherish books that leave you better than they found you. The Lost Track of Time is one of those rare books (and it's SO much fun, too! it's cake AND frosting!).
