Now the past is just a story, one I told in this book. Enter with a brave heart as you hear about my journey.

    INSPIRING
This review is from: LOVE, LIFE, & GOD: Getting Past the Pain (Kindle Edition)
If you've had a lot of turmoil (aka adventure) in your life, along with numerous health challenges, this book may be for you! This book is a narrative of the many hardships this woman has experienced (a memoir). She entertains the reader with her life stories... places she had lived, people who have passed through her life - and animal stories, too. She begins to find multiple ways to shift her cognitive view of the world, which results in a transformation of herself, and her life. There is victory at the end of this book as her journey leads to her ability to create a meaningful life for herself, and enables her to deal with her physical challenges in a much healthier way. I think everyone's life is a journey; and everyone has a story to tell. It is inspiring when someone makes their 'ordinary' life - 'extraordinary'.
Ms. Alter demonstrates by example, how one can begin to look at the long held beliefs behind their problems, and take that journey to a better life.
    Written in a biographical format.
Heart rending - A must read
Let me say up front, I have never before written a book review, but Iâm about to give you a two-fer.
I met this author, Rene Altar, quite incidentally when she was acting as a volunteer worker in the Lampasas, Texas visitors center. I had stopped in that city to do some casual photography and needed some information of the area.
I would have never guessed at what would follow the brief visit with the vivacious lady sitting behind the desk. In short time I learned she was a published author, a budding photographer, a musician, and a song writer. A lot of talent in a small package.
But looking into her pretty eyes and at her sweet face, who could ever know the terrors and pain hiding behind her smile? I was soon to find out. This review pertains to two of her books â Appearances and Love, Life, & God. To read only one of the two would be like leaving the proverbial glass half full (or half empty) as the case may be. Even though each book stands on its own merits, I strongly suggest the reader not stop at just one. Appearances rather sets the stage for what is to come in Love, Live, & God, so by the time youâve read them both you will have traveled with her through many years of her life as she shares the horror she faced, the hurts she endured, the disappointments which befell her, the betrayals thrust upon her, and the mental crashes she experienced.
But fortunately, thereâs an upside to all those pitfalls in her life. As the reader journeys through the years with her, Alter eventually claws her way out of the muck and mire in which sheâs been existing to finally arrive at a point where she can see the sunshine, hear the birds sing, and relish the sight of a rainbow. She finally realizes she is a child â a child of God.

  • Success with Less Audiobook by Karen Mangia

    Title: Success with Less
Subtitle: Releasing Obligations and Discovering Joy
    Author: Karen Mangia
    Narrator: Lisa-Gabrielle Greene
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 3 hrs and 58 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-19-16
    Publisher: Marie Street Press
Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 2 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
At the age of 33, Karen Mangia faced an undiagnosed illness - she didn't know what to call it, and neither did a team of five doctors. Despite diet and exercise, she gained weight, lost color in her skin and eyes, watched her energy drain away. Who was she? What was she becoming? And what exactly was wrong with her? Through the confusion, Karen kept working, doing, being and achieving - sacrificing her health, her relationships...herself. A last-ditch trip to an unorthodox doc helped her to face a crossroads in her life - identifying the childhood reason for her poor health - and helping her to turn her life around.
A recovering overachiever, Karen's journey through misdiagnosis left her wondering, "What more can I do?" The key to her success wasn't tied to her determination, her ambition, her relationships - she had to simplify, and adopt a powerful new formula for creating a life without regrets. A simple realization led her to a three-step process that has transformed her life, her relationships and her health.
Success with Less provides the listener with insight into relationships, career management, health, diet and wellness - because Karen discovered a powerful formula that simplifies the tough stuff. Her journey is one of candid ups and downs: from accomplishment to disappointment, confusion to insight, and ultimately, a simple life-altering formula that anyone can grasp.
Success might be best defined as that elusive something that's always out of reach. But what if having more started with doing less? Beyond just a minimalist approach to life, this book describes how to have less of the self-created labels and obligations that keep you from being who you were meant to be. "Less" is about choosing the things that really matter (and remove the obligations that don't). What's left over is a new definition of success - a success that's within your grasp.
For every woman who has ever believed it was her job to please others, to keep the peace, and to keep trying no matter what life offered, this book stops the noise.
    Members Reviews:
A must read for anyone ready to cease striving and rediscover joy... in both your personal & professional life!
Karen Mangia's witty, candid testimony of her journey behind the scenes of her successful career is a refreshingly transparent gift that teaches a lathe to realizes success without continually striving to do more.
In fact, Karen offers one of the most practical guides I've found to define and achieve both professional and personal Success with Less.
Karen's convicting questions (and helpful tools like her career blueprint) challenge the reader to rediscover personal goals, dreams, and even the joys and purpose in life.
Join her in the journey to explore the challenges, fears, and eventual epiphany that led to her greatest breakthrough yet - that of living a life of Success - with Less!
    Terrible narration
Good message - read the book on paper or kindle. DO NOT _LISTEN_TO THIS BOOK. It is terrible audio. You can hear the reader shuffling paper and other kinds of background noise and she speeds up and slows down a lot and overall, very sloppy audio.

How can we truly love if we do not understand
Open your eyes. Open your ears. This book is a call for recognition from the once silent women around you who have endured abandonment, shaming, terror and profound loss. Any one of these women could be someone you thought you knew so well. And didn't. How can we truly love if we do not understand? As a mental health professional and a friend, as a woman and a spiritual human being, I read this book of true short stories with the growing recognition that we do not truly know one another until we learn to listen without judgment. And who are we to judge? This breathtakingly honest book should be read by those with a commitment to know the truth and the humility to drop the stones that Jesus dared us to throw, but only if we could claim utter faultlessness in ourselves. If we are members of a culture that degrades, shuns and threatens vulnerable girls and women with abandonment in all of its myriad forms, we are hard-pressed to claim that we are without fault. Have the courage to read Untold Stories, even if you can read just a little at one sitting. It will expand your capacity to comprehend the work that needs to be done. And isn't that the starting point for a real solution to the crises that are so poignantly described in this book?
    love, and reproduction
Very important contribution to our understanidng of life, love, and reproduction!
    A joy to read
The stories are extremely well-crafted. Each one speaks to a different circumstance of reproduction in America. It is a lovely creation.
    Truly eye-opening
This anthology of intimate first-person accounts of reproductive life is truly eye-opening. Abortion, birth, adoption, being born intersex, getting fertility treatments as a lesbian, and much, much more. I loved the vivid individual voices of the different writers, who are of all races, ethnicities and orientations, and the complexity of their stories.

Sad Is Not Bad is a memoir based on "Dear Jerry" letters written to the author's husband after his death. While there are many ways to process grief, as a professional grief counselor, she had always recommended writing as a therapeutic tool. Experiencing sadness, one of a myriad of normal feelings, is part of the healing process; thus the title. Be prepared to be moved
First I should warn anyone who has lost someone they loved, to be prepared to read this wonderful book with a large box of tissues near their side. The book has universality in as much as anyone who has grieved for a lost mate will fully understand the author's feelings.
Read it and weep and many thanks to the author for putting into words what I am sure most people can only appreciate once the inevitable in their life occurs.
Thank you Harriet and thanks to your daughter in law for recommending it to me.

Keeping the Flame of Love Even in Memory While Healing After Loss!
At certain times in our lifetime we all face loss of loved ones. How we deal with the grief of losing someone we love and cherish is as much difficult and hurtful as the loss itself. We deal with grief in different ways, trying to come to term with or overcome the cause of our grief. Harriet Vogel wrote a beautiful and extremely helpful book about how to deal with grief: Sad is Not Bad: Itâs How We Grieve After Weâve Loved.
By dealing with her own grief following the sudden death of her Husband, Harriett weaved together a tapestry of humane and sensible ways of coming to terms with her loss. She penned letters to her husband superbly and affectionately meshing her memories with him with the chores of her daily life. In so doing so clearly and apparently unintentionally, she grieved by emphasizing the flame and the glow of her life with him, a catharsis made so honestly emotive and gratifying by wrapping it with the values of Jewish tradition and healthy axioms. By displaying a disposition reflected in Albert Einsteinâs adage: âLife is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance you must keep moving,â and in the Jewish tradition to light a candle whose internalized message was that ârather than mourn the absence of the flame, let us celebrate how bright it glowed,â Harriett lived with her grief not as a trauma but as an aspect of humanity. All along, her letters glowed with that human desire for hope, appreciation of nature, love and compassion even in the memories of shared life.

    Passing On Your Values
I think many fathers struggle with how to pass along their values and faith to their sons and daughters. I have. I appreciate Rich Klena's transparent conversation with his son and the solid and grounded foundations that he provides along with his own ups and downs attempting to live out these principals. It's opened new avenues for me to share my life without sounding like I'm preaching to them.
