    What makes us monsters?
A psychotic patient with two impossible claims.
A leading forensic psychiatrist on the edge.
It's not just Dr Dominick's career that's in danger....
As a forensic psychiatrist at New York's leading institution of its kind, Dr Lily Dominick has evaluated the mental states of some of the country's most dangerous psychotics. But the strangely compelling client she interviewed today - a man with no name, accused of the most twisted crime - struck her as somehow different from the others, despite the two impossible claims he made.
First, that he is more than 200 years old and personally inspired Mary Shelley, Robert Louis Stevenson and Bram Stoker in creating the three novels of the 19th century that define the monstrous in the modern imagination. Second, that he's Lily's father. To discover the truth - behind her client, her mother's death, herself - Dr Dominick must embark on a journey that will threaten her career, her sanity and ultimately her life.
Taut, terrifying and impossible to put down, The Only Child is perfect for fans of Lauren Beukes and Stephen King. Read by Laurence Bouvard.
    Critic Reviews:
"Pyper is a master architect of dread.... Compulsive and nerve-jangling." (Lauren Beukes on The Damned)

    Sounds better than it is
intriguing concept but the story was poorly executed. Would not listen to again I don't think.
    Not Pypers Best
It just did not read one Andrew Pypers work. As if he let someone else ghost write it for him. Not an overly entertaining story either. If you're a fan of Pypers books, I would not recommend this one for fear of tarnishing your view of his work.
Not what I thought it would be
I didn't even bother finishing this book. I actually went back and re-read the overview at the half way mark to see how I got it so wrong. The monster (father) is a vampire and no where in the synopsis did it mention that. It dragged when it should have gone fast and moved way too quick when it needed detail. 'Impossible to put down?' I wouldn't bother picking it up!

    Publisher's Summary:
Dr. Kimberly Powell, a PhD in neuropsychology, works in a research lab trying to understand the roots of violence by stimulating the brains of aggressive rats to reduce their savagery.
Her successes lead to phase I safety trials in volunteers and prisoners, and then to phase II and III studies in patients.
Soon it becomes clear that Kim's brain stimulating techniques, besides controlling aggression, offer the potential to cure a number of medical problems including Parkinson's disease, depression, PTSD, and many others.
When the court instructs her to treat a psychopathic killer, she's appalled. What would such a killer, if cured, still owe to his victims and to society?
The ethical implications of the research and especially its application on humans are substantial, but so, too, is her altruistic desire to help.
Where is the balance and how far and how fast should these trials proceed - and, at what cost?

    Really liked this book.
I chose this book because I love anything to do with medical good or bad. I haven't read many books about psychological problems and this book was very enlightening. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes medical books.
    Exciting!
Love all Lawrence Gold's books! Exciting, interesting and well written!

Another great read by Dr. Gold
Lawrence Gold. MD now author extraordinaire will keep you captivated with story lines in all his novels-this is no exception!
This is the brand new (just published 1/21/15) novel by my favorite author of medical mysteries/drama. Lawrence W. Gold. MD now author extraordinaire will keep you captivated with the story lines in all his novels. I have read every one of his novels so far. You don't have to worry about reading this series in order--they are all stand alone. Dr. Gold, with his vast knowledge of the medical profession writes about timely topics within a fictional setting. State of Mind is about research and the ethical problems that can arise--especially when dealing with psychiatric problems.
Try to imagine if a way was figured out to cure people of PTSD, Parkinsons and the like by using a non invasive brain altering mechanism. Then imagine if it actually worked--at least for a while. Of course the government is involved which helps muddy the water--and a Judge's son turned psychotic murderer after sustaining a head injury in football-Of course lawyers get involved.
The last sentence in this novel is:
David scanned the room, paused and turned to Kim, âMaybe, our next project for TCPU treatment should be to use the technique to raise the average IQ.â âGreat, Michael said, âletâs start with politicians.â
    I couldn't agree more!!
    Ethics vs. Advanced Medical Research
REVIEW: STATE OF MIND BY Lawrence Gold
Author Dr. Lawrence Gold presses all the contemporary ethical dilemmas in his newest medical thriller, STATE OF MIND. Ethical considerations are of the essence from the very beginning: to what extent is scientific research entitled? Experimentation? Changing personality? Using individuals charged as terrorists as clinical guinea pigs? Dr. Kim Powell stands with resolve on the platform of ethics; some other scientists and researchers are less so.

    Medical Chiller and Thriller
This story will grab you quick and keep your turning pages till the wee hours of the morning! The characters are well developed, the narration is excellent, and the story line...well, it is scary and fascinating. As a tiny baby grows outside it's mother's womb and inside a fish tank converted to an artificial womb you will hold your breath at moments and applaud at others. As a long-time reader of Robin Cook, I whole heartedly recommend this book!
    Fantastic creative suspenseful first novel
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Rebirth is a suspense novel about a desperate father's attempt to cure his seriously ill daughter by using his profession as a geneticist to manipulate pregnant women's fetuses. The new author's story is replete with villains, romance, a bit of "typing" ,and a bit of unrealistic science, but she pulls it off nicely with a well written, fast moving, suspenseful style.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Rebirth?
Don't want to spoil anyone, but my favorite scene was the surprise birth and even more surprising outcome.
Which character as performed by Ayelet Sror was your favorite?
One of the things I liked about this book was the evenness of the characters--no one was greater than the other. They were typed a good bit--desperate doctor, Mexican characters, sickly girl--but this is probably typical of new writing.
That said, my favorite character was Janice. Strong yet vulnerable mom-to be.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I did listen to this book in one sitting! As I mentioned earlier, it was really written well and flowed so smoothly I didn't realize time went by.
    Any additional comments?
I received this book in exchange for an honest review.
    Unsettling but intriguing
I almost didn't finish this. I'm so glad I did.
At first I just couldn't get into it. I'm not really sure why. Perhaps I just wasn't in the right mood for it at the time. I stopped listening to it for a few weeks. I came back to it yesterday and decided to try listening to it. After a few more chapters I was pulled in and wanted to know what would happen.
The tale starts off sad and slightly twisted. Then it gets even sadder and horrifyingly twisted. The ending actually surprised me, which is rare. It wasn't what I was expecting but I liked it quite a bit.
The narration was not my favorite. I ended up speeding it up a bit, occasionally up to 2x speed. I just didn't enjoy it. I was tempted several times to return the audiobook and find the ebook.

Kent, 1796. Shocked to discover a dying man on his doorstep - and lucky to avoid a bullet himself - Reverend Hardcastle finds himself entrusted with the victim's cryptic last words. With smuggling rife on England's south-east coast, the obvious conclusion is that a dodgy deal has gone wrong. But why is the leader of the local Customs service so reluctant to investigate?
Ably assisted by the ingenious Mrs Chaytor, Hardcastle sets out to solve the mystery for himself. But smugglers are not the only ones to lurk off the Kent coast, and the more he discovers, the more he realises he might have bitten off more than he can chew.

A Page Turner of a Mystery
The Body on the Doorstep is the first Romney Marsh mystery and what a clever and entertaining mystery it was!
Reverend Hardcastle, the rector of a small village in Kent, enjoys a claret and a port and a brandy and the villagers look upon him as a harmless, alcoholic idiot. While most of them are involved in smuggling in some way he turns a blind eye and, in appreciation of his discretion, is often rewarded with a bottle of brandy on his doorstep.
But what he found on his doorstep one evening was not his favourite brand of brandy, it was the bloody body of a young man who's dying words are told to the reverend.
This starts Hardcastle on a quest to discover who he was and why he was killed. While out walking he meets a widow, Mrs Chaytor, who is also curious to know some answers and, together they form an unlikely partnership, which I thought worked really well in the story. The villagers would tell things to her that they wouldn't tell Hardcastle and vice versa.
This was a complex, but not complicated, story about smugglers, treason, traitors and spies ........ in a village fearful that the French would invade the country at any time.
Full of colourful characters, my favourite of whom was the Reverend Hardcastle who was a whole lot cleverer than his villagers thought he was; he spoke plainly, offending most people apart from the fascinating Amelia Chaytor who knew her own mind.
A well plotted, well written story that I very much enjoyed and eagerly look forward to the further adventures of Hardcastle and Chaytor!
At the beginning of the book there is a map of the area featured in the story - I could follow the characters and picture where they were which made it all the more enjoyable - I do love a map!
Excellent Debut of a New Historical Mystery Series
Bravo for this debut historical novel by Marilyn Livingstone and Morgen Witzel! The Anglo-Canadian couple, co-authors of a score of nonfiction books, have produced a suspenseful mystery set on the edge of Englandâs Romney Marsh in 1796. Smuggling of spirits and other contraband from France is rife on this part of the Kentish coast, despite the efforts of competing groups of Customs and Excise enforcers. Amid general worry about a French invasion fleet crossing the Channel, a man pounding desperately on St. Mary in the Marshâs rectory door at midnight is shot dead before he can do more than gasp a few words to the rector.
