He felt threatened....
Sex, drugs, and missing money...not your ordinary trip to the dentist! An ex-con, a stripper, a psychologist, and a dentist all have one thing in common - former Southern California D.A. turned private investigator, Richard McCord.
Surviving numerous challenges over the years, both personally and professionally, Richard McCord discovers he's again facing a predicament. What appeared to be a simple case quickly explodes into multiple murders, a Mexican drug cartel connection, temptation from a vivacious exotic dancer, and maybe even a serious relationship with a beautiful therapist.
McCord is never one to walk away from danger, but he's now struggling with his emotions. At times, the old comfort of a bottle of booze seems mighty inviting, as he walks a thin line of vulnerability. Will he stay strong, or give in to his weaknesses and end up hating himself?

A likable central character and a twisty mystery
I bought this novel out of curiosity after I found out that L.R. Pendleton is Linda Pendleton, wife of Don Pendleton, creator of one of my favorite fictional characters, Mack Bolan, the Executioner. I'm glad I did. Linda's character Richard McCord isn't as hard core as Mack Bolan, but he is tough, troubled, well-drawn and likable. The murder mystery is twisty and not easy to guess. And there's some interesting character development in McCord through the course of the story. It definitely made me want to explore more of Linda Pendleton's books.
Grab a beer and enjoy...you are about to meet your newest friend
Linda Pendleton's new mystery is a very enjoyable read. Richard McCord is a character that will hopefully have many books that will continue his career. He isn't the typical one-dimensional PI, he has a history and brains that leaves a lot of potential for future books.
This is not my usual genre of reading, but having read Mrs. Pendleton in the past, I knew I would not be disappointed...and disappointed I was not. This one has enough characters interacting and strings attached to each to keep even a 'Game of Thrones' fan turning the pages. Not a dull moment, and the continual introduction of characters in this (hopeful) first book makes me eager to get back into the world of McCord.
There is plenty here for you to enjoy if, like me, you picture what you are reading as a film in your mind. The characters are well developed, the plot is fast paced and keeps getting a bit more tangled (in a good way) and the payoff...oh yeah...it's worth it.
Enjoy this one with an ice-cold beer (or two) as you will find yourself becoming friends with McCord and simply enjoying his world, which is a fully realized one that is familiar and the writing makes you feel like you are just sitting on the porch listening to a friend tell you his dealings for the week.
Highly recommend and I am certain that you, like me, will be eagerly awaiting the next client for Richard McCord.
