Another great read by Chris Simms
Chris Simms is a brilliant writer having read all of his books this series around character Iona Khan proves to be a series worth keeping up with. Iona could go far but always seems to distance herself in her own personal battle to be competitive with herself & in doing so is still not really 'One of the boys'
Maybe her next case will bring her closer to getting a partner that she can relate too she is a great policewoman and with the brilliant cases Chris Simms Creates I see a series well on the way to the Best sellers lists.
Thanks Chris for another brilliant read

If you could sum up First Do No Harm in three words, what would they be?
    Thoughtful, mentally-stimulating & engrossing
What was one of the most memorable moments of First Do No Harm?
Don't want to give anything away...
Which character as performed by Duane Berg was your favorite?
    Jack Norris, of course
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

    Any additional comments?
This was a fun read and I even felt like I learned something. You can tell this is a thoughtful author who
    Great Medical Mystery
Would you consider the audio edition of First Do No Harm to be better than the print version?
Not necessarily, sometimes you just want to read it yourself and imagine your own voices. I will probably end up reading the print version too.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Jack. Several reasons, but mainly because he was smarter than anyone else in my opinion.
What three words best describe Duane Bergs voice?
I'm not sure. He wasn't bad, but I just had a hard time listening for really long periods.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    No, it was too long.
    Any additional comments?
For a medical mystery this is a really good book! The author is fantastic too!

My New Favorite Genre - Medical Murder Mystery
Where does First Do No Harm rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
I would rank this book very high on my list. It is a relatively quick read (listen) but that time is spent in near constant suspense. I've always enjoyed a good mystery and, although I don't watch a lot of TV, I do like medical dramas. This book expertly combined the two. The underlying, devious criminal plot in this book is something I would have never imagined but seems medically plausible and not all that far-fetched. This book has a lot of action and the characters feel fully developed. I would highly recommend this book.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Dr. Jack Norris of course. Who wouldn't want to be a brilliant, popular MD with a beautiful and loving wife? Dr.

  • The Magician Audiobook by D. A. Pupa

    Title: The Magician
    Author: D. A. Pupa
    Narrator: L.J. Ganser
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 40 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-29-16
    Publisher: David A Pupa
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 3 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Medical Thrillers
    Publisher's Summary:
Hurricane Sandy ravages the Jersey Shore while simultaneously providing the backdrop for a horrible crime. A serial killer takes advantage of the night's ferocity and inflicts his own damage. The madman then disappears, leaving a famed FBI agent broken in the process.
Frank Sorello retires from the Bureau only to be drawn back into the game after a best-selling novel by a new author raises suspicions about details inside the book. Is the homicidal maniac announcing his return or is it purely a coincidence?
The intrigue builds as a young man with an intellect rivaling that of Einstein and Da Vinci is tragically connected to the Bureau's top agent. As the investigation is renewed, the murders begin once again. While the mystery unravels no one is truly safe; neither the gated communities of Hollywood nor the hallowed grounds of an Ivy League University provide refuge from what lies waiting in the shadows.
The suspense mounts as the hunt gets ever more personal when the agent's current romantic interest becomes a target. Sorello vows to put an end to the killer's reign in this fast-paced thriller, but the killer has other plans.
    Members Reviews:
Frank Sorello is on the case!
First off, I have to say the author, D.A. Pupa is one of the nicest people I've ever encountered. When I added his book to my TBR shelf, he personally thanked me, then when I listed it as read, he messaged me and thanked me for reading his book. So if for anything, read this book so that you can get a message from a really nice author thanking you for reading their book, it really makes you feel good! I wasn't even gifted a copy of this book or anything, I bought it for Kindle and then I bought the WhisperSync Audible option so that I could listen to the Audiobook.
The Magician is a book that switches back and forth between the past and present, and I know that's a commonly used trope these days, but I promise it's done well here. We are first introduced to present-day Frank Sorello, then the past is to see how the killer is brought up into a killer and how Frank's wife is killed during Hurricane (or is it SuperStorm?) Sandy. I'd say that most of the book is in the present and what's in the past doesn't detract; if anything, it gives the background information necessary to know what motivates the killer, James. I was glad that we were able to get into the mind of not only the hunter, but the hunted. There are quite a few more minor characters, and I feel like they could have been fleshed out a bit more, but honestly, I quite enjoyed the central spotlight being on James and Frank; it seemed a bit obsessive at times, but on the flip side, then we would see other characters and it would cool off.
I think my only couple criticisms would be that the ending isn't wrapped up very neatly and that a few things were just a bit too easy. POTENTIAL SPOILER. First, I have been told that there is a sequel in the works, but the ending isn't tied up in a pretty bow. If that's going to bother you and you're going to give this book a 1-star review because you can't handle a book that ends but doesn't quite resolve everything, don't waste our time. This is a phenomenal book that the author has obviously worked very hard on; I'm really looking forward to reading the sequel.

    Title: Debridement
    Subtitle: A Novel
    Author: Sean Dow
    Narrator: Dickson Lane
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 9 hrs and 39 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-26-16
    Publisher: Sean Dow
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Medical Thrillers
    Publisher's Summary:
Dr. Jack Hastings had what he considered a satisfying life as a critical care and pulmonary physician, wanting only the personal satisfaction of a life well lived, and the knowledge that he had made a difference in the lives of his patients.
But fate can have other ideas. In Jack's case, that came in the form of a groundless malpractice suit. He knew all too well what such a suit could do - he'd seen it happen far too often to his fellow physicians. To make matters worse, the attorney handling the suit was the worst of his kind, a scumbag who made spoiled milk smell like a fresh spring day.
Looking at the impending destruction of his life, Dr. Hastings formulates a plan - he will rid himself, and the medical community of the problem lawyer. The plan goes smoothly, but Jack might have done things differently, if only he had known what would come next.
    Members Reviews:
    Entertaining
I knew the author when I was a family medicine resident and he was a pulmonary critical care attending. It certainly seems autobiographic in the sense of the speech patterns, political references, etc EXCEPT that I know it is purely fiction. I would guess that Dr. Dow has an active fantasy life!! I was trying to locate him to send a patient to him only to find out that he had moved and that led me to Facebook and the subsequent news that he had written the aptly-titled book. I'm known to him as Gayle Schantzen. I found it quite entertaining and I'm sure any doctor that has been involved with a malpractice attorney could relate to the frustrations.
    A guilty pleasure!
This is a guilty pleasure. You root for the protagonist despite or maybe because of what he does. This is a tale of black humor. Yes, there are some cliches and a few places where you have to buy the premise, but you are having so much fun reading along that you don't mind them.
    Suspenseful
The book kept me in suspense till the very end! I thoroughly enjoy Dr Dow's books and would highly recommend them to anyone!!!
Finally read the book written by a doctor I had worked with in the ICU a few years ago and couldn't put it down. Congratulations
The perfect book to read when you need to escape the long hours and hopeless feelings of working in a critical care areas of the the hospital.
    Wonderful!!
Sean Dow is an up and coming writer! I hope everyone will enjoy these books as much as I have!! I can' wait for him to get another book out !!

  • N19ETEEN Audiobook by Aaron Patterson

    Title: N19ETEEN
    Author: Aaron Patterson
    Narrator: Julie Hoverson
    Format: Unabridged
    Length: 57 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-20-16
    Publisher: StoneHouse Ink
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Medical Thrillers
    Publisher's Summary:
N19ETEEN is based on a true story because of how hard it is to believe I turned it into a fictional short story. I added some backstory that is made up, but the main plot happened to some friends of mine. This is a medical/thriller/drama about a family that is cursed with death, all because of a rose.
If you want something different and a little off the path, give N19ETEEN a try. And think twice, the next time you stop and smell the roses.
    Members Reviews:
A quick read, but not much else to it
The short story "19" is a quick read by Aaron Patterson. It took me less than two hours to finish the story.
The story opens with Henry getting a letter out of the blue from Mandy, his ex-fiancé--about 60-years ex. This is the only time we see Henry. The rest of the story is in the form of a manuscript sent to a writer ex-boyfriend. Henry never returns, we never hear about what caused the breakup of their relationship, or even, really, why he is there.
The "manuscript"--the rest of the short story--is written choppily. We see little vignettes of the main character's past before jumping ahead nearly 50 years to where the bulk of the story resides.
I really didn't enjoy Mandy much. She seemed whiny, paranoid and a little OCD there at the end. The "special power" the women in her family seem to have--knowing when someone is going to die--only seems to work once. There is never any mention of the smell of roses (a better title for the story) coming more than once, but it frightens her nearly to death when it happens (granted, her husband is in the hospital at the time, but still).
There were a few times when Mandy breaks off from her "manuscript" and speaks directly to Henry (without mentioning his name). These few instances are rather jarring. Once, she also uses the word "puke," which is just as jarring. Yes, the word has been used in English since Shakespeare's time, but it didn't seem to fit the character.
The formatting of the ebook leaves a great deal to be desired. There are no "page" breaks, each section starts right after the previous one. Instead of starting at the preface (a quote from Romeo and Juliet, which is not attributed properly), the file opens at the copyright page. There is no demarcation between parts other than a quick reference to the side and the entire file is in italic text.
If you're looking for a quick read this one is enjoyable enough. If you're looking for a thriller, or something that will keep you on the edge of your seat, you might want to look somewhere else.
    It's Unluckier Than E18teen
Aaron Patterson, author of a number of popular hardboiled thrillers, tries for a change of pace in "N19eteen," a supernatural short story that is somehow billed as a medical thriller. Although it's far from a medical thriller, the story can be described in medical terms as a botched operation.
The bulk of the story concerns a middle aged woman who understandably gets quite worried when her husband is admitted to the hospital a few days before Christmas. However, it's not just the potential seriousness of her husband's condition that worries her. No, she encounters some bad omens that convince her that her hubby is doomed. And it's not just one omen, it's a whole bunch of them. For starters, she smells roses when there's no roses around.
