I love a good middle grade and this one was a ...

I love a good middle grade and this one was a delight. Leo and her family are brujas who own a bakery and bake magic into sweets. Sheâs eleven and wants to do all that her sisters do, thereâs a good bit of snooping and sneaking around and accidental spells. All of it was fun and sweet and I love that there are recipes in the back. It gave me Coco vibes with the family element and both are set with Mexican main characters. Itâs adorable.

Warning: Extreme drool from recipes and descriptions of delicious baked goods, do not read on an empty stomach.

Absolutely loved this middle grade novel about Leo, a young Bruja who is navigating her newfound powers and family secrets. The dynamics of her large, loving, and hilarious family were an absolute delight to read, and I especially adored Leo's relationships with her sisters. I just want to hand this book to kids everywhere.

Love (and Sugar and Magic)

This book was so great! I very much enjoyed following all of Leo's hijinks and learning the rules of her family's sweet, loving magic. Honestly though, my favorite parts aren't about magic at all though: they're all of the interactions between Leo's family. Each of her 4 older sisters (and her parents) has her own way of relating to Leo and making her feel loved. Add to that the Mexican-American culture and the mouth-watering descriptions of baked goods, and you'll understand why I would recommend this book to anyone!

Tolerance and Acceptance in a Great True Story!

This is a great book for kids and adults to learn about tolerance and acceptance. We use it in our school district as a summer reading project and were pleased with how people found so much meaning from it when we had out book review session in the fall. The fact that it is a true story brings overlapping elements that would be hard to find in a work of fiction.

It is a book to be enjoyed by all

This book was precious if I can call that. Children have an innate knack for bridging all sorts of situations. It is a book to be enjoyed by all.

Acceptance

Great story of genuine love between families of different culture and race. This story serves as a reminder of looking beyond the differences and love people for who they are. Heroes may just live down the street if are open to possibilities.

What a cool friendship!

My son read this for a book report. He loved it. Thought it was pretty cool that an ordinary boy became friends with a professional baseball player! He didnât care for the first person narrative though.

Amazing

I would prefer this to kids 8 and up. It talks about some topics sad but true. This book is truly a must read! It is based of of the time period of segregation and racial discrimination around 1947-mid 1950's. :(

Better Than What I Expected

I got this book on a lark. I started listening and at first I thought it was for a younger age group but I kept on listening. I really got into the characters and the Christmas time of the year. It surprised me what a good book it was. I really liked the story and thought it had a good ending. The narrator did a very good job. The only thing I did not like was the epilog. It entirely changed how I felt when I left the recording. I wish the author well in her quest but I just wanted to stay where the book left me for a while. I didn't care why the author did a couple of things in the book and why. I regard that as private. What I cared about was where the book left me when the book was done. Over all I found it to be a good listen for any age.

even at nearly 40 I LOVE this series

Rick writes as though each and every character is his best friend! The way Alex has grown is amazing. His understanding of Muslim culture is inciteful. The way it all comes together keeps you entertained to the very last word and leaves you wanting the next book.... like now!

Doesn't disappoint!

This is the second book in this series and my son couldn't put this book(nor the first one) down! He doesn't have the love of reading that I or his 10 year old brother do, but he loved this book! The key to fostering his "like" of reading has been finding books that would interest him. This book book didn't disappoint. We look forward to the third book in the series being released in the fall.

Delightful!

The story of the groundling known as Number 13 is a delight for all ages. Its a coming of age story about discovery. Discovering friends, discovering courage and discovering ones voice. The narration of Simon Vance is superb and really gives voice to the characters. Its a quick listen and I highly recommend it.

it's boring at first but when you Riley get in to it every thing seems to go wrong for him and little good things on the way then it takes a turn for the better I love this book

a true hero story

bravery, humor, vivid descriptions, fully developed characters, excellent narration with voices and melodies to the few songs that would have been hard to imagine by reading the book alone. I loved it as much as my 7yo and 8 yo.
