    Stardust, another winner by Parker
I'm biased in favor of Parker's Spenser novels, I like all that I've listened to. There's always snappy dialogue and fast moving plot. This novel was great. I highly recommend it.
All Spenser's are worth listening too.
Would you listen to Stardust again? Why?
    No. A pretty predictable plot
Would you recommend Stardust to your friends? Why or why not?
A Parker fan probably wants them all. There are others I would recommend before this one for a casual listener.
What about Michael Prichards performance did you like?
I like all the various Spenser narrators. Montegna is my favorite. Prichard is fine however.
    Any additional comments?
I would put this one about in the middle of all the Spencer books as the plot isn't as good as many others.
he said, she said, gets in the way.
Worthy effort at detective noire, but modern setting gets in the way of nostalgic attitudes. Also the constant he-said and she-said does not work audiotorily.

    Title: Double Deuce
    Subtitle: A Spenser Novel
    Author: Robert B. Parker
    Narrator: David Dukes
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 4 hrs and 11 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-11-09
    Publisher: Phoenix Books

Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
A friend's girl and her infant daughter have been gunned down. Though the act at first appears to be an accidental drive-by shooting, it soon becomes clear that it was premeditated murder. Before they can solve the crime, Spenser and Hawk must take on an adolescent band of hardened urban warriors. As bullets fly and the brutality escalates, Spenser learns more than he ever dreamed about a generation imprisoned in a hell of poverty and hopelessness where muscle is the ticket to survival, and the surest way out is in a body bag.
Pulsing with moral complexity, Double Deuce is the kind of no-holds-barred action thriller only Robert B. Parker can create.
    Critic Reviews:
"The plot is nothing new - it might be described as Spenser meets New Jack City - but Deuce 's snappy dialogue, timely, fast-paced action and quick characterizations make it classic Spenser." (Publishers Weekly)
    Members Reviews:
    Good story, mediocre narrator
Spenser is one of my guilty pleasures. I read them in print as they came out, up to this one and a little beyond, and listened to a few of the later ones. Lately Ive started listening to the entire series in order. This is one of my favorites. Hawk and his new girlfriend (!) take Spenser to the ghetto to seek justice for the murder of a teenaged girl and her baby. Spenser novels are always very talky and here the talk is mostly about the role of gangs in the ghetto. Then there is all the usual action, gun play, instinctive reaction to extreme danger, etc, formulaic, but entertaining for people who like this kind of stuff.
Robert B. Parker wrote old fashioned macho detective stories in the style that made film noir so much fun. The irrestible middle-aged tough guy with the brilliant beautiful lover (more than girlfriend, not quite wife), written by a middle-aged wanna-be tough guy is self-indulgent and sometimes tedious. Spensers relationship with Hawk is more interesting. Neither is the others sidekick, they are equals who back each other up as the situation requires. In Double Deuce, its Hawk in the lead. As usual, the plot is secondary to dialogue, but the story here is more intriguing than some of Parkers books.
The narrator is just wrong. I didnt much care for Michael Prichard in the first 18 books, but David Dukes is far worse. His faux-accents are awful - accents in quotes because none of them sounds like anyone Ive ever heard in actual speech. White guys doing black voices is always tricky, and with Hawk you have a white guy doing a black guy who sometimes speaks like a sophisticated intellectual and sometimes does a mean imitation of David Niven. Not easy, but Dukes always just sounds like a white guy trying to mimic a black guy. Of course any of us who ever watched an episode of Spenser: For Hire will always expect Hawk to sound like Avery Brooks, but I seem to remember liking the later narrators (Burt Reynolds and the very fine Joe Montegna) just fine.
Once you identify the main players, you could read the books out of order, but there is some character development along the way. In order is best if you can get past the less than brilliant narration. If not, just skip ahead to the later books.
    Good Story, Lousy reader
It was difficult to continue listening to this story because of the reader.

a good book but poorly described on audible
The Booklist review referring to the "second in the Tess Monaghan series" is not for this book but for "Charm City." I downloaded this from audible hoping for the second book because of that review.
    Nonetheless, it's good, hon.
    Excellent
Not a thriller (which is good). The pace is a bit slow, but a rich and interesting mystery is laid out in a leisurely rate. The character development is outstanding. The narration is outstanding and greatly enhances each character, and the city itself.
    Of Edgar Allan Poe...
Edgar Allan Poe lived, for a time and until his death, in Baltimore. While he actually died in October, this tale puts the date of his death on a cold, early morning January 19th, and surrounding that death swirl many tales, including an unknown, cloaked person who, yearly, visits the grave with three red roses and a half bottle very expensive wine. On this particular visit, there is a murder ... Another very good read from Lippman. 5 stars.
    Another Well Read Book
What made the experience of listening to In a Strange City the most enjoyable?
Learning the snip-it of Poe history true and not so true.
What does Barbara Rosenblat bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Barbara Rosenblat is an excellant reader. She is able to make each character different so when you hear the voice you know which character immediately. She seems to act the book as she reads. She is able to keep an excellant pace so that you don't want to stop listening. SHE IS A GOOD READER OR NARRATOR AS SOME CALL IT. GOOD, GOOD, GOOD READER. Starting the next book Barbara's last one. Not sure about the next reader for book 8.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Started the book at 8 am and I made it to 1am and had to go to bed. 7am comes to fast. Finished it while taking my shower. ( Good external speakers) So good.
    Love the Series
great storyline. great characters. perfect ending. I enjoy the Baltimore history included in the series.

    Very fun listen
For what this book is, it is very enjoyable. The narrator is fantastic, and the book was fun to listen to. For people who love British narrators, and light mysteries, I recommend it!
    Back door!
I came to this series via this book, which happens to be the back door (# 25 in the Hamish Macbeth series. Enjoyable characters, but it is clear that there are established relationships that you don't have the background on. I enjoyed this one enough to try and track down more of this series. The narrator was a good choice for this book.
Mystery and Charm in Northern Scotland
In this well-read, charmingly accented recording, Beaton's appealing characters become more engaging. I feel that I would recognize Hamish Macbeth if I passed him on the street.
The narrator really makes the story
As I've said before, Mr. Malcolm IS, repeat, IS Hamish MacBeth. And the character of MacBeth makes even a less than spectacular story worth my anticipation.
    A fun read!
Hamish is a great character that can, at times, be charming, impish... even romantic and touching... but always makes me laugh out loud! Characters that make me sad to come to the end of a story, but glad that is a series so there is more to come!

    Editorial Reviews:
This early Peter Decker/Rina Lazarus novels finds the couple newly married and honeymooning in Brooklyn during the High Holidays. When a teenage boy from an Orthodox family goes missing, Decker finds himself on the job again - with the trail of the boy and the young man he ran off with leading him back home to Los Angeles. Mitch Greenberg's performance is a wonderful match with the book - he delivers accurate Yiddish and Hebrew pronunciations and great local accents. Nice changes in tempo and pace when the action heats up and excellent voice modulation keep the listener plugged in to the story. For fans of the series, even if they've read the book already, this audiobook is a treat.
    Members Reviews:
Early book, but not her best
When Faye Kellerman is good, she's very very good. When she's bad, she's horrid. Well, "Day of Atonement" is the fourth Rina/Pete Decker book in the series, and isn't either very very good, nor is it horrid, exactly. it's somewhere in the middle. The problem is that we see a very different kind of Rina and Pete than we see in either the early books or certainly the more recent ones. Some of it isn't pleasant.
Many different times in this book, I -- who thought I personally adored Peter Decker, thought Rina was the luckiest girl in the world -- found myself ready to murder Peter if he kept it up. Wow - what a dictator! Unlike in earlier or later books, Peter here is shouting orders, right and left, expects them to be obeyed. He's short-tempered, unhappy at being where he is -- which is in Brooklyn, being introduced to Rina's former inlaws, the parents/family of her first (and now deceased) husband. Should she have forced Peter into that trip -- which must indeed have been difficult? Maybe not -- or certainly not at a high-stress time like the High Holidays, and not for so long a visit. Perhaps he should have said no to that -- but whatever, it all brings out the worst in Peter. At one point, he even handcuffs Rina to the steering wheel of the car, so she can't get out to meddle when he goes off to investigate something. Should she get out to meddle? No, she shouldn't. He was right to try to keep her away -- but wrong for taking her along on a work errand in the first place.
It gets a little tiresome, actually, the back- and-forth: Rina would be trying to find a way to nose in on his job, Pete trying to find ways to keep her out -- but he always relents a little, and that's when the trouble starts.
The best thing about the first three books in this series is the relatively accurate picture they offer of an orthodox Jewish lifestyle. I think a lot of readers -- Jewish and otherwise -- enjoy that glimpse into a world they otherwise won't see for themselves, and it was good that this series presented an insiders story. But this book has a different story line that makes that difficult -- we've got a lost teenager, one who seemed "weird" even before he got lost, and then went way, way, way off the beaten path when he did, probably not very realistically.

    Good Listen
Alafair Burke has a place in my library of must listen to authors. This is my first chance to get one of her books and I am delighted I did. Well written and great story. It flowed well and kept my interested the entire time.
While I think the story line is good, I think the character developement is lacking. Perhaps she is saving that for later books. Most characters were very shallow in revealing much about themselves to the listener, except for Hatcher. I think it would have been interesting to have more background on the killer. More about why he/she is doing what they are doing. This made it difficult to really empathize with them. Alafair Burke is an author to watch as time goes on. I can see nothing but better and better writings. This is only her 3rd book. She is just getting her feet wet.
    A Good Story, But.....
I usually wait for customer reviews but jumped on this one based on an published review by another author. It has a good story line but I didn't think the writing was all that great and the narration definitely turned me off. I thought that the female narrator way overused a coquettish tone with a lot of the dialogue and it just didn't fit. I'd pass on this one.
    Southern Accent?
I'm only halfway through the book so far. The story line is ok, but the narrator uses a slight southern accent for several characters. The story takes place in New York City and the characters are police officers. Ummm....what? The characters that are portrayed from Indiana have no accents. It is a bit annoying to listen to.
    Angel's Tip
This is my second Alafair Burke book about Ellie Hatcher, I enjoyed the building of the suspense and the usual police banter and the new partner. What was a turn off for me was the story was about a serial killer as was her first book. I am so tired of stories about serial killers. The reader was adequate. I will read another Burke but only if it not about a serial killer.
It's okay to read but don't listen to it.....
The story is ok as entertainment, not great but a nice distraction. I won't go out of my way to track down another Ellie Hatcher novel but I will read one if nothing else is available. I think I would have enjoyed it more if I had read it myself. This reader mispronounces many names. Olathe Kansas, Cartier watch, and Jake Gyllenhaal aren't everyday names but they are common enough that she could have found out the correct pronunciation. The voice she uses for Ellie Hatcher's partner is especially annoying. He's a black dectective from Brooklyn New York and she makes him sound like a white cowboy from Oklahoma. I definitely won't listen to another book with Eliza Foss as the narrator.

When Daniel starts making excuses, Corinna begins to worry about his absences and also the strange outbreak of madness which seems to be centred on Lonsdale Street. Will Corinna win through a maze of health regulations, missing boyfriends, sinister strangers, fraudulent companies, and back alley ambushes? Or will this be the end for the Earthly Delights Bakery?
    Members Reviews:
Witches and Covens and Curses, oh my!
I can't seem to get enough of Kerry Greenwood. In the fourth Corinna Chapman book Halloween is in the air and the witches are gathering. Meroe is as nervous as a very cool cat in a room full of rocking chairs. She is a solitary Wicca by preference (and because she doesn't really like other witches). Now there are hundreds of witches flooding into Melbourne for the Samhaine rites. And one of the more eclectic covens is on a purely material treasure hunt that threatens the sanctity of the rites. In the spirit of the season there is also a sudden increase in the number of people going mad in town. Corinna encounters one well dressed man in her alley who thinks that his hands have fallen off. Much as she is shaken by this it is nothing to how she feels when a man jumps to his death from the building next door thinking he can fly. Corinna has other causes for anxiety as Daniel has a friend named George staying with him. He may have forgotten to mention that George is tall, blonde, long legged, and imminently female. And George really doesnt like Corinna. There is also a new franchise bread shop right down the street from Earthly Delights with unbeatable prices, but no taste (on more levels than one). Its going to be a difficult spring for or intrepid heroine, but there is bread to bake so Corinna cant just lie abed and worry.
    Pronunciation counts.
Would you consider the audio edition of Trick or Treat to be better than the print version?
No. This is the worst of the recordings. (In a very relative way - it's still very very good.) Samhain is pronounced "SOW wen". And the narrator smacks and lisps excessively in this recording.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Trick or Treat?
I'm awfully fond of Uncle Solly, even if he does smack when he talks.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
The narrator has too many of the characters "smacking" before they start talking. And the pronunciations of wiccan ceremonies are massively incorrect and irritating. She was trying too hard making "voices" for many characters. (smack smack smack. Sigh.)
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I enjoyed the hostage standoff. Very unlikely but wouldn't it be nice if things turned out this way?
    Any additional comments?
    Pronunciation counts.
    Another classic Corinna story
Who was your favorite character and why?
I loved the Freegans! Such a good concept for the book.
    Any additional comments?
I loved this book as much as the previous in the series. The characters continue to develop (including the cats!) and I love that Corinna hates Christmas....or does she?
    Meh.
This book was a lot longer than it needed to be. The story wasnt bad per se, but it just took a long boring way to get there with little reward. There is a ton of food descriptions all the time, some witch stuff, lots of Nazi talk, and only a little Halloween with a small mystery.

So Bad on So Many Levels
If you want to listen to a smart, sexy, engaging novel that deals with serial killers, DON'T LISTEN to this novel. Reuben Montoya is truly hot, hot, hot (where ARE these guys???), and I wasn't sure of "whodunit" until near the end, but everything else? Formulaic and cliche. In fact, I think this author consulted the dictionary of cliches: (imagine quotation marks around the following) figment of her imagination, the flash of white teeth, when the going gets tough, the tough get going, too young to die, shake uncontrollably, tears burned [or sprang to] her eyes, This guy's dangerous. Don't worry . . . So am I, There but for the grace of God go I, nerves stretched tight as piano wires, figment of the imagination, brooding eyes, stopped dead in her tracks, icing on the cake, and so on. And don't forget the forms of erections, usually against the back. I'm especially troubled by Faith's rapes and her responses. And WOW! Talk about simplistic thinking? One of the characters, who knows she has been abducted by the serial killer, refers to him as a monster, a lunatic, a murdering psycho, and a creep Well. Yes. He's a serial killer. This could have been an interesting contrast in psychopathic behavior, obsession, lust, passion, and desire. But it's not.
So. If you want a smart, sexy, engaging novel that deals with serial killers, listen to
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and then be sure to listen to The Girl Who Played with Fire.
    No cliches. No formula.

Not too light, not too heavy, easy listening.
Like most of Alexander McCall Smith's stories, 'The Sunday Philosophy Club..'
is a little gem. At odd points you are nudged into thinking ever so gently.
    Nothing too hard.
Isabel Dalhouse is easily drawn into trying to understand why a young man died.
It is a plausible entry to the mystery. And that is unusual.
I found the reader's clipped style of reading distracting. At times I had to go back and listen again for that reason, to follow the story.
If you commute by train and can pause to look out a window to contemplate a little from time to time, and you like McCall Smith then you could really enjoy this story.
Hilary Neville's style of reading distracted me, it may not distract you. Listen to the sample.
    Review of Ethics
Is there anything you would change about this book?
Unfortunately I did not find this one of Mr McCall Smith's best works. The main character seemed pretentious and spent a lot of time questioning the ethical ramifications of others speech, actions and behaviours. While some time might have been spent on this more could have been done with the actual investigation and subsequent consequences.
Has The Sunday Philosophy Club turned you off from other books in this genre?
While this book didn't grab me, I will treat this as an anomaly and still listen to the next one in the series before making that determination.
Which character as performed by Hilary Neville was your favorite?
Ms Neville is a good reader but her performance did not generate any feelings towards any of the characters.
Do you think The Sunday Philosophy Club needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
Most certainly this novel needs a follow up. McCall Smith has put a lot of effort into fleshing out the characters another novel might show them with some spunk.
Found it hard to follow and listen to
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
No, too hard to follow, goes in too. Many directions. Normally like his writing but he lost me in this one.
    Disappointing
What did you like best about The Sunday Philosophy Club? What did you like least?
The book was well read but having recently listened to, and thoroughly enjoyed, the 44 Scotland St series of books I found the reference to crushed strawberry trousers and Peplow's paintings and others rather repetitive themes. I expected this series to be totally different. Had I listened to this book first I probably wouldn't have bothered to listen to the 44 Scotland Street series which would have been a big loss.
Has The Sunday Philosophy Club put you off other books in this genre?
I won't listen to the rest of this series.

Cam has no idea how dangerous his search will become, because in this part of Appalachia, matriarch Grinny Creigh and her extended family destroy those who intrude into their web. The Creighs control the crystal meth trade and own just about everything and everyone in their neck of the woods. But they also operate a much worse enterprise, a dark secret that terrifies any children unfortunate enough to come within their grasp.
Blocked by a menacing sheriff with ties to the family, Cam is shut down and sent away, no wiser about why the young woman was attacked and what she saw. He returns, stealthily stalking the Creighs and their secrets, moving ever closer to Grinny's mountain house and what it might conceal...not knowing that his presence in her web has been detected, and that the Creighs are hunting him with creatures bred for that purpose and starved into relentless fury.

    Love Them All
I'm afraid I totally disagree with the other review here. I've read all of the Cam Richter series including the new one Nightwalker. Deutermann couldn't write anything bad if he tried. This series is one of my favorites. I think the other reviewer should have finished the book. I always read books in a series in the order they were written. The Cat Dancers, Spider Mountain, The Moonpool, Firefly and Nightwalker. They are all excellent and much better if read in order. All of Deutermann's books are great but the Cam Richter series are still my favorites and hoping for another one in about a year. Read the book and make your own decision but read them in order, you won't be sorry you did. We all have different tastes so one bad review should not make a difference. And Dick Hill is the best narrator on the planet as far as I am concerned. Anything read by Dick Hill is better. A bad narrator can kill an audio book. Dick Hill won't dissappoint. Buy it and enjoy and read all the others in this series. I will be reading them more than once.
    Scotch and Silliness
Gee, A book rated by others so highly had me psyched and ready to have a great listen. I thought the plot premise was interesting. However, the author was overindulgent and went way way too far in my opinion; thus this book was truly silly and unbelievable. The characters became more and more ridiculous; the main character kept talking about drinking scotch every few sentences, and I just kept thinking, "shut up and just have a drink already". The female state agent, who although higher in rank than the male lead, along with other professional law enforcement agents, consistently deferred to the lead scotch drinking male. They all were pretty inept at tracking the bad guys, making one bad decision after another, maybe they were just too inebriated to do better. But I hung in there until the end, and it became a long haul after a while. I chose this book in a "three books for two credits" promotion..... and hey, sometimes you get what you pay for.
    Suspenseful, Thrilling, and Fun
This is one of the best that Deuterman has written in my humble opinion, and it is delivered wonderfully as only Dick Hill can.
