Changing narrators at book #16 is a bad idea
Is there anything you would change about this book?
the narrators. For 16 books Gene Engene has been the narrator and has developed the character of JP exceptionally. His skills make him one of my favorite narrators.
I'm sure Debra and Cotter are fine narrators but it was very difficult to listen to them read this book - especially Cotter since his voice is 180 degrees different from Gene's
How could the performance have been better?
Only one narrator. I'm not a fan of multiple narrators. This sounds like old time radio acting out a story.
Did Partner in Crime inspire you to do anything?
    no
    Any additional comments?
In an effort to be redundant - note to publishers - stick with what is great.
Like JA Jance and JP Beaumont but not the narrator
After Gene Engene, no one can quite do JP Beaumont justice. The narrator makes the book.

    Title: Deep South
    Author: Nevada Barr
    Narrator: Barbara Rosenblat
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 12 hrs and 11 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-22-04
    Publisher: Recorded Books
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 366 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
Nevada Barr's award-winning mystery series captivates fans with vividly drawn wilderness settings and the resourceful sleuth, middle-aged park ranger Anna Pigeon.
Deep South portrays Anna boldly confronting hostile teenagers, suspicious locals, and a resentful "old-boy" network as she struggles to solve a gruesome murder. Anna leaves behind her beloved Mesa Verde to take on a position as district park ranger of the Mississippi Natchez Trace Parkway. Once there she faces an angry staff that refuses to work with a woman supervisor. But she pushes that difficulty aside when she stumbles over the body of a teenage girl, shrouded in a hood reminiscent of the KKK. As Anna searches for the truth amidst lies and evasions, she discovers the overgrown woods, thick with kudzu, hold dark secrets that can only lead to violence. Nevada Barr draws on her own experience as a ranger on the Natchez Trace Parkway to create believable situations. Barbara Rosenblat transports you to the Mississippi countryside to feel the sultry heat and smell the heady scents.

    Critic Reviews:
"Barr produces another suspenseful and highly atmospheric mystery, illuminated even in this new setting by her trademark lyricism in writing about the natural world." (Publishers Weekly) "Barr paints a luminous picture of the geography and the people of the Natchez Trace. Anna is a delight." (Library Journal) "Narrator Barbara Rosenblat turns in the virtuoso performance that listeners have come to expect. She distinctly renders the Deep South accents of whites and blacks; men and women; old, middle-aged, and juveniles." (AudioFile) "The novel offers the same strengths as its predecessors: vivid prose, a surprising plot, and a cast of sympathetic, well-rounded characters, both series regulars and a new crew of rangers and locals. There are some new pleasures as well: Barr effectively captures the beauty and menace of nature below the Mason Dixon Line and provides thoughtful insights into teens, race, and the Civil War." Narrator'w Swallowing Very Distracting
I like the Nevada Barr series. They are easy listening and don't compare to Michael Connelly or John Sandford, but if you know this, you don't expect the same level of plot and characters. Unfortunately this book is set in the south and since I am a recent transplant to the south, unfortunately I find it fairly accurate. What really bothered me, though, was the narrator's constant swallowing and breath intakes. It sounded like her throat was very dry and she needed water. It was distracting, especially the swallowing which bordered on grossness. It was an effort to continue to listen to the book to the finish. I will certainly sample the audio of any books Rosenblat narrates before purchasing.
    Great sense of place
I really like books that transport you to their setting. I felt like I had spent quite a few hours in sweaty Mississippi by the time I had finished this book. Really good writing on the critical scenes where she is attacked ( I dont think that is giving much away).

"Anyone who loves a good mystery should curl up gratefully with a cuppa to enjoy this rich 10th installment of the acclaimed British police procedural series....Once again, Robinson's work stands out for its psychological and moral complexity, its startling evocation of pastoral England, and its gritty, compassionate portrayal of modern sleuthing." Well Constructed Mystery
This is a totally absorbing mystery. I became completely involved with the well drawn characters. The book switches very smoothly from present to past and back again throughout the story which takes place in an English Village during World War II. The reader is gradually privy to the facts while the modern day detectives search the past to uncover the history of the body found in the dry reservoir. In A Dry Season is a very good novel and well worth a credit or purchase. Enjoy
    Wonderful mystery
Fascinating plot alternates between the murder 50 years ago to present. Great detective. Reader not bad, although I thought his "voice" for the detective was a bit more bullyish than I found the character. Loved every minute of it. Don't miss it.
    great book
The book is beautifully written and intriquing right to the last word. The reason I only gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is due to the reader. He does a fine job on the sections that are told in the third person, present day. However, I found his voice off-putting when he was voicing the first person viewpoint of a young girl during the 1940's.
    Very Enjoyable
This was the first Peter Robinson book I've read and I really enjoyed it. The narrator was a bit annoying at first but I soon got used to him. I love all the character development and descriptions; I wished it would never end.
I now hope to read more from this author on the Allan Banks character.
    Narration ruined the book.
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
I'm a die-hard fan of Peter Robinson, but I can't in all honesty recommend this book to anyone, friend or foe. The narrator's delivery is so grating, so alien, it has taken me nearly three years to complete the listen and then, due only to my $$ thrift, since having spent the credit, I couldn't allow it to be totally wasted. Perhaps there is another audiobook category Mr. Keith's delivery might fit? I'm not trying to be flip here, but maybe...Children's Books, or maybe The Wall Street Journal.

    Publisher's Summary:
It is dark territory, indeed. The dead woman remains unidentified and seemingly unknown to everyone. But her companion has a name: Gavin Quick, and his troubled past eventually landed him on a therapist's couch. It's there, on familiar turf, that Delaware hopes to find vital clues. And that means going head-to-head with Dr. Mary Lou Koppel, a popular celebrity psychologist who fiercely guards the privacy of her clients...dead or alive.
But when there's another gruesomely familiar murder, Delaware surmises that his investigation has struck a nerve. As he trolls the twisted wreckage of Quick's tormented last days, what he finds isn't madness, but the cold-blooded method behind it. And as he follows a chain of greed, corruption, and betrayal snaking hideously through the profession he thought he knew, he'll discover territory where even he never dreamed of treading.
As provocative as it is suspenseful, Therapy is premier Kellerman that finds the award-winning author firing on all creative cylinders and carrying readers on an electrifying ride to a place only he can take them, for an experience they won't soon forget.
    Critic Reviews:
"Compassionate, intelligent protagonists, interesting secondary characters (including complex villains), strong plot lines, and clear, unpretentious writing. Kellerman delivers all these once again." (Publishers Weekly)

    Fun Listening
It had been awhile since I'd had a good Kellerman book to enjoy. I started this on audio...got so hooked that I bought the $25 hardcover to read on a plane...then went back to audio when I got home.
This was enjoyable and well written. Great mystery and recommended.
A good story with a great reader
Kellerman always writes entertaining stories - some better than others. This was one of his better ones, though a bit on the long side. Milo is another great character, and Alex is 'real'. The plot coincidences were a stretch in places, but all in all, enjoyable.
The reader, Jonathan Rubenstein, is the best audio reader I have ever listened to (and I probably have listened to at least fifty books). His uses his voice, his inflections, intonations, accents - all of it - as if it were an instrument being played by a maestro. I guess it runs in the family, just not the piano!
    Therapy needs therapy
I am an avid fan of Jonathan Kellerman and am always the first to praise and recommend his books to my friends. However, this one came across to me as a real bomb. Neither Alex nor Milo had his usual sparkle and their back-and-forths, usually so lively and entertaining, were dull, to say the least. The writing, itself, was not up to par but was better than a lot of writers on their good days. I guess what I objected to most was that the author went on and on about the characters' pasts and maladies rather than advancing the story. The killer identified himself halfway through the book and the rest was merely filling. I would rather read a short, really great book than a long, repetitive one.
I will, of course, listen to more of Mr. Kellerman's books and I'm sorry I felt compelled to write this review but when my favorite author, at least in this genre, fails I had to tell you about it.

    Hilarious Art History Mystery
I loved the hilarious way Vicky Bliss competes with her boyfriend/collegue in their search to be first to find a fantastic relic. So what if she is beautiful, she's smart enough to make it on brains alone. They both know she is far smarter than he, and when through her superior physical strength and brains she saves both their lives, he is really chagrined. And of course she is instrumental to solving the mystery of where the relic is/what it is. I find Peters' style of writing and cast of characters in the Vicky Bliss series far easier to follow and get/stay interested in, than those in her Amelia Peabody series. I've read another Vicky Bliss story that was equally amusing, but with enough mystery to keep me guessing til the end.
    Entertaining
The beginning of Elizabeth Peters Vicky Bliss line of detective fiction is a bit over the top, but nevertheless a fun listen. Good narration and very good characterization. Not particularly deep or complicated. Light hearted fun.
Good Story... not so good reader
I wish there was a way on this system to rate a book and a narrator separately.
I'm a big fan of Elizabeth Peters and her Amelia Peabody series and have listed or read them all. When I ran out I decided to try the Vicky Bliss series which this is the first book of.
The store was ok. Not the best I've ever heard from Ms. Peters, but it was still interesting.
My problem was with the narrator.
The reader was so mono toned that there were parts in the dialogue where I had no idea who was saying what, and comments that I believe were meant to be humorous were said so flat that it lost all hint of humor.
I got the impression that the narrator was looking at this text for the very first time as she read. Sometimes it seemed as if she were robotic and as if she didn't know if what she was reading was a statement or a question until she got to the end of the line and had to make a quick inflection correction.
I have listened to books read by this narrator before, and though she's never been very lively, she's never been this flat.
I had a hard time enjoying the story because the droning narrator gave me a headache.
I've come away with an uncomfortable feeling about the Vicky Bliss series. I'm not sure if the reason I didn't enjoy the book was because I couldn't get past the narration, or if I really didn't like the story and charactors. But I'm leaning toward the narration.
If it were read better, I would have given it at least one more star, maybe two.
Stephanie Plum move over for slapstick with brains
I am in love with the entire Vicki Bliss series. I picked up one by accident, when I was desperate to hear something new. The series is a little dated as it was written quite a few years ago, but is fresh, funny and just all around good entertainment.

The narrator demonstrated the emotions of the interesting and intriguing story. At times some of thr relationships were a little complex.

This reader is not appropriate for the joanna Brady series. Consistency in performance is recommended but if that's impossible a reader should at least be familiar with the way to pronounce proper names.

    Flawless!
I've rated everything I've ever downloaded from Audible and this is only the second time I've given a 5 Star (the previous being a Jules Verne classic from 150 years ago!). Perhaps it's because I related to the novel's elements so much: Once upon a time I was a Foreign Exhange Trader; a Cafe Barrista; and have spent many, many nights in Amsterdam!
"The Coffee Trader" is one of those super-rare stories which sticks in my head long after listening to it on my morning & evening work commutes. I've had to snap myself out of a daze at work many mornings after listening to this on the way in. I noticed I was counting down the hours till closing time so I could hear what would happen to Miguel next!
David Liss' tale has it all: lust, greed, envy, humor, tension, you name it. Grind some dark roast beans; take a deep sip; and transport yourself to 17th Century Holland for a few hours. It'll be a journey you won't soon forget!
    exciting history of trade
Go back into the 1600's with this exciting tale of trade, intrigue, the crazy quilt of Amsterdam and the aftermath of the Inquisition. Great book, read by the incomparable David Lee
    A fantastic listen
I really enjoyed both the story and the reader. Every now and then I choose an audio book that makes me wish for long commutes and more traffic, and The Coffee Trader is that kind of book. The story was interesting and the author's believable accents add to the drama and fun of the story. Very highly recommended!
    Enjoyable
I enjoyed this book about Jews in Holland several hundred years ago. The main character had so many problems that I began to worry about what the ending might be, but was pleasantly surprised. The reader was excellent, as well. I recommend this book.

This Kellerman novel focuses on Cindy Decker, Peter's daughter, who has been in the LAPD for 2 years. There are at least 2 plots, as usual with Kellerman, plus the great personal and family involvement that makes her books such enjoyable reads. Good narrator, also.

Assaulted by the bitter cold of a Montreal winter, the American-born Dr. Temperance Breman, Forensic Anthropologist for the Province of Quebec, digs for a corpse where Sister Elisabeth Nicolet, dead over a century and now a candidate for sainthood, should lie in her grave. A strange, small coffin, buried in the recesses of a decaying church, holds the first clue to the cloistered nun's fate. The puzzle surrounding Sister Elisabeth's life and death provides a welcome contrast to discoveries at a burning chalet, where scorched and twisted bodies await Tempe's professional expertise. Who were these people? What brought them to this gruesome fate? Homicide Detective Andrew Ryan, with whom Tempe has a combustive history, joins her in the arson investigation. From the fire scene they are drawn into the worlds of an enigmatic and controversial professor, a mysterious commune, and a primate colony on a Carolina island. Featuring the kind of forensic detail that only Kathy Reichs can provide - from skeletal reconstruction to insect analysis - Death du Jour takes the listener on a riveting journey from the morgue to the lab to the crime scene, from the warmth of barrier island to the frigid cold of a deadly ice storm. so bad i had to write
For anyone who enjoyed the author's first Tempe Brennan story, Deja Dead, prepare yourself for a big disappointment on all fronts. First, narration: Tremendously inferior to the previous book; this narrator's Tempe has a very narrow range -- either monotone boredom or caustic bitchiness. Second, production quality: I usually stay away from abridged versions just for the sake of completeness, but can't recall noticing any glaring technical problems when listening to other abridged books. This one, however, is so poorly produced that you can actually hear the horribly executed cuts, and the difference in audio quality from one part to the next. Editing was so bad that one murder victim who is supposedly part of the "whole" picture, is only mentioned at the end of the story, leaving the listener to wonder, "WHO? How did I miss that one?" Lastly, the story was weak. But, giving the author the benefit of the doubt, perhaps the story would have seemed a bit more solid in its entirety, given the aforementioned editing problems. Somehow I don't think so.
    pretty good
At first the reader's voice drove me nuts but you'll get used to it pretty fast. It has a good storyline and it's really easy to get drawn in to the book. I'd definitely recomend purchasing this audio book.
I'm Really Tired of Her Whining
Patricia Cornwall went down this road and now Kathy Reichs is doing the same thing. A single, intelligent, professional woman canNOT have any kind of relationship with anyone but her daughter. It's impossible for her to ask for anyone's help, so she gets into no end of trouble.
