"Rankin's brilliant evocation of a moody Edinburgh, deeply human characters and labyrinthine plot give dimension to this always absorbing series....Readers won't be able to skim this dark, densely written novel, but they won't want to." (

    Good Rebus book
If you like Rebus, you'll like this book. As the first Rebus book I've heard, it took me a while to get into the story, but was well worth the patience. The characters are nicely flawed and interesting and the story is quite enthralling as well.
The narrator was solid with the accents, but some of the different voices I found a bit irritating, thankfully these were just sideline characters.
The last few hours I couldn't stop listening, quite suspenseful, although the impetus for the murders I found a bit stretched. Try Naming of the Dead as well.
    Gotta love Rebus
I read my first Rebus mystery - The Black Book -quite by accident - just happened to pick it up in a Borders. As I was reading it I saw Rankin on a travel show so I got visual a flavor - as it were - of the Edinburgh of Rebus. The Falls is a wonderful listen. It is inticate and all the various lines in the story not only work, but make the story more plausible. Rebus is a Scot of Hamish Macbeth's ilk - only MUCH more sophisticated. Like Maura, I was so entralled in the last few hours that I literally couldn't put down my earphones. I highly recommend this book to fans of Rebus and those who might like to try a new and compelling character and author.
    Inspector Rebus at his Best!
The Falls starts off with a bang and goes on from there. Ian Rankin's Charactor needs no previous introduction, as this outing needs no prologue or charactor intros. It's fast paced and written as a stand alone or as part of a series. It does well either way.
From beginning to end, "The Falls" keeps the reader on the edge of his seat. Excellent read & narration. A great book for any library!
    really loved it
I really liked this novel. The characters are really well drawn and vivid. Rebus in particular really grows on one, and seems like a real person with all of the faults of one. The setting of Scotland is great. I am not sure why I am not giving this 5 stars. I guess some of the plot seemed pretty contrived and some of the modern internet stuff seemed off. But it kept my attention. I guess I would say that Ian Rankin and Rebus are not quite up there with Michael Connelly and Andrew Vachss, and maybe they are a push with Lee Child (although very different) and maybe with Robert Crais, but they are really good dectective noir stuff.
    enjoyed my latest Rebus
I enjoyed this one as much as the other REbus novels I've read and I've enjoyed them all a lot. The crime story in each is interesting but what I really enjoy is the life story of DCI Rebus and those that intertwine his life; his colleagues, his friends, his antagonists and even teh crimianls. The Scottish setting also adds a bit of spice and makes me want to visit Scotland, Edinburgh, and even the Oxfor Bar.

    Enjoyable Listen
I've read books by Rankin before and enjoyed them. This one did not disappoint me either. Just the right mix of amusing and serious story lines. I also enjoyed the narrator. I'm no expert on accents, but i thought he provided a perfect voice for Rebus. I'll definitely download more of the series. For reference, other authors I've enjoyed recently on audio include John Sandford and Daniel Silva. (If you've read those authors too, you can tell if we have similar tastes.)
NOT Ian Rankin at his best
If you have never heard any of the books by Ian Rankin which feature Detective Inspector John Rebus, please do yourself the favor of starting with some of the more recent books. Then, if you want to work backwards I think you will be surprised to see how much Rankin's writing and character development improved over the years. I did not enjoy this book and would have never bought another Rebus book had I not begun with a later release but listen repeatedly to later selections. I'm so sorry the series has ended with the book Exit Music !
I keep trying to like Rebus
What did you like best about Tooth and Nail? What did you like least?
I really want to like Rebus novels because there are so many of them and I would love to discover an appealing series. I just don't like the character Rebus.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
    Replace the hero.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
    No
    Worth it for Rebus's London
The best thing about "Tooth and Nail" is the chance to see London through John Rebus's bemused eyes. Rankin has fun skewering some of the sillier and more self-inflated aspects of the English capital circa 1990and London attitudes toward their Scottish neighborsbut gives due props to the city's vitality and variety as well. The next best thing is Rebus's London colleague, Inspector George Flight, and his interaction with Rebus; but then in the early Rankin mysteries I've read so far Rebus's collegial relations are a lot more engaging than his love interests. As for the plot... well, I can't say I found the psychology of the serial killer here very convincing, and the killer's internal monologues are pretty excruciating to have to listen to, but Rankin does a nice job of throwing red herrings in the reader's path to figuring out who it is.
Narrator Samuel Gillies is English and does a fine job with the London characters, but his voicing is too plummy for my taste and he has to work too hard at Rebus's Edinburgh accent to make him entirely convincing.
    Rebus in London
Ian Rankin is brilliant! The quality of the writing in this series makes Rebus a set of must-read books.
Rebus out of his element in London is funny at times and seriously somber at others. We get to see Sammy as a 16 year old with the troubles that alone can bring.

    Poor Plotting - Rather Ridiculous
What did you like best about Dead Simple? What did you like least?
Starts off OK - prank gone wrong. Will the groom live? Tell me, if you were trapped in a confined space with a cell phone fearing for your life who would you call? Hold on... you also have a walkie-talkie - and someone on the other end. Many people in fact.... So why, are you still stuck in your confined space. BECAUSE you decided to carry on a conversation with someone rather than dial 999 or 911 and get the heck out of your box. Really?! Hate it when writers don't follow through on their promise to create well thought out plots. This one goes from just poorly planned plotting to just silly. Look elsewhere if you want a great story, if you can get this one cheap and are willing to accept these failures sit back and enjoy - just keep an open mind.
What do you think your next listen will be?
Macbeth: A Novel by David Hewson, A. Hartley
    Which scene was your favorite?
    -
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
    Nope
Great potential but came up short
The story started out great but was disappointing. Weak one dimensional characters. Lame dialogue. Narrator could not do anything but male British accent.
    Good story
This was a very good book with a real twist. Will get more of his books.
Weak plot not helped by psychic interventions
Potentially a fascinating plot but ruined for me by the substitution of a psychic whenever the author couldn't work out the next bit of plot. Good crime fiction must have credibility but over reliance on this device undermined the whole thing. I'd need convincing to read any more of this series.
simple story. abridged version not great.
narrator isnt great which doesnt help a simple plot and basic writing style. you csn tell its an early book.

    Critic Reviews:
"The prolific best-selling author keeps the reader involved through some rather fantastic plot turns." (Library Journal)
    Members Reviews:
    Boring
This was unnecessarily graphic in inappropriate places. It lacked excitement and was (except for the dog), a boring, drawn out, uneventful waste of time. The voice of the reader did not add much to the story. This was not a tale, but a passing acknowledgement of something that took place that could have been summed up in 1 sentence. I listened to the end, but the story never redeemed itself in my estimation.
    Too much
Interesting, but too many characters and subplots for a audiobook. Not a great narration and the characters are hard to tell apart audibly. Overall, the book is a decent way to pass time, but the climax is frustrating as it's not built up to.
    Bad Story
This author was recommended to me. The story had a lot of dialogue and very little action. On top of that, nothing was solved. They weren't even close. The killer is self revealed and was never suspected. I couldn't wait for this long winded story to be over.
    GREAT BOOK
Unable to stop listening. Well written and we'll narrated. I will definitely continue this series.
    Great story
Wonderful read with great twist. Always enjoy Dr. Delaware's adventures! Can't wait to read another.

    Publisher's Summary:
Isabel is drawn into an investigation of the facts behind the transplant, with disturbing results. Her enquiries take time, but not so much time as to prevent romantic entanglements, both for Isabel and her housekeeper, Grace. And as for chocolate: that proves to have some very interesting philosophical ramifications, at least in the mind of Isabel Dalhousie. Chocolate is a moral problem, invoking questions of temptation and, of course, human weakness. We are all weak when it comes to chocolate, Isabel decides. Should we just accept the fact and get on with it?
    Critic Reviews:

Friends, Lovers, Chocolate made me smile
I just loved this audiobook. Friends, Lovers, Chocolate is the 2nd in the series and it didn't disappoint. A lovely listening experience for those who love the gentler side of life with a mystery thrown in. The voice of the reader and the interspersed music were excellent and gave the story life. I'm looking forward to the next one.
    A wealth of thoughtful entertainment.
The gentle inquisitions Isabelle applies to every aspect of her life make this entertaining tale a pleasure to listen to. Well read by Phyllis Logan: all the characters come to life and we feel for Isabelle as her developing friendship with James disturbs old wounds. My only complaint is that I cannot enjoy the entire series unabridged from Audible, as I am now intent on finding out what Isabelle and James will get up to next.
    Great story, beautifully read
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I have started on this series having read all the Ladies Detective books and almost all the Scotland Street. This book did not disappoint and I have immediately bought the next episode. Isabel Dalhousie is a great character and I'm looking forward to hearing her development. By far the best thing about this book though is the narration by Phyllis Logas (Mrs Hughes in Downton Abbey) who has such a beautiful lilting reading voice. I hope she is narrating some of the others too. I would therefore recommend it to anyone.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Friends, Lovers, Chocolate?
    Isabel meeting the donor's mother.
Which character as performed by Phyllis Logan was your favourite?
    Isabel Dalhousie
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Again, the mothers describing the loss of their sons.
    Any additional comments?
As with the Scotland Street books, Edinburgh is an additional character,

    Critic Reviews:

    Members Reviews:
    Close but not cigar
I really wanted to like McGarrity's stories but they just don't have an ending,,, except that he stops writing.
The characters are engaging (if a little two dimensional) but the crime (in this case anyway) is convoluted and unlikely.
George Guidall is the saving grace. His performance let me give this book more stars than I would have without him.
I think this is my 3rd McGarrity book but there won't be a fourth. I'm truly sorry Mr. McGarrity -- I really did try.
Loved the narration but the rest was just a saga
The book was entertaining. But the ending was very weak, and it rambled on with the character after character. I enjoyed it up to a point but felt as if the plot was almost nonexistent. I LOVE Guidall and that is the only reason I picked it up and even listened to it all. was a little disappointed.
    A very fine listening experience
George Guidall is such a wonderful narrator, plus he seems to capture the essence of the person is in the book.
    Great plot as usual
If you could sum up Slow Kill in three words, what would they be?
Excellent plot that really details how official police work takes place and integrating the usually interesting characters that McGarrity describes.
What other book might you compare Slow Kill to and why?
I compare all of McGarrity's books about Kevin Kearney and his family. I also compare Ace Atkins Ranger series.
What about George Guidalls performance did you like?
Well, I can't say enough about Guidall's performance and his ability to get me into the story and love the characters. I listened to him in the Longmire series and he is at his best in stories about the west.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I'm always fascinate with McGarrity's awesome descriptions of the New Mexico landscape which is obviously a beloved locale. But, then he takes us elsewhere with equally descriptive settings that I can easily visualize.
    Any additional comments?
I hope I get to find out more about some of the characters that he introduces, but I am almost finished with the series. I will miss Kevin Kearney and all his funny, interesting, quirky, police buddies. However, I am hoping to get to know his son Patrick as he grows up and more than likely enters law enforcement.
    great mystery
Mcgarrity writes a good mystry. I really enjoyed this story. It has lots of twists.

    Sad it's over
I've enjoyed all the Shane Scully books and have to admit getting a little bit "misty eyed" at the end of this one. After several books, you get to know the characters so well. I hope there are more to come. And as always, Scott Brick is unmatchable!
    His characters are like family
Another excellent book by Stephen Cannell. This one I wish I could see on the big screen or as a DVD. The character John Bodine was hilarious. This book confirmed why I love reading books audibly unabridged. There is just no way you can get the appreciation of a character like John Bodine without the right dialect/diction. I got emotional in some parts. Scott Brick is an excellent reader. I highly recommend this book to Scully fans.

    Definently worth your credit
I've listened to as many Stephen Cannell novels as possible and they never disappoint. There is a real sense of emotion between the characters and the reader/listener. I found myself enjoying this book even more than Michael Connelly's latest few works. Yes there are several implausible situations but they work to make the story have a dimension that would otherwise be just another detective novel. I find myself thinking of this story weeks after finishing it. It is well written and Scott Brick's talents are in full array. You can't ask for a better author/narrator team. If you are a fan of detective novels this is definitely worth a credit.
    Another great book
I listened back-to-back to about 4 of the Shane Scully series so by the end of this one I was totally hooked. Cannell does a great job of evolving characters. The character of John Bodine was a bit over the top but added great color and humor - which was sometimes needed. I'm anxious for Audible to get the next Shane Scully book. As always, Scott Brick does a great job narrating and is my #1 audio book narrator.

I now want to buy the rest of her books and read them all
    MY FAVORITE "cozy mystery" series!!
I am in the process of obtaining ALL of the "Cat Who" series on audio. This task is a bit difficult because Audible does not have all of them, nor does my library. For anyone who is not aware of this series, I will say this: LJB began writing this series in 1966. The last book was written in 2007, I believe. To my knowledge, there are 31 books in the series, but don't quote me on that! It's very light reading/listening. One of those series where you get to "know" the characters and can't wait to get into the next book. LJB wrote with absolutely NO undesirable language, and when a murder occurs, there are no gory details. George Guidall IS James Qwilleran. (To me, anyway!) Even when I listen to him narrate another book, I associate him with J.Q.
It's fun to listen to the series in order, (the first book being "The Cat Who Could Read Backwards"), but it's not absolutely necessary.
This is not an exciting series - if you like your mysteries to have excitement and gore and obscenities, I would predict you would be bored with the "Cat Who" books.
WOW, George Guidall brings it all to life
What did you love best about The Cat Who Came to Breakfast?
I have read all the cat books and must say that the audio versions are even better than the books, especially with Guidall as the reader. Just makes me understand the characters better hearing his interpretation.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Not really, this is light reading, cute and fun
What about George Guidalls performance did you like?
He nails the lead character and actually makes him much more likeable
    Gotta love those cats
Interesting lives to follow, clean language. Always keeps my interest to the end. Smart cats make the story.
An excellent "Cat Who" story as always
I have never been able to get enough of these wonderful stories from 400 miles north of everywhere. George Guidall is easily my favorite narrator and is the perfect fit for the adventures of Mr.

Kate, lost in grief, is found by Jim Chopin
"Midnight Come Again" opens like a Tom Clancy novel with a rogue Russian military unit killing people in an armed robbery in Moscow.
It was well written and intriguing but it left me with one big question: where is Kate Shugak?
I'm fairly sure this is the reaction that Dana Stabenow expected me to have as this is the question the whole novel sets out to answer.
The events in most of this novel are not seen from Kate's point of view but from Jim Chopin's. Jim has been asking around the Park to see if anyone knows where Kate is. No-one has any information for him but they all expect him to bring her back. Jim's search is cut short when he is sent undercover, working with the FBI to try and find a high-profile Russian crime boss who is thought to be in port. By chance, his assignment brings him face to face with Kate.
The Kate he meets is not the Kate Shugak I knew in the first nine books. She has literally vanished. Kate cannot or will not face that she is alive and Jack Morgan is dead. She has left her home, her friends and even her name behind. She is lost in guilt and grief and anger. Yet she does not curl up in a corner or dive into a bottle. She works, hard and long, mastering new tasks running an air-taxi/freight service. Kate shapes how the world she works in is organized because she doesn't know how NOT to do that. She works because work is better than having time to think and much, much better than having time to feel. Kate has a job but she doesn't really have a life. This seems to have been her goal: to be "the working dead".
Her meeting with Jim Chopin begins events that will force her out of the Hide she has built for herself. She becomes embroiled in the case and she becomes angry at Jim. It seemed to me that she rages at him because he is full of life and he will not let her deny her own life.
The plot in "Midnight Come Again" is strong, relatively complex and darker than some of the other books.

Police chief Jeffrey Tolliver, Sara's ex-husband, is in charge of the investigation, and when a second victim is found, crucified, only a few days later, he has to face the fact that Sibyl's murder wasn't a single personal attack. They're dealing with a sadistic rapist-turned-killer who is terrorizing rural Grant County.
Jeffrey isn't alone in his search. Lena Adams, the county's sole female detective, wants to see justice done since her sister was the first victim. Sara, too, cannot escape the terror. A secret from her past could hold the key to finding the killer, unless he finds her first.
    Critic Reviews:
"Judith Ivey's expressive narration does full justice to the story....It's easy to listen to and hard to turn off." (AudioFile)
"Wildly readable....A bull's-eye, deftly crafted, damnably suspenseful and, in the end, deadly serious....Slaughter's plotting is brilliant, her suspense relentless." (The Washington Post)

    Narator's southern drawl . . .
I enjoyed the storyline, but had problems with the naration. Judith Ivey's southern drawl made all of the men in this book come across as nitwits. This distracted from the story, for me.
This is the second book I've listened to by Karin Slaughter. I've enjoyed her stories. I will continue to listen to others of her books.
Horribly graphic rape scenes ruined the book.
Would you listen to Blindsighted again? Why?
No. The story went along pretty good with a surprise as to who the killer/rapist was but the rape scenes were so graphic that I would never recommend it for reading.
What was most disappointing about Karin Slaughters story?
    The graphic rape scenes.
What about Judith Iveys performance did you like?
    Very good.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes, except for the rape scenes. the last one was especially hard to read.
    Any additional comments?
This would be a pretty good story except for the graphic rape scenes. They were very disturbing.
    Predictable but good read
The narration of this book was excellent and the book was definitely suspenseful. However, I figured out pretty early on who "done it." It seemed fairly obvious to me. For that reason, I don't think I'll continue to read her other books.
    Performance killed it...
Would you try another book from Karin Slaughter and/or Judith Ivey?
I would definitely try another book by Karin Slaughter, but I really did not care for Judith Ivey's performance. She made Dr. Sara Linton sound much older than she is, at least in my opinion.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Sara is one of my favorite characters, though Lena is also very interesting! I've read The Grant County Series, The Will Trent Series, and The Georgia Series, and Sara is favorite in each! Just the trials that she's had to overcome and her doing so successfully makes her one of my favorite characters!
How did the narrator detract from the book?
I felt that the narrator made Sara sound much older than she should have been. I really didn't care for any of it, which is a shame as this is a great book, one of my favorites in fact!
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
    Yes!!
    Any additional comments?
Initially,I thought that this was unabridged. It wasn't until after I purchased the book that I realized that it was the abridged version.
