    Title: P is for Peril
    Subtitle: A Kinsey Millhone Mystery
    Author: Sue Grafton
    Narrator: Judy Kaye
    Format: Abridged
    Length: 6 hrs
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-07-01
    Publisher: Random House AudioBooks
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 41 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
It wasn't Crystal who called Kinsey. It was Purcell's ex-wife, Fiona. Everything about their meeting made Kinsey uneasy. Fiona's manner was high-handed and her expectations unrealistic. Kinsey's instincts told her to refuse the job, yet she ended up saying, "I'll do what I can, but I make no promises." It was a decision she'd live to regret.
Pursuing the mysterious disappearance of Purcell, Kinsey crashes into a wall of speculation. It seems everyone has a theory. The cops think he went on a bender and is too ashamed to come home. Fiona is sure he ran off to get away from Crystal, and Crystal is just as sure he's dead. The staff at the nursing home is convinced he's been kidnapped, and one of his daughters, having consulted a psychic, is certain that he's trapped in a dark place, though she doesn't know where. Kinsey is awash in explanations and sorely lacking in facts. Then pure chance leads her in another direction, and she soon finds herself in a dangerous shadow land, where duplicity and double-dealing are the reality and, with the truth glinting elusively out of reach, she must stake her life on a thin thread of intuition.

"Unlike many detective series, Grafton's seems only to get better each time out." (Entertainment Weekly)

    Always good
Sue Grafton never fails to have an enticing ending. She has sculpted her character, Kinsey Millhone, into a friend of the reader. You can't help but learn to love her particular characteristics that make her so real. She fills her with real feelings we might all have or at least know someone with the same character flaws, inhibitions, dogged determinations and reflections of others do easy to relate to. And she winds these stories so effortlessly around Kinsey's personality traits, keeping us all either waiting in breathless concern or scratching our heads, pondering as Kinsey does as to the next step to take in her search for the truth.
    What?
I did not get an ending...just a lot of questions. It was like someone forgot to put the last chapter in before printing.
    Back with Kinsey, et al
Happily, I've gone along with Kinsey Millhone on her previous A through O adventures, so I always know the parameters of what I'm in for with her. She's in a business we find interesting, even exciting, but most of us prefer to journey with her from our comfy armchairs or couches---she gets into perilous scrapes in every book---but better her than any of us.
PERIL's basic plot revolves around Kinsey's investigation into the disappearance of a prominent doctor, the owner of a facility for the elderly. She sets about methodically questioning the ex-wife, current wife, wayward daughter and baby-factory daughter, significant others, and various nursing home personnel. She tries to get a handle on whether or not the doctor absconded to free himself form his current morass of financial and personal difficulties, or if he is indeed dead.
An intriguing secondary plot has her getting new office space, a new love interest, and opening up an unsolved murder/arson case. It's always good to get back to the cast of regulars in Kinsey's life---Henry, her landlord, especially.

    Top Notch
Summer of the Dragon is a terrific early Elizabeth Peters mystery/romance. It doesn't feature any of her popular recurring characters, but stands on its own very nicely. It is funny from beginning to end. The heroine is very likeable. Like so many Peters stories, this one does a great job of dealing with interesting and believable archaeological/anthropological topics in a very accessible way. The quick-moving and enjoyable dialogue combined with the heroine's down-to-earth voice make everything easy to follow and very fun. Also, this reader does a wonderful job (but for mixing up a word or two in a briefly confusing but not really disruptive way); I thought she really captured the characters without overdoing it. Be prepared that some elements of the story are a bit dated (for example, our heroine gets some flack for being a "feminist," apparently because she is pursuing a Ph.D. and a job) but after all the book was written in 1979.
    She does not disappoint!
Fun, informative, just a tad dated....but it was written in the 70's. This was a fun romp through the hot southwest of the US. I enjoyed all the characters, especially Hank. Ms Peters books are where I go when I want to listen and laugh and care about how everything turns out.....no tears allowed!
    Entertaining, but poorly read
The story is entertaining enough - a typical Elizabeth Peters, with a heroine who is gutsy and outspoken (bordering on rude, even), a love interest, and interesting archaeological detail. However, the reader is annoying. She seems to be trying for a 1940s, Humphrey Bogart kind of noir effect, which doesn't make sense for the book. If you are a real Elizabeth Peters fan, you can probably overlook the reader's odd inflection and choice of emphasis. Otherwise, you might want to give this one a miss.
    always good and entertaining
Elizabeth Peters is always good. Never a dull moment, characters are great...
    love her.
the narrator is very good as well.
    Look Elsewhere
I bought this book because I so enjoy Elizabeth Peter's Amelia Peabody series. However, what I got was a plot, which you get to it five hours into the book, that was weak, and the only interesting action happened two hours before the novel completed. All else was uninteresting dialogue and a woman talking nonstop about eating. The narrator made an banal novel worse by her monotone, expressionless reading. If you are looking for a good read, look elsewhere. If I had bought this book first, I would never have read her other series.

    Before I Say Good-Bye
The book is great as ususal by this author. We listen to audio books for relaxation. The narrator has a speech impediment and as much as I hate to say, this makes the experience quit annoying.
    Clark Getting Stale?
I have always loved Mary Higgins Clark stories, but this one was a dissappointment. A shade predictable, a little too drawn out, too many diversionary characters that added little to the plot... It just did not hold my interest like her stories first did.
    Enjoyable Read
This was a great story, I like how the author writes all the little details in. She does the research & it makes her writing that much better. The narrator does a good job but sometimes she changes her voice not quite with the character who's suppose to be speaking. Great storyline.
    Intriguing Story!
This is comparable to all of MHC works that I have read. Concise, interesting and not too predictable. Would recommend it for a light read.

My name is Dr. Adeline Glen. Due to a genetic condition, I cant feel pain. I never have. I never will.
The last thing Boston Detective D. D. Warren remembers is walking the crime scene after dark. Then, a creaking floorboard, a low voice crooning in her ear... She is later told she managed to discharge her weapon three times. All she knows is that she is seriously injured, unable to move her left arm, unable to return to work.
My sister is Shana Day, a notorious murderer who first killed at fourteen. Incarcerated for thirty years, she has now murdered more people while in prison than she did as a free woman.
Six weeks later, a second woman is discovered murdered in her own bed, her room containing the same calling cards from a previous crime scene: a bottle of champagne and a single red rose. The only person who may have seen the killer: Detective D. D. Warren, who still cant lift her child, load her gun, or recall a single detail from the night that may have cost her everything.
Our father was Harry Day, an infamous serial killer who buried young women beneath the floor of our home. He has been dead for forty years. Except the Rose Killer knows things about my father he shouldnt. My sister claims she can help catch him. I think just because I cant feel pain doesnt mean my family cant hurt me.
D.D. may not be back on the job, but she is back on the hunt. Because the Rose Killer isnt just targeting lone women, he is targeting D.D. And D.D. knows there is only one way to take him down:Fear nothing.

This Review Needs A Title...So, I Gave it One
A rare recessive genetic freak of nature Dr Adeline Glen not only had the inability to feel physical pain she was also the product of a psychopathic torturer/serial killer. Unusual suspects, Great suspense. The book is written from three POV's - Dr Adeline Glen, Detective D.D. Warren and the killer. The killer wasn't revealed until the end; the routes we traveled to get there were twisty.
    Loved it!
What made the experience of listening to Fear Nothing the most enjoyable?
It held my interest all the way through without lagging.
What did you like best about this story?
    The suspense.
What does Kirsten Potter bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Kirsten Potter is the perfect D.D. Warren. She makes you feel the character.
    Weirdly Good!
Would you consider the audio edition of Fear Nothing to be better than the print version?
I don't know. I only listened to the Audio version.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Adeline was a great character because she was different. She couldn't feel pain and the author did a great job developing the character. I also liked how Adeline was the narrator of the book.
    Which scene was your favorite?
The climax scene at the end of the book was the best.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
    The end.
    Lisa & Kirsten
Gardner's D.D. Warren is a welcome and relatable portrayal, read by Kirsten Potter: the rare specimen that is an actually-enjoyable narrator. The combination means that I am successfully hooked.
    Not up to par!
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
Better story line. Horrible story. Too wordy. Sick book.

    Publisher's Summary:
New York Times best-selling author Linda Fairstein returns with a ripped-from-the-headlines thriller that takes Alexandra Cooper into the dark underside of New York Citys most storied restaurants and a murder case spanning continents.
In her 13 best sellers, Linda Fairstein has taken millions of fans inside sinister worlds that most of us cant even imagine. Thanks to her extensive experience as a New York City prosecutor, she creates situations that are stunning for both their compulsive readability and their authenticity. Taking Alexandra Cooper into the fascinating world of New York Citys most beloved and storied restaurants, Night Watch continues her tradition of breathtaking suspense storytelling.
Forty-eight hours after Alexandra Cooper arrives in France to visit her boyfriend, the famed restaurateur Luc Rouget, her vacation in paradise is cut short when a young woman from the village is found murdered. The only evidence discovered on the body is one of Lucs matchboxes promoting his new restaurant in New York. But before the investigation begins, Alex is summoned back to New York to handle a high profile case.
Mohammed Gil-Darsin, the distinguished and wealthy Head of the World Economic Bureau, has been arrested and accused of attacking a maid in his hotel. As the world watches in fascination to see how the scandal will unfold, Alex finds her attention torn between preparing the alleged victim to testify and a murder case with ties too close to home. A second body is found with Lucs matchbox - this time in Brooklyn - and Alex begins to fear that the two cases may not be as unrelated as she thought, and that uncovering the sordid secrets of the citys most wealthy and powerful could cost her and her loved ones everything they hold dear.

    Well worth a credit!
In fact I have nominated Night Watch for my Book Club, and I feel sure it will generate a great deal of discussion, both around the book and the broader issues of abuse.
I found the book to be quite gripping, awfully credible and was engrossed right through to the end. Excellent narration helped. The unfolding of the story provided an insight into controlling and abusive behaviours and to the almost inevitable effects, both short and long-term on the victim and others in her orbit.
There are good lessons for us all in being more observant of others' health and well-being and providing support where it is (rather obviously, in this case) needed.
    An excellent listen.
    The beginning of the end?
This series has always been a comfort read for me. Alex is a grown-up Nancy Drew and because they're so formulaic, I always know what to expect and Alex has a charmed life (well aside from the occasional murdered friend) that is fun to peek in on. One aspect I do like is the NYC history info that is peppered throughout. This time though, it was info-dump overload! Restaurant regulation info. The Paris Catacombs. French drug-running. African art. Wine buying. 21's secret rooms. Wine storage. Ugh! It was too much. Way too much. And please find Alex's spine, Ms. Fairstein. I think she lost it. Maybe it's at the Vineyard or maybe in France or maybe even in the drawer of pantyhose and deodorant in her office, but wherever it is, please give it back to her. If she wasn't a stunned puppy she was blubbering or being confused and snippy. She was hysterical most of the time. Or horny. Or both. Oy.

    Victoria's best book EVER!
This book is the most serious, well-written, frightening book ever written by Victoria Laurie. I highly recommend this book. It is the most mature storyline attempted by this author. It is a well executed ghost story with an underlying serious subject matter.
While there are still some comic scenes in the book, the majority of the story is serious, sentimental and brilliantly written. MJ goes home to Georgia on vacation with Heath and Gilley. There MJ meets her father's new fiancé and finds her father to be happy, loving and content in his new life. The fiancé is a delightful person. Of course the vacation is interrupted by the most destructive, personal fiends that the ghost hunters have ever come across. This book make me laugh, cry and enjoy every single word.
    Another good installment
Very good story that was well told. I still like the Psychic Eye series better (easier to suspend disbelief). Still, who doesn't like a good ghost story?
    Fan of the series
I'm a huge fan of the series and this was an interesting one as they all generally are. It made me laugh and cry and I loved every minute of it. Thank you Victoria Laurie for sharing your wonderful gift of story telling! I can't wait for the next one :)
    Another great story
Overall another fun adventure for MJ and the gang. Enjoyed listening to every moment and looking forward to the next one.
No ghouls but there is whining
I enjoy this series but she is putting to much internalized dithering about too many things .
The males in the story are great and gilley and Heath balance .

    Good read
Once again Lorelei King does justice to a fun Evanovich book.
    Great Fun...
I enjoy a good laugh and a fast read. Putting down Evanovich's "Plum" series is just not an option. Reading or listening, it's all good.
    Not her best
I felt this one was short of her excellance. She spent too much time on the minor caractures than on the regulars, Grandma and Ranger.
    Fearless Fourteen

A fun story with lots of intrigue
This is the latest book in a series. The characters are interesting, particularly the formidable Vera. The heroine is a little too earnest, but other than that, I really enjoyed the story.
    Great book and great recording.
I love this series and this is my favorite so far. I can't wait to hear the next one.
    Another hit!
I love this series so much! All the characters are lovable & the narration of the Senora & Vera are my favorite! Kev is up to mischief as always & Jordan is trying to juggle her family on top of being set up to take the blame for a murder. This was a fun adventure & as always a real treat for this series!
Not bad, the ending kinda lost me
Perhaps I was too sleepy by the end but it got a little complex trying to keep up with what was going on and very complex and that's my only critique. Judge for yourself.
However, I do love a mystery where I'm given enough clues and I didn't even guess the antagonist!
Except for the intricate and slow ending (may just have been because I was falling asleep) this is in keeping with their other engaging and well performed books.
    Potentially good story
I think the narrator missed opportunities to present better characterizations and paused too long for my tastes. I also prefer my heroines to be more realistic.... receiving dead roses would make me suspicious, not joyously curious. Not sure if I will try this author again.

    Fun read
Being from KY and specifically Lexington (as mentioned in the book) I find this book to be so true of small towns and how they react to outsiders.
Had fun reading and look forward to reading the next book.
This is a great book to listen to on vacation!
I did so by the pool and chuckled so hard many times.
    Really liked this book
Too Stupid in Life to Live
She can do a great job of trash to treasures and I did enjoy that portion, but didn't much like this chic...just kept waiting for her to die.
    disapointing
What disappointed you about Murder at Honeysuckle Hotel?
hang a homemade sign that says hotel and you,re in business? the state might have something to say about that. Did you really get a degree?
What was most disappointing about Rose Presseys story?
this character is too stupid to live. she doesn't seem to know anything about anything
What three words best describe Margie Lenharts performance?
    nice, enthusiastic
What character would you cut from Murder at Honeysuckle Hotel?
the townspeople. I'm originally from a small town, but most of us were nice, ordinary people - the people in this town - all of them - are nasty.

What with supplying a movie set with vintage clothes from her store, an additional ghost and 2 guys interested in her, plus a murder to solve.
