    Publisher's Summary:
Trying to escape her overbearing mother, vintage kitchenware enthusiast and soon-to-be columnist Jaymie Leighton retreats to her family's cottage on Heartbreak Island. While there she hopes to write an article about the Ice House restaurant, owned by good friends and neighbors, siblings Ruby and Garnet Redmond. Once an actual icehouse, the restaurant is charmingly decorated with antique tools of the trade, including a collection of ice picks.
One night, while working on her article, Jaymie overhears an argument and, ever the sleuth, sets out to explore. But when she stumbles upon a dead body her blood runs cold. It's Urban Dobrinskie, whose feud with the Redmonds is no secret, and he's got an ice pick through his heart. Now Jaymie's got to sharpen her sleuthing skills to chip away at the mystery and prove her neighbors' innocence - before someone else gets picked off ...

    Vintage kitchen tools and mystery
On Michigan's boarder with Canada, Jaymie Leighton is enjoying her vintage cottage on Heartbreak Island. She definitely needed a break from her mom, whom she loves but drives her batty at times. She's trying to write her first article to start her blog on vintage tools, and old updated food recipes. She's chosen to write about her friends old Ice House that's been turned into a restaurant. But when a vintage ice pick turns up in the body of a local man, found in Jaymie's yard, some arguments and abuses seem to point to a number of Jaymie's friends, and she starts sleuthing again.
Confusing all her efforts are the squabbles between Jaymie's mom and her new rich boyfriend's mom over the annual family dinner that Jaymie's parents have always celebrated at their cottage. Redoing a drainage system has left a mess in their yard so why not have it at the lovely cottage of the boyfriend's parents. Trying to compromise between the mom's is becoming as difficult as finding who left a body in her yard. Then add in the cute detective on the case, and Jaymie has lots more to handle than her growing vintage kitchen tools collection.
This third book in the vintage kitchen series, is definitely the best one yet, or maybe it's just that the characters in these books are growing close to my heart. I enjoy the discussion of the connection between this part of Michigan and Canada, and the shared holidays. Personalities and problems seem very realistic, and I find myself rooting more and more for Jaymie and one particular man. The mysteries are always solid and developed with good clues. I listened to this on Audible and really liked the narration.
    Great book
Jaymie Leighton is staying at her familys cottage on Heartbreak Island while some repairs are being made and she is writing an article. One night, while working on her article, Jaymie overhears an argument and, ever the sleuth, sets out to explore. Of course, she stumbles upon a dead body and is compelled to investigate. The romantic storyline is more defined and Jaymie will have to make a decision soon. I enjoyed this book just as I enjoyed the previous ones in the series.

    Title: No Man's Nightingale
    Subtitle: An Inspector Wexford Novel
    Author: Ruth Rendell
    Narrator: Nigel Anthony
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 44 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-05-13
    Publisher: Simon & Schuster Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 116 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
From crime legend Ruth Rendell, the gripping new novel in her "beloved" (USA Today) Inspector Wexford series, which will soon mark its fiftieth anniversary
A female vicar named Sarah Hussain is discovered strangled in her Kingsmarkham vicarage. Maxine, the gossipy cleaning woman who finds the body, happens to also be in the employ of former Chief Inspector Reginald Wexford and his wife. When called on by his old deputy, Wexford, who has taken to reading The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire as a retirement project, leaps at the chance to tag along with the investigators. Wexford is intrigued by the unusual circumstances of the murder, but he's also desperate to escape the chatty Maxine.
A single mother to a teenage girl, Hussain was a woman working in a male-dominated profession. Of mixed race and an outspoken church reformer, she had turned some in her congregation against her, including the conservative vicar's warden. Could one of her enemies in the church have gone so far as to kill her? Or could it have been the elderly next-door gardener with a muddled alibi?
As Wexford searches the vicar's house alongside the police, he sees a book, Newman's Apologia Pro Vita Sua, lying on Hussain's bedside table. Inside it is a letter serving as a bookmark. Without thinking much, Wexford puts it into his pocket. Wexford soon realizes he has made a grave error - he's removed a piece of evidence from the crime scene. Yet what he finds inside begins to illuminate the murky past of Sarah Hussain. Is there more to her than meets the eye?
No Man's Nightingale is Ruth Rendell's masterful twenty-fourth installment in one of the great crime series of all time.
    Critic Reviews:
"Nigel Anthony returns to narrate the 24th entry in Rendell's popular Reginald Wexford seriesAnthony is a master of characterization, not only varying his register and accent but also coloring the dialogue of each individual with the appropriate personality. Listeners quickly get a feel for Wexford's struggle to remember his new role as interested civilian as Anthony expertly conveys the ex-cop's difficulty in balancing his own opinions of the murder victim with his professionalism as a criminal investigator. Fans will love this glimpse of Wexford's life outside the office." (AudioFile)
"Ruth Rendell is my dream writer. Her prose style...has the disquieting intimacy of an alien touch in the dark." (New York Times Book Review)
"No one surpasses Ruth Rendell when it comes to stories of obsession, istability, and malignant coincidence." (Stephen King)

    Perfect audiobook
What did you love best about No Man's Nightingale?
Interesting characters, plot moved along with secrets revealed at a rapid clip. Interesting subtext about racial, gender stereotypes. Everything came together nicely at the end.
What about Nigel Anthonys performance did you like?
Barely noticed his performance- all the accents were very realistic!
    Any additional comments?
Light entertainment, but exceptionally well done.

    Narrator: Joe Mantegna
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 3 hrs and 39 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-22-13
    Publisher: Random House Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 100 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
Its December in Boston, and Spenser is busy planning the menu for Christmas dinner when hes confronted in his office by a young boy named Slide. Homeless and alone, Slide has found refuge with an organization named Street Business, which gives shelter and seeks job opportunities for the homeless and lost. Slides mentor, Jackie Alvarez, is being threatened, and Street Business is in danger of losing its tenuous foothold in the community, turning Slide and many others like him back on the street. But its not a simple case of intimidation - Spenser, aided by Hawk, finds a trail that leads to a dangerous drug kingpin, whose hold on the at-risk community Street Business serves threatens not just the boys safety and security, but their lives as well.
Unfinished at the time of his death, Silent Night was completed by Parkers longtime agent, whose decades-long association with Parkers work gives her unique insight and perspective to his voice and storytelling style. Her contribution also speaks volumes about their enduring friendship.

    Don't Waste Your Money
This was nothing like a Spencer novel; it was a touchy-feely, warm and fuzzy story, completely unlike the Spencer novels of old. The author took the characters and tried to make them something they weren't. She tried to turn Spencer into Father Flanagan who carries a .44 and give Hawk a social conscious. There was hardly any action and no mystery whatsoever. 100% do not recommend this novel. Please bring back Ace Atkins.
Great Spencer in the Parker style
I have always loved Robert Parkers Spencer detective series. I listen to many of these as audiobooks narrated by Joe Mantegna in the 90s. This book follows in that wonderful tradition. Its a good story, not too sentimental, and with all the hallmarks of a traditional Spencer story. Joe Mantegna is wonderful as narrator.
    Enjoyed the Characters
I enjoyed the characters "Slide" and "Carmen" and enjoyed the lack of blood and guts.
A good read but not all Robert Parker
This author has the general idea of Spencer and Hawk but does not quite have all of Robert Parker's the net. The characters are not as holistic and deep as Parkers.
    Nice to see Spenser again!
Would you consider the audio edition of Silent Night to be better than the print version?
Yes. Joe Mantegna is the perfect voice for Spenser, Hawk and the rest of the gang.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Silent Night?
I always love the banter between Spenser and Hawk.
What does Joe Mantegna bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Joe Mantegna brings out the smart ass in Spenser. When I read Spenser novels, I read it with Joe's voice in my head.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I didn't have any extreme reaction to Silent Night. It wasn't my favorite Spenser novel, but, like the others that I've read, I thoroughly enjoyed it and was sad to see the "time remaining" indicator on my audiobook tick down to the end.
    Any additional comments?
I've read or listened to every Spenser novel that there is and consider myself a big fan of Robert B. Parker and especially of the Spenser Novels. Silent Night is no exception. Like Ace Atkins, I think that Helen Brann has done a great job bringing us another Spenser story.

    Title: Critical Mass
    Subtitle: VI Warshawski, Book 16

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 17 hrs and 29 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-22-13

Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 292 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
The brilliant V. I. Warshawski returns in another hard-hitting entry, combining razor-sharp plotting and compelling characters with a heady mix of timely political and social themes.
    V. I. Warshawskis closest friend in Chicago is the Viennese-born doctor Lotty Herschel, who lost most of her family in the Holocaust. Lotty escaped to London in 1939 on the Kindertransport with a childhood playmate, Kitty Saginor Binder. When Kittys daughter finds her life is in danger, she calls Lotty, who in turn summons V. I. to help. The daughters troubles turn out to be just the tip of an iceberg of lies, secrets, and silence, whose origins go back to the mad competition among America, Germany, Japan, and England to develop the first atomic bomb. The secrets are old, but the people who continue to guard them today will not let go without a fight.

Shrillness...not for the faint of heat
    Any additional comments?
The novel itself is very interesting. However, my complaint is with the narration. Sara Paretsky clearly wrote very sharp, confrontational dialogue for her characters. That is her style. This audiobook really accentuates that aspect, which can be quite distracting and overbearing. The narrator does a good job of giving each the characters an independent voice, but I felt as if every character was shrilling screeching at me, including the non-adversarial ones. The only reprieve I seemed to get was with the V.I. Warshawski's internal monologue. I don't know if this effect was a result of the abrubt dialogue, or the narrator's own twist on the book. Either way, I had to listen to this audiobook in limited chunks to give myself a break. I felt as if I'd been listening to angry people fighting in every chapter, and it was just too much! It detracted from my enjoyment of the plot. In the future, I will save her books for reading, rather than listening on audiobook.
    POWERFUL
This book is not for the faint of heart. It tells in graphic detail what happened to Jews in Nazi Germany and elsewhere during that period. This book also tells about how the US accepted known Nazi criminals into this country in order to help build a nuclear reactor and bomb and gave them US Citizenship.
I enjoyed the science and the interactions especially Lotte, Max and Vic's.
Intricate, detailed and a bit confusing
I have read all 16 VI Warshawski books, some of them twice. Although the story line for Critical Mass is excellent, it gets really twisted up in places, like an expensive pair of pantyhose that knots up when someone tries to get into them quickly. You have to listen to the story line in this book very carefully or you will be clicking on the "back" button every several minutes. It would probably help if the listener has some knowledge of the Cold War, nuclear technology, the Holocaust, and the ins and outs of the CIA. I actually have quite a bit of knowledge in this area so I was able to follow the plot but the novel itself was very dark and somewhat depressing. I think that Sara Paretsky was trying to teach a lesson in ethics. It's good to a point but it can become very upsetting. It can also become very confusing to someone who has very little knowledge of the shenanigans that our government has gone through in the past regarding nuclear weaponry. All said though, it's still worth listening to.
    Intricate plot
I have read some of the V.

The latest installment of the New York Times best-selling Spellman Mysteries, a "series that keeps getting better and better" (Publishers Weekly), finds private investigator Izzy Spellman on the verge of losing everything.
Isabel Spellman is used to being followed, extorted, and questioned - all occupational hazards of working at her family's firm, Spellman Investigations. Her little sister, Rae, once tailed Izzy for weeks on end to discover the identity of her boyfriend. Her mother, Olivia, once blackmailed Izzy with photographic evidence of Prom Night 1994. It seemed that the Spellmans would lay off after Izzy was fired for breaching client confidentiality, but then Izzy avenged her dismissal by staging a hostile takeover of the company. She should have known better than to think she could put such shenanigans behind her.
In The Last Word, Izzy's troubles are just beginning. After her hostile takeover of Spellman Investigations, Izzy's parents simply go on strike. Her sister, Rae, comes back into the family business with questionable motivations. Her other employees seem to be coping with anxiety disorders, and she has no idea how to pay the bills. However, her worst threat comes from someone who is no relation. Within months of assuming control of the business, Izzy is accused of embezzling from a former client, the ridiculously wealthy Mr. Slayter, who happens to have Alzheimer's, which Izzy and he are diligently trying to keep under wraps. Not only is Slayter's business and reputation on the line, but if Izzy gets indicted for embezzlement, she'll lose everything - her business, her license, and her family's livelihood. Is this the end of Izzy Spellman, PI? The answer makes The Last Word, hands down, the most thrilling book in this best-selling, award-nominated series.

Don't leave us without more Spellmans!
Lisa Lutz, you may want a break from the Spellmans, but we don't! Please bring Izzy and the gang back! I like your other books, but I've bonded with the Spellmans and I miss them. Christina Moore is a great voice for Izzy.
    Love those Spellman's
Love Izzy Spellman and the whole Spellmen crew! They never disappoint! Lisa Lutz does it again!
    great book
I've listened to this entire series. It's very funny and well written. I highly recommend it and all the spellman files
    Long live the Spellmans
I adore this series - unlike any other and endlessly amusing! Do yourself a favor and read them all. The end
    Oh wow
In my opinion, a very disappointing ending. I kind of wish I hadn't listened to it. There were parts of this book that are just insurmountable. It almost ruined the rest of the series for me. However, I was glued to it and listened just as intently as any other book. The writing was just as good, the characters a little more annoying than usual but still the characters we love. It's just not a satisfying ending for me. Especially for Edward. Wtf seriously. And Al. Double wtf!! And as much as I hate to admit it, I guess I was hoping for the HEA in this book with Henry and Isabel.
I don't think it's over. I think the books will now start with Rae as the main protagonist but the damage is already done for me:(

    Members Reviews:
Terrific second book in the series!!
I like this series. I really really do. It has many faults and flaws, but manages to be charming and fun to read. I am always eager for the next book.
JJ Graves is a really intriguing woman. She has to work hard to over come her PTDS in this book. I like that she wasn't just fine after her near death experience, it gave her a greater sense of reality. She has more depth in this book and warms up on the emotional front as well. She is still engaging and dynamic. I love her playful relationship with Jack. They make a great couple and I really hope they stay together. Having been friends since diapers makes for a real connection between the characters. I felt the love more in this book than the last.
The romance is kicked up in this book. That bedroom door opens up more than a crack!! Still not a full on smexy erotic read, but more detailed than a squeaky clean romance. They are very playful in and out of the bedroom. My favorite type of relationship!
The mystery this time has underlying Aryan Nation themes. It is more on a solvable level, there are loads of holes and missing info still, but I was able to determine real suspects. I really enjoyed the twists and turns in the read. It was a stead pace for the action and details were doled out in a timely manner.
The narration is all from JJ's POV, which makes things limited when it comes to understanding other's thoughts and motivations. You don't know what the supporting characters think until they speak their thoughts.
I think there is inconsistency in the way JJ views her relationship with the towns people and what happens. In both this book and the last the people seem to treat her more as a beloved orphan they need to look out for. With the exception of a few people, the townsfolk rally around her and are meddling in the ways of ones who love not hate. I am not sure how she gets the impression they do not like her, I get the exact opposite from comments ad actions.
I listened to the audiobook narrated by Laura Faye Smith, who is rapidly becoming a favorite. She does a great job of adding snark and sass to her tone that fits the characters. She does a brilliant job with the rapid fire narration and dialogue. I love a quick read and she delivers speed without losing any quality. Great voices that are distinct and consistent, very important when the dialogue ping pongs and you need to follow who is speaking.
Overall, this is a really intriguing series. The characters and banter go a long way in making the read enjoyable. Even with the issues that come up in the story line, I can't stop listening! The flaws are so easy to overlook because the book is very charming and charismatic.

    Narrator is good
I've seen several reviews that bash the narrator but I think she does a good job. It's easy to determine who's speaking just by narrator's voice. Lori sounds different than Emma and Willis Sr. sounds different than Bill. I hope Ms. Atherton stays with this narrator. She makes the Aunt Dimity books.

    Now a Major Motion Picture
With the publication of his groundbreaking novels The Da Vinci Code, The Lost Symbol, and Angels & Demons, Dan Brown has become an international best-selling sensation, seamlessly fusing codes, symbols, art, and history into riveting thrillers that have captivated hundreds of millions of fans around the world. Now Dan Brown takes listeners deep into the heart of Italy, guiding them through a landscape that inspired one of history's most ominous literary classics.
"The darkest places in hell are reserved for those who maintain their neutrality in times of moral crisis."
Harvard professor of symbology Robert Langdon awakens in a hospital in the middle of the night. Disoriented and suffering from a head wound, he recalls nothing of the last 36 hours, including how he got there...or the origin of the macabre object that his doctors discover hidden in his belongings.
Langdon's world soon erupts into chaos, and he finds himself on the run in Florence with a stoic young woman, Sienna Brooks, whose clever maneuvering saves his life. Langdon quickly realizes that he is in possession of a series of disturbing codes created by a brilliant scientist - a genius whose obsession with the end of the world is matched only by his passion for one of the most influential masterpieces ever written: Dante Alighieri's dark epic poem The Inferno.
Racing through such timeless locations as the Palazzo Vecchio, the Boboli Gardens, and the Duomo, Langdon and Brooks discover a network of hidden passageways and ancient secrets as well as a terrifying new scientific paradigm that will be used either to vastly improve the quality of life on earth...or to devastate it.
In his most riveting and thought-provoking novel to date, Dan Brown has raised the bar yet again. Inferno is a sumptuously entertaining listen - a novel that will captivate listeners with the beauty of classical Italian art, history, and literature while also posing provocative questions about the role of cutting-edge science in our future.

But when her body is discovered, Hamish is forced to investigate a crime that the only known witness - now dead - had forgotten.

    Like visiting an old friend
Hamish Macbeth #29? (2013 addition to the mystery series)
After the first moments of the narrator speaking over harsh jangly intro music, this book was wonderful! I enjoyed Mr. Malcolm's rendition of various accents, and he was able to differentiate among characters without making any of them sound too extreme. The story was up to Beaton's high standards for this series; each book seems like a visit to Lochdubh to see old friends. Having read the first 28 books in only a few months, I am now reduced to waiting a year for each new addition, and it's difficult!
    Fun, Funny, and Highly Entertaining
If you could sum up Death of Yesterday in three words, what would they be?
    Amusing, unpredictable, & funny
    Any additional comments?
Graeme Malcolm's performance brings the characters to life.
Hearing the characters speak (in various accents!) makes this (audio)book much more enjoyable than its printed form.
    Outstanding, as usual.
What did you love best about Death of Yesterday?
Once again, Beaton has written a clever and tangled mystery. But the ever clever Hamish figures it all out, much to the anger of his superiors. Now if he could just get his love life on the right track. Too bad they don't go for bigamy in the Highlands, or maybe it should be a same sex union.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Death of Yesterday?
The revelation that he most beautiful Hannah was all falsies.
What about Graeme Malcolms performance did you like?
His character were clear and his accents were wonderful.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
    Hamish does it again!
    Any additional comments?
They need to bring back the BBC series.
    Reliable entertainment
These books have been great escapist fun and I'm going to find it hard to finish the series. There are plenty of murders, but none so real that it is disturbing. It was interesting to see that nasty brother and sister again with the plot of their lives moving forward in a satisfying way. This time, I found I began to care about Hamish's love life, which isn't a wise choice.
    Death of My Interest
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
    No.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
The whole story would have to be scrapped and started over. Hamish was more boring than I ever knew him to be, and the lack of participation by Loch Dubh citizens was very noticeable.
Which character as performed by Graeme Malcolm was your favorite?
Hamish's assistant, Dick. His furnishing of the station, his cooking and cleaning, made me chuckle. He's not much of an assistant, but he's a heck of a wife. Graeme Malcolm is the real bright spot in this book. He is an awesome reader. He makes a good book better and a less than good book readable.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Heavens no! This is the first time I haven't read a Marion Chesney book in one sitting.
    5 hr 35 min
