Caffery has no idea who or what he is searching for, but one thing he is sure of: it's a race against time. Meanwhile, the Anchor-Ferrers, a wealthy local family, are fighting for their lives in their remote home 10 miles away. Two men have tricked their way into the house and are holding the family for ransom. Yet as the captors' demands become increasingly bizarre and humiliating, it becomes clear that this is more than a random crime - it's a personal vendetta.

Different narrator than the other novels
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
I have enjoyed the entire Jack Caffrey series with a combination of reading and listening. I've liked them all, and was especially captivated by the narrator for the other audio books. This recent novel has a new narrator that I didn't care for, although it's difficult to replace a narrator that you've really come to appreciate.
As for the story itself I must also say that I'm sure it was just as good as the other books in the series. I, however, couldn't continue once I realized part of the story involved a dog being tortured. I want to emphasize that this is not a bad review- it's just a personal viewpoint and a caution for animal (particularly dog) lovers with sensitivity to animal cruelty.
    Excellent Mystery and Suspense
This is 7th Jack Rafferty book, but my first experience with this author. It's a terrific story with great characters, even with the sad undercurrent of ,child abuse flowing throughout the book.
The walking man is fascinating, an ex-con and father of a murdered daughter who took revenge on his daughter's killer. While serving time he learned all he could from the imprisoned pedophiles, their motivations, fantasies, networks, etc. Now he's a nomad, searching carefully for the grave of his long dead daughter. He becomes a colorful, mysterious and valuable source for Jack Rafferty to help find a kidnapped family.
It's well written and read. Ive already tried another Mo Hayder book and plan on listening to several more.
    So very slowwwwwwwwwwwww
7 Books in and Jack is still looking for the bones of his brother. Move it or loose it/me already. There's always some obscure connection to something (I have no idea how many pieces there are to this puzzle) An hour in and it's so convoluted - I really don't have time for it to get good. I'm all about a long story if it stays on point to get to a point. I've listed to Bird man - It was o.k.. I like the shock value from Mo. Ritual had the worst narrator - But I thought I was liking the story - so I hung in there. It was ehhhh by the end... I can see this long road and I doubt it will floor me at the end. I'm not a Publix shopper that will eat all but one shrimp and return the one and ask for my money back. I am an hour in and I am returning now. Probably my last Mo book.
    Overlong, dreary, ugly
I did read the entire book, although it was a slog. This was the first Hayder book I've read. I was interested in the characters, the detective's story was interesting and fairly compelling.

    Publisher's Summary:
Alex Morrow faces her toughest opponents yet in this brilliant new thriller about criminals, consequences, and convictions.
Police detective Alex Morrow has met plenty of unsavory characters in her line of work, but arms dealer Michael Brown ranks among the most brutal and damaged of the criminals she's known. Morrow is serving as a witness in Brown's trial, where the case hinges on his fingerprints found on the guns he sells.
When the investigation leads to a privileged Scottish lawyer who's expecting to be assassinated after a money laundering scheme goes bad, and a woman who's spying on the people who put her in jail, Morrow has her hands full. And that's before she even gets to her family issues.
The Red Road is a thrilling new audiobook from a masterful writer, proving once again that, "If you don't love Denise Mina, you don't love crime fiction." (Val McDermid).

    Denise Mina does it again
I've been waiting for this audiobook, and it happened to be released the day I had to start a 2-day solo drive. It got me from NC to Connecticut, then I had a couple of hours until Vermont to think about it. In my book, Denise Mina is right up there with Kate Atkinson in her ability to create a fascinating mystery and write vivid, believable characters. I'm not quite to putting her up there with P.D. James, but I'm considering it. I love the Alex Morrow series in particular; the Paddy Meehan books are darker and more violent. Still excellent, but not as much to my taste. She continues to develop Morrow's character . . . the books have so much more depth than your average lighter-weight mystery. The threads of the multiple plots twine around each other and lead you further until Mina unravels them and you find yourself thrilled with what you've listened to and sad that it's over.
Cathleen McCarron is a terrific choice for this narration; the characters are spot-on and she has a beautiful delivery. She has only narrated a few audiobooks and I sure hope she'll do more. A real pleasure to listen to.
Well written as usual, but hard for me to follow.
    Any additional comments?
I'm writing mid-way through listening, out of need to express my frustration. On one hand, I've read Mina's other books (not listened) and appreciated them a lot. She writes beautiful prose and is magical depicting archeology of damaged characters. The reader performs well with a lovely, exacting Scots brogue, which while authentic, leads me to rewind fairly often to be sure I caught what was said.
On the other hand, it's hard to keep track of past and present, who did what to whom, when and why, and what has evolved in the characters' lives from then to now. Some chapters start with the the 1997 date, others with no date, and we're left to assume they're happening 'now', but if you've forgotten a character from earlier chapters, it's easy to feel lost. It's back and forth, back and forth.
Thus far, I'm thinking I'd more enjoy this book as read than listened to, so I could thumb back to previous sections to remind myself of events and people. As it is, I'm disappointed and exasperated, tempted to quit reading but not wanting to. Sigh. Maybe it's just senior brain.
Sorry to come to the end
With most mysteries, I am a bit bored by the end.

Length: 10 hrs and 58 mins
    Language: English

    Publisher: Random House Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 892 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
After 35 riveting, internationally acclaimed novels of psychological suspense, number-one New York Times best-selling author Jonathan Kellerman returns with his most stunning thriller to date. Killer is a mesmerizing L.A. noir portrayal of the darkest impulses of human nature carried to shocking extremes.
The City of Angels has more than its share of psychopaths, and no one recognizes that more acutely than the brilliant psychologist and police consultant Dr. Alex Delaware. Despite that, Constance Sykes, a sophisticated, successful physician, hardly seems like someone Alex needs to fear. Then, at the behest of the court, he becomes embroiled in a bizarre child custody dispute initiated by Connie against her sister and begins to realize that there is much about the siblings he has failed to comprehend. And when the court battle between the Sykes sisters erupts into cold, calculating murder and a rapidly growing number of victims, Alex knows hes been snared in a toxic web of pathology.
Nothing would please Alex more than to be free of the ugly spectacle known as Sykes v. Sykes. But then the little girl at the center of the vicious dispute disappears and Alex knows he must work with longtime friend Detective Milo Sturgis, braving an obstacle course of Hollywood washouts, gangbangers, and self-serving jurists in order to save an innocent life.
Killer is Kellerman - and Delaware - at their finest.
    Critic Reviews:
"Jonathan Kellerman has justly earned his reputation as a master of the psychological thriller." (People)
"Kellerman really knows how to keep those pages turning." (The New York Times Book Review)

Probably Weakest Yet in the Series
As always John Rubinstein did a great job as the voice of Alex Delaware. Unfortunately he didn't have too much to work with here. Kellerman seemed to have have pretty much phoned this one in. A great deal of extraneous detail that failed to move the story ahead; If you're a fan of the series it's worth a credit; if not choose another book in the series. I have a hard time seeing anyone who starts with this one becoming much of fan.
Promising start that pretty much fizzled out
I've read numerous Alex Delaware books and this was an "okay." Initially I thought it would be very good based on the most interesting character; she ends up getting killed. I thought there was a lot of filler and have to agree with the reviewer who said if this is the first Delaware book you listen to you probably won't listen to another. The narrator was outstanding and really sounded like different people were narrating, not just one person. He elevated the material. I don't regret the credit I used, but it wasn't riveting - just okay - t I didn't have to devote much brain matter to it while listening.
    good
Worth the credit. Different from typical stories a little less Mylo and maybe it suffered a bit for that. It wasn't a page turner and I had to look at the summary to remember what it was about two days later.
Still I enjoyed it while I listened and wasn't disappointed with my purchase.
YAY for another Alex Delaware book
Kellerman nailed yet another great book in this series. I absolutely completely LOVE this series and am always on pins and needles for his next book.

Love it, Higgings done it again!
Sean Dillon vs mad Paul Rashid
Higgins is up to his usual action, thriller, this time with a Middle Eastern flair. Sean Dillon takes on more than a normal person and prevails - of course. I enjoy his writing but don't expect it to be totally realistic. Its a good read if you like this genre and I do.
    Love Jack Higgins!
I've read this series numerous times, and I have all of them on my Nook, but for some bizarre reason, three books in the series aren't available in e-books, and this is one of them. I was glad to be able to find this book, as my library didn't carry it. I will keep this in my "real" library to enjoy this series over and over.

    Great book, as usual
Great book, as usual. Now have all the Sean Dillon books and have read them all in order. Most are on Kindle but 3 are actual books. Can't wait until the next one comes out.

Wisecracking pen-for-hire Jaine Austen is back - and she's about to discover that working on the set of a Hollywood sitcom is no laughing matter....
Jaine still hasn't found a good man - or a way to keep all those sugary snacks from going straight to her hips. But - with a little help from her best friend Kandi - she's finally landed a gig as a sitcom writer! True, Muffy 'n Me (aka "Bewitched with Tits") isn't going to win any Emmys. And her office at Miracle Studios needs a little sprucing up, and a few dozen rat traps. But it sure beats writing boring brochures and bad resumes, so Jaine's not complaining. Until the plot thickens - with murder....
Jaine figures the trouble all started when Muffy 'n Me's hottest star, gorgeous Quinn Kirkland, seduced the head writer - whose husband also works on the show. But when Quinn's caught in bed with the barely-legal actress who plays his niece, things really heat up - and his many jealous girlfriends start to figure things out. . .
So when the no-good heartthrob drops dead after nibbling a poisoned doughnut, Jaine isn't terribly surprised. But who could have done it? A competitive co-star and a couple of scorned lovers top Jaine's list of suspects, but the police have zeroed in on her man-crazy pal Kandi. She fell hard for Quinn - and nearly fell apart when she learned of all his other women. Now Jaine has to figure out who finally stopped Quinn's cheatin' heart - before her best friend ends up behind bars...

I was a bit disappointed. The plot was so light and fluffy that there was hardly anything to it. The characters were predictable and stereotypical and the pacing was a bit slow. However, Jaine had a few funny moments and the mystery aspect was okay. I'll probably listen to the next one because I think there is some potential.
    Loved it
Ive read several books in this series and Ive enjoyed them all. I prefer the later books, but this one was well done too. This is the second book, and I see the author added the main characters parents emails, which was something I missed in the first. They always provide a fun side story. The narrator is one of my favorites.

    Murder with bite
Dr. Frederick Gilchrist has a reputation. Though his cheap rates and penchant for pulling teeth have earned him a clientele, wiser highlanders avoid the womanizing dentist. It takes a blinding toothache to send Hamish Macbeth 120 miles out of Lochdubh to see the man, only to find him dead. Since everyone is pleased the dentist is deceased - patients, several harassed women, his ex-wife - Macbeth faces one of the more biting challenges of his career. When he starts extracting clues, he uncovers a past as dangerous as it is shocking.
    Members Reviews:
    Nice lively performance
Shaun Grinnell ' s lively performance with the lilting Scottish brogue I am used to really made this particular outing of Hamish Macbeth entertaining. Hamish sorting out the tangles in this Highland mystery was a headshaker for one who likes to hold the threads if the plot in their mind.
    Hamish--my favorite Scottish Highlander!
It is always a pleasure and delight to listen to a Hamish MacBeth story. (In fact, I save them up for special listening times). Hamish is a Highlander who seems to resist any attempt at promotion from his modest village job as constable (because he loves his simple life as it is, and doesn't want to complicate it).
In this story, he awakens one day with a terrible toothache--and in his efforts to get it dealt with quickly, he winds up going to Dr. Gilchrist, a dentist who has a reputation for not doing very good dental work--but he's cheap, and also Hamish can be seen quickly.
Upon his arrival, he finds the dentist--murdered--and so the investigation begins. Those above him don't really ever want Hamish's help on their police work--they look down on him, and never value his contributions. So, as usual, he moseys along at his own pace, working in the quiet background, to put the pieces together (as he usually does) despite their efforts to keep him away.
I've never heard a single one of these books that I didn't love. But this one was a little confusing with a lot of characters. Not enough to take away stars--they are all really fun (and often funny). But I didn't think this was the best in the entire series. There are a couple of particularly funny scenes with the minister's wife--among others, that make up for other things in this book.
Shaun Grindell is one of the two narrators who have read these books. I like them both in different ways--but Grindell has a lovely rich brogue that makes the books sound even more authentic. I occasionally have to listen hard to understand all the words--but that is not a criticism. It's part of what draws the listener more deeply into the rich atmosphere that M C Beaton paints with this series.
Another nice thing about these books--is that, even though characters move and change over time, it is easy to listen to the books in any order, without being too confused, or having situations from earlier stories revealed.

Book Two in the Black Flagged series
Two years after shocking Washington, D.C., with a brutal betrayal, General Terrence Sanderson prepares for his triumphant return. With his illegal covert operations group resurrected, he waits in the shadows for the right moment to demonstrate the grim necessity of the Black Flag program. His opportunity may arrive sooner than expected.
At Langley, Karl Berg is appointed to a new position within the CIA's National Clandestine Service. As senior liaison to the Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) Intelligence Center, he makes a disturbing discovery. Russian Federation intelligence services are secretly scouring Europe to find Anatoly Reznikov, a rogue Russian scientist at the top of every nation's WMD watch list.
Criminally obsessed with reviving a project long banned by the Russian government, Reznikov has finally found partners willing to fund his horrifying research. While the Russians pursue Reznikov, Berg goes "off the books" again and sends one of Sanderson's Black Flag teams to investigate.
Led by Daniel Petrovich, the team uncovers a twisted and devastating conspiracy aimed at the United States and its European allies. With the help of Berg's shadowy network, an unlikely team of "illegal" operatives races against the clock to find Reznikov, before the Russians eliminate their only link to the emerging worldwide threat.
As always, nothing is quite what it seems in this gritty world of covert operatives, rogue extremists and back room Washington agendas.

A fun ride that pulled me in!
The second book in the Black Flagged series delivers for the spy loving thrill seeker. Separate from the first book, Redux is really the start of the series. I recommend reading the first Black Flagged book, its good and it gives you some background on the main players and their situation but its not necessary to enjoy Redux which gives you enough background so that youre not left in the dark. It takes a little while for it to get going but when it does the action keeps coming non-stop to the end with a little twist to keep with the structure established in book 1. The book pretty much wraps everything up, but leaves some things hanging so it gets a push for me on my complete story test. Redux grabbed me and pulled me in finishing it in less than 7 days, I highly recommended it.
The narration was very good but there were a couple of editing issues which the author has said he will have the audio team fix. Either way it doesn't take away from this great story which you can get lost in.
    Great Story
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, but there's a subtle story-line here that is a bit too patronizing of the federal agencies. As a veteran of the military and many year in overseas special operations I assure all readers that the FBI, ATF, NSA, and DHS are NOT in business to protect and serve American citizens. They exist to protect and serve the most powerful political elite in Washington - and no one else. The military services, and to some degree the CIA, are generally of a different camp. These "overseas-oriented" communities are generally distrusted by the domestic agencies, and for very powerful political reasons. Mr.
