Can a young man come out, find love, and survive senior year all at the same time?

A lesson in being true to yourself ...
What did you like best about this story?
I liked that the story focused on Zach, Key and their friends and the relationships among them. This is also a romance but it is written in a sweet way with no overt sex scenes to make anyone uncomfortable.
What does Luke Avery bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
While Mr. Avery could be a little 'dry' at times, I felt that there were moments when he gave the characters and the scenes the emotion that they needed. He did draw me into the story and kept me entertained. I would listen to another of his works to see what he does with other genres of books.
If you could take any character from Zach's Secret out to dinner, who would it be and why?
I would love to go out to eat with Ms. Trevott. Her back story was sad but she endured on and was making a difference to her students. I appreciated that. There always seems to be that one teacher in every school that just connects with the students in a way that makes it all ok.
    Any additional comments?
Zach's Secret is the story of a young man, a senior in high school, his coming to terms with who he is. This is a book that everyone should listen to or read. I would highly recommend it. Many things can be learned from this story.
I received a copy of the book for free in exchange for an honest review.
Horrible story, a chore to finish
Would you try another book from Matthew W. Grant and/or Luke Avery?
The narrator, yes. The author, probably not.
Would you ever listen to anything by Matthew W. Grant again?
    Doubtful
What aspect of Luke Averys performance would you have changed?
Completely wrong choice of narrator for a high school student
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Zach's Secret?
The whole story with the headmaster was stupid, but I could have lived with the OTT drama, if there had been some emotions!
    Loved and Hated it!
Narration - Luke Avery - Pretty good...he's a good narrator, although he did sound very much like an adult. Which I guess these guys are 18 and adults, but he just sounded a lot older than I would perceive these young men to sound. But other than that, he has a great voice, capable of voicing several unique character voices and it seemed to be a pretty good production.
The story, I loved and hated. I hate that there are people in this world that have to go through what these kids had to go through and I know this isn't just a story, but crap like this happens every day and well, that just makes me mad.
I agree with some other reviewers that Zach seemed a little emotionless at times and that there was room for this story to go so much farther with this whole topic, but it was still a really enjoyable book for me.

The Beard is a comedy with sexy scenes and some explicit sections.
    Members Reviews:
    Defiant Mediocrity
This novella contains a weak plot; broad unrealistic caricatures; a totally ridiculous core concept; yet I can't bring myself to dismiss it completely.
Our main character Kathy interviews for a job with an LGBT lobbying group and despite a myriad of federal regulations that would prohibit such discrimination, she has to be a lesbian to work there.
Badly needing a job she invents a girlfriend by referencing a friend of a friend that she's never spoken to. There is a nosy know-it-all employee who's sure she's posing and she wastes no opportunity to announce her views to everyone within listening distance. When Kathy's boss tells her that she will be expected to produce said girlfriend at the company Christmas party she knows she has to get creative. Anna is convinced to play the part of her paramour and the resulting events at the party are as over the top teen movie like as they are unlikely. Still there is a likable quality to this story that makes it a worthwhile listening experience..
    Cute story about A LIE
Would you consider the audio edition of The Beard to be better than the print version?
    Never read the print version
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Beard?
When Kelly had to bring her pretend lesbian girl friend to the Gay-Lesbian lobby office she works for in DC. ( She told them she had a girl friend when she applied for the job) So her friends sister who's gay got a friend ANNA to go with Kelly. And Surprise Kelly was having feelings for Anna. But when Caught by the boss in the ladies room having sex......Kelly thought she would loose her job....I won't tell any more
What about Tillie Hoopers performance did you like?
I never heard her before but she did an ok job she gave the right emotions and reactions to what ever was happening.
Who was the most memorable character of The Beard and why?
Sylvia the office bitch who was trying to get Kelly
    Any additional comments?
It was a cute story about telling a lie to get a job. And we all know it's always best to be honest because lies always have a way of catching up. I got this on sale and it was a nice cute story. Not a romance or erotica, but more about Growing up and learning experiences.
    Funny story!!!!
This was one of the funniest stories I've heard!!!! If you want a good laugh, you should definitely listen to this book!!!!
The Beard is an amazing Book that makes you laugh
Where does The Beard rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
It ranks very high, not as high as Radclyffe, but almost up there with a B+ book grade.

    Title: The Road Home
    Author: Michael Thomas Ford
    Narrator: Blake Somerset

Length: 9 hrs and 5 mins

    Release date: 06-11-13
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 60 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Gay & Lesbian
    Publisher's Summary:
When a car accident leaves photographer Burke Crenshaw in need of temporary full-time care, he finds himself back in the one place no forty-year-old chooses to be--his childhood bedroom. There, in the Vermont home where he grew up, Burke begins the long process of recuperation, and watches as his widowed father finds happiness in a new relationship that's a constant reminder of everything Burke wants and lacks. Exploring local history, Burke discovers an intriguing series of letters from a Civil War soldier to his fianc.
With the help of librarian Sam Guffrey, he begins to research a 125-year-old mystery that seems to be reaching into the present day. The more Burke delves into the past, the more he's forced to confront the person he has become: the choices he made and those he avoided, his ideas of what it takes to be a successful gay man, his feelings about his mother's death, and the suppressed tension that simmers between himself and his father.
Compelling, frankly funny, and often wise, The Road Home is the story of one man's coming to terms with who he is, what he wants out of life, and where he belongs--and the complex, surprising path that finally takes him there.

    Unusual! Satisfying!
A technically very well written and superbly narrated piece. Other Amazon reviews have praised and criticized various aspects and deservedly. I appreciated the main character. I related very well to him, sometimes too much! (that is a good thing). I have never read anything else by Ford, this was the first, so that his foray into unusual territories (the pagan thing, the civil war sub-plot, ect) was a pleasant surprise. One review said this was about the protagonist and his father. No, it's not, that's secondary. The story is about a near middle-aged gay man whose trek through life has been far less than expected. He wants more and like many of us, doesn't know if, when or where that's going to manifest. The pagan sub-plot by the way was a bold bit that actually works. I have had a bit of experience in that vein myself, did not work for me, but that's the way she goes. Some of the prose was overly baked and in my view entirely unnecessary and in the beginning nearly caused me to stop the read. Glad I didn't stop, but one star subtracted from the review because of the near miss (LOL). One last thing ... I hope Ford reprises the characters and writes a Part II, I did like it well enough to want more!
No need to check your scepticism at the door!
At last, a book you don't need to check your scepticism at the door for. The characters feel real. The author doesn't feel the need to wrap up every minute detail, but concentrates on the the protagonist's story line. The "ghosts" in the plot didn't feel contrived, and even the naked swimming ritual at the pond, however bizarre, added to the emotion of the Burk's return home. A really fantastic book.
    A Great Storyline and Characters
Finally a gay themed book that doest have erotic sex scenes every chapter. I love that the author spent time creating a beautiful story with even better characters. I can not wait to start reading the next book in the series.
typical Ford book, I enjoy his stories
This book has several plot twists that I did not expect, the ending was totally expected as far as Blake's love interest is concerned.

Shortly thereafter a letter arrives at the archbishop's office claiming that more was going on than anyone ever expected. Now his one chance to survive lies in finally uncovering the truth.

    Intelligent and emotional mystery
The story involves two Catholic priests who met and fell in love as teens at seminary, who are reunited in their mid-30s. Can they have a relationship as adults? What would be the consequences if they do?
The context is one of a growing anti-gay priest witch hunt following the exposure of child abuse. It seems that gay priests had been quite well accepted until now, so long as they were celibate, but they were to become scapegoats.
As the two lovers reunite, there are many secrets that come to light, and there are mysteries that abound, which mostly stem from the shadows caused by hypocrisy, fear of exposure, and so on. Different priests respond in different and interesting ways to the challenge presented by being a gay member of a homophobic institution. These in some ways mirror the different approaches taken by the Church itself at different times and in different contexts. Some attempt to reform the church and change the rules. Others are deeply troubled by breaking vows and of perpetuating damaging lies. Some feel they must leave, others can maintain a dissonance between their words and actions, adopting a twisted legalistic approach to the letter rather than spirit of the rules.
The book is intelligent, well written, and emotionally engaging. The narration is great too. It came up as a recommendation based on my collection of MM books, but this book is of much higher quality than the usual MM fare.
It is harder to find quality literary fiction that involves gay characters on audible than it is to find pulp MM genre romance, unfortunately. But this book certainly deserves much greater prominence among intelligent readers interested in MM relationships.

A Better Place is the story of two boys from two completely different worlds struggling to find themselves amongst a whirlwind of confusion. The unlikely pair struggle through friendship and heartbreaks, betrayal and hardships, to find the deepest desire of their hearts. Casper, the poorest boy in school, goes through life as the "invisible boy", and Brendan, the captain of the high school varsity football team, has it all; muscles, money, fame, and popularity. Hang on for the ride...
Now I do not think this is a bad book and I would recommend to others, especially if you get it on sale. Roeder's writing style is in need of a serious editor. He was all over the place and at times it was hard to follow or muster up the energy to follow. I know that sounds harsh and I do not mean for it to be. The tale of Casper and Brendan is a sweet coming of age story but the intense drama experienced by both characters was a bit unrealistic and a bit contrived. The story could have used some editing. I am not doubting that some of the horrific things that occurred in the story occur, but all at the same time. Towards the end of the book we are introduced to two more principle characters, Nathan and Ethan, with their baggage and lo and behold it was hard for this reader to relate to any of them...perhaps the tornado. Just kidding...though I am not giving this tale a rave review, I do see where and what Roeder was trying to do...but I think there was way too much. The book could have been broken into a series which would have allowed for more insight into the real life drama's presented. Of course, this is just my take...
    Worth your time
Would you listen to A Better Place again? Why?
No. It was a good story, but once you know what's happening, it's kind of pointless to go through it again.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Casper. The author did a good job describing him and I felt like I understood his character best.
    Hate-Listening is the new Hate-Watching
What didnt you like about Andy Babinskis performance?
For some reason he only gives 1 character a distinct voice, everyone else is the same. Why even put for the effort for one character?
    Any additional comments?
Do you know what hate watching is? It is when you find a television show that you hate, and you know you hate it, but you still continue to watch it. Usually it's because the show is over the top, ridiculous, and filled with unbelievable characters and situations.

    Publisher's Summary:
Combining two novellas into one volume, this collection explores the effects of prejudice and the ramifications of violence with a slightly unhinged sense of humor and unexpected tenderness. Lockpick Pornography, originally published in 2005, is a gender-queer adventure story that was not widely available until now. We All Got It Coming presents the experiences of a young couple dealing with the aftermath of an act of violence. From kidnapping the son of a "family values" politician to violent confrontation, these are characters who fight back.

    Give it a second chance
I needed to read it twice to get over the shock of the words written on the page. Comeau wrenches the reader for the first page and made me experience a visceral hatred for the primary character. I hated the way the characters were portrayed; their behaviors atrocious. But, I felt like I was missing something vital. After over a week I started the journey of reading this book for the second time. I found myself identifying with the characters I had hated so deeply only a few days ago. It is not easy strolling through a meadow easy. It is hard and rough. Comeau makes you think; makes you respond to what is at first sight unloveable characters. I will be reading this again and again.
    How I Imagined My Childhood
I have read many of Joey's books and short stories and have truly enjoyed the majority of them. The Complete Lockpick Pornography takes the proverbial cake. It's a very tasty cake too, none of that supermarket overly-sweet business. This is a cake baked with truth, compassion, honest exploration, secrets, human error, friendship, and sexiness. Probably because Joey is honest, sexy, and full of secrets...OR so he seems.
The first story is pretty much how I remember my childhood, my friends, sex, and identity. I'm sure it was actually nothing like in the story, but that's how I remember it and isn't that what is really important? None the less, you should read the story. It's inspiring, challenging, and fun.
The second story reminds me of my relationship with my partner, but I'm not the main character...my partner is. Once again, you should read the story. Then hug someone. You don't have to love them, but maybe you should consider it. Loving people can be tough, but really exciting and rewarding too. Maybe just start with a hug first.
Thanks for the great adventures, Joey.
A novella about genderqueer terrorism and writing children's books.
It is my firm opinion that Joey Comeau will be remembered with the likes of Patricia Highsmith and Albert Camus as one of our most idiosyncratic and important novellists. He repeatedly strikes a certain balance between whimsicality and darkness that I believe is present in all of us, but is so infrequently expressed. The two novellas collected here - his first, Lockpick Pornography, and his latest, its thematic sequel We All Got It Coming - demonstrate just how versatile Joey is as a writer. The same theme is dealt with in the most opposite ways possible, yet presented with the same trademark offbeat humour and unflinching honesty.
Both of these books are absolute joys to read, despite also being ostensibly depressing. The wit is biting, but it's a love bite. There is gut wrenching hilarity within these pages, but it serves to strengthen the genuine messages.

    Just okay!
while the narrator was good, the storyline was not enough to make this listen more than "just okay". If you are looking for a read which keeps your interest and has you wondering what will happen next then this is not it!
Had to warm up to the narrator - but a good story!
Where does A Serving of Love rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
Although I thoroughly enjoyed a 'Serving of Love' some of Andrew Grey's other writings (the 'love means...' Series) a bit more. Overall, a good read!
Have you listened to any of Jeff Gelders other performances before? How does this one compare?
This was my first time listening to this narrator. It took me a while to warm up to him But once I did, I found that I enjoyed the story more & more.
    Any additional comments?
I loved that Andrew Grey wrote a current story - which allowed me to relate to the characters well. He's a good author & I look forward to reading more selections by him.
Not as good as the others
Is there anything you would change about this book?
The story isn't as engaging as the others by Andrew Grey. The emotions of the characters didn't feel genuine and the entire romance was too fast. There wasn't enough time (calendar-wise) for the internal struggles of a guy coming out of the closet and dealing with public life.
The story makes a point of Robert's height and then doesn't use it in anyway. It notes Gregory's illness, but that moves from mild to severe too quickly to be able to identify with him or others nearby.
And the love scenes don't feel realistic, especially for a first love.
What didnt you like about Jeff Gelders performance?
The entire performance felt like someone had cut out fractions of the seconds, or was playing it at 1.25. Without the worded cue (Robert said, Billy said, etc...) the characters were indistinguishable.
    Any additional comments?
Overall, like the author's works, but this one felt flat.
    Uplifting
Very nice love story! I enjoy listening to stories like this that do not focus on negativity and despair as if we do not have enough of them in the real world!
    Good light reading
Exactly what I was expecting. Good, light reading. The story can be more realistic but it is pleasant enough. Money well spent.

    Fool For Love
Iâll be honest. This may be only the second anthology Iâve ever read cover to cover. I was never a big short story reader until I started writing more of it a few years back. I find anthologies (esp. genre anthologies, which is what I normally read) such a mixed bag. Some stories pull me in with a strong plot and fascinating character. Others just donât catch my attention. It was illuminating for me to read an anthology not based on genre but on a theme. Fool for Love not only gave me a collection of well-written, character-driven stories, but it also challenged me to look at love and romance in a new light â several new lights in fact.
    "Thai Angel" David Puterbaugh
What a great way to start an anthology! Somewhere in the first scene I realized how little description I was reading and that it was almost entirely dialogue. My background is in theater and reading this story reminded me more of a script than literature - which in no way is a criticism. Attempting to develop character and conflict almost exclusively through dialogue is not an easy task and any author who can pull it off is very gifted. David Puterbaugh is one of these guys.
His characters were a blast to read, especially Kamaâs mother, with her cantankerous personality. She wasn't the only one though. Kama struggling to make a go of his family's restaurant while hiding his sexual identity from his Thai mother, his wannabe actress sister who only wants what's best for him, his potential love interest, and his eventual love interest â they were all so clearly drawn through the dialogue that extensive description wasn't necessary. I enjoyed reading about these folks so much, I only wish it could have gone on longer.
    âLove Tapsâ Mark G. Harris
Okay, Iâm embarrassed to admit that the passive aggressive nature of this coupleâs relationship completely appealed to me and the evil tricks they played on one another had me laughing out loud over and over again. Itâs like Edward Albee had Martha and George give birth to a pretend dog instead of a pretend son. Genius.
Although a little confused at first, I got into the groove of the narrative quickly and, as Iâm writing this, Iâm still laughing as I recall pizza boxes attached to walls and late-night prank calls. The mischievousness, the paranoia, the dead-on shorthand dialogue of lovers whoâd been together for years, the freakinâ jealousy over a non-existent dog â all of it, I am ashamed to say, I could appreciate and relate to. I loved this thing.

    Publisher's Summary:
Closeted teenager Jeremy is sent to live with wealthy relatives after his mother enters rehab. Struggling to fit into the posh world of Ballena Beach, Jeremy joins the high school swim team, dates a popular girl, and begins to think he may have landed in paradise - until his great aunt Katharine starts to dictate his every moveand a late-night phone call insinuates that his fathers accidental death was not so accidental after all.
As Jeremy grows accustomed to the veneer of a fabulous life, so grows his need for answers - as well as the danger of immeasurable harm. Weaving together a murder mystery, sexual ambiguity, and characters with hidden identities and agendas, Nick Nolan offers listeners a deliciously witty novel about the "puppet" who wishes only to be a real boy. Strings Attached is also a surprisingly heartfelt story about coming-of-age and coming out - not necessarily in that order.

    A surprising treat!
Luke Daniels has become one of my favorite narrators. He transforms this story from just an OK coming of age/coming out read, to a truly wonderful experience. I don't think I would have enjoyed this story as much if I had read it. The POVs constantly changed and the story drags a little. But Mr. Daniels made me really enjoyed tagging along on Jeremy's journey and tragic adventure. I look forward to the next audiobook in the series, Double Bond, which is Arthur's story.
Wasn't expecting to like it so much
I really enjoyed the play with the Pinocchio story threaded throughout the book. It was subtle and well executed rather than an obvious "re-telling" of a fairy tale set in a modern setting. It was a bit slow to start, and there were a few kind of tedious trope moments (denial of orientation long past when it is reasonable, crush on the hot jock, etc.). In spite of those things, once it got going I found that I was sucked in.
Maybe it is my own "daddy" issue's, but I felt that the sore subjects that Nick Nolan touched on in so far as relationships with parents and finding substitutes when biological parents fail really resonated. I fell in love with Arthur. This is for sure a coming of age story, and not awash in hot gay erotica, though it does have a few good moments.
Luke Daniels is one of the narrators that I think I always enjoy.
Just for the economics of it, I wouldn't spend a credit, but it is worth the whyspersync reduced pricing deal for sure.
    Teenage identity story : (
Nope, not my kind of story. It was too teen oriented with adult themes. It was definitely a teen type of story about a teen guy realizing that he was gay. I feel they should have labeled it as a "young adult gay fiction."
Furthermore, I felt a little insulted the way that the author portrayed the female characters in the book. I absolutely hated the way the the narrator, Luke Daniels, used a high pitched irritating voice when he read the female lines.
The end of the story is open for a follow-up novel, however, I am confident I will not want to read it.
    Badly written, banal and boring.
