He takes her to recuperate in England, but the terrible consequences of what happened in Penang are never far behind. Was not sure I could get thru this book.......
This was my first Andy McNab book. Some of the terminology from this British writer had me scratching my head.. The protagonist comes across as wimpy in this story. He cares for Kelly but his job interfers, with all his plans. I did not care for the ending at all. Thanks but NO thanks. Amarillo Turtle
    DULL, DUMB AND BORING!
I bought this book thinking I was getting an action pack thriller. This book is dull, dumb and boring. The hero is anything but. DO NOT WASTE MONEY.
I love the way the author weaves his plots

    Publisher's Summary:
U.S. Air Force aerial warfare expert Major General Patrick McLanahan has been demoted and moved back to a desk job. Keeping a keen eye on what's going on with old enemies, he notices that Russia's heavy bomber and tactical bomber bases are busier than ever. He tries to get his superiors to pay attention but is ignored. Russian president General Anatoliy Gryzlov is determined to punish McLanahan for a previous bombing of a Russian air base. To make his point, Gryzlov launches an all-out sneak attack on America that devastates our strategic air forces.
McLanahan has collected information he needs to plan a counterstrike that could stop the Russian war machine dead in its tracks. But McLanahan is no longer in charge of Air Battle Force, his combat unit of the future, and the Russian sneak attack has left the embattled U.S. president with few options: retaliate with every weapon in his arsenal, even if it triggers a global thermonuclear war; agree to a cease-fire on Russia's terms...or listen to a disgraced and discredited young bomber commander's long-shot plan of attack. To prevent a destructive stalemate, Patrick McLanahan may have to take matters into his own hands.

    Wow! Non-stop Action
This is not an independent book but is a sequel to "Air Battle Force". Listen to the two together. Any gap between the two will make the second not make sense. This book is action from start to finish. The author continues from the prior book when you thought all was well. Needless to say, it is not. It is fantastic.
    Long term Dale Brown Fan
I am followed the series since The Flight of the Old Dog was first released. The hate for Patrick gets old but the flying and the overall story line is great.
    Robert's Review
Overall this is a very good book. the narrative is very good. The story line is easy to follow. Do get this book.
    Disappointed, too far fetched
This book starts out interesting, and then begins to drag. Once that happens it's easy to notice how many things about Brown's version of warfare seem just a little too far beyond imagination to enjoy. I'm not talking about the plot - that is far fetched, but interesting. I'm talking about the military technology. Some examples are below if you want spoilers.
Also, much tedious information is provided that doesn't add to the story, and is sometimes even repeated. The reader of the book had a great range of characters, and enthusiasm, but this book was hard to finish.
    Technology blunders:
    - A satellite radio transceiver placed in a person's body (specifically abdomen) that allows a person to communicate world wide. (Think about the power required to get an omni-directional signal up to a satellite coming from your abdomen!)
    - Instant range gate information from ESM intercept bearings.
    - Nobody seems to notice powerful jamming, except the unit being jammed, so surprise is not lost. ESM receivers for hundreds of miles would light up like Christmas trees. For example a fighter's comms & radar are powerfully jammed, but the wingman and AWACS a few hundred miles away don't seem to be alerted.

"McNab's great asset is that the heart of his fiction is not fiction: other thriller writers do their research, but he has actually been there." (Sunday Times)
    Members Reviews:
    Rubbish narrator. Bring back Thornley.
Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Colin Buchanan?
Paul Thornley, hands down. No contest. Buchanan ruined it. I would have given this a five star rating had Thornley been the narrator.
    Any additional comments?
Rubbish narrator. I would love to hear the unabridged version to this, as it was quite difficult to follow with certain aspects of the story being reduced.
However, I got the gist and it was a short, enjoyable listen. Mcnab is my favourite, the only thing with this audiobook was he did not stick the Paul Thornley, as he had done with so many of his other books. Paul T IS Nick Stone. This just wasn't the same with Colin Buchanan.
As boring as it is long!
Having read and listened to most of Mr McNab's books I was quite looking forward to this one but was so disappointed.
The Sunday times says he researches in detail because McNab's actually been there. And didn't I know it! Most of the book is spent describing his enviroment in such detail it gives you brain freeze. Most of the action occurs in the last hour as an afterthought that 'oh yeah a book is supposed to have some entertainment'.
Unless you are in need of a good sleep give it a miss.

    A Lifelike Knot of Possibilities
At first I thought this was going to be "The Spy Who Fell Into the Cold War." The setting was right; the characters were available, but then, like life, it veered into an unexpected alley. So I thought it was going to be about romance and trust and danger. But the danger wasn't from the embattled governments or other outside influences in the divided city or the divided society; the danger was from inside the relationship, from inside the individuals. Then, like life, the story veered again, coping with danger, and danger was like a voracious beast intent on devouring the trust and the romance. Only the ending of the novel doesn't ring true for me, the looking back, the untying, the rekindling; these are the postscripts to a Hollywood movie, the way we'd like things to be, under control and logical, but not very lifelike.
    A little gem
I read it entirely by accident and could not put it down . Well written, good character developement and portrayed spying from a down to earth perspective and honesty. There are no heroes, we see people with all their faults and idiosyncracies, stumbling through life. A work of fiction but set around an event that really occured.
I knew Berlin in the cold war era and the book and characters made me have a certain nostalgia for a time which is now gone forever( thank God ) and the players of the game, US, Brits and Germans and of course the Russian bear . I reccomend it.

Extremely good just up until the end.
I just loved this book and the characters. The reader was excellent. High adventure and intrigue, history...everything about it was perfect until the end which turned out was just lobbed off. You never find out what happens to everyone, it just ends. I personally really hate that and so I gave it 4 stars.

Red Storm Foiled by Abridgement Manuver
I am unabashedly biased toward unabridged books but I can usually deal with most abridgements; not this one. Anyone who has read Tom Clancy is familiar with his extraordinary level of detail and setup work that goes into each of his novels. That verbose, often dry setup is what makes the action sequences, the punchlines if you will, so powerful. This abridgement of Red Storm Rising is so severely cut down, all you get is scattered action sequences that do not fit together very coherently. Add to that the fact that this classic Clancy pre-dates the character of Jack Ryan and you have nothing to hold this abridgement together at all.
In an attempt to save the story, this audio book is augmented with full sound effects and music, which does add back some of the imagery but none of the meaning. F. Murray Abraham does a terrific job narrating this story but because the editor stole most of his script, even he can't save this one.
If you know the story from the print version, this audio book is worth having as a refresher but if you are looking for your first Tom Clancy on audio from audible, I suggest you go with Debt of Honor and Executive Orders, the best two Clancy audio books available from audible. If you chose to get Red Storm Rising, be sure you get the least compressed version your player can handle, format 3 or 4, so that you can get the best reproduction of the sound effects and music.
Almost all Tom Clancy audio books are abridged and not one of them is improved by it shortening. Red Storm Rising is all but killed by it.
    Butchered
The abridged version is far too short. RSR is a great book, but this recording is a big disppointment. It's leaps from one scene to another without context.
    Ouch!
What a disapointment. The book has been shreaded. Wait for the unabridged version and what is with all the sound effects in this revision. They are far to distracting, and often over power the readers voice. Don't bother with this version of the audio book.
    Very Disappointing
While this is one of my all-time favorite books, I'm greatly dissapointed in the audio version. When other abridged versions, of shorter books, are 5-6 hours in length, I cannot imagine why the producers would issue a 2 hour version of this book. What you get is a bare-bones outline of only a few of the story lines. Save your money.
    Agree with all the others.
I should have read the other reviews before ordering. I will not be making that mistake again.
This abridged version of a classic is so bad it seems like it is a battle between the Soviet army and the U.S.

Then Jack forgot about the rest of his work, because on his first day, an extraordinary document crossed his desk. The new Pope had just delivered a private ultimatum to Warsaw: If the government persisted in its repression, he would feel compelled to resign the papacy and return to Poland.
That was going to have consequences.
In Moscow, another man was contemplating those very same consequences. Yuri Andropov, the chairman of the KGB, did not like what this meant for him or for his nation. All it took was one man to cause everything he had worked for to crumble...and all it took was one man to stop him. The Pope was very powerful - but he was also mortal.
And so it begins, an almost unthinkable plot - a plan to bring down not just leaders, but nations. Ryan will find himself in the middle of a chain reaction, a high-stakes game meant to shake the world...and in which a novice CIA analyst might just be out of his depth.

    Don't abridge Clancy!
I haven't listened to the abridged version of the book; I read the unabridged version. So this is an attempt to encourage Audible to make available an unabridged version. It's hard for me to imagine that anyone who enjoys the exquisite detail and elaborate plotting of Clancy's novels will ever be satisfied with an abridged version. If others share this view, plaese let Audible know about it so that we can enjoy listening to Clancy books as they should be.

    Don't listen to unabfidged Clancy
I really was disappointed by this audio. I hope it's because it was abridged. It was the poorest Clancy I have 'read'. Stay away.
slow to start but good overall
It took me a while to get into this book. The building of multiple characters in the beginning was a little drawn out, but once the book got going I was eager to hear more. Not an edge of your seat thriller, but definitely worth my time. Three hours of Red Rabbit a day during my commute was far more interesting than the looping news on NPR.
    Not worth the time.
This is by far Clancy's worst effort. I've read all of his other books and this one never got off the ground. It might appeal to those interested in all the "details" of CIA actions but is more of a history lesson than a novel.
    Fun Book
Billed as an early Jack Ryan, Jack has only a little to do in this novel. It was short, abridged, I believe. Many of he characters used in previous novels are introduced. Fun book, on to my next Clancy novel.

But when Ben chances upon Jimmy Cavanaugh, an old college friend, Cavanaugh draws a gun and tries to kill him. In minutes, several innocent bystanders are dead, as well as Cavanaugh, and Ben is on the run, plunged into an unspeakable nightmare.

Good story until the far fetched ending
I loved listening to this story. It grabbed me from the very beginning and kept me hooked all the way until almost the end. The plot was almost believable and conspiracy types might have even thought Ludlum was on to something. The plot spiraled down to a far-fetched and unbelievable ending however and ruined an otherwise excellent listening experience.
I couldn't put down my player!
Once I got started, I found excuses to pick up my audible player and continue the drama: I was getting up at 5 am to ride my exercise bike (which I rarely do) and listen. I was ignoring the morning radio news during my commute to listen. I took a long walks on the weekend to listen. When it was over, I was happy I had my life back.
    The best of Ludlum!
This is one of Ludlum's fastest-paced, best reads. Paul Michael again is simply the best!
    Average
This was my 3rd encounter with a Ludlum book and it reads just like the first two. While engaging and exciting, the end left me wanting something a bit more original than the ususal gift-wrap, disney ending. If you are happy enough with the Cussler/Ludlum/Koontz serial novels then you will likely enjoy this one just fine.
    A great read
I will not be surprised if the story is true, there are alot of facts pointing to the truth of this story, except with a different flavor. A very engaging story, as I heard it on my way back and forth to work. Being an analytical and picky reader, two thumbs up to the author.

    Loved it!
Drummond is a wonderful character, especially as read by Mr. Rubinstein. What a perfect reader for this book! Wry and sarcastic and perfect for the first-person POV. Can't wait until I get another credit so i can listen to the next one!
(And I don't care that Specialist 7 doesn't exist anymore.)
    Splendid effort all round
I share something in common with the author of this book, apparently, in that I know absolutely nothing about the US Army. As a result, mistakes of detail didn't trouble me. The story was much more complex and interesting than I had anticipated, and the reader was brilliant. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
A great story told very well
There is no better combination of Brian Haig as author and John Rubinstein as reader. The story flies!
Author has no clue about the US Army
When I first saw this, being an US Army veteran of 10 years, I felt it would be interesting. But after hearing someone be refered to as the rank of Specialist 7, I quickly knew there was going to be problems. This story is supposed to take place in the 1990's, well the US Army eliminated the rank of Specialist 5 and above in 1985. So that and other things (like a CWO staying in the same Special Forces A team for 17 years!) just soured this whole audio book for me, and I doubt I would ever listen to anything by this author again.
