    Publisher's Summary:
Sairey Ellis's father is writing his memoirs. As an ex-security man whose life work has been in Africa, his revelations will be explosive, blowing the lid off British and Kenyan support for Idi Amin, and exposing the degree of unofficial British connivance in Rhodesian sanctions-busting.
He must be persuaded not to publish. This complex thriller from the acclaimed Reginald Hill takes a cool and pitiless look at the role of the security service, and its effect on the individuals, both innocent and knowing, which become caught up in it.
Gripping, assured and perceptive in its psychology, here is a chillingly convincing portrait of the repercussions of a life of espionage.

    So, So
My first and only other Reginald Hill book was The Woodcutter which I loved. Wanting more I tried Dream of Darkness. It was OK, but nowhere near as good as the Woodcutter. I wish there was someway someone could let me know if any of his other books measure up.
Stunning as ever, both reader and the writer
Hill is full of insight, compassion and perception. He can also be laugh-aloud-funny, 'tho not here, and is always a wicked story teller. Barret is one of the few truly rock solid readers, he never gets in the way of the prose. His characterisation is spot on, pacing and intonation also, so you don't notice you are being read to. Just you and the writer.
    Reginald Hill never disappoints.
Complex and complete character development. Lots of twists & turns. Kept me engaged to the very end.
One thing wrong, it was too short!
What did you love best about Dream of Darkness?
Excellent narration by Sean Barrett. This story is fascinating with deep historical points of interest. Very enjoyable.
    Pulls you in
As always, Reginald Hill writes beautifully; the characters are well limed, the plot... intriguing. Sean Barrett is a brilliant reader. My only regret is the novel wasn't longer.

When she joined St. Kilda's, the elite security consulting firm, Emma Cross thought she'd left behind the blood, the guilt, and the Tribal Wars that defined her life at the CIA. Yet trading spying for investigating yacht thefts didn't alleviate the danger. Now, the same good instincts that got her into trouble at the agency might be the one thing that will help her survive her latest case.
St. Kilda and Emma are tracking a yacht named Blackbird. Emma knows the boat's intended cargo is lethal. What she needs to find out is whether it's biological, chemical, or fissionable. And she's only got seven days to uncover the truth...or a major American city will be lost. Fortunately, she's working with a new partner as menacing and distrustful as the worst enemy she's ever facedMackenzie Durand.
But Emma and Mac aren't the only eyes watching Blackbird. Taras Demidov, an expert in extortion and execution in the pay of oligarchs running the Former Soviet Union, is also waiting in the shadows, determined to intercept a fearsomely powerful arms dealer with the money, weaponry, and connections to alter the geopolitical balance.
    Critic Reviews:
"Lowell's primary focus on espionage rather than on romance is a major change from earlier novels, albeit a pleasing one." (Publishers Weekly)
    Members Reviews:
Excellent plot - but not a romance....
I am a longtime fan of Elizabeth Lowell - she writes great suspense and this one is no exception. My only disappointment is that she has really gone more toward straight suspense and romance is definitely way down the list in her plots. While I enjoyed the story - the relationship between Mac and Emma was tepid at best and not believable. I miss the intensity Lowell captured in her earlier books - such as the Donovan series. The dynamics between family and lovers, etc. That is definitely not the case in her current books...the book is good though - if you want straight suspense with a romantic plot as an afterthought.
    Death Echo
I love Elizabeth Lowell & like the previous reviewer I really enjoyed this book. However, I hated the narrator--it felt like all the people in the story were very distinct speaking old ladies. I had a hard time tuning her out to enjoy the story. This is a first for me. I have never had that problem before & I have many audio books.
    Ugghhhh! NO! To Beth McDonald!
This is the first time I've listed to this narrator...and it will be the last! I purchased this book a month ago and have not been able to finish it. I love the St. Kilda series, but this narrator is painful. She reads as if she has a toothpick in the corner of her mouth! Why, Why, Why!
I couldn't tell you anything about the book, other than I've tried to start it 4 times and can't get past the annoying reader! Reader -1 Star! I'm hoping what I can take from the book earns 2.
    A Good Listen!
I learned more about ships in this story and their operation. This was a solid story about piracy and theft. Well thought out and researched. Both characters were realistic, and the story had plenty of intrigue and action. The romance was pretty good, not earth shaking but enough.
A good read all in all.
    Another good Elizabeth Lowell story
This story was fun and exciting.

    Isaac Bell and the navy
In this 3rd novel, Isaac is involved with a case involving 3 "brothers" who are rampaging throughout several areas. He gets called into Van Dorm office in New York to meet a new client whose father had apparently just committed suicide. The daughter insists that her father could never do this, nor could he sell trade secrets to foreigners. Isaac agrees to look over crime scene as it hadn't been gone over by the navy, who was trying to keep this quiet. He finds evidence of forgery in the suicide note as the signature is more like the father's signature at a much younger age than current. Isaac makes a promise that the Van Dorn agency will look into the death as well as completing the capture of the 3 brother band. They are able through questioning figure out who set up the fake suicide but 2 other developers are also found dead. Bell is approached by a top Admiral who fought in the war with current President Theodore Roosevelt. He explains to Bell about the new ships being built and the new guns. He also explains about the shielding material needed for the new unmaded ships called Hull 44. There were only 5 people plus the Admiral who were involved in developing the means to achieve this. Of the 5, 3are dead, so the Van Dorn agency places the remaining 2 under 24 hour watch. This doesn't stop the attackers but they soon figure out that one person called the Spy is behind everything. Like all Bell stories, we get introduced to the suspect early in the story but only after Isaac Bell gets beat up a few times, does he realize who it is. Isaac and Marion finally decide on a stone for her ring and solve the crime.
Hey! The Spy is a Success! Read it.
I really like this series so I find it hard to find fault with the story. I didn't look for any faults as some others have in their reviews. I guess it might have been a little better but then books are written for our enjoyment and if it catches your interest right away then the writer has done their job. Sometimes, not always is the writer right on the button but then not everyone nor every book is destined to be the "Great American Novel".
I have read what I would consider "dead" books and have struggled through them and then wanted to go burn the book. And they were books that fell within my interests. This book was far from being a dead book and I liked how well it tied in actual historical facts with the fictional story itself. So to the critics, try reading something else if you don't like the story.

Would you consider the audio edition of On Dangerous Ground to be better than the print version?
    No. Both are good :)
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
I would use less characters. and more movement of the story to be based more on intrigue. It read well. But it was more about mundane characters and events rather than an old plan that had gone down years ago.. somehow the story i felt was not one of his better one's
What about Michael Pages performance did you like?
Oh he is amazing.. I love the way he emulates the females voices.... all parts of it was superb !!!
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

    Any additional comments?
I love his books . and the Irish influence it has. Truly fascinating work.
    Higgins Keeps You Engaged
I like the characters in the Higgins books. This is no exception. The action is very quick. Characters are well developed. Plots very believable.
    Another excellent Listen!
    Any additional comments?
Another fantastic listen by Higgins! Just love his style and his characters. Dillon is a great character. Michael Page is a wonderful reader. I am a huge George Guidall fan, but I am quickly becoming a Page fan. He easily switches from character to character flawlessly. Book to book he is extremely good at maintaining each character and their style of speaking and attitude. Great book, great plot, always had me on the edge of my seat! :Looking forward to the next book in the series! Thanks Jack!

    "Poor on all counts."
    Review:
I've been listening to audible spy stories for as long as I can remember and this is one of the very worst. The writing is pompous and boring and reminded me why I don't read/listen to Ludlum any more (and I read all his early books). This is my first time with the narrator (Reading) and the last. She has a Laura Linney voice (no offense Ms Linney) -- totaly expressionless -- flat as a mill pond. She uses the same tone of voice for 70 mph car wrecks as she does for making toast in the morning. She does a wonderful Brit accent, but unfortunately that is only 2% of the story. She does enjoy saying "pea coat" which the author uses about every 5 pages or so, and it's refreshing to hear her find something she enjoys in the book. All-in-all, could have been a good yarn, but this author/narrator combo took care of that. Save your hard-earned money.
    Another copycat book
I forced myself to listen all the way to the end but often while standing in line at places or sitting on planes...just passing the time and figuring, what the heck, I paid for it, I'll listen. It was another book about secret documents and all kinds of clues that are just bizarre and not believable (and I'm willing to suspend a LOT of disbelief when I read). So, I would have to say, thumbs down on this one. The narrator, however was good with her many voices. A few word pronunciation problems but not many.

    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Espionage
    Publisher's Summary:
The heroines of Lauren Willig's best-selling Pink Carnation series have engaged in espionage all over 19th-century Europe. In the sixth stand-alone volume, our fair English heroine travels to India, where she finds freedom - and risk - more exciting than she ever imagined.
Everyone warned Miss Penelope Deveraux that her unruly behavior would land her in disgrace someday. She never imagined she's be whisked off to India to give the scandal of her hasty marriage time to die down. As Lady Frederick Staines, Penelope plunges into the treacherous waters of the court of the Nizam of Hyderabad, where no one is quite what they seem - even her husband.
In a strange country, where elaborate court dress masks even more elaborate intrigues and a dangerous spy called the Marigold leaves venomous cobras as his calling card, there is only one person Penelope can trust.
Captain Alex Reid has better things to do than play nursemaid to a pair of aristocrats. Or so he thinks - until Lady Frederick Staines out-shoots, out-rides, and out-swims every man in the camp. She also has an uncanny ability to draw out the deadly plans of the Marigold and put herself in harm's way. With danger looming from local warlords, treacherous court officials, and French spies, Alex realizes that an alliance with Lady Staines just might be the only thing standing in the way of a plot designed to rock the very foundations of the British Empire.
    Members Reviews:
    Unsympathetic Main Character
Like other reviewers, I loved Willig's first three books. It's a bit of a mystery why in this book she lavishes so much energy on a main character who is so lacking in redeeming qualities. Willig has been producing books at a suspiciously rapid rate over the past several years, but the problem with this book doesn't seem to be haste or laziness on her part. It's more like she's forgotten what attracts readers to books: great characters who we care care about having larger-than-life adventures.
    Nothing But a Mean Girl
I finished this audiobook reluctantly. The mystery/espionage plot is pretty much non-existent. For 3/4 of the book we just get the tale of the "heroine", Penelope. Rarely have I encountered such a totally unattractive character. Penelope's back-story doesn't justify her lack of development and growth or make her at all sympathetic. She is petulant, childish, selfish, egocentric, mean spirited and altogether a nasty girl. Frankly, I don't know why the hero bothers. It appears the author thinks we should admire this woman because of her bravado and impetuousness or feel sorry for her because she had a difficult childhood and dislikes herself. Frankly, I just wanted to kick Penelope and tell her to go grow up. That really doesn't happen, even during the predictable self-excoriation that Penelope inflicts on herself after her husband's death -- which is still all about her. I suppose one would say that the book is well written, since the lead character is certainly vividly drawn. But why should we care? Most of the book is spent regaling us with way this woman ignores the feelings and concerns of everyone around her. This is frankly boring and irritating. The mystery that Penelope and Alex are supposedly trying to unravel is secondary.

    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Espionage
    Publisher's Summary:
Winter in New York City: Amid sleet and snow, Doc Ford is at the Explorers Club with his new friend, former (and maybe current) British agent Sir James Montbard, researching a jungle expedition, and awaiting the arrival of an attractive U.S. senator with whom Ford has become more than friendly. Her car pulls up, she starts to get out, and the unthinkable happens: an assassination attempt right before their eyes. Ford engages, critically injuring one of the attackers, but the senator vanishes - dead, authorities fear - until they receive her kidnapper's ultimatum.
Ford goes on the hunt, with the help of his friend Tomlinson, on an odyssey that moves to the Florida Keys and beyond. If what happened before was unthinkable, it's nothing compared to what they discover. The senator's captor has a definite agenda, and to make sure she isn't rescued before his 36-hour deadline is up, he's put her someplace he's sure no one will find her: he's buried her alive....
Randy Wayne White's novels have always won praise for their remarkable imagination, intrigue, and some of the best characters in suspense fiction. Nothing, however, will prepare his readers for the extraordinary chilling events of Dead Silence.
    Members Reviews:
Like a DOC out of water
Story was OK but Doc belongs in Florida. Only thing entertaining about the story was the Kid. Want to hear more about him and relationship to Doc. Needed Tomlinson and the Dinkin's Bay crew to put the humor in the story-sadly missed. Sure hope his next is better and more like the rest of the series.
    Doc without Sanibel
I have loved this series, but "Dead Silence" is not the equal of most of the early books. It's got action aplenty, and I liked the new young character, but "Doc" just isn't at his best away from Sanibel, his lab, and the recurring local cast. Prime entries of this series rely on a wonderful sense of the author's love/hate relationship with modern Florida. Perhaps Randy Wayne White is not as enthusiastic as he once was.
Anyway, don't let this be your first experience of Doc Ford. Go back to the earlier books of the series.
Loved the Narrator as much as the book
Another great book from Randy White. I got the book mainly because of the narrator. I had listen to him on another White book and loved him as much as the book. The characters were different, but fit exactly the part that White and me want them to. Try this book and you will not be disappointed.
A bit different then others in the series
I was very pleased with the book. I laughed in parts as I listened to it. I thought it was well written and the book moved along nicely. I think the way all the various characters were brought together at the end in a great way. I was surpised at some of the connections.
Doc was Doc in the book.. with his glasses held with fishing line . Enjoy the book for what it is.
Good old fashion fun and a place to escape!
    Distracting Reader
I am a big fan of Randy Wayne White and have read all his previous books. Perhaps because I could never imagine the voice of the reader belonging to Doc Ford, I found his reading style distracting. I stopped listening, bought the book and finished it the same day. It is a great story, just not when performed by this reader.

    Excellent Story
One of Reginald Hill's best. Loved the O'Henry ending. Enjoyed it as a book and very much enjoyed this audiobook telling.
    I did finish it!
I absolutely never identified with the main character (Molly). Her every action was the opposite of what mine would have been. I found it a little disorienting and maybe just a little interesting (hence the star). The only believable and likable character was (Molly's) father. I enjoyed the narrator.
we're all allowed the odd slip up...
Sadly I found this book tedious in the extreme and a far cry from the usually excellent Reginald Hill books. I am a huge fan, originally for the Dalziel and Pascoe books although The Stranger House is in my top ten books ever. Find it hard to believe that both books are by the same author. I tried to persevere to find out what happened, but somewhere in Europe I stopped caring.... :(
    Don't bother
Would you try another book written by Reginald Hill or narrated by Julia Barrie?
I have purchased many other Reginald Hill books in the past
What was most disappointing about Reginald Hills story?
Why bother writing this? It's like he wrote it when he was a student and brought it out to capitalise on his fame in order to make more money.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
    Awful, northern accents
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Spy's Wife?
    Whole thing
    Any additional comments?
Save your money. Even if you've enjoyed other things that he's written.
    Feisty woman
I did not enjoy this story as much as I have other titles by Reginald Hill, but it is worth listening to the end for the quiet humour of the author and his characters. Where is the husband? Is he alive? The wife, and it seems like a lot of other people are watching and waiting for him to appear and, despite my ambivalence I, too, was sucked into wanting to know.

Tom Cain has done it though, with conviction and power.... John Lee's compressed and controlled delivery, coupled with his impressive ear and range as an actor, allows a complete suspension of disbelief." (AudioFile)

    Surprisingly pedestrian
Wait? An elite killer one step ahead of everyone until the end where he is saved by the hard-shelled tender-hearted lady of the streets. How is that nobody else has ever written this story? Nobody that is except everyone. There are some entertaining elements but the same predictable story. Good for soft slow and safe listen with gratuitous sexual intrusions. The narration however was excellent with impressive use of diverse accents.
    Predictable
I guess good for guys who like bravado action and descriptions of women's anatomy to make a thriller interesting. Not very complex or sophistocated and we're supposed to buy the premise that Princess Di was murdered by an international conspiracy. Give me a break!

    Great book
This is my idea of an espionage novel. A ton of twists, plotting and intrigue, and all absolutely believable. No James Bond moments. No miraculous escapes relying on super human abilities or gadgetry, and the World isn't about to end. In fact, there really is no win or lose and the goods guys aren't a ll that good, the bad guys not all that bad. The characters are well thought out and are portrayed as real people. It's hard to find a good spy novel. This is a winner.
    Top in Genre
The audio recording of The Spanish Game is excellent. Simon Vance's reading enriches the storyline, which is a unique tale of a spy "coming in and out of the cold." Cumming's characters are multi-layered and complicated making this a must read for anyone who loves good writing and especially good writing in the spy genre.
    Excellent narration but moody book
Simon Vance does a great job with narration and voices. This novel has received lots of praise from spy genre fans, but it is only enjoyable for readers who like novels with an anti-hero and mostly unlikeable characters. There's not a lot of action; it's more about whether each character is really who he/she seems. I got tired of it and found it a bit of a downer.
    slow start, but worth it
Would you try another book from Charles Cumming and/or Simon Vance?
    absolutely.
What did you like best about this story?
you didn't see where the story was going for a long time. And that's a delight.
Have you listened to any of Simon Vances other performances before? How does this one compare?
several. and he always does a good job. He never tries too hard with the accents and voice qualities.
    Any additional comments?
Cummings is a very good writer and he should not be only thought of as a mystery-genre writer.
    Great for spy buffs
This is a very convoluted story, as any spy story should be. The narrator has to switch to Spanish now and then. I am no judge, but it sounded convincing. I occasionally had to rewind to absorb the plot details. Overall the experience was very enjoyable and I can't wait for Cumming's next novel
