    Publisher's Summary:
An underground newspaper reporter becomes the target of a European spy web in the looming shadow of World War II Paris in this heart-pounding thriller from the master of international intrigue, Alan Furst.
Paris, 1938: a sensational story hits the tabloids: a murder/suicide in a lovers' hotel of an Italian political emigre and the wife of a prominent French politician. The assassination soon emerges as the work of Mussolini's secret police; the male victim was the editor of a clandestine newspaper that opposed Italian fascism. This is the story of Carlo, the man who replaces the victim as editor of the newspaper - the man who becoms the next target for Mussolini's police, Stalin's propaganda apparatus, the M16 and of the Gestapo, even as the war grows closer every day.
    Critic Reviews:
"America's preeminent spy novelist." (The New York Times)

    A good listen
Alan Furst is wonderful at atmosphere but slim on plot development lately - this book is a return to his best, like The Polish Officer and Night Soldiers, which is still his best book in my opinion. Foreign Correspondent has strong characters, a likable hero and an interesting story line. Well worth the time.
One of the best of a great series
If you could sum up Foreign Correspondent in three words, what would they be?
    All Time Great!
What other book might you compare Foreign Correspondent to and why?
The other eight in Alan Furst's first nine in the series that were narrated by George Guidall.
Have you listened to any of George Guidalls other performances before? How does this one compare?
Many, many times over the years. Been a recorded book listener for almost 20 years. George Guidall is one of the all time great narrators and I consider his performance of the Furst's novels to be a highlight of his career. I've actually read a couple of the Furst novels in this series and they rate a 4. George elevates them to a 6. It saddens me that he stopped narrating Furst's novels. The subsequent recorded novels were, at best, a 2. A case, that is all too common, of the narrator ruining the novel.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
A story of real resistance spies in World War II. They were scared, tired and bored most of the time.
    Any additional comments?
The saddest part of the book and narration is "The End"I've listened to all the first 9 novels in the series at least 3 times and a few like "The Foreign Correspondent" 5 times.
    A Return to Furst
A nice solid Furst novel. I took a small pause from reading Furst because his books had started to all blend together (maybe by design), but 'The Foreign Correspondent' was like a well-timed nosh. The story was tight and well-paced, there was an interesting memoir-within-a-novel that worked rather well since the protagonist in the novel was the ghost-writer of the memoir.
Anyway, not on my top-shelf of Furst's novels, but it was a good Night Soldier's addition that focused on the period of 1938-1939 when Italy (under Il Duce) formally aligned with Hitler's Germany while also bringing back a lot of Furst's crossover characters in small appearances (as well as the perpetually cameoed >).
    Spy Novel Fan
Would you listen to Foreign Correspondent again? Why?
No. I very rarely listen or read novels more than once.

May 1941. At four in the morning, a rust-streaked tramp freighter streams up the Tagus River to dock at the port of Lisbon. She is the Santa Rosa; she flies the flag of neutral Spain and is in Lisbon to load cork oak, tinned sardines, and drums of cooking oil bound for the Baltic port of Malmo. Only she is not the Santa Rosa, she is the Noordendam, a Dutch freighter that sails for the Intelligence Division of the British Royal Navy and she will load detection equipment for a clandestine operation on the Swedish coast - a secret mission, a dark voyage.
Here is an epic tale of war and espionage, of spies and fugitives, of love in secret hotel rooms, of courage in the face of impossible odds.

    Masterful
Furst and Guidell magnificent. Keep these two creating WWII brilliant historical military fiction . Please omit narrator Gerroll ,a story killer for
    five star novels.
Mouches volantes through dark vision of history
A non-typical Furst novel, 'Dark Voyage' is primarily centered on a Dutch captain (DeHaan), his multicultural crew, and the merchant marine perils that faced sailors from the Mediterranean to the Baltic seas. Every book Furst writes appears to grow from the same thesis, but stretch into entirely new areas. This was a nice deviation from his normal East European or Parisian locals.
With every Furst novel, I become more and more amazed at the nuance of his novels. He seems content to write his novels in the periphery of history. His characters float past major events like mouches volantes through the dark vision of history. He wants to tell the story of minor characters, minor battles, minor countries that together all made a major difference in WWII.
A bit different for Furst, merchant marine focused
Enjoyed, Furst fans shouldn't be disappointed, another Noirish tale. Really like the narration.
    Guidall superb as usual.
good insight into struggles and uncertainties of that horrible time. George Guidall is one of my favorite narrators.
    WW2 Merchant Marine suspensive life.
Would you listen to Dark Voyage again? Why?
Maybe, the story brought back memories of the lives of many northern Europens life during the war. Suspense in torpedo infested waters the book put you right in to the action.
What other book might you compare Dark Voyage to and why?
    None
What about George Guidalls performance did you like?
Set you right in to the nuances of a merchant marines life during the war.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    Yes.
    Any additional comments?
I grew up among these people, as many of my uncles were in the situations described in this book.

    Publisher's Summary:
Who killed Whiskey 2-2? And why wont it stay dead?
A marine sniper team on a mission in tribal territories on the Afghan-Pakistan border, Whiskey 2-2 is ambushed by professionals using the latest high-tech shooting gear. Badly wounded, the teams sole survivor, Gunnery Sergeant Ray Cruz, aka the Cruise Missile, is determined to finish his job. He almost succeeds when a mystery blast terminates his enterprise, leaving a 30-foot crater where a building used to be and where Sergeant Cruz was meant to be hiding.
Months pass. Rays target, an Afghan warlord named Ibrahim Zarzi, sometimes called The Beheader, becomes an American asset in the region and beyond, beloved by State, the Administration, and the Agency. He arrives in Washington for consecration as Our Man in Kabul. But so does a mysterious radio transmission, in last years code. Its from Whiskey 2-2: MISSION WILL BE COMPLETED. CONFIDENCE IS HIGH.
Is Ray Cruz back? Has he gone rogue, is he insane, or just insanely angry? Will he succeed, though his antagonists now include the CIA, the FBI, and the same crew of bad boys that nearly killed him in Zabol province? Not to mention Bob Lee Swagger and a beautiful CIA agent named Susan Okada who gives Swagger more than just a patriotic reason to take the case.
Swagger, the legendary hero of seven of Hunters novels, is recruited by the FBI to stop the Cruise Missile from reaching his target. The problem is that the more Swagger learns about what happened in Zabol, the more he questions the U.S. governments support of Zarzi and the more he identifies with Cruz as hunter instead of prey.
With its hallmark accuracy on modern killing technologies, Dead Zero features an older, more contemplative Swagger, but never lets up on the razor-sharp dialogue, vivid characterizations, extraordinary action scenes, and dazzling prose that define Hunters landmark series.

A new generation of Swagger stories begins.
I thoroughly enjoy Stephen Hunters work. This novel, like all the others in the Swagger series, did not fail to impress. Dead Zero opens the door for an entirely new generation of Swagger novels which needless to say left me excited to see what will come next.

    Dead? Maybe this book?
Plowed through this book on the power of it's author, but wasn't too impressed. There was a lot of action, yes. But, even in it's condensed version, was 9 hours or so and contained a lot of droll discussion. What must the unabridged version be? That meant there was little character development--only the bad guys were new characters and they didn't last for the duration. The plot was pretty mundane...no, boring...chase after a terrorist. I'm not giving up on Clancy, yet!
    Interesting
Another writer carrying on the Tom Clancy legacy. A recommended read for those that enjoyed Clancy's books.
    A sorry disappointment
I was really looking forward to this audio book, but it has been a chore to get through. If this had been Mr. Clancy's first book, we never would have heard from him again. Slow, plodding, overly political and over descriptive--even in the abridged version. There is nothing special about the plot and the story takes forever to move along. I did think Lou Diamond Philips did a wonderful job--too bad the literature is so weak. Time to forget this author and try out someone at the top opf their game instead of at the end of it... like John Sanford's new Virgil Flowers series.
    Classic Tom Clancy Action
I bought 'Dead or Alive' as I am going on holiday in a few months and wanted to have a few books stocked up to listen to on the plane and on the beach.
Unfortunately within 3 days of buying the audio-book I'd listened to it all. I just wanted to listen to the first bit to check it was downloaded OK but then I was hooked.
In terms of the actual plot and characters, it's typical Tom Clancy, if you've enjoyed the Rainbow Six and other 'Ryan' books you'll enjoy this one. It's very much the same but different.
It's gritty military/spy fiction - probably not going to win any prizes for the most cunning twist in the tail but it's very easy to listen to, particularly if you don't want to get bogged down in the detail about if things would really happen like that in real life. From memory in previous books the accuracy seemed to be a bit better - particularly on bits that were central to the plot.
There's a whole host of things that are just a little bit technically inaccurate but after all it is supposed to be fiction. For Example - There's a bit about fake aircraft transponders that was a bit iffy.
Overall an absolute classic Tom Clancy plot that I found difficult to put down.

    Brilliant Story, great narration
Yet again Joe Finder delivers another great story with plenty of twist and turns keeping you going from page one straight through to the very end of the story. I would call this a real page turner (if it makes sense to say that about an audio book). The narration really complimented the story very well. Would I recommend this, yes absolutely. In my opinion Joe Finder is one of the best thriller writers at the moment.
    Intense
Would you listen to The Zero Hour again? Why?
I have listened to several Joseph Finder books and The Zero Hour is my new favorite. It was intense and exciting. A real thriller!!!
Good but dated at this point
This is or was a good story by Joseph Finder. It takes place in New York after the first World Trade Center bombing. So a lot of the discussion of the terrorist environment is very dated. It is fairly predictable but deep character stories and discussion of the technology then is good. Worked for spending time in the car.
    Perfect 5 stars
I must say, from start to finish, you are locked in, a ride from the gate. I started on Sunday & finished on Tuesday. Recommended on all levels. Enjoy
    Exciting but too much detail
This was a good story that held my attention. It got a little bogged down in technical details, most of which was unnecessary to the plot and just slowed it down. Also, of course, it's dated, almost obsolete, because technology and terrorism have progressed so much since this was written. Still, it is an exciting story.

    Members Reviews:
    Glad I stuck it out.
I had to work at this one because the plot line was complex. Just as I was going down one road, something happened that made me question if I really understood what was happening. In fairly short order, I came to understand that was the point. Brilliant, in retrospect. If you're a fan of the safe "beginning, middle, end" story arc genre, this book is not for you. But if you can park expectations and just go along for the ride, it is a most gratifying read. The narrator was excellent though the sound quality wasn't great. Otherwise it would have been 5 stars across the board.
    insightful and thought-provoking
John le Carre tosses the reader back and forth between bitter enemies; Israel and Palestine. A captivating read.
Superb. lé Carre at his best
Very, very good. lé Carre gives you a fascinating, terrifying look into international terrorism that will leave you reading newspapers uneasily and watching the news with a jaundiced eye for the rest of your life.
Whatever side of the Arab / Israeli conflict you believe yourself to be, you'll get a naked look at the other side. It's cause for pause.
Essential reading that will haunt you.
Good, but not Vintage Le Carré
Michael Jayston, as usual, delivers an excellent performance in the narration of the novel. The story itself however, and in particular the recruitment of Charlie, a young left-wing English actress, by Israeli Intelligence, strains credulity and I found the development of the plot and its denouement singularly unconvincing. One doesn't expect a-thrill-a-minute in a Le Carré novel but even so I found long sections of it tedious. Judged by the standard of his best work I would describe it as good but it certainly is not in the same league as the Karla trilogy.
    Such a disappointment
I am a le Carre fan, but I really am finding this book tedious in the extreme, I should have read the reviews more thoroughly, it is very political, which is not my taste. I know le Carre does always have an element of politics through his books, but I usually find his stories woven really well, but this one doesn't grab me at all. I think it is because I cannot particularly like these characters - so I lost interest - and perhaps don't care about them.
I may try leaving it for a while and picking up later! Certainly I regret buying this one - but I seem to think it was on offer - so I probably haven't lost anything.

I can NOT believe this is stephen hunter
The narration was poor, but I could NOT follow this story! I re listened to several sections and may, relisten to the whole book. I can't even say what it was about! Some guy that was betrayed some time in the past coming back to avenge betrayal? Something like that. Maybe it was the lack of voice changes or something. It sounded like a Reacher book. Maybe it was the similarity of all the hundreds of similar books out there, I really don't know but this book is HORRIBLE.

Another HOME RUN for Ted Bell!
What made the experience of listening to Warlord the most enjoyable?
Warlord could easily be ripped from the headlines-but the insights and understandings shared by Bell give meaning and depth to the geopolitical miishmash of the news. This is a not just a great read-it is a worthwhile read. BTW Alex Hawke is not a James Bond guy-he is much deeper and much more complex and in many ways represents the tough choices facing the real modern man! GET IT AND ENJOY IT!
What other book might you compare Warlord to and why?
IT STANDS ALONE IN THIS AREA!
    Which scene was your favorite?
Hawke is always battling not just evil on his own and the opposing side-he is battling the grinding societal effort to crush every individual and create sameness. Over and over again in this story and in the otther Hawke novels-Alex must save not the world and the girl-but do it in a way that saves who is and whishes to become!
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I love Bell's books and they always make me both laugh and cry.
    Any additional comments?
I WOULD URGE EVERYONE TO CONSUME ALL OF BELL'S BOOK-ASAP!

old style Le Carre meets new
I've been reading Le Carre for only 3 years and tend to like his less-well-regarded later novels better than his older classics. Audiobooks are, however, giving me better appreciation of the old, and THIS audiiobook seems the perfect marriage of Le Carre's traditional theme of innocents consumed by a compromising Brit insider-elite with the more overt social concerns of his later novels.
I found this as well-written, plotted and characterized as traditional LeCarre, but at the same time it's a very accessible listen.
    Great Le Carre
Fascinating story, terrific characters. One of my favourite writers on excellent form. Wonderful reader too. Did all the dialogue brilliantly, which made the book even more exciting to listen to.
    Waste of time
Would you try another book from John le Carré and/or Michael Jayston?
I will try earlier Le Carre books
What was most disappointing about John le Carrés story?
Far too much descriptive detail and little story with an ending that made me think he got bored with the book as well as me.
Have you listened to any of Michael Jaystons other performances before? How does this one compare?
No, but the performance was fine.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Our Kind of Traitor?
    All of it
    Any additional comments?
This book makes me think Le Carre has lost his way.
    A THOROUGHLY ENJOYABLE,RIVETING MASTERPIECE
    Any additional comments?
The story is riveting. The rendition excellent-It had me interested to the last second. It's contemporary, the characters well-developed and plausible. All in all another masterpiece by John Le Carre.
    Great book, very disappointing reading.
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
The first book I have bought from Audible that I was unable to finish
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Very disappointing reading. Two examples: An Australian character is given a very bad cockney accent. Gail, the main female character, is read in a breathy voice that reminds my of Marilyn Monroe in those old films, Gail is a successful barrister! She would not speak like that.
The reading became so irritating, for these and other similar reasons, that I have been unable to finish the book.
If the reader can't do accents and voices accurately, he or she should just read it straight, without any attempt to be in character.
    Any additional comments?
My first serious Audible disappointment. I will need to be much more careful in my purchases in future.

I first listened to this book about 10 years ago and have loved each subsequent reading so much that I was delighted to find it available on Audible. The concept of twin brothers whose lives revolve around flying, but with one being the pride of the Luftwaffe and the other the pride of the Allies, is creative, as we see the story unfold from both the Allied perspective and that of the Nazis.
I found the premise highly creative, and I loved the careful way that Higgins built up the story to try to give it the veneer of being a true story, even when we all know that is is fiction.
I have listened to many of Jack Higgins' books, but this is my favorite by far!
What was one of the most memorable moments of Flight of Eagles?
Throughout the whole book, I kept waiting for the brothers to meet each other in combat, but when they do, the book gives a nice twist to the story.
