In the throes of the Cold War, the Soviet Union engineers the financial collapse of the West.
The world financial market has become unbalanced. Nations in South America, Africa, and Eastern Europe are trillions of dollars in debt, and a default by any one of them could start a domino effect that would eventually topple the economies of America and Europe. Across the Western hemisphere, economists such as Tom Pike are devising a brilliant plan to head off the collapse. The situation is dire, but with transatlantic cooperation there should be time to stave off disaster.
But something is not as it seems. Before long, Tom realizes that the economic turmoil was deliberately created. The culprits are in Moscow, where a plot is in motion to totally destabilize the Western economy. Now Tom must stop the scheme before the dollar collapses.

    Publisher's Summary:
A globe-spanning, heart-pounding epic thriller of good vs. evil, political intrigue, and what it means to be a patriot - from New York Times best-selling author Oliver North.
The year is 2032. The NRA has been outlawed; the U.S. military has been gutted; Conservative Christians, dubbed ANARKS, have been labeled a global conspiracy and have been largely driven underground. The Caliphate is now a superpower, residing in Israel. The White House is occupied by a repressive Progressive regime, obsessed with the upcoming presidential election. Then, the kidnapping of an MIT physicist who is privy to sensitive scientific information from a Houston energy conference by Islamic terrorists sets in motion a high-stakes international game of cat and mouse.
Peter Newman, security consultant and former decorated war hero, is determined to rescue the scientist. The president, fearful that her reelection will be endangered by the reemergence of terrorism, will stop at nothing to keep the kidnapping a secret. The White House condemns the kidnapping as the work of ANARKS, and has the authorities label Newman an ANARK. Newman is forced to evade the law while also preparing a daring rescue with the help of his war hero father, a patriotic U.S. senator, and a band of special forces operatives.
Fast-paced, gripping, and filled with authentic detail, North has crafted an edge-of-your-seat tale - and offers an ominous look into what can happen in an election year.

The story was pretty good, but the narrator wasn't
I've been an audiobook listener for many years. This book won't stand out in my memory for any long period of time. While the author wrote an interesting tale, it was torn to shreds in it's presentation by the narrator. The narrator of this story did such a bad job I honestly feel sorry for Mr. North. The narrator reminded me of a middle school kid struggling through a drama club play rehearsal while reading the lines right off the script. He stumbled through sentences, couldn't pronounce words, and gave the general impression that he didn't prepare. I feel if another narrator would have read the book, it would have been more interesting. I'm sorry, but there isn't much more to say than that.
    Excellent story ruined by narrator
Would you try another book from Oliver North and/or Peyton Tochterman?
Oliver North, yes. Peyton Tochterman, no.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
The plot was very interesting and kept me going despite the agony of listening to the slow, stilted reading of the narrator. I mean, who talks like that??
What didnt you like about Peyton Tochtermans performance?
His reading was very slow. He had no appropriate voices for the different characters. He had no style at all for the military dialogue. The way he said "Local" at the end of every time stamp for each chapter segment was just silly. The way he stilted through the pronunciations of the many military and government acronyms was just painful. It was a very interesting story that was just ruined by this reading.
Do you think Heroes Proved needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
I think a follow-up story would be very interesting, but I will read it myself rather than listen to Peyton Tochterman again.

an obvious picked up and put down work in progress
What was most disappointing about Robert Ludlums story?
what the secret manuscripts in the end supposedly contained (highly blasphemous) and the disjointed plot.
Have you listened to any of Grover Gardners other performances before? How does this one compare?
    great reader
    drawn out
1st half was great second half seemed a bit drawn out and almost unnecessary altogether.
    Not my Favorite
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
I got bored with this one. I love Ludlum's stuff, but the characters were too hard to follow and I found it hard to listen to. I gave it back
If youve listened to books by Robert Ludlum before, how does this one compare?
This is the first Ludlum book I did not enjoy
Which character as performed by Grover Gardner was your favorite?
None of the character development worked for me
Do you think The Gemini Contenders needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
    I didn't finish it
    Any additional comments?
I'm a big Ludlum fan. Others may enjoy this one but I stopped about a third of the way through.

The worlds attention is focused on the historic plans of the U.S. and Iranian presidents to lay down their swords. But on the African continent, one man holds the power to obliterate the peace by unleashing terror and global chaos - and no one sees it coming.

Only by chance are American agents now learning of its existence, and it may already be too late.
Born from the ashes of Dreamland, the covert strike force Whiplash is armed and ready to spring into action - led by Dreamland veterans Danny Freah and former ace pilot, now Washington insider, Breanna Stockard. But Aberhadjis web of death is wide and well concealed...and the doomsday clock is ticking.

    Great Book
What did you love best about Whiplash?
I liked the character Danny in the early Dreamland books
Who was your favorite character and why?
    Danny, hard charging and flawed
    Any additional comments?
Didn't like the fact this book jumped into the future, since I was on book 10 of Dreamland, that was in 1998. Whiplash jumped to 2012 I believe, that was a surprised I didn't like.
    What happened?
Good story but what happened from the last book to this one?
    To many unanswered questions.
    good, but different
wasn't expecting the jump in time, but still an amazing book as always. looking forward to the next one
    AWSOME
Great variety of action and humor LV flash and Boston a very good read well done
    NOT a Dramland Thriller!!!!
This book was a huge disappointment. I have read all the Dreamland books before this and everyone had me interested start to finish. This book literally made me fall asleep several times. Its set about 15 years after the events in Romania from the last book. The main characters we all know and love are now gone. Zen and Brianna are no longer pilots and have a kid. Dog is mentioned a couple times in passing but thats it. The book is focused, rather poorly, on a new Whiplash team led by Danny Freah, no Megafortress or ANY dreamland tech for that matter. Unfortunately I will not read the rest of the series and I am VERY disappointed by that.

Over four million books sold. Translated into over a dozen languages.
    Updated October 2011
Who polices the world of covert operations? Enter the Cellar, the most secret spy organization hiding deep within the United States.
Deep in the forests of Kentucky, a girl is held captive.
In Oklahoma, a young preschool teacher is murdered in front of her students.
In the Panhandle of Florida, a college undergrad is kidnapped from a nightclub.
These seemingly unrelated crimes catch the eye of the Cellar, the ultrasecret cell of operatives set up to police all other government agencies. Cellar operatives Gant and Neeley, along with profiler Susan Golden, must track down those responsible. But these are not ordinary criminals. They are a highly trained Special Forces sniper team. Crisscrossing the United States as new Cellar head Hannah Masterson calls the shots from up high, the Cellar operatives soon find themselves being targeted. Whoever is behind this knows the ultra top-secret Cellar's tactics all to well.
Underneath this web of death, deceit, and revenge lies an even more shocking crime...a conspiracy that powerful men will sacrifice their lives - and the lives of their families - to protect.
    Critic Reviews:
"...delivers top-notch action and adventure, creating a full cast of lethal operatives armed with all the latest weaponry. Excellent writing and well-drawn, appealing characters help make this another taut, crackling read." (Publishers Weekly)

    Average at best
I'm all for hard-bitten heroes and lots of action, but this one's plot line is so convoluted and leaves so many questions that it's mediocre. Good thing it's short.
    Good political action thriller.
I never tired of the story. Although I got sidetracked a couple times along the way, I went back and caught up so as to ensure that I didn't miss any of the many creative twists and turns. I'll read all of these I can get my hands on. Thanks!!!
    Secret Military Organization
This story was interesting. I don't normal follow this genre. I was pleasantly surprised. I would recommend this audio book to anyone who likes to read special ops type books.
Forget Gant - I want Emily to join the Cellar!
Excellent narration. I actually have the Kindle version, as well, and tried switching back and forth. Without the narration, it feel flat and I had to listen to the entire book.
I like Gant and Neeley in the same way I like Jack Reacher - he's practical, smart, well-trained and he's not led astray by labels. There are good guys, there are bad guys, and he sorts them out. He's also willing to make sacrifices, which is a change from so many other books in the genre that are focused on saving everyone on the government's side, killing everyone else and letting authority make the rules.
Tension. Characters you care about. And masterful action
Holy smoke. Hardly a sentence went by without an increase in tension. I was guessing even at the end. Yet it all came together exactly as it should. My husband and I listened while on a road trip, and he was always eager to get back to this story.
I'd say, however, that the title doesn't fit. It's somewhat descriptive, but the storyline offers so much more.
I totally recommend this book and the audio version.

    Dated
Many years ago I read several Ludlum books and loved them. Now decades later I have picked up a couple including Chancellor Manuscript and am left wondering what I saw in this author at the time.
This book misses on several levels.
ONE: the writing style is very dated. Thrillers have gone through a metamorphosis over the last 40 years. Writers like James Patterson have changed how we the audience interact with the written word. The Chancellor Manuscript reads like the 39 Steps. The language is stilted and the dialog far removed from daily life.
TWO: The plot. Its structured around Hoovers death and the files he kept on people in order to hold sway over them. This was news back in the day and the readers must have had that extra involvement, but now its ancient history and so much of the plot centers around this and a conspiracy that feels bland.
THREE: Story structure. The story is told mostly in the 3rd person. Its raw. The story moves from one character to another in strange ways. Its slow. The story meanders from one point to the next not giving the audience very much.
    So...
    - Narration is not great. I think this narration might be 30 years old. I remember this narrator from back in the day. He's not very good.
    - Dialog is poor. No one talks like the characters here do. Very badly done.
    - Female characters are 2 dimensional. Think James Bond babe and nothing else.
    - Protagonist is dumb. The main character here 'Peter Chancellor', is a smart author uncovering international conspiracies, but he acts like a dupe from page to page.
Skip this book. Its not good.
    Ludlum is Terrific
It had been awhile since reading a Ludlum novel. Listening to this book reminded me of the great skill and writing style he has. Truly a masterfully written story. A page turner you hate to have end.

A classical Bond in an elegant style
Would you listen to From Russia with Love again? Why?
I will return with pleasure to this audio, for the perfume of that times so well described in the book and most of all, for the incredible voice of Toby Stephens.
What did you like best about this story?
The book has some of the best ingredients for success : espionage, mystery, love story, friendship, travelling with one of the most romantic conveyance - the Orient Express
What about Toby Stephenss performance did you like?
His outstanding performance took me in the middle of the story, mixing drama, mystery and feelings with extraordinary easiness. Listening to this audio book with all his old fashioned characters, impersonated by Toby Stephens with so much style and depth, it's a literary experience which turns into a personal one and that is why you will always want to return.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I have had many moments when I hardly stopped the device.
Truest Of Bonds. Bravo Mr Fleming
Much has obviously been written elsewhere about the history of Agent 007 in literay and filmic terms and will be written again through the future in all forms. I read the majority of the original James Bond books in my later school years before college with the exceptions of Man With The Golden Gun and The Spy Who Loved Me and loved them from day one.
As such when I heard of the Bond Reloaded series I was very enthusiastic and based on what I just finished, I was right to be so.

Wonderful Reading of a Classic Story
This is a superb presentation by Bill Nighy of this classic early James Bond tale. The story itself is rather comically dated in terms values and culture we are after all a long way from the early 1960's. However in terms of a ripping yarn superbly presented you really couldn't go much better than this. Bill Nighy covers all the characters superbly, giving each one life without ever entering into parody. I look forward to investigating others in this series, all read by experienced actors which make such works a pleasure.
    I like it
Realistic boys own adventure where JB doesn't always gets who he wants but saves the day. A fun listen even though Bill Nighy is a little different to the other narrators. Come to think of it, should super spies play Bridge?
    Great
excellent, not a fan of the female voice but otherwise amazing performance and engaging story.
    great listen
The movies seem to have damaged 007 stories too much. Almost like these stories are other stories.
Lots of period,1950's drama and really enjoyable. Surprised me I loved this one so much.I liked Bill Nighy reading as he gave Bond a maybe less than macho super hero persona and more lovable, in spite of his cold eyes. I have to look at Flemming again.
The little Nighy 'take' at the end could have been deleted. not an interview, just comment.
    Bond as it should be.
What a great story. One of my favourite Bond adventures. Great 50's settings and the story unfolds in a brilliant way with a good story line and people in it.

    An okay listen
Strange book this because it could have been a great listen but falls short. Some of the plot devices just stretch credulity too far. In some types of book the author asks you to suspend disbelief and that is fine but not in a thriller - you have to be able to believe it could happen. There are times in this tale when I found myself thoroughly frustrated by the clichéd dialogue too. Overall it is okay but no better than that.
A good listen, if a bit confusing at times
I'm a fan of Gerald Seymour, but I think it might be better to read this book rather than listen to it. The plot of MI5 agents seeking revenge for the death of a former colleague takes place in the Costa del Sol. So many characters are introduced, without much background on each, that it was rather confusing to keep track of them all. However, it's a good story, with a rather dark depiction of in the post crash Costa and some very scary Russian mobsters- sort of "costa noir". The action drags a bit at times and some of the characters are poorly drawn with rather naff dialogue. Nevertheless, it kept me interested and I was on the edge of my seat waiting to find out what how it ends.
    Marvellous
