    Narrator: Christopher Lane
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 12 hrs and 56 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-03-14
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 101 votes
    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Espionage
    Publisher's Summary:
Ryan Kealey now knows he'll never really put the game behind him. He's seen too much, and the instinct is too deeply hardwired. But the game itself has changed. Between tense interagency "cooperation" that gums the works, and an overreliance on data-crunching and wiz-kid tech, today's US intelligence service has lost a step to its ever-bolder, viciously adaptable global enemies. And thanks to an incredible discovery in the Arctic, those enemies now have a nuke - capable of unleashing unthinkable terror.
To hunt down the devastating package before it can be used, Kealey forms an unlikely partnership with the young Farsi-speaking nuclear physicist Rayhan Jafari. But once on the ground, with technology and their by-the-numbers command failing them, they're on their own - trusting only their guts and each other - to conduct the dirty business of combating horrific destruction.

How to make a dirty bomb.
Enjoyed this book. I would give it four and one half stars if I could. The reader was good. Especially when he had to do the Arabic words. Mispronounced some English words though.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys espionage books.

From award-winning thriller writers Brett Battles and Robert Gregory Browne.
After an op in Istanbul goes sour, all Alexandra Poe wants is a little down time, and a chance to finally sell off the family vacation home in Key Largo which carries too many painful memories.
Instead, she finds herself on a private Bahamian island, working with Deuce and Cooper to relieve a human rodent of some very sensitive codes, and to take down one of the world's most notorious terrorists. Just another job for Stonewell International. Or is it?
What Alex doesn't realize is that she's about to get caught up in a twisted maze of shifting allegiances that forces her to face those painful memories head on--even if it's the last thing she ever does...

    Very disappointing!
Takedown is the second book in the Alexandra Poe series cowritten by Brett Battles and Robert Gregory Brown. Although it is somewhat better than Poe, Book 1, it is still a major disappointment.
Brett Battles is one of my favorite authors. His (written without a coauthor) thrillers in the Project Eden series and Jonathan Quinn series are among the very best of the mystery/thriller genre. The suspense in the Project Eden series matches or exceeds that of any other novels I have read.

    Publisher's Summary:
The President knows it's a perilous, high-risk assignment. If he gives the order, he has the opportunity to take down a global menace, once and for all. If the mission fails, he would face certain impeachment, and the threats against the nation would multiply. So the president turns to the one team that can pull off the impossible: Will Robie and his partner, Jessica Reel.
Together, Robie and Reel's talents as assassins are unmatched. But there are some in power who don't trust the pair. They doubt their willingness to follow orders. And they will do anything to see that the two assassins succeed, but that they do not survive.
As they prepare for their mission, Reel faces a personal crisis that could well lead old enemies right to her doorstep, resurrecting the ghosts of her earlier life and bringing stark danger to all those close to her. And all the while, Robie and Reel are stalked by a new adversary: An unknown and unlikely assassin, a woman who has trained her entire life to kill, and who has her own list of targets - a list that includes Will Robie and Jessica Reel.
    Critic Reviews:
"The Innocent is Baldacci at his absolute best.... Baldacci provides the reader a non-stop pulse pounding ride that will keep you on the edge of your seat into the wee hours of the morning...Five Stars." (Examiner.com)
"Baldacci is a master when it comes to writing about small-town conspiracies and a lone hero who fights against all odds to clean up corruption. The narrative moves slowly, so the reader has a chance to solve the case along with Puller. It might seem straightforward, but the final reveal will surprise even hardcore thriller junkies." (The Washington Post on The Forgotten)
"This book is a definite one-day, 'edge-of-your-chair' read, with an ending that is a complete surprise. One of the best Baldacci's since Absolute Power, this is one that will have all suspense readers enthralled." (Suspense Magazineon The Innocent)

    Reel and Robie
Once again the dynamic duo performance was brilliant. Great job and the storyline kept me attached as always.
Stick characters and a preposterous plot.
This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
I often find that the "preposterous plot/super action agent/CIA jerk director genre" works well for something that helps pass the time on the exercise machines at gym. But the only redeeming virtues of this one were: 1) It is short; and 2) [Better yet] it's essentially broken into segments that were even shorter. Translation (in the jargon of old melodramas): At least when the train is bearing down on little Nell while she is tied to the tracks, the author does make you endure 50 pages of nonsense to hear what happens next!
Has The Target turned you off from other books in this genre?
    No.
What do you think the narrator could have done better?
The narrators did well. If anything, having an audio performance may have helped mask the that the author's non-development of characters was a disaster.
    Any additional comments?
An author needs to do more than write: 1) This is a good guy.

    Publisher's Summary:
Sophie Kohl is living her worst nightmare. Minutes after she confesses to her husband, a mid-level diplomat at the American embassy in Hungary, that she had an affair while they were in Cairo, he is shot in the head and killed.
Stan Bertolli, a Cairo-based CIA agent, has fielded his share of midnight calls. But his heart skips a beat when he hears the voice of the only woman he ever truly loved, calling to ask why her husband has been assassinated.
Omar Halawi has worked in Egyptian intelligence for years, and he knows how to play the game. Foreign agents pass him occasional information, he returns the favor, and everyone's happy. But the murder of a diplomat in Hungary has ripples all the way to Cairo, and Omar must follow the fall-out wherever it leads.
American analyst Jibril Aziz knows more about Stumbler, a covert operation rejected by the CIA, than anyone. So when it appears someone else has obtained a copy of the blueprints, Jibril alone knows the danger it represents.
As these players converge in Cairo in The Cairo Affair, Olen Steinhauer's masterful manipulations slowly unveil a portrait of a marriage, a jigsaw puzzle of loyalty and betrayal, against a dangerous world of political games where allegiances are never clear and outcomes are never guaranteed.

    In the widening gyre
I love great genre fiction. Steinhauer represents some of the very best of modern espionage literature. While he hasn't yet reached the level of le Carré, he is now firmly on the top shelf of literary spy fiction with peers like le Carré, Littell, Furst, etc.
The Cairo Affair is an important bookmark in espionage fiction. In this 21st Century, post 9-11 world, Steinhauer (along with le Carré) is the goto fiction writer to understand the nuances of private-contract espionage, post-Soviet global realignments, and the moral failings of a waning American empire (all with a non-US-centric outlook on espionage and foreign policy). The Cairo Affair highlights the fact that the CIA is slowly losing its place as the gravitational center of the spy universe and seems to have lost its principled, idealistic foundations as well.
    Global Ripples
'Nothing is ever what it seems' -- hold onto that mantra; it will serve you well as a reminder while traveling through the pages of this globe spinning political conspiracy that will have you feeling like you are navigating in the modern political panorama through a house of distorted mirrors. A smart, complex story of espionage that relies not on the thriller aspects, but on not knowing the intricacies of a tangled web of spy vs. spy.
The novel spans 20 tumultuous years, 1991-2011: Muammar Gaddafi, Hosni Mubarak, the Arab Spring, civil wars, Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, Yugoslavia... and leaked political cables via WikiLeaks. The historical significance of those years is powerful when compressed and reflected on, and I suggest listening carefully to the *Collection Strategies* that precede chapter 1. The story jumps back and forth through the years, and employs different points of view, which helps once you chalk up any *contradictions* to point of view and not actual contradictions . The cast of characters is daunting at times, some critics suggest superfluous. I didn't find that the case.

Grossartig.

    Publisher's Summary:
When Moslem fundamentalists blow up a key Soviet oil complex, making an already critical oil shortage calamitous, the Russians figure they are going to have to take things into their own hands. They plan to seize the Persian Gulf, and more ambitiously, to neutralise NATO. Thus begins Red Storm, an audacious gamble that uses diplomatic maneuvers to cloak a crash military build-up. When Soviet tanks begin to roll, the West is caught off guard. What looks like a thrust turns into an all-out shooting war, possibly the climactic battle for control of the globe.
    Critic Reviews:
"Sheer grit and perserverance turn the tide in this chilling, fleshed-out war game. Readers emerge elated and breathless, with a new vision of war and its wins and losses. Clancy will win an army of fans who will be looking for more." (School Library Journal )
"He constantly taps the current world situation for its imminent dangers and spins them into an engrossing tale." (The New York Times Book Review)
"Heart-stopping action...entertaining and eminently topical." (The Washington Post)
    Members Reviews:
Excellent book, plenty to keep you listening
Would you listen to Red Storm Rising again? Why?
I have re-listened to sections of the book, it has quite a lot of detail which suits a second listen
What was one of the most memorable moments of Red Storm Rising?
    The battle descriptions
What does Michael Prichard bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Consistency with a lot of the other Clancy books I've listened to. He's become the go to voice of the earlier Clancy novels
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No, there is a lot to digest
    Any additional comments?
Excellent book, well worth a listen. I would rate it in my top 3 of Clancy novels
    Red Russia, oil and war.
What did you love best about Red Storm Rising?
Red Russia and their Marxist views failing yet again.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
It kept me wondering how bad things could have been if the Soviet Union didn't collapse.
Realistic view on what could have been
I'd read this book some 15 years ago or so. Listening to it again now, with the hindsight of more recent events and the state of world politics as it is now (in 2014) it's quite prescient about how things could have developed (particularly as regards "non-state aggressors"). The story actually moves along at a decent clip, so it didn't feel like you were plodding away through a long novel. That said, One of the weak points that I remember from reading the book applied to the audio version too. It's easy to lose track of all the characters, especially the Russian ones, as to who is who exactly. This is very true when it comes to players who you haven't seen/heard for a few chapters later on in the book.
Michael Prichard did a reasonable job narrating this, but he could do with a bit more variation for the characters.

Harding does odd jobs with the only guy he trusts implicitly, his handler and manager, Tommy Sands. They bodyguard, escort tourists around the Bay Area, and do bail bond, skip trace work for a lawyer named Tess Connagher.
Two events throw Harding's seamy life in the shadows out into the light. Strobert is ordered to enlist Tess Connagher's law firm to act as an intermediary with Harding in order to protect an outspoken Afghani woman whose family Harding protected long ago. The woman's father requested him, and the state department realizes they'll be off the hook if anything happens to Samira Karim while under Harding's care. Secondly, Harding fights a particularly brutal fight with a Russian mob backed fighter named Van Rankin who hates Harding. They'd had words.
The YouTube video of Harding's subsequent beat-down of Rankin goes viral along with many of his prior fights. When Rankin's Russian mobster backer, Alexi Fiialkov pushes for a rematch on the UFC circuit, CIA Agent Strobert sees infinite possibilities since the United Arab Emirates has part ownership in the UFC. Some matches would be taking place in Dubai, where the CIA knows targets of opportunity show up from time to time.

Kevin Pierce really brought the characters to life, and hit all the right notes in menace and humor! Pretty cool!

Which character as performed by Kevin Pierce was your favorite?
The Dark Lord was awesome! I laughed so hard people were staring when I was in public! I also really loved Al, and The Cleaner, Director, Crewella, I'll call her whatever she wants!
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
It made me laugh, and made me cheer when the idiots were dealt with with extreme prejudice! Mr Deleo pulls no punches, and I really like that he hits so hard!

Jake soon realizes there are others on a quest to find it as well. Others who will kill to get to it first.

Now one of my New Favorite Authors
If you could sum up Breach of Power in three words, what would they be?
    Action. Suspense. Fast-paced.
What does Scott Brick bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Again , Scott Brick brings life to any story.
    Any additional comments?
This is a really good follow up to "The Toymaker". I have listened to all three in the series consecutively and can not wait for Chuck Barrett to write another. I figured out the mystery about 1/2 way through but the ride to the end was thrilling
Pursuing suspense, the story was lost
It is an OK read if your just looking for s suspense novel. Unfortunately the story loses believably. To much for the sake of sensationalism. You will find yourself saying "really" this is just stupid.
    It has its moments...
The story and style is right along with other novels such as Brad Thor. The story is good and the mystery does play along well. Narration with Mr. Brick is awesome as expected. I enjoyed the story and would recommend this if you like the action, mystery type books.
A different, but outstanding, espionage novel!
In Book 3 of the series Jake Pendleton has moved to a job with a company that sub-contracts to the US government and he has a new partner, Francesca Catanzaro. Their assignment is made by the president of the US. The centerpiece of breach of power is a book from the WWII period found in ice in the Alps. The content of the book threaten the life of the president of the US. Others are also seeking the book and they are willing to kill to get it.
Breach of Power is a truly outstanding thriller made even better by Scott Brick's narration.
Career as a mortuary employee on hold...
Would you listen to Breach of Power again? Why?
I don't listen to audio books more than once. At least, I try to avoid it.
Would you recommend Breach of Power to your friends? Why or why not?
Only if you like these types of sprawling action thrillers. It is classic for the genre, but not exceptional.
    Which scene was your favorite?
The resolution in the mortuary was fascinating, as much for the drama and family politics as anything else.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Some of the graveyard scenes are fascinating.
    Any additional comments?
The story is a bit messy, the characters clear but sometimes illogical. The background is interesting, and the resolution is clean. On balance, a decent offering in this thriller genre. The Scott Brick performance is good ( although sometimes abit flat ) and, on balance, this isn't a bad use of a credit.
