    Learning from a novel
I love it when a novel teaches me something about the real world. Airframe is certainly in that category. The narrator is also very good.

    Good, but not very plausible
I enjoyed the story, and I liked a lot of the technical detail, but much was quite implausible. No test company or pilot would allow an outside reporter on a functional test flight, nor would a test pilot ever intentionally exceed the design limits of an in-service airplane to duplicate an event thought to have occurred in revenue service.
I think this is is certification stuff--if even that. Pretty contrived in that regard.
    Still a fun story. Thanks.

    Airframe=Well written
VERY BELIEVABLE & fast paced. VERY WELL WRITTEN. I WOULD DEFINITELY RECOMMEND ANY OF CRICHTON'S BOOKS!
    Interesting
I enjoyed it though at times technical. Characters' personalities developed well. Plausible story and realistic.
    A good listen
I enjoyed Airframe! Definitely a good book that's well-written and does a good job at balancing science/drama/action.

    The Worst
I wish I could give this zero stars, of all the books I have listen too during the year, this was the worst. I threw all the disk I burned out. I wasted a book choice. The reader of this book was just babbling on. No emotions.

    Title: Single & Single
    Author: John le Carré
    Narrator: John le Carré
    Format: Abridged
Length: 6 hrs and 10 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-14-00
    Publisher: Simon & Schuster Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 62 votes
    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Espionage
    Publisher's Summary:
In Single & Single, the writer who both epitomizes and transcends the novel of espionage opens with a haunting set piece, then establishes a sequence of events whose connections are mysterious, complex, and compelling. This is a story of corrupt liaisons between criminal elements in the new Russian states and the world of legitimate finance in the West. le Carré's finest novel in years, it is also an intimate portrait of two families: one Russian, the other English; one trading illicit goods, the other laundering the profits; one betrayed by a son-in-law, the other betrayed, and redeemed, by a son.
    Critic Reviews:
"[Le Carré is] more than just a great storyteller. In Single & Single, he captures the Zeitgeist itself." (Tom Wolfe) "...the finest imaginative social historian of the postwar years." (The London Times Literary Supplement)

    Missing the magic
I normally avoid abridged versions of books, but I picked this up because it was read by Le Carre himself and I thought perhaps that meant it would be OK. Le Carre is a reasonably good, if somewhat uneven reader. However, I was disappointed in the abridgement. What makes Le Carre novels great in my opinion - all the poetic detail that paints the characters and their surroundings - was missing. (I went to my paper copy of the novel to see if it was there, and it was.) Pretty much only the plot was left. It was an OK plot, but not the magical experience that full length Le Carre audio has been for me. (I highly recommend all of the full length Le Carre novels narrated by David Case/Frederick Davidson.)
    True performance art...
Another great novel by the Dean of spycraft. For inveterate LeCarre readers, having the author read his own work makes this read infinitely more rich. This listens like an old time serial radio drama with Mr LeCarre performing all of the characters. I want to go back and read his other novels now that I've heard him speak through these characters
    Another Fine LeCarre Tale
Enjoyed every minute of it, and superbly narrated by the author. I highly recommend if you enjoy LeCarre's carefully plotted stories and rich character paintings.
    More Father & Son Tension
If you liked A Perfect Spy, this is a great followup. A great listen.
    Not his best work
It seemed to come together all too quickly in the last quarter, almost like he felt he needed to wrap it up in time to keep a dinner date.
I loved it, up until then.

    Caught me by surprise....
I can usually figure out whodunit halfway through a book. This had me guessing up the climatic chapter - and then I kept saying, "no, no, no way". It's so nice to have a book catch me by surprise. It was well written and the characters were well drawn, enough so that I cared about what happened to them. If you like mysteries, and good trial dramas, add this one to your list.
    Superb legal thriller.
I listen to Richard North Patterson every few months. Each time I do, I remember how much I like his stories and put another of his books into my wish list. This book is full of the interesting, intellectual dialog and plot twists that keeps the book interesting until the very end - even for a long book. I highly recommend this book.
    Enjoyable
If youre a fan of character development and lengthy and intense dialog between the players this may be of interest to you. I judged this as a good book, falling just short of great for two reasons: 1) I prefer books that have a little faster pace and 2) the descriptions of the victims murders were just a little too graphic and drawn out for my sensibilities. This book is still better than many Ive heard and I have no hesitation in recommending it to others.
    Excellent
Excellent story line. Narrator was great. I was interested through the entire book. It had me wondering right up to the end. I highly recommend this title. I hope this authors other works are as good as this.
    Engaging Story
Fascinating! Patterson is a wonderful storyteller and this book was no exception. Although it dragged in a few places (most notably during his play-by-play accounts of various sporting events), for the most part, this book kept me thoroughly involved. It was easy to imagine the characters and their locale. The character development was exceptional--the inner conflict experienced by one character had me loving him one minute and hating him the next. The true sign of a good audiobook is whether I look for excuses to drive somewhere just to listen.

    very Bourne Identity ish
the plot is complex and historically interesting. there are a lot of components and hidden agendas making this listen absolutley intriguing. this is the only book I have read by him, but it was a terrific "listen" and the reader does a good job. Definitely an old school style novel that is a pleasant change from some of the more recent "trying too hard" novels.
Great story: get rid of the music intros and segue
What made the experience of listening to The Prodigal Spy the most enjoyable?
Enjoyed the story very much, I'm downloading another title by this author as I write this. Music is poorly reproduced and interferes with narration.
What other book might you compare The Prodigal Spy to and why?
    Tinker, tailor ...
What three words best describe Boyd Gainess performance?
    Appropriate.
    Lousy Sound
Liga is right. I'm going to ask for a credit because the sound is so bad.
    Good story, poor quality presentation
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
The book is great -- would recommend the hard copy since the poor quality of the recording really detracts from the enjoyment of hearing the story. The sound quality was poor (very muffled, scratchy), the background music was screechy and caused me to yank out my ear plugs several times. The narrator was great, but his voice, etc. suffered because of the bad production level.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Joseph Kanon is a terrific writer, I always enjoy his books -- they are tightly written, take unexpected turns, one can really get "into" the characters -- this was no exception. This book, like "The Good German" presents unique situations from unique perspectives, presenting an interesting (and educational) look at a political situation that has sometimes been stereotyped in pop movies and books...
What didnt you like about Boyd Gainess performance?
I thought Boyd's performance was good -- the production was awful & the full impact of his performance could not be appreciated properly.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
Depends -- the movie of "The Good German" was a sore disappointment, so don't know.
    Great story, poor quality audio
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
I've read the unabridged print edition of this book and enjoyed it; thought I would try the audio version on for size. The narration is good, but the audio quality is severely distorted.

entertaining but dales books are much better when the detail is included - ie unabridged
    Fun ...
Okay so not the best effort of it genre , still enjoyable to escape with. Well done Mr Brown.
    Tactical and Detailed
Enjoyable, though tactical/detailed, reading that contains multiple scenes of switch position description. The plot involves a maniac Iranian who stirs up action in the region and is quelled by our hero McLanahan flying a modified B-2 that does weird stuff. The characters include some Iranians, portrayed in a childlike manner, as well as some of the US leadership...portrayed the same way. The author continues his tradition of weak characters and very tactical discussions of fantasy military hardware.

    Good quick listen
I read this book when I was in my early 20s and remember really enjoying it. Then the movie with the same name came out and I was excited to see it, until I found out it had nothing to do with the book. This was a book that really stuck in my head and I've thought about re-reading it many times over the years. It's always interesting to go back over something that you read when you were young and see how your tastes and opinions have changed. This time around I found myself zoning out and drifting off. Perhaps because I already knew how it was going to end. I still really enjoyed the idea behind the story, though, and would recommend it to anyone. Because it's abridged it's a really quick and easy listen. The narrator was fantastic. He did all of the accents (Swedish, German, American, British, British slang, female) very convincingly. I have mixed opinions about the music in the recording. I don't normally like music in audio books, however, I felt like it added more to this book than it detracted.
A new twist on an old theme
This book won't disappoint you. It grabs you at the start and holds for the entire ride. The ending will come as a surprise (at least I wasn't expecting it). There were a few areas of the story I found unlikely, but they didn't take away from the story too much. The characters are believable and well developed. Overall, I enjoyed this audiobook.
    Critical -but for the good
I found the book to be both riviting and interesting until the very end. I did figure out what was in the box about 2/3's down the line because it was kind of obvious. Still, I thought the book and its presentation were well done.
    day after tomorrow
I found the exceedingly annoying music added for dramatic effect so distracting that it really ruined the book for me. At times it was so loud that it drowned out the story line.
    The music is annoying.
What made the experience of listening to The Day After Tomorrow the most enjoyable?
This is a good story and a well-written book.
What didnt you like about Edward Hermanns performance?
    I love this narrator.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    Yes
    Any additional comments?
I enjoyed the book, but the music was so annoying that I almost stopped listening. This is the first audible book I've read that had the music in it and I will never buy another one. I'll just read the paper book.

A cutting-edge novel of international crime and its consequences, from Nigeria to Russia to Washington, from the former deputy assistant secretary of state.
We laugh when it pops up in our inbox: the scam letter promising a windfall. We wonder: How does anybody fall for these things? But it is no laughing matter. It is one of the biggest organized crime rackets in the world, it is deadly - and State Department crisis manager Judd Ryker has fallen right into the middle of it.
The disappearance of a young American in London sends Ryker into the heart of a corruption scandal in Nigeria, at the same time his CIA agent wife Jessica finds herself chasing a Russian master criminal known as the Bear. Unknown to either of them, they are pulling at two ends of the same lethal thread, a staggeringly vicious enterprise of piracy, extortion, and murder.
The world is messy and dangerous, Jessica warns her husband. More dangerous than you know. But he is about to find out.

    Greed Corruption and Kidnapping
When Jason Saunders received a letter with an offer too good to refuse, his first impression is that it is a scam. However, the letter contained personal information that was not generally known. When Jason responds it results in his disappearance. Judd Ryker, working for the State Department, is assigned to find Jason. The trail leads to Nigeria, where many such letters originate.
Judd's wife Jessica works for the CIA. As Judd travels to Nigeria, Jessica travels to St. Petersburg, posing as an assassin who does jobs for the Russian mafia. She is given the job of eliminating an official in Nigeria, where their assignments cross and the action takes off. Greed, manipulation, corruption, kidnapping and some memorable characters make this an exciting read.
I received this book from First to Read in exchange for a review.
Looking forward to the next Ryker adventure
I just finished reading Todd Mosses 4th installment of the Judd Ryker series ..* The Shadow List *. Diplomatic/political thriller following my favorite problem solver Judd and his mysterious, slightly more intriguing wife Jessica.. meet the Rykers (not to be mistaken for the Cleavers or the Bradys). Judd is sent to Nigeria to find a way to free a kidnapped young banker .. but wait!. Nigeria , we have a problem!, there happens to also be a kidnapped basket ball player who, while visiting his native country to dedicate a hospital, finds himself taken from his car, hood on head and whisked away.. so.. Judd while you are there , can you work this one too?.. meanwhile in Russia , Jessica is gathering intel on a Russian mob boss.. posing as an assassin for hire.. hired to kill a judge in.. you guessed it , Nigeria!.. and guess who is helping Judd with his negotiations with kidnappers? you guessed it.. that very judge!
oh there is so much more to this book.. so many colorful characters.. so many back stories, so much fun to read. having said that I HIGHLY recommend reading the first three in the series. this one can wait. You need to really get to know the Rykers and this book just doesn't do that for you...read the series .. each book is much better appreciated in order.
Donât miss he latest Ryker whirlwind
Another page turning adventure with the Rykers. Corruption, kidnapping, Russian thugs masterfully woven to keep us on the edge of the page. The Ryker duo continues to deliver kickass adventures - and Todd Moss breathtaking plots.

    The Scarlet Pimpernel!
Love, love, LOVE! this series. 6 books surrounding one dashing hero. I've long enjoyed the 2nd book--this one, the one upon which the movie classic (The Scarlet Pimpernel) was made. Then after I first bought my kindle, I discovered there were 5 more books. Enchanting! I read them all in a matter of weeks, when I first downloaded them a few years ago.
The Elusive Pimpernel has it all, as they say: secret identities, romance, misunderstandings, daring rescues, narrow escapes, clever wit...
If you are looking for a new classic literature read, you really should give this a try. If you enjoy Jane Austen, and similar novels, this will likely climb high on your list of favorite stories.
    Good except for Marguerite
The level of adventure in this one is great! I read it the other night and couldn't put it down. In fact, I stayed up ridiculously late reading it until I finished.
Readers are treated to a deeper look into Chauvelin's character. I, for one, even found myself liking him a little... at least in comparison to his comarades in the Revolution... even though he was the most vicious in his attempts to harm our hero and his wife.
Percy was also interesting is this - as usual. Of course his actions as the Scarlet Pimpernel were entertaining as always. But also his relationships with both Chauvelin and Marguerite were allowed to develop a little more. As was stated in another review here, he does get in a few really good jabs at Chauvelin and there is also a long conversation between the two in which their reactions to each other can be further enjoyed. I was also interested in the discovery of just where his relationship with Marguerite sits in his priorities (one of the biggest points of the book I think). Previous books had alluded to the answer... but in this one the answer was made clear again.
As for Marguerite, I can't give her much in the way of points at all. She was both very whiny and yes, stupid. Not at all one of the cleverest women in Europe (even Chauvelin was in agreement on this within the book). Still, I found myself sort of understanding some of her concerns... and a few of her thoughts. And certainly I was still hoping for the best for her by the end. Again, I did like seeing some of interactions between her in Percy... especially at public gatherings.
    The Scarlet Pimpernel is back
The Pimpernel is one of my favorite characters. I was happy to read more adventures. This is truly a classic series.
    Fun read
Another fun adventure novel, and the sequel to The Scarlet Pimpernel. It continues telling the story of the League of the Scarlet Pimpernel as they attemp to save more aristocrats from the Reign of Terror. It's not terribly interested in historical accuracy, but that's probably what makes it fun. The main characters are endearing, but you find yourself saying, 'Don't do it.
