Perplexed over other reviews about the narrator

I was surprised at the negative reviews of the narration of this book. I've listened to a number books narrated by Barbara Rosenblat and have always been impressed by her interpretations. Normally, I listen to books in the car, so possibly have not heard some of the "offending sounds" others have pointed out because of background road noise. But I think her performances are terrific. She has a way of creating a mood, a personality for the characters she reads. Subtleties in voice, in accent, denote and differentiate the characters beautifully. I have bought books she's narrated simply because she was the reader.

Now, the book. I have enjoyed most of the Temperance Brennen stories. A forensic anthropologist, Brennen is called in on cases where the mostly unidentifiable remains require extensive analysis and investigation to solve murder cases. There is thoughtful description of how these analyses are done, which I find fascinating. How anthropomorphic details like size,age, sex, etc. can be deciphered from clues in often very deteriorated human remains. The detailed police tactics involved in the case are also intriguing and interesting, because she describes enough detail to reveal the logic and rationale for how cases are handled. The story is convoluted, and engaging.

Where does Trophy Hunt rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

Top five, easily.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Trophy Hunt?

When it gets 'western.' Anything with Joe and Nate Romanowski with his cal. .454 Casullthe final showdown at the trailer.

Which character as performed by David Chandler was your favorite?

Joe Pickett, I've gotten used to listening to Chandler as Joe and he does a very good job. Kudos to the characterizations of Mary Beth, Nate and Sheriff Bynum His characterization of Bynum makes your skin crawl. You either hate him or are beyond extremely annoyed with him. There's no way you can like Bynum.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

There were a couple of 'gotcha' moments with the cattle/moose mutilations. When I first encountered this book, I thought, "CJ Box is Wyoming's answer to S. Florida's Carl Hiassen." (He isn't.) This one is a little more 'woo woo' than most of his books. Still, a good solid mystery.

Twistingly Complex

This is my 4th or 5th Joe Picket novel by C.J. Box. And this may be the most complex plot of them all, growing deeper and deeper. Box knows how to build tension, picking up the pace as the climax nears until I find myself grasping for excuses to drive somewhere, run an errand, anything to have time to listen to more of the story.

Besides the main characters, Box creates amazingly memorable secondary characters, such as Not Ike, one of two black men in the town who people constantly mix up. One is Ike, and his cousin becomes known as Not Ike. Where does he come up with this stuff? It all adds to the deep realism that makes me feel like I've been to Saddlestring, Wyoming and met these people.

Great story. Highly recommended.

Stay sharp or you'll miss a major clue

Lots of bad boys and girls in this story but Joe and his wife still believe in truth and honor,

He sheriff continues to be less than honorable. Joes friend Nick continues to walk on the edge but continues to put his life on the line for Joe.

Just as good the second time around

This is the second time I've listened to and reviewed Mind Prey. I'll let my first one (created in December 2006) pretty much stand. Audible removed and then added the title back which is why I mistakenly downloaded it a second time. But it was worth another listen. The only difference I noted was the addition of silent pauses in places that didn't make much sense. Probably added a few minutes to the listen. Here's what I had to say five years ago: This is the fifth "Prey" book I've listened to and, so far, I think it's Sandford's best. The author has the talent for creating some pretty evil characters and John Mail is no exception. If profanity and sexual references bother you, then don't listen to this book. But if you can tolerate them as part of the story-telling process, then you must listen to this book. The narration is superb, the story is gripping and you will not want to turn off your iPod. This is one of two "Prey" suspense thrillers recently added to Audible's inventory. My next download will be the other one. Fans of Lucas Davenport will not want to miss "Mind Prey."

Some of this is hard to listen to

As much as I love the Prey series, this is not one of my favorites. If I could give it 3 & 1/2 stars I would.

The graphic sexual brutality inflicted on Andy Minette, the adult victim, was very hard for me to listen to. I ended up fast-forwarding through much of it. This is not so much a criticism as a heads-up.

I have read and listened to all the books in the series and am now working my way from beginning to end; so you can see I am a fan.

Either bad editing or bad performance

How did the narrator detract from the book?

This was either an unusual bad performance, or truly bad editing. There were MANY pauses that totally detracted from a good book.

A Gentler Davenport

Davenport and Sloan are on a mission. A young mother and her two daughters are being held by a madman who enjoys playing games with Davenport. The family is wealthy and thus the politics are challenging for the gang at HQ.

This story was well paced and kept my interest throughout.

Personally I did not find the violent acts bothersome, because although the rapes were mentioned, the author avoided description. In fact, it seemed to me that this author was extremely conservative in this regard. He avoided going into any detail with the rapes; so for me, I found that acceptable. Understandably others feel differently.

Overall, I liked this mystery, I would have given it a 3.5 if I could.

One of my favorites

This is one of my favorite Prey books. Lucas Davenport is in fine style in this novel, frequently touching the ring he has purchased for Weather and has yet to give her. The villian in this novel, John, is quite believable, as are his fantasies about a former psychiatrist.

C. J. Box's newest best seller, Cold Wind, marks his 11th visit to the popular Joe Pickett series. When we are first introduced to the world of Cold Wind it seems to be this wide expanse of big Wyoming emptiness. The events and characters look to be products of small town thinking and petty local politics. Yet you quickly learn that there's much more going on here. Wind turbines are coming to dominate the landscape and the economy. Unlikely new players are amassing huge fortunes and influence. Where you have money and power in play, you've got just the elements you need for conflict, mystery, and murder. It's against this backdrop that Joe Pickett works as a ranger. Ostensibly his job involves counting wildlife and keeping an eye on the local hunters, yet his role also allows him unique leeway to act both as the law as well as outside the law.

David Chandler has now narrated 10 of the Joe Pickett books, so he's very familiar with the New West tone and feel for the series. He has a bit of challenge with the number of characters here, but Joes friend Nate stands out. Nate plays counterpoint to Joe they're two sides of the same coin. Where Joe is the thoughtful family man, Nate is the badass wild card unfettered by society and living by his own moral code. You see this particularly in Chandler's voicing of the characters. Where Joe is the everyman voice of reason, Nate is the low menacing whisper of raw emotion and animal drives.

In many ways Cold Wind is reminiscent of an old established genre of storytelling that's populated Western literature for generations. It used to be the promise of the gold rush, then conflicts over cattle, then it was the oil boom; now the next big thing shaping the Western provinces is wind power. With Cold Wind, C. J. Excellent, edge of my seat the whole time

The action starts right from the beginning and the suspense is tight and keeps you glued to the audio long after you should be doing something else. Literally listened to this book every chance I got until it was finished and right to the end was captured by it. C.J. Box is a very talented writer and this latest installment in the Joe Pickett saga may be the best in the series, which says a lot since the series is so good. The narration is great, the story spellbinding I would recommend this book without a single reservation. Already looking forward to the next in the series.

New West

We could always count on C.J. Box for great plots and his characters are unforgettable. Now, in COLD WIND, he also nails the nuanced ambiance of the real Wyoming, geographically and politically.

Good early one...

It's good to remember how good these early Scarpetta books are, before the dreadful Lucy co-opted the series with her myriad of woes. "All That Remains" has Scarpetta at her best -- dedicated to her job, interesting with her cooking skills, open and friendly -- and most of all, being nice to Marino -- as compared to latter books, where she openly makes fun of him. I suppose Patricia Cornwell took a lot of heat from her feminist friends, for her early books like this that had Marino as a "good' character, in spite of his rough exterior. Too bad Cornwell caved in. I like Marino, always have. And in this book, you can see why.

Interesting, too, to hear this book read -- first time for me, although I've probably read it twice, maybe more. For Scarpetta fans, we know that Benton Wesley continues to play a major role throughout this series. In print, he seems like an okay-enough guy, maybe as good a counterpart for Kay as any man could be. But hearing how narrator C. J. Critt renders him, the voice she gives him, he comes across as a total loser as a human, friend or certainly love interest -- he sounds cold, nasty and self-absorbed. No criticism of Miz Critt intended -- her interpretation is just as valid as mine. It was just interesting to see this character in a very different way.

Good listen. I enjoyed it.

I'm so glad I didn't let other reviews sway me from purchasing this book. I'm going through the Scarpetta series for the first time and other readers had me worried. I have no idea what they were talking about! This story is smart, twisty, and dark like the pervious Kay novels.

Abby Turnbull returns. Additionally, we learn a lot more about Moreno and Wesley in this installment.I enjoyed the whole story and it definitely kept me listening, waiting to see whodunit.

For anyone reading the whole series, I can't imagine not including this book in the lineup! Worth the listen.

I think C.J. Critt is an excellent performer and draws me into the book more than if I were reading it from the written book.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Yes, the evidence that was presented kept me guessing about the motive and who was the culprit. Scarpetta is caught "off guard" and finds herself in a dangerous situation.

What about C. J. Critts performance did you like?

She does other character voices in such a way that the listener always knows which character is speaking.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, but it wasn't possible. I like listening to books so I can perform tasks at the same time. It makes whatever task I am doing go much faster.

If the narrator was better!

Narrator kept breathing like she was gasping for air and she sounded like she had a stuffy nose!!!

I love Patricia Cornwell. I have read many of her books and have enjoyed them a lot. I would never buy another audio book narrated by CJ Critt.

I do truly enjoy the Kay Scarpetta books

How did the narrator detract from the book?

She read so slowly and with an awkward cadence. She took loud breaths every few words. It was so distracting and awful that I can't really even like the book as much as I could have if I had read it.

Good story. Good story line.

The performance/reading of the story takes away from the story line - it is slow and you can hear the intake of breath when the narrator is reading the story.

I haven't had the experience with another book where the narration is so slow.

What didnt you like about C. J. Critts performance?

Too long of pauses, sometimes I think my Kindle shut off, intake of breath very apparent when reading. And the overall reading is way too slow. As a result, the story line gets a bit boring.

Could you see Body of Evidence being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

Not really.

The performance of the book makes the story, even when it is a good story line, if the performance isn't great, it takes away from the book.

By now, Adrian McKintys reputation for solidly crafted Irish crime novels is well-established. Equally familiar is the context into which this latest narrative is dropped. McKinty spent his childhood in Belfast at the height of paramilitary conflict there, and Falling Glass centers around a minor character from his Michael Forsythe trilogy that is steeped in precisely those historical influences. Killian, a legendary IRA heavy, emerges from retirement for what appears to be an easy money job of rescuing some rich businessmans kids from their drug-addled mother. Naturally, complications abound and Killian soon finds himself in fierce competition with an apparently invincible Russian hit man on a case that evolves into something much uglier than a straightforward kidnapping scheme.

Throughout this debacle, Killians Pavee senses of humor and realism never abandon him. He has the dry wit and keen improvisational reflexes of a man raised among the Irish gypsies, which gets him into and out of trouble in equal measure. McKinty has a discerning ear for Killians banter, colorfully supported by Gerard Doyles authentic brogue. Doyle has won numerous audio awards, but perhaps more importantly, has also been with McKinty every step of the way. As narrator for the entire Michael Forsythe trilogy, Doyle is not only aware of this new novels background, but has also already established a clear sense of voice for many of this novels chief characters.

Although Forsythe takes a back seat in this story, fans of the previous trilogy will be gratified by the return of Doyles vision for the voice work, and find a credible set of new developments among beloved characters. But this novel is also quite capable of standing alone, and listeners who are coming fresh to Adrian McKintys work will not have any trouble picking up the storys thread, thanks in part to Gerard Doyles confident hold on the reins of the narration. Adrian McKinty is a darn good storyteller. Hes the real thing and keeps getting better and better.

Dont let this book fool you. Yes, its an action-packed thriller, but its much more than that. The story is brutal but beautifully, hauntingly, and lyrically written. Imagine a cross pollination of F. Scott Fitzgerald and Chuck Palahniuk. Or James Joyce and Quentin Tarantino.

Loved It!

Always enjoy James Patterson's Alex Cross books. Enjoyed hearing the voice of Andre Braugher as Alex. Can't wait for the next book!!

I can't get past the bad reading.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I just stopped listening to this one - it is the worst reading job I have ever heard. Not sure which narrator it is that is bad, Andre or Jay, but whoever is doing Alex is TERRIBLE. This is so monotone, emotionless, and even poor reading! Pauses at the wrong time, pauses when there shouldn't be any. This is terrible terrible work for a patterson book. AVOID this - seriously - avoid.

I wish I could get a refund as I had to stop this audio. I wish I could rate 0 stars for performance which is too bad because the other narrator is okay --- just can't get past who is doing Alex. Seriously folks? How many millions are you making on the audio alone? Don't you listen to this?!?!?!

I like Andre Braugher but NOT in this venue. He reads too fast and it distracts from the content. I am not sure I will make it through the entire book and that is sad. I love the Alex Cross series but feel I wasted a credit on this book. Changing the reader so drastically is disconcerting at best. Sorry Mr. Braugher, keep doing what you are great at - acting and leave the narration to those who do a much better job.

Don't Listen to Buyer Beware

I'm not sure what the problem was with the reviewer that said Buyer Beware. I listened to this book and loved the narrations. I've listened (verses read) the whole Alex Cross series and although the narrator changed, I thought the team was good and had a nice flow. Yes it was someone new to the part, but it didn't take long for the new voice to blend with the part of Alex. This was a really good book and brought some of the characters from previous books back to keep the reader actively involved in the story. I'm sure if you are a fan of the Alex Cross series you will be pleasantly entertained by this book regardless of the change in narration.

Great character, even better dialogue!

It's not hard to hard to be swept away by any of Elmore Leonard's characters in his books, and Raylan is one of his best. Rayland exemplifies the very best of an old west sheriff in a modern day world serving in the U.S. Marshall's service. Loaded with characters and dialogue that you will not soon forget. It is not hard to understand why so many of Elmore's books and characters make it to the big screen and television; they are just plain and simple entertainment. Enjoy this listen!

Fun Listen

This book is a fun listen. Not quite the Raylan Givens that you know from Justified, but close. Snappy dialogue and great characters.

JUSTIFIED's Raylan Givens comes to life!!

Pronto is the book that introduces Raylan Givens from the TV series, Justified. It's a great mob versus the 'good guy' story. Raylan tends to do everything 'his way' and on his own moral judgments. When a bookie, Harry, is set -up by the Feds to draw in more bad guys, Raylan decides that 'fair is not fair' here. Raylan goes off to Italy to 'bring back' the bookie, and to save him from a mob hit.

The character descriptions are marvelous, and Raylan's 'biography' is apply drawn throughout the story as he gets to know Harry's girlfriend---soon to be Raylan's girlfriend. The bad guys range from those looking for any little excuse to kill people, to the big talkers who wimp out when the action calls for gunfire.

Scenes in Italy are interspersed with stories of the poet, Ezra Pound. Beauty for one person becomes boredom and confusion for others. Like all great 'bad versus good' hero stories, the good guys win in the end!! If you like the TV series, this is a must read for you!!!

Just ok. Nothing special. It kept my interest.

I was hoping for the humor and quick wit I found in Out of Sight which had me smiling a lot. I didnt smile while reading this. It was ok though. Most of the characters are wiseguys with wiseguy talk. Some are not very smart. Raylan has a casual southern sound. He is a US Marshall. He has no problem killing bad guys, but he does it in a way that they draw first so he is shooting in self-defense. What was missing? Probably - the main characters didnt draw me in enough.

There is a TV show Justified based on the character Raylan Givens. This is the first book in the Raylan series.

Genre: crime fiction. Ending: reasonably good feeling.

Live To Tell - 3.5 stars

If I had known how depressing this book would be I would have skipped it. Live To Tell is a story about a children's psychiatric ward, family heartbreak and horror. It was very real, very raw and truly heartbreaking. Usually I like my murder mystery without child, infant and baby murders. With that said ... I had to finish till the end because I just needed to know the outcome. The three narraters were the best I have ever listened to and I look forward to listening to them in the future.

I really enjoyed this book, while the story was sad and heartbreaking I couldnt wait until the outcome. Narration was equally as good, a worthwhile listen.

Live to Tell Doesn't Live Up at the End

There are some things to like in this story, enough to merit a 3-star rating, but rather than gaining momentum to the end, I liked it less. First, the positives. The multiple narrators were good, particularly since various chapters tell the experiences of different primary characters. The narrator for D.D. Warren was good, and the narrator for the Danielle character seemed a great fit. Also, the theme of disturbed children and the various family and institutional caregivers set up an interesting framework, and presented multiple perspectives that seemed genuine.

Now for the reasons my enjoyment and rating sank. I'm not impressed by Detective D.D. Warren. She seems to interject a dislikable, smart-alecky and inappropriate denigration of people she's interviewing. She jumps to scattered presumptions, based on no meaningful evidence.
