Another great Dexter story!

I'm really enjoying going through and listening to all of the books in the Dexter series. Having discovered the TV series first, I was a big fan, and this is like rediscovering it all over again, because these are all different stories than the TV show. Fans of Dexter, I recommend you read (or listen to it) the book series that it was based off of!

Dearly Devoted Dexter

I thought this was a great book! It was not the same as season 2 of Dexter, if you've seen it on TV. I got wrapped up in it quickly and found it hard to stop listening. I'm undecided on Jeff Lindsay's performance, though. I found his need to have a different voice for each character somewhat distracting. I also think that part of my indecision stems from the fact that I was a fan of the show first, and so it's hard to not want to hear Michael C Hall voicing Dexter (but I realize this is a personal hangup).

Anyway- I am really enjoying the Dexter book series as much as the show, and from here I couldn't wait to get book 3!

Lots of Lizard Brain Fun

Jeff Lindsay does a great job of narrating his own book. I will continue to read this series.

Outstanding Thriller

This was a great psychological thriller. Michael Robotham has the touch on this one. I recommend it highly.

Brilliant, but very melancholy

Suspenseful, brilliantly written, wonderful characterizations of truly tortured souls including the protagonist. I loved the previous books in this series - as a neurologist, the psychologist with Parkinson's disease fascinates me, particularly since the depiction is excellent and very accurate. However, this book was really depressing. Everything just keeps going downhill for our hero, no matter how hard he tries to do the right thing. I almost stopped listening during the scene with the animal torture - I really couldn't stomach that at all. I don't think I'll be listening to any more books in this series, not without a hefty dose of Prozac in any case. Narration was outstanding.

Good, not great.

This is my first book of this series, and I know I'm at a bit of a disadvantage. The main character is enormously likeable ... but I really thought I might be able to understand more if I'd listened to the first books in the series. That said, it is a good listen for the most part. The plot moves along but some of the details are depressing.

One of the best mystery writers I've read!

I've listened to the first four books in the series in quick succession - I just can't get enough! As an avid print reader and now voracious Audible listener (I haven't counted, but I'm sure I've listened to more than 100 books), this series is one of my favorites.

Catch this great thriller

This is another excellent thriller by Lisa Gardner. It's the latest in the DD Warren series, and there are references and links to other characters in other books.

The premise is interesting: a woman goes to the police for help, believing that she will be murdered in four days' time. That's based on the fact that her two best childhood friends were murdered a year apart on the same day.

The story alternates between the first-person perspective of Charlie, the woman who thinks she'll be murdered, and the third-person narration concerning Detective DD Warren. The flip back and forth between first and third person works quite well.

I thought I had figured out the plot twist fairly early on, but was completely surprised. This is not one which is easy to figure out. The prologue is, as always, the key to the entire book.

Detective DD Warren struggles with her new-found status as the mother of a 10-week old baby, and there is a very realistic and sympathetic portrayal of the challenge of walking the line between family and career. It was a little surprising that she would be back at work only 10 weeks after having given birth, but maybe that's the world of policing in Boston.

Charlene ("Charlie") grant is a sympathetic but seriously emotionally damaged character, and the clever use of the first-person narration leaves the listener wondering how much is real and how much is mis-perception or mis-remembrance. It's a very effective use of an interesting narrative tool.

There's lots of fascinating information about internet predators and the tricks and skills used by pedophiles and other undesirables.

The narration is very well done. Kirsten Potter does a marvellous job with the various voices, and her narration is steady. She's not overly breathy or nasal, and she doesn't mispronounce words or pause in all the wrong places. She contributes to the success of the book.

The book is a complete page-turner (well, metaphorically anyway). The whodunnit is a complete surprise,but works very well.

Equal to Bosch and Davenport

It surprises me that Crais' name does not get linked with Connolly and Sandford more often. He certainly belongs in that company and, in fact, one of my fantasies is to find out what would happen if Elvis and Harry Bosch got together on a case.

This is definitely one of the very best of the Cole/Pike books and is eminently worth your time and credit. Characters and plot are beautifully balanced, and the LA setting is vivid and evocative. if you have not read any Crais, this would not be a bad place to start even though it is well along in the sequence. It does not substantially spoil any previous cases and actually sheds some very interesting light on the underpinnings of the whole series. I thoroughly enjoyed it far beyond the satisfaction of the well designed plot which moved the book along at a satisfying pace. I tried to find a reason to mark it down to four stars but could not. Do yourself a favor and give it a listen.

Better than I anticipated

I listened to this book with no expectations. It was a random buy where I wanted to try something new from an author I haven't listened to before.

Wow, did I luck out! This was one of the best audiobooks I have ever listened too! I was unaware until mid through the book that this is the 8th book in a series. Most of the time you cannot start a book series part way through without it being confusing. However, the author does a great job of including all needed details and not leaving you confused.

The story itself is a PI murder mystery and felt very much like watching a Noir style PI film. The pace of the story isn't fast, but like a Noir film feels interesting and almost artistic in the way it bends.

The characters were intriguing and left me wanting more (in a good way). The way you feel a sentimental attachment to good characters.

The narrator does a great job I have no complaints, he was the perfect narrator for this book and all its characters.

Overall, if you aren't familiar with this book series or author and want to try this book. Go for it, the story was great, the narrator fabulous, and even though the storyline didnt feel fast paced the book as a whole felt like a fast read.

This book can be read as a stand-alone novel as well.

One of my all time Favorites!

Last week I finished my first Robert Crais' novel, his newest book "Suspect", which if you are a dog lover is a must read! I was so pleasantly surprised that I chose L.A. Requiem for my next "listen". I rarely rate a book 5 stars, but I had to with this one because I was so completely blown away.

Train wreck

This book is just plain horrible. The characters are unbelievable and boring going on long tirades about nature. The sci-fi technology aspects of the book are quickly glossed over almost like they were just getting in the way of the nature tirades.

It was so bad I gave up. I listened for 6 annoying hours and had to stop. I don't know how much Crichton had to do with this book but it is by far the worst thing with his name on it.

Save your money, save your credit, pass on this book.

Honey, I Shrunk Your I.Q.

I'm a huge fan of previous Crichton books. Of course I was a little nervous if this one would work out, since it was only a partial manuscript found after his death, and the majority of the book was written by someone else (Richard Preston). Since Mr. Preston wrote far more of the book than Crichton did, it seems disingenuous for Crichton to be "Headlining" the cover.

While I know this is a cliche to say... I really wanted to like this book. The first scene was appropriately creepy, and I got excited for what was to come. Then it devolved into what was (for me) the audiobook equivalent of nails on a chalkboard.

There is a way for a good author to get his readers to a place where they are willing to accept the fantastical, and are able to go along on what would otherwise be an unbelievable adventure - it's done all the time.

This book may just kill Alex Cross

I kept wondering if I was listening to an abridged version because the story was incredibly choppy. No story line (and there are several) was fully developed. I love the Alex Cross series, but this one reads like a first draft. Skip Kill Alex Cross; it doesn't advance the character at all.

Loved all books in this Series, Until Now !

I have loved every book in the James Patterson (Alex Cross) Series. I was very excited when this new book finally came out. To my disappointment it was not what I had expected. The excitment and mystery were left out of this book. I did listen to the whole book in the hopes it would get better but it just did not have the usual cant put down effect that all the other books have. Dont get me wrong, I love James Patterson and he is an amazing Author, it is just my opinion this book was the worst in the series. I also know how hard it must be to continue on with a series for so long. I am sure there is only so much you can write about. I feel this book could have been better.

Wait for "almost free" before buying

Definitely not one of his best ones...mediocre at best. Predictable, bad plot and 2 stories going on with 1 not coming to a conclusion. It tries to be fast paced and have action, but it falls terribly flat. I can honestly say this is probably one of the worst ones I have read by Patterson. And "Kill Alex Cross" really has nothing to do with the story. It's like slap a shabby title on an even shabbier manuscript and call it a day. I can withstand the mundane, but this was just way below what I expected from Patterson...and Alex Cross!

Just ok. To me the story was lacking. I also didn't care for the performance aspects and sound effects either. Good narration would have been just fine.

Oh Mr Patterson - Get Back to your Best Stuff

Mr Patterson - too many helpers, co authors, too many cooks in the kitchen. You are losing your ... yes your (Mr Patterson) key ingredients and style. Alex Cross is so powerful and he too is being diluted too much.

Bad bad narrator.

The narrator greatly detracts from the book. His cadence and rhythm never changes and it is maddening.

Disappoint? Balcacci? Not Likely!

As a plotter, Baldacci seems to be among the most playful thriller writers. And in the Simple Truth we all get to play his game. The point is that the book goes from point A to point END as if it's supposed to go that way. Too many authors in this genre seem to turn their endings into the last two minutes of an NBA game. You know, where all heel explodes and the preceding stuff was just there to get the fans through their beers and back-slapping. In the Simple Truth the entire story arc's got game. And you aren't left wanting another stopping place or wondering why there were so many parts left over as you pull the plot apart in backward glances. The simple truth is that the characters, feelings, and plot all work. Cool!

Good read. It will capture your attention & time

It takes time for the story to develop. Once the story develops it's a riveting story with twists and turns. I hated to see it end

Powerful Buildup -- Best Pendergast Series Yet!

The second of the three Prendergast books, Cold Vengeance is a powerfully written thriller. It does not rely on technology or gimmicks but on good old fashion thrill, suspense and plot twists. In continuation from the first, Pendergast is still trying to find out who killed his wife, or was she killed. In this installment youll find out Im not telling. All of the twists and turns are very much worth it. The authors leave enough major issues open that you cant wait to read the final installment. Yet, Preston and Child still provide enough closure to satisfy. The work has plot, depth, villainy, conflict and it is hard to put down.

This book reintroduces an old friend, Corrie Swanson, from a previous thriller -- Still Life with Crows. That novel was weak, Corrie being the only bright spot. It was good to see her back in this novel. This is the second trilogy of the Pendergast series. The first was excellent and the second trilogy is better than the first. I suggest you read the series. Dont read this without first reading Fever Dream or it will not make sense as this novel does not stand on its own.

Pendergast - The Romantic?

This is the second installment of the Helen Pendergast saga. It is a good story but I hope this series ends with "Two Graves" ? This is particularly so, as the series seems to require reading all 3 books (so far) to get the gist of what's going on. Other references to earlier novels are also included but not required reading. What began as an enjoyable multi--book story is now evolving into an undergraduate course on Pendergast, that requires juggling much information, and with no end in sight.

On the upside, Rene Auberjonois does a terrific job with portraying Pendergast, a complicated hero with a multitude of skills, as well as the other myriad characters who come and go in this novel and series.

On the downside, the authors' effort to portray Pendergast's love for his elusive wife Helen was clumsy and amateurish. Gazing together upon a "buttery moon" was one of many cringe-inducing scenes that showed the authors are far better at writing fast-paced thrillers with subtle twists than syrupy teenage romances.

Bottom line: Still a good read, but let's hope a satisfying conclusion is not too far over the horizon.

Waiting for the Next One

I love the Pendergast series. Do not read this as your first book. It would be more confusing without the background from some previous books in the series.

Wonderful story, perfect narration!

I have read and reread all of the Mrs. Pollifax books in hard copy and was thrilled to discover that not only had they come to Audible but that my favorite narrator of all time, Barbara Rosenblat, is reading them. As a senior myself, I can promise that my voice is not as young and resonant as it once was and I have no problem with Ms. Rosenblat's portrayal of the character. The listener needs to keep in mind that Mrs. Pollifax IS a senior and that is what makes her so "amazing". After all, the reason the CIA wanted her was because she is the perfect grandmotherly type. constantly caught up in everyone's troubles and heartaches and thus the most unlikely "spy" ever. This series is fun, exciting and well worth a listen. Try it - you'll like it!

A Delightful Series!!

I was really unsure about selecting the 1st book in this series - The Unexpected Mrs. Pollifax! But, I was truly impressed with the story line and the narration. I just love Barbara Rosenblat! She is amazing to listen too, she takes you into the story with her! I have just finished listening to the Amazing Mrs. Pollifax and it was wonderful. I really cannot say enough about it. I was laughing, smiling and even a small tear. Each book is a seperate story, with only the main charaters reappearing and new ones introduced. Thank you Dorothy Gilman and Barbara Rosenblat. I have downloaded all the books except 2 as they are not offered on Audible. And Thank you Audible for sharing these great stories with me!

Where does The Amazing Mrs. Pollifax rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

It was as good as the other Mrs Pollifax stories I've listened to, which means it was fabulous.

What did you like best about this story?

This series is like comfort food - you go back to them because you know you're going to enjoy them and although there is a familiarity to them, they are never boring. I also love the exotic and unusual places Mrs Pollifax travels to, and the way those cities and countries are described.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Dynamite outing by Nesbo. I would call it a page-turner if there were pages. Captivating, fun and with the usual Nesbo twists and turns. It will speed your commute, ease the pain of your workout, or provide a not-so-soothing time alone with a peculiar evil.

What did you like best about this story?

The characters, of course.

Have you listened to any of Robin Sachss other performances before? How does this one compare?

Robin is one of my favorites. Now, the fact that the Norwegian characters lurch into Liverpudlian dialects could be distracting if you pay attention, but it gets the point across and his Norwegian place-names and pacing are crackerjack. Four thumbs up!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes- but too long to acccommodate. Also quite good in bite-sized ear bits.

Any additional comments?

How a uniquely American art form- the noire tale- became bread-and-butter for our Scandanavian cousins is quite remarkable. Still, I suppose if the dry Soccoro winds in LA that made the meek housewife with her carving knife eye her irritating husband's neck, it may be that the endless night of winter brings on a similar taste of Seasonal

Jo Nesbo is unreal

For years Michael Connelly's Harry Bosch series has been my very favorite. After listening to my first Jo Nesbo book "The Snowman" I was hooked and downloaded everyone of his books the main character Harry Hole is now my second favorite series.

I have to commit on the narrator Robin Sachs as the narrator can make or brake a great book he is one of the best you can always tell what character is talking with out doubt his narrating will keep you on the edge of you seat.

If your looking for a new series then look no further.

Gripping, especially if you have read Red Breast

I could not put the story down at the end because of the way it wrapped up the Red Breast story. If you are looking for the right book to pick up after Red Breast, this is it.

Nesbo's stories are complex enough that it is a good idea to have both the written and audible portion. Note to Amazon: Whispersync was not working even though my accounts said it would.

Great detective work, clever lines.

A Really Great Mystery, Well read!

Absolutely my favorite new writer, Nesbo's character development, plot, the twists and suspense rival Thomas Harris and Larsson. I loved every second of this and The Snowman.

This is a great book, intense, a page turner. Nesbo is a very imaginative author, he tells a good, tight story with good human insight. I can't wait for my next one.
