Another excellent reading by Dina Pearlman

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would be comfortable recommending this to any fan of cozy mysteries. While there is some romantic tension and violence, it does not proceed beyond a level acceptible for most cozy mystery lovers. I also continue to enjoy the reading/performance of Dina Pearlman. I have listened to many of her other audiobooks and find that she is consistently excellent.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Double Whammy?

Davis's encounters with Maxine and Mary at the Double Whammy machines. i also enjoyed Teeth and No Hair in all their intimidating glory.

Which character as performed by Dina Pearlman was your favorite?

Morgan George Sr.was my favorite character beyond Davis.

Hoping that Double Dip will also make its way to audio.

Hilarious fun! Can't wait for more

I totally enjoyed this book! It was so funny. Davis Way is a little bit pathetic (but in a funny way), quite ingenious and completely hilarious. I am so glad that I stumbled upon this book here on audible and decided to give it a try. I bought the kindle book (well worth the $2.99) and the discounted audible book (also well worth the money or the credit). Dina Perlman does a great job narrating but the book reads well in print, too (I mostly listened to it but did read some of it). I will definitely be watching out for the next book in this series.

Wow - this is bad! Even for the WMC Series!!!

What could James Patterson and Maxine Paetro have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

The story could have been tightened up. There were too may different stories - the missing body, the sick baby (that wasn't really sick), the serial killer, AND a trial of another killer. Dear Lord! With that many story lines, the novel should have been 10 times longer than it was.

Would you be willing to try another one of January LaVoys performances?

No - she was way too dramatic. Though the storyline didn't help her any, the voices she used were often distracting and comical.

Not a character, but a storyline. The "missing body" storyline was completely pointless.

Just stay away, even if you are a Women's Murder Club fan. This book was terrible!!!

Too many unrelated storylines and too much personal drama that had no bearing on the story at all. I waited for this book and I should have waited and read the other comments. Did Patterson take a number of storylines he had sitting on the shelf and throw them into one last novel?

Waste of Time

I have followed this series from the beginning; this one gives me permission to let it go. The Women's Murder Club used to consist of one or two cases that Lindsey Boxer and her unofficial team would solve. The books have been going downhill for a while, however, I stuck with it out of some sense of misguided loyalty; I'm sure many readers have as well -- hopeful that the creativity that captured us in the beginning might return. It isn't and this will be the last James Patterson purchase I make. The cases are unrelated and there is absolutely nothing engaging about them or the characters involved in solving them.

A Little Mystery with your Magic

Johanna Parker is an excellent narrator as always, and Bailey Cates has created a quirky coven of colorful characters that are worth spending some relaxing hours with. As a cozy mystery, this story doesn't require deep thinking or puzzling. Actually, I think the fun might crumble in the face of too much over-thinking.

If you enjoy baking, the recipes included in the book are available on a pdf at the publisher's website with a code given at the beginning of the recording. I haven't downloaded them yet, but there are a lot of yummy-sounding items at the bakery.

If you enjoy things magical, the basic practices, symbols and herbs discussed are true to tradition as far as my experience. I always wonder about that in a fiction book, so that was a nice discovery.

As far as negatives go, while the female characters are alive and textured, the male characters are flat and fall into stereotypes -- good guy fireman, slimy reporter, cranky detective, thug, nearly invisible husband. Also, since it's the first book in a series, and there are a so many characters, more time is spent introducing people than developing the mystery. I guessed whodunnit within minutes of the murder.

That said, I enjoyed these people enough to listen a second time while I was doing other things around the house, and I will be happy to buy the second book in the series when it comes out in audiobook.

I was wrong!

I was very reluctant to use a credit on this. Oh, just another cute bakery and witches story. I throughly enjoyed the book. It's an easy listen, moves along very well. Do not buy it if you want sex, profanity, blood and gore. IT WAS FUN!

Light and funny

Although the subject of witches may seem silly, the book is light but not silly. Great as a respite between serious books!

Cute

I thought this story was cute, it didn't require you to think to hard about anything. The mystery aspect of the story was nice, and most of the characters were interesting. This book is definitely directed more towards younger girls, I think they would enjoy it the most.

Light Fun Sleuth Novel

Its light. Its fun. It is not thought provoking, or emotionally challenging. It took a minute to get out of the Sookie Stackhouse frame of mind due to the narrator but after I got into it it was ok. It was a nice setup novel, just a hint of romance but the setup for a angsty love triangle is created. The story was amusing but not as funny as a Molly Harper or Janet Evanovich.

Darn near a true story...

Starting back in the mid 1980's, I was one of the few lawyers who was trying to defend rural landowners like the Roberson's, the endangered protagonists of "Breaking Point". When I say "trying", that's what I mean: As author Box suggests, these federal agents operate outside the Congressionally-enacted law, with unpublished rules and regulations, to the point that it's almost impossible to clear your clients in these cases. Besides, if you try to fight back, they just throw in more charges -- again, as Box suggests. The best you can do is to try to work out some plan that will let your client keep some portion of his land -- although by the time they get done defending themselves, most abandon the farm. Everything they valued has been destroyed. It got so bad that by the mid-1990's, I had to quit. I decided that if I had another sobbing farm wife sitting in my office, listening while I had to explain that there really wasn't much that could be done other than to work out a "deal", I'd go crazy myself. Like my clients, I too walked away. It just hurt too much.

A few things in "Breaking Point" are fiction: I never had a client kill, or even try to kill, a federal agent -- but I did have two who killed themselves. The trauma of having your farm -- in your family for over 100 years -- plowed, planted and harvested every year -- suddenly declared a "wetland" and therefore off limits, subject to horrendous penalties if "disturbed", is just too devastating. Can planted acres be a "wetland"? Indeed. Under federal law, a "wetland" is determined by soil type -- it has nothing to do with its being "wet". No self-respecting duck would ever look at this land, let alone land there. All that's required to constitute a "wetland" is a particular soil type -- merely that the land WOULD SUPPORT hydrophytic vegetation IF IT WERE wet, is enough. Kafkaesque, certainly, but entirely true.

There's more in this book than just the trauma faced by the Roberson family -- the range fire at the end, the tense escape, is one of the best white-knuckle scenes in history. Box is so good that you can picture the whole thing, feel the heat.

As far as I know, C. J. Box is only one of two popular authors who dares to make federal agents the 'bad guys' in some of his books -- P. T. Deutermann being the other. And why not? It's not just pharmaceutical company owners, businessmen, religious leaders and Republicans who do bad things, as virtually every other contemporary author would have you believe.

I wanted to love this book but it fell flat

This is my first Thomas Perry novel and I wasn't impressed. I found the Jack Till character to be boring. I kept expecting him to develop more but it just didn't happen. Don't get me started about the end of the story. It was very abrupt. The whole story could have been made better by an epilogue.

Typical Thomas Perry

A typical Thomas Perry novel, similar in plot and form to Pursuit (which is slightly superior) and featuring Jack Till, the detective from Silence. The writing is solid without being showy or demanding, the characters hold one's attention, and the plot is suspenseful but not twisty. This is fine, but I rate it a notch below Perry's best books (such as Strip).

A Good Story That Finishes Flat

Well, the sex was good for me! This book takes us into the ultimate male fantasy. Yes they are escorts, but they are stunningly beautiful, equally intelligent, and only too happy to please.

I loved the father daughter relationship featured in the story. Maybe it's because I've never been around the world of escorts, but I just couldn't believe the rest of the story.

I should have been paid to listen to this book!

I Like Sanford. Easy Prey Works

First off, don't start Lucas Davenport books with Easy Prey... Why? It's filled with spoilers regarding the ten books that came before. Books you'll enjoy reading when you get hooked by Sanford.

Oh, Richard Ferrone IS Lucas Davenport!

Boring and Tiresome.....

The plot is disjointed ... it's all over the place..... unbelievable, unrealistic and unappealing. Too many characters and false leads ... it was hard to follow.

Worst of all is the bad guy was not the first suspect, not even the second... no common sense in this story. The publisher's summary is ok.

Recommend passing this one by .... move on to another... Stolen Prey and Silken Prey are good ones.

Disappointing for Sandford

I love John Sandford's books. I especially like the ones featuring Virgil Flowers but I also enjoy the Lucas Davenport series (especially the ones written in the past 10 - 12 years). The problem with "Easy Prey" is that the plot is all over the place, the murderer isn't really introduced until the last 25 - 50 pages, the motivation is contrived (even for a genre novel) and then there are the WOMEN. One of them is Weather, who, imo, is an attractive character with flaws - in other words, realistic and appealing. Then there is a woman who is intrinsic to the plot and since Weather and Lucas are broken up why shouldn't he have a little fling? But the third woman is just added weight - she's boring and tiresome and I did not for a second buy into the attraction Lucas supposedly has for her. In short, I think there are way better Sandford books available on Audible (I give 5 stars to ALL the Virgil Flowers books) and I recommend choosing one of them and passing on Easy Prey.

Disappointing

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Does not move like other Davenport novels. Somehow disjointed. Had a problem getting to the end.

Different but not bad

I read the poor reviews prior to reading the book and feared the worst, but it honestly wasn't as bad as I feared. I think you see a much different Davenport in this novel, Sandford definitely goes heavy on the womanizer aspect of Davenport's character which makes him seem a little less likable than in other books.

Also, the plot is filled with allot of characters that make it tough to keep track, but again, not as bad as some of the reviews make it sound. I think some readers enjoy "being the detective" and predicting the outcome which is hard in this one, but also pretty realistic. True life crime isn't always a tidy narrative and sometimes the break does come right at the end.

Not his best work, but don't skip if you are a Davenport fan.

Very good Davenport take.

I thoroughly enjoy the "Prey" series by John Sandford, starring Lucas Davenport. I find that I usually read these in clumps. I'll read a number of books that are more literary in nature and then desire something that I can just enjoy and have fun with.

For this purpose, Sandford's novels are perfect. The characters, Davenport in particular, are well developed and have all grown as the series has progressed. The stories are different than most detective fiction, in that we almost always know who the killer is early in the plot's development. It's not a whodunit but rather a how do we catch them.

I wholeheartedly recommend this and all the "Prey" novels as an excellent escape from mundane daily life.

Murder? Who You Gonna Call? Lucas D.... Of Course

Who do you trust? No one, especially while on a hunting trip with a group of "friends". Everybody has guns and everybody has something to gain by the death of the Chairman, somebody pulls the trigger killing the "top man" and nobody is sorry that he's dead.... wow! a murder mystery for Lucas Davenport to solve.

This is where the skills and intuition of Lucas Davenport steps in to solve the case. But it was not going to be easy because the same people who are supposed to be the man's friends contains at least one man or woman who was willing to pull the trigger, and would benefit from the man's death. There are twists and turns in the storyline that keeps the story interesting and the listener guessing whodunit.

Ferrone, the narrator, is the voice of Lucas Davenport.

Meet Letty West!

Loved this book. Letty West is one of the best character additions to this great series. She appears in subsequent novels in the series and she is a fabulous character. And this is the book where she makes her debut.

I have listened to all 24 Davenport books and Virgil Flowers books. This one is hands down the best Stanford book ever.

Another great one

Sandford just gets better. Each one of the Prey series is fantastic to me. I love they way they build on each other. Sandford doesn't leave a cliff hanger like the old serials did in the movies but his books sure lead you to wanting to read the next book in the series. Davenport or Mitch Rapp. Maybe they are equal in my mind. Both are dynamite character's. Enjoy.

Just can't get enough Sandford!

I love Sandford books but recently been hesitant to purchase them thinking that Lucas Davenport is going to get old and boring. Sandford Never Disappoints. this book is excellent even if you read the later books where he already has some characters introduced by the story you'll still love it. I am not going to hesitate in getting a Sanford book in the future and now going through my library to see if there are any I haven't listened to yet.

Im suprised there isn't a whole slew of movies based on Davenport.

What did you love best about NYPD Red?

spellbinding and surprising

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

usually listen while driving and sat in my parking lot for the last 20 minutes because i did not want to wait for tomorrow to find out!

If a friend was looking for a quick, easy read without any plot or character challenge, this would be an option.

Excellent Police Procedural...

I don't know why I never listened to much of James Patterson's books before. This one is written with Marshall Karp who I have never even heard of. Lucky for me Audible is running a sale and I thought for $4.95 how wrong could I go? With this well written police procedural and two great narrators )Eduardo Ballerini and Jay Snyder) makes this is a no brainer!

Whew--To Hell And Back!

My third Robotham novel and not the last! It was a very good story and it kept me in suspense 'til the very end, which is what I usually hope for. I find Robatham and narrator, Sean Barrett, an unbeatable combination, as I have said before. I don't think I would even listen to a book in this series that was not narrated by Barrett. He seeps into the characters and becomes a necessary element.

This story had a certain "uneasiness" quality for me, a sense of dread and worry. My fears were allayed at the end, happily for me. It seems that for me, there is a fine line between enjoyment and discomfort. While this book came close to that line, it didn't jump over the line and cause too much anxiety for me.

What really surprised me is that I shed a few tears at the very end, at an unsuspected moment of kindness. I really like books that evoke strong feelings and this book did not disappoint.

So, while I really liked the book and do recommend it as a great listen, I have a few caveats I need to make. This book is not for the faint of heart, as you can see from the very few less than stellar reviews. Also, I would recommend you not read this book first, as it is 5th in the series. Make it a bunch more enjoyable for yourself and get to know the main characters a bit, those being psychologist Joe O'Loughlin and ex-cop Victor Ruiz. A little knowledge beforehand can make a book much more enjoyable, I have found.

Robotham is the real deal!

He knows how to spin a yarn with great characters, fast pacing and terrific suspense. No I don't like everything about this series, but Robotham consistently delivers a 4 star performance.

You will like this book if you enjoy police procedurals, flawed heroes, a unique mystery and tremendous suspense. Sean Barrett is stellar with the narration.

Story Could Have Been Better

The performance was wonderful, otherwise I would have stopped listening.

What could Michael Robotham have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

The story about a psychologist who is very good a interpreting evidence to solve crimes is intriguing -- but I would have appreciated a plot that was not centered around sexual violence and abuse against adolescents. That was very disturbing and really not necessary. Robotham is a very good writer, but choose a different subject.

What about Sean Barretts performance did you like?

Captivating performance. I will seek out more books narrated by Barrett.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

No, because of the sexual violence against adolescents.
