Amazingly visual experience

What did you like best about this story?

Without saying any thing that might "spoil" the ending, I love the way in the end the loose ends come together/pay off. Every character has a purpose.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes. Very compelling.

I just started watching the TV series having first listened to this. And I keep feeling like I have already SEEN it. The way this is written and narrated I experienced the story completely, including visualizing it.

Engaging as the series.

The novel format of this series is inspired. I loved the internal dialogue and felt every gut punch along with the characters.

Book and TV show in one day

I listened to the book and then watched the TV show bit by bit going back and forth.This was an interesting way to consume the content. I will have to say that near the end it was difficult to listen to some of the descriptions. They were not pornographic but they were vary disturbing.

A "who done it", that is a drag

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

No. It is a little too syrupy with way too possibilities of who "did it". Almost to the point of not having a real plot. I guess I can appreciate the character development and Ms. Pickles performance but the story line was drudgingly hard to get through, for me. More action less soap.

What about Carolyn Pickless performance did you like?

Her voice is nice on the ears.

Disappointed in Down Under

Is there anything you would change about this book?

I have read Private London and Berlin before this. Down Under was more of the same except I found the plot too predictable. The level of violence is unnecessary gore.

I did enjoy the narrator and the Australian accent gave the story authenticity IMO.

was it really written by J. Patterson?

Weak characters. Story consists of 3 plots that are not linked together. I wish the serial killer line has been more developed. The kidnapping angle was pathetic. Strong accent of narrator disturbed me a lot, but at least I improved my English listening skills..

Bad, lame at best, terrible is best discretion

Weak story line, seems the writer lost his integrity. No mystery no thrills and insults the reader with a weak ending.james was good many moons ago but sold out at that time too

This trilogy has promise

My 4 star rating of The One You Love is a bit generous, but the trilogy has promise. It was very late in the novel that I first guessed the identity of the bad guy. This is worthwhile suspense novel.

Very predictable

Not a great story. No suspense. Free on kindle and I know why. Would not recmmend

none if the characters seem invested in their own fates. the cops seem to do all investigation by random guessing. for instance instead of checking a phone log to see if a guy had gotten a threatening phone call, they simply assume it is a bad dream.

This book was really good and would fall in the top half of my books as opposed to the bottom.

Which character as performed by Kate Rudd was your favorite?

I thought Kate Rudd did a fine job narrating. Although sometimes a little whiney, I can picture the character she is performing being the same.

OMG the END! I will not say more.

I think this was the best in the Lizzy Gardner series. Great plot, characters fleshed out, backgrounds filled in and a really twisted seriel killer who is OBSESSED. If you listened to the first 3 in the series and liked them, then there is no reason to even hesitate for a moment. This is certainly worth the $.

Not for me!

Tried to get into this book but no luck. Dragged and was not believable. Too many characters that were BORING.

Great thriller!!

T. R. Ragen's Lizzy Gardner series keeps getting better. It would be difficult to imagine a more evil villain than the one in this book. Abducted, the first of the series, was a mild disappointment, but others are much better. Kate Rudd's narration is stellar.

I'm Obsessed with this series!

Amazing Fast Paced Thriller!!!

If you could sum up Killing Hope in three words, what would they be?

Exhilarating, Relentless, Shocking!

What other book might you compare Killing Hope to and why?

This is a crime thriller which some compare to the likes of James Patterson. And while I think that is a good comparison to explain to you the type of book this is, I personally feel that this book far exceeds Patterson or any other writers I've read in this genre. In fact, it is hands down the best thriller of its kind that I have read. Easily the best! I read the book first on Kindle and was overjoyed to find out it had been made into an audible book. In fact, this book is the very reason that I finally started an audible subscription! Just like the first time I read the book, I was so sad when it was over because I wanted it to never end! The ending is shocking and mind blowing which is not something that can be said of many other books in this category. It is unforgettable and I can't wait until books 2 and 3 of this series also come to audible. I will definitely be buying them the day they come out.

What about David Doerschs performance did you like?

Having read the Kindle book first, it was really fun to hear good ole Gabe Quinn come to life! I enjoyed his gruff, Southern accent and thought David Doersch did a great job with all the characters and he certainly did this book justice with his performance.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

What really stood out to me pretty much immediately when reading/hearing this book is the way Keith Houghton describes the scenes. He does it in a way that really makes you feel like you're right there with Detective Quinn! The weather, the atmosphere, the setting...it's all l laid out in great detail without an over-abundance of words. That is what certainly impressed me right away. He is able to capture a moment and a feeling so descriptively, yet so concisely that it's a very noticeable and striking contrast to most books I've read.

Any additional comments?

The ending of this book literally had my head spinning. I just COULD NOT BELIEVE what I was reading! I had read a long string of crime thrillers prior to picking up Killing Hope and since I almost always guess the end of such books, I was so sure I knew who the killer was in this one too. That is, until the ending actually came and practically hit me over the head like a ton of bricks! It was such a great thrill to be genuinely flabbergasted and gobsmacked!

I cannot recommend this book enough and I highly encourage everyone to pick up this audible book and also the Kindle edition.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

A different narrator. The narrator made this group of professional women sound like giddy teenage girls, excited about everything. Was really hard to listen to.

What could James Patterson and Maxine Paetro have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Better writing. Dialogue was silly at times. Homicide detective at a murder scene comforting the victim's relative and discovers she's late to an event so her hubby drops by with her dress. And OMG he remembered to bring her shoes! Really?!!

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of January LaVoy?

Susan Erickson, who narrates J.D. Robb's In Death series.

What character would you cut from Unlucky 13?

Yuki - her storyline didn't add anything to plot.

This is the first book out of the Murder Club series that I didn't enjoy. The characters seem to have lost their edge.

Pointless Waste Of Time

This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

I... don't think anybody will enjoy it more. Someone reading book #13 in a series will be reading it to continue the story. This book was so boring it invented new ways to be boring I had no idea could even exist. By book 13, either know your characters well enough to write them well, or know your audience well enough to understand how the reader will react to a void in the story we've been reading for 12 enjoyable novels. This contained no character development, no suspense, no surprise, nothing to connect with the listener and no reason to exist at all. Brady is a major player in this book, but we still know nothing more about him than we did before, other than a totally impulsive and out of the blue decision at the beginning of the book. Everybody else remains entirely the same, in the same kind of situation, with the same struggles, the same jobs... nobody even seems to have aged - even baby JULIE. Man. Just... huge waste of time.

The performance was fine; Ms. LaVoy turned in good character representations as per her usual.

Didn't expect to like it as much as I did

STORY (game warden/detective) - This is Book 14 in the Joe Picket series, but it's my first. From reading other reviews, I learned that the series has great characters and that you're missing out if you don't start with Book 1. I agree and disagree. I loved the characters in the book even though I just "met" them, but I can see how the experience would be greatly enriched by starting from Book 1...which I plan to do!

The story is set in rural Wyoming, present day. Joe Picket, the main character, is a game warden but is working for the Governor in this book, trying to spy on someone accused of major crimes. What follows is a nice, easy listen that kept me coming back every second I could. There is mystery, action and suspense, but it's not constant or gut-wrenching. Everything that happens is believable as opposed to "over the top." And in between are wonderful descriptions of the wintery Wyoming countryside.

PERFORMANCE - I love it when narrators are able to give different voices to most of the main characters. And in this case, they're all very realistic. Great job! (And I especially love the husky voice given to the mysterious Nate Romanowski.)

OVERALL - There is no sex, but there is cursing and violence. There are a couple pretty gnarly descriptions of bodies as well. Not recommended for kids except MAYBE older teens. I'm squeamish, but these descriptions were fairly short so I had no problem hearing them. The story stands alone. I think this would be a great book for a husband/wife road trip.

Another great story

Joe Pickett is the man. It's hard not to like a man who works hard, loves his family, & has unquestionable integrity.

I really enjoyed the book as I have all the Joe Pickett stories written by CJ Box. David Chandler does an excellent job narrating.

If I had to suggest an area for Improvment it would be that the author might have included just a little too much anti-federal government rhetoric this time.

Then, of course, there is the obvious complaint that the book is too short ;)

Great series

I love this series, the writing is fantastic and the characters are great.

Game Warden Joe Pickett is asked by the Govenor, (off the record), to go to a small Wyoming town to Investigate the mysterious death of his undercover representative. The representative was originally sent in to find out, just why, a millionaire mogul would build a ranch in the middle of nowhere. Joe uses his status as a neighboring Game Warden as a ruse that he is there to observe and report on their local Game Warden.

I like Scott Brick's narration better than some folks. I think some find him a little too melodramatic. I find if I listen to him at a faster speed it makes it a much more enjoyable listen.

Takes place during Prohibition and examines the complete disregard many had for that particular law, and how *gangsters* got rich because of it.

A typical Cussler yarn, but from me that's a compliment. The historical setting is interesting as well.

Nobody does action, adventure, suspense, and a solid historical background in a novel like Clive Cussler! During the time of the Volstead Act and the rise of communism, Isaac Bell takes on the bootleggers who nearly killed Joe Van Dorn. Gripping tale despite my nerdy tendency to check the historicity of the background as the spirit strikes.

Scott Brick does Cussler proud as usual.

Communist radicals bootlegging liquor!

This book is set in thee early 1920's which is almost a decade later than any other novel in the Isaac Bell series. The book brings together two seemingly unrelated events: the 1919 passage of Amendment 16 in the US Constitution outlawing the sale and consumption of alcohol and the communist revolution in Russia a year earlier. Much of the bootlegging in the US was by Russian and domestic communist radicals to finance the overthrow of the US government.

A reminder that Book 9 in the series, The Gangster, will be released tomorrow.

I highly recommend all of the novels in the wonderful Isaac Bell series. Also, Scott Brick narrates all of them.

Another good Cussler adventure

well worth the time to listen. plausible story line and good action. keeps the Isaaccount Bell story line going.

Cannot rate this highly enough!

It isn't often I do this, but I finished this book in 4 short days. Typically I take weeks to complete an audiobook; this is a rare exception. I have read all of Laura Lippman's previous books and enjoy her characters and stories, so didn't concern myself with reading any listener reviews for this one. While this book is a whodunit, it is more of a study of characters - their lives, relationships, motivations, machinations, etc. I found this to be a stellar story and listen. Often I find I am somewhat neutral where the narrator is concerned but not in this instance. Linda Edmond's reading enhances the book, and her Baltimore accent is spot on. The story jumps back and forth between the present and the previous 50 or so years, but is not confusing in the least. Lippman's characters (to use a cliche', but an apt one) leap off the "page" they are so fully-developed - she astonishes me in her ability to create such real people. There isn't one false note of dialogue, either. The story is engrossing, but easy to follow, and wonderful in portraying loss, betrayal and the effects of both on a variety of vibrant people. As far as the whodunit is concerned, while really secondary to the overall story, it kept me guessing.

Fascinating look at a killer family!

I listened to this just after finishing Broken Harbor by Tana French. In my review of that book I made reference to part of the story being far fetched. Perhaps I should have said inaccurate, because Fear Nothing may be strange subject matter, but it delivers remarkably entertaining suspense.

If you are familiar with the former great Indianapolis Colt coach Tony Dungy you may know his son Jordan has the same genetic disorder as the main character in this book. A while back, Dungy gave a speech entitled The Blessing of Pain, about his youngest son, Jordan, who has a rare condition that doesnt allow him to feel pain. If you haven't read it, it's well worth your time to look it up online. In Fear Nothing, Gardner goes into great detail describing just how dangerous and cumbersome this defect really is.

Our heroine, D.D.Warren suffers a terrible injury that threatens her career. She's forced into months of excruciatingly painful physical therapy, which lands her in the care of Psychiatrist who specializes in pain management. Ironically this doctor has this genetic disorder that prevents her from feeling pain.

But that's not the doctor's only issue. She is the daughter of a notorious serial killer, long dead, and her big sister is in prison for following in their dad's footsteps. Through a series of murderous events, these two professional women are forced to hunt a serial killer bent on their destruction. It's complicated, but it works!

I found this novel fascinating and extremely entertaining. Gardner is not only a great writer, her research is impeccable.
