The book is excellent but there are audio issues

The books is an excellent, well researched, historical cozy mystery but, unfortunately, whomever did the editing had some serious technical issues. There are multiple 2 - 3 second segments of what is obviously another book (narrated by a man) interspersed in this recording as well as the first 3 other books in the series (there may be more but I"m only on book 4 right now). It's extremely jarring even though it doesn't seem that any of the book is missing (i.e. the errant recording is cut in but doesn't seem to replace any content). The other review of the recording notes the same errors so it's not just a problem with the download I got.

I hope Audible (who did the recording) reedits the books and takes these glitches out.

Wonderful Molly Adventure!

If you could sum up In Like Flynn in three words, what would they be?

This book takes you out of New York City and into the upper class lifestyle as Molly goes undercover once again! It is suspenseful and well worth the read. However, the audio does some strange things, at times another story seems to pop into this one you don't seem to miss any important information but it is very surprising. I believe it is just an editing error but it is too bad .I Hope you enjoy this suspenseful and at times chilling story.

all the pondering!! Its a bit much and can become rather tedious at times.

Aside from that one and only complaint, Im having a great time working my way through the series; so glad I came across it! On to Book 5!

I SOOOOO wanted to like this book...

I have tried so hard to get into this series, because I love Rhys Bowen and her Georgie series! But I just can't get behind a love interest who is such a slime-ball! I've been trying and trying, but the conclusion of this book was too much.

Way too much angst

What disappointed you about Dust?

There was so much self talk that the story got lost. I couldn't remember where I was, in the morgue, at the scene, at Scarpetta's home? She would go on about things past or what she was worried about or how someone else might feel ad nauseum. It isn't that I wanted a cold just the facts story but it was so lengthy and the whinneyness of it got overwhelming.Cornwell has been moving in this direction for some time now and this was just too much. I didn't want to listen to it anymore at one point. I stuck it out and it got a little better near the end.

What could Patricia Cornwell have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

This book could have been several hours shorter easily. I would not cut out any of the storyline but an editor should have slashed heavily at all the inner dialogue that went on. Yes Lucy has a big truck, great, I'm got it, I don't need to be told 16 times.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

I have a windows phone and I can't change the speed so that colors it somewhat for me. If I could have sped it up I think I would have had no issues with the narrator. At the speed I have listen it was too slow.

You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

It has the characters that we've come to know so well. But it just didn't hold my interest.

So far my least favorite of the Scarpetta series. If this had been the first book I would not have bought others.

I give up

I keep trying new Scarpetta books, Cornwell is just too full of herself to write an engaging mystery...the series that made her. The story wasn't bad, if it hadn't been for her need to write an epic novel maybe she could get back to basics.

I suspect the over inflated ego and self importance of Kay Scarpetta is a reflection of the writer. To bad, but I won't be wasting anymore time or money on Ms. Cornwell's literary illusions.

What happened to Scarpetta?

I was terribly disappointed in this book. I've read everything by Ms. Cornwell and I love this series.

Yet another great Philadelphia tale with women

If you could sum up Accused in three words, what would they be?

A very fun as well as intriguing mystery with the author's usual sense of place and fine Philly touches. Nice to have a mystery with strong women and not wimpets.

What other book might you compare Accused to and why?

Probably a Deborah Crombie mystery set in London. I don't much care for comparisons.

What about January LaVoys performance did you like?

I liked her okay, but thought the voices of the three Tony's was over acted and the sound volume was annoying. I wish she had read it mostly straight and not as if she was on a Vaudeville stage - especially the south Philly scenes.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When Pigeon Tony unloaded the bees.

Any additional comments?

A splendid read and an unexpected outcome. I would have enjoyed it more if the reader had not annoyed me at times. Still, a solid story and wonderful characterizations. Nice to be back with the lawyer women.

A "chick" legal thriller

Considering the degree to which Accused deals with relationships most people would likely believe women are the audience, a "chick" book. Despite being male, I enjoyed the book. The plot is about a lawyer attempting to free an innocent man convicted of murder. The relationships between the characters are thoroughly explored and are quite interesting. There are two interesting twists near the end that add to the story. RECOMMENDED!

The story is average and simply not that memorable.

I like that the reoccurring characters continue to mature and change.

The performance gets a mixed review. The narrator is good except for when she shouts in an attempt to portray Mary's hard of hearing father. Unless you can do a voice well when reading aloud it is best to read in your normal voice.

Simply the Best Detective Series In any Language

If this isn't your first Harry Hole novel, all you really need to know that Police is every bit as good as Snowman, The Bat and Devil's Star. And it's read by the best British narrator, john Lee.

If you've never listened to a book by Jo Nesbo, now is the time to start. It's the best in its genre including all the great American and British works. The police work is gritty, meticulous, competitive and brilliant. The story is simply magnificent. It's mystery is unique and, well, mysterious.

Sometimes I hate reviewing books because I simply cannot devote the time to do it justice.

Do yourself a favor and listen to Police.

What a wonderful continuation of the saga. I will leave any description of the story to others... Suffice it to say that Mr. Nesb does not disappoint and in fact rewards the reader with hours of enjoyment. However being a fan of audio books to bring additional interest to activities like biking, running, laundry, etc. I found myself incredibly disappointed with the book as performed my John Lee. I felt his interpretation of many of the voices to be offputting, especially the females. He just could not capture the essence of the characters that Jo Nesb has spent 10 books crafting. Using a Welsh brogue for one of the characters was just weird. Sean Barrett also narrates this book. And is far superior and giving you the haunting feel as the plot twists and turns. Please Jo...no more Lee. And I totally understand that the majority of listeners are simply enthralled with Mr. Lee. I am not one of them. If only Robin Sachs were still with us...both he and Sean were far better equipped to handle the special needs required to really bring Jo Nesb books to life. Let Mr. Lee stick with period piece novels like the Century Trilogy at which he is exceedingly good.

Serialized Harry HoleDeadUndeadDeadUndead???

Jo Nesbo can do gritty-city-OMG as well as any of the best contemporary writers publishing today. So, why in this novel do we have to experience the very predictable - "is he deadnot deaddeadnot dead" gimmicks of serialized comic strip writers. Of course he's not dead. If he were dead we would all pack it in and download Arnaldur Indridason instead of Jo Nesbo.

Serial killers are Nesbo's forte, but I am going to have to say (if reluctantly) that this Harry Hole Novel will leave you feeling a victim of serial manipulation. Please note that I own every Nesbo audiobook available and I know I will buy more.

Was she in a hurry?

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would always recommend J.D. Robb, but I would recommend that her books be read in order, since character development is so important. This shorter story leaves out a lot of the usual interactions and behind the scenes development. I felt that it was just a little "off" from her usual stories, as if she didn't have time to expand it fully. It even seemed to be read a bit more slowly than others in the series!

What was one of the most memorable moments of Taken in Death?

I liked the relationship between the twins: the communication that they had together. Would have liked more of it, though.

Which scene was your favorite?

The end: the children showing their gratitude to Eve, who doesn't know how to respond.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I did listen to it in one sitting. Always want to, but usually can't because of their length.

I don't know why this book seemed to be abbreviated, but I hope Robb gets back to her usual detail and length. Nevertheless, she remains my favorite author.

This novella is just as powerful as the regular novels in the series. It's worth the credit.

The story was too short. the story unfolded too quickly I think.

This was not one of her best. I've read and listened to all of her books and this one just falls a little short. Maybe the story was too fast. I'll still continue to buy her books!

Great Short Eve Dallas Novel

In Taken in Death, J.D. Robb has created an engrossing story that keeps you engaged and rooting for the good guys right to the end. And all the good guys are back in this story -- besides Dallas and Roark, the investigation includes Peabody, Macnab, and all the members of Dallas's team. The plot depends on an old, often used plot device which I can't name without being a spoiler, and Robb has given the old device new novelty and shine. The mission in this book involves locating and rescuing two young kidnapped children, and the key to finding them turns out to be a child's toy.

The author manages to pour a lot of tension and suspense into a book that is only a bit over 3 hours long.

The dark side

Would you try another book from C.J. Box and/or Holter Graham?

I have read every book C.J. has written and am a big fan. The Highway seemed to take a turn to the dark side and I did not like it, very disturbing and obviously will have a sequel.

What a twist

I am not sure how I will write this review without giving away any plot spoilers, but I promise not to give anything away even at the risk of being to vague for a decent review.

This book takes off on some familiar ground and is very entertaining and is obviously setting the stage for another well done, thought provoking, C.J. Box thriller. Bam! out of nowhere something happens that changes the course of all the following events, and I cannot talk about it or it will impact your experience with this book, and I cannot mention the downstream events either, or it will lead you to an obvious plot spoiler.

Suffice it to say that Box is one of my favorite authors, he writes great characters and involves them in suspenseful thrillers intelligently written around colorful locals in the American west. I think C.J. Box has yet to write a bad book, and this book continues the unbroken streak.

No, No, No!!!!

The first Cody Hoyt book was terrific, and I was looking forward to following him through a new story, but this was a huge letdown. The primary reason is one I can't share because it would ruin it for anyone who still wants to read the book, but it was a major upset and just plain disappointing ... tell me if you don't agree. Secondary reasons are that the "bad guy" was (a) just too creepy and unpleasant and (b) got way too much focus; the backup detective was very uninteresting and had the depth of a mud puddle; the back story about Hoyt's problems with his superiors was piecemeal and had little heft.

Just not up to his normal standard. Too much history and a general lack of action.

What disappointed you about Hidden Order?

I'm a huge Brad Thor fan and have enjoyed all his books but was left some what disappointed with this one. I felt the pace of this one was very slow and found myself speeding through parts. It was forever before there was some action.

Waiting for this book to start....

I waited for this book to start and it never did. Scott Harvath has a great resume and occasional tough language but as a character in this book (and much of the series) he is a non factor. In this book, the much better story line was taking place elsewhere. Brad Thor seems to like strong women and builds all of these stories around those women and how they save the day. Let's either make Harvath the hardcore hero or leave him out of the books altogether. So, if you come to this book looking for a Mitch Rapp or a Jack Reacher then move along. There is nothing to see here. On a positive note, Brad Thor does a good job of weaving history into his books. Such a good job in fact that it is much more compelling the his own work of fiction.

I happen to be a great fan of Brad Thor's novels. I love Harvath and his adventures. This was more of a police procedural and history lesson (which is great, as long as that is what you like). The story was very interesting and the information, which I am certain is true, is frightening, however I like Scott in action and kicking a**. He seemed too domesticated in this novel, a back seat character.

What would have made Hidden Order better?

this was more a hardy boys mystery combined with a history class. I appreciated the lesson on the federal reserve and american history. however, there virtually no suspense and no action. I expect more from a harvath novel. ive read them all...this is the only one i would not recommend. I think I miss mitch rapp already.

maybe go back and re-read some of the rapp books.

armand does good overall and does some of the characters very well. however, only george guidall (sp?) can capture the essence of harvath. same goes for mitch rapp.

Yes. Very good and plausible suspense thriller.

I thought Kate Rudd did a great job narrating all.

Very good 3rd book in the series. I don't see any more and certainly hope that Ragan will continue with these. Although there is quite a bit of jumping from past to present it is done in a coherent way that is easy to follow. I also really liked that at the beginning of each chapter there were quotes from real life well known serial murderers. I thought this added to the credibility of this book.

After readying the other reviews I almost didnt download it. There is nothing I hate more in a book that does not wrap everything up. For the person that made the comment about the couple being attacked by those guys. Please go back they did tell what happened to them and it was resolved. I'm not sure if you missed it or did not realize what happened.

the book does jump timelines quite a bit which was some times a little hard to follow but i would def recommend this book!

too many characters...

Too many characters stuggle to finish. Half way through I lost track of who was who. Why did the serial killer need three names? Well really 4 or 5? Then the extra story about the adoption could have been left out. Way too much going on in this book. I enjoy her novels so I will keep going in the series. But good grief the last time I took notes while reading I was in college studying for finals. Reading should be entertaining not work.

Another great Lizzy Gardner thriller!

A Dark Mind is Book 3 in T. R. Ragen's six book Lizzy Gardner thriller series.It completes my listening to the series. It is a superb thriller as are the other 5 novels in the series. Kate Rudd does an great job of narration of all six novels.

I highly recommend this entire series.

Thrillers are my genre of choice for fiction while romance novels are just the opposite. I remain impressed that romance writers such as Theresa (T. R.) Ragen, Jessica Ann (J.A.) Redmerski, and Lisa Gardner (who writes romance novels as Alicia Scott) also write great thrillers. I suppose I should also mention Nora Roberts who writes thrillers as J. D Robb.

Not Fond of Narrator, Characters Sterotypical

Zombie Doe, a young girl who had been tortured and was dead or nearly dead by New Years Eve, is thrown from the trunk of a dark sedan into the path of a party limousine. If she wasn't dead before she certainly was after she fell into a snarl of holiday traffic. Thus begins another of the Nikki and Sam serial killer adventures set in midwinter Minnesota.

Pros: Hoag is a competent writer so I don't regret buying and listening to this novel.

Cons: This is a narrator that I am not familiar with and I don't particularly care for his reading style. His female voices are particularly annoying.

The characters are lacking in development. I really had no emotional attachment to the kids (and Hoag generally does kids well) or to any of the victims. Usually there is a bit of ambiguity about the adult characters in her previous books leading to suspense, but it was clear right off who the bad guys were.

I also think that Hoag made a mistake making this a "message" story. There was a theme involving bullying in high school that sometimes had me skipping pages. I would cheerfully have turned most of the kids over to the serial killer. Georges St. Pierre got mentioned a lot and I finally broke down and googled him while writing this.

I missed the Sam and Tinks' (Nikki) cohesiveness as a Homicide partnership present in most of the other books. Tinks and Sam both seemed tired.

Love Harry Hole, RIP Robin Sachs :(

What did you love best about The Redeemer?

I love this book-- classic HH, with a thoughtful plot that takes place, as usual, between several countries. I was deeply saddened to hear the short tribute to Robin Sachs at the beginning, who passed away earlier this year. His beautiful narration was my favorite part of the previous audio HH books, but John Lee does an excellent job with the reading. It actually brought a tear to my eye-- when you fall in love with a series and the narrator, losing them is like losing an old friend.

I gave the story four instead of five stars, only because this book seems a bit more expositional and features Harry's friends and family less. One thing I've grown to love about these books is the wonderful supporting cast of characters. It's always fun to hear about Harry's relationships with his colleagues, and this installation in the series didn't have much of that. However, it's still very strong, a bit different than the other books, and minus the presence of Raquel and Oleg (they do make very minor appearances, emphasis on minor). It's also the first book with Gunnar Hagen as Harry's boss, and some of the playful interchanges between Harry and his old boss aren't there simply because his old boss has left Oslo. I missed more of those character moments. They are present in the book, but in much shorter supply than in previous and later HH stories. However, the same attention to multi-faceted characters is still very much alive in the writing of this story-- it's just applied to new characters, the Salvation Army contingent, Harry's new love interest, and the unstoppable hitman.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Yes, thought it's a bit more slowly-moving than other HH stories. However, it's always moving forward, and the action is expertly inter-woven between each character's story. It has moments of thrilling suspense, and many unexpected moments as well. As in the other books, Nesbo takes us into the mind of the antagonist, and that is always a treat. He treats his killers, crazies, and psychos as if they are humans, just like the rest of us, which makes them impossible to dismiss outright as just evil. In The Redeemer, we care about the "bad guy" and as with other HH stories too, the main villain is complicated, and has a strong reason for doing what he does.
