    Noir of the Future
In an alternate time line, technology has advanced civilization where within a few years the world is several centuries ahead. Even though advanced, crime still happens, only now criminals have new ways to cover their tracks. Private eye Martti Seppanen tracks crooks in a Los Angeles that noir detectives would hardly recognize. What happens when the murderer is someone who can control other people mentally? When the murder weapon is a bioengineered disease? And what if the victim is someone whose existence is a government secret and isn't quite considered human?

Detective stories in an alternate Earth timeline
Siliconhillbilly here; Mamie lets me use her account to buy books. But I have to pay ;-)
A very interesting collection of "future" detective stories. One novel and several shorter pieces, all set in an alternate earth timeline. Good, tight stories with some psi type twists and turns. I found them very entertaining. Dalmas is an excellent writer and his stories flow without the mental "bobble" some writer produce, where you need to stop and try and figure out just what they are trying to say.
Hours of engrossing, fun reading. BTW, I don't hand out 5 stars easily, but this is close IF you enjoy detective fiction.
    A Most Singular Book
This book is two short stories, or novellas with a novel between them. I've had the pleasure of hearing Dalmas read "A Most Singular Murder," but even if I'd just read it in the book, I'd still rate it highly. All three stories are tightly written, but without the complications for the sake of complication of some writers. The mysteries are very intricate and involved, and require the space they're given. I don't accept Dalmas' premises as a world-view, but find them very satisfactory as basis for a story, and, once one even conditionally accepts the premises, the story runs logically from there. Dalmas introduces us to some fascinating people and the story never drags. More proof that Dalmas continues to grow as a writer.
    fun romp
I enjoyed this book. The characters are engaging, the ideas are clever, and the mysteries are well crafted. There is nothing to dislike about this book!
On the other hand, there's nothing to set the book apart from hundreds of others I've read. It's not a "must read" book.
My advice: buy it and keep it around for the next time you need some light, escapist reading. You'll enjoy it, but you won't fall in love with it.

I really enjoyed this book and read it in 2 days
I really enjoyed this book and read it in 2 days, its a real page turner and I couldn't wait to get to the end of the plot!
Joe Dylan as always is a wonderfully flawed character and this book did not disappoint. Setting it in two very different parts of the world was a real plus for me.
    Joe Dylan...Top Man
Awesome book.Joe Dylan ROCKS.To the author:- You need to start writing quicker!
    Newman meets Ritchie
If James every has this book optioned as a film, then I'd be suggesting Guy Ritchie as director.
In many ways this is almost two books; there are the usual Dylan misadventures in Thailand, Newman's comfort zone, then the Ritchie-esque narrative as we delve into the murky world of British gypsies, drug deals and shady characters.
Duality in books can be a hit or miss affair but it is to Newman's credit that this one hits...often with as much force as a Brad Pitt punch in Snatch (but sans the occasional dodgy cockney accent)
Newman has his own peculiar writing style which stands out in a field of occasional blandness and is perfectly suited to the uber-complex and occasionally broken Joe Dylan as lead character. Dylan is one of those characters that, initially, it is hard to feel any empathy for. Which puts the onus on the author to work that bit harder to elicit said empathy. And work hard he does because over the 3 previous books to this you find yourself rooting for Dylan no matter his many faults.
There are some nice twists and turns and a suitably satisfying amount of bloodshed to jump this book from reading material level to page turner.
If you haven't met Joe Dylan yet, maybe it's time you did. Just make sure it's in a public place, in daytime, and with lots of witnesses
    Thrilling!!
Another fine effort by Author James Newman. The Joe Dylan Series, which began with such promise, continues to improve in this 4th installment. I liked that Newman stretched the canvas as Dylan returns to his original stomping grounds in England. Yet there is still included are the dark themes which emanate from Sin City (Pattaya). An intricate plot is key to a Joe Dylan mystery and The Black Rose does not disappoint in that regard. An absolute must for your tablet if you are a fan of the modern Noir genre. Highly recommended.
    Wildly Entertaining
Joe Dylan's at it again, this time down the mean streets of both Fun City, Southeast Asia, and the equally rotten lanes of the UK. There's a touch of Dickens in this, joining Newman's more obvious influences: William S. Burroughs, Charles Bukowski and Jim Thompson. It's dark stuff, but exciting to read, and funny at times. A couple of nicely-drawn female characters compliment the hard loving, hard drinking, drug-addled, fight-prone men. A nice mix. Also a nice mix are the shocking surprises mixed within the familiar genre. If you enjoyed the other Joe Dylan books, you'll like this one. If you haven't read the others, you can't go wrong starting with this one.

    Members Reviews:
    Action, AI, and then some!
Note: While this is Book 3 in the series, it works well as a stand alone, though it is definitely enhanced by enjoying the first 2 episodes previously. However, if you do pick this up as a stand alone, you might want to check out the glossary first to pick up some of the lingo, characters, and overall atmosphere of the series. For the audiobook, this glossary starts at the 59 minutes 20 seconds mark and lasts just over 14 minutes.
Devin Wayne is a hunted man and he doesnt know it yet. Hes just waking up to another day in the near-future New Orleans that is complete with AI, coffee, and annoying yet loyal friends. Mike has unexpectedly stopped by Devins hotel room and Devin, always on the edge, nearly took Mike for an assassin. Devin isnt far off the mark because Mike is there to deliver some bad news: a hit has been taken out on Devin and one of the most skilled assassins in the trade as been hired.
This addition to the series is quite different from Books 1 and 2. While Swept Away and Dinner Invitation were more cerebral and full of political intrigue, this book is all action. It starts with Devin pouncing on the unexpected Mike to their attempt to escape New Orleans to the cat and mouse game Devin and MCM play throughout the rest of the book. Also, theres no sex. Still, even though this book has a totally different tone, it is still pretty darn good.
Theres a decent amount of future tech built into this tale. I loved the vehicle AIs and all the stuff that can go wrong with such things. Then Devin, who is a highly skilled operative, has some tricks up his sleeve for evading MCM. Yet not to be outdone, MCM has some tracking gadgets that Devin and Mike werent expecting.
The action rolls in waves throughout the book so I never got battle fatigue from the story. Things start off mellow with Devin waking up and then he goes on high alert as he tackles an unexpected Mike. Things mellow out again as the two men catch up and then things peak again with the first attack from MCM. This really worked for me because I dont need one adrenaline rush after another in my stories.
The banter between the two men was very amusing. They obviously have a long history and have built up this trusting friendship over time. Like Mike, I was hoping just a little that Devin would describe some of his intimate moments with his girlfriend Irene Daco (who we met in Book 2) but I can respect a person who doesnt kiss and tell.

    Title: Drop Dead Punk
Subtitle: A Coleridge Taylor Mystery, Book 2

    Narrator: Donald Corren
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 49 mins

    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 1 votes
    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Noir
    Publisher's Summary:
Coleridge Taylor is searching for his next scoop on the police beat. The Messenger-Telegram reporter has a lot to choose from on the crime-ridden streets of New York City in 1975. One story outside his beat is grabbing all the front page glory: New York teeters on the brink of bankruptcy, and President Ford just told the city, as the Daily News so aptly puts it, "drop dead".
Taylor's situation is nearly as desperate. His home is a borrowed dry-docked houseboat, his newspaper may also be on the way out, and his drunk father keeps getting arrested. A source sends Taylor down to Alphabet City, where he finds two dead bodies: a punk named Johnny Mort and a cop named Robert Dodd. Each looks too messed up to have killed the other, so Taylor starts asking around. The punk was a good kid, the peace-loving guardian angel of the neighborhood's stray dogs. What led him to mug a woman at gunpoint? And why is officer Samantha Callahan being accused of leaving her partner to die, even though she insists the police radio misled her?
It's hard enough being a female in the NYPD only five years after women were assigned to patrol, and now the department wants to throw her to the wolves. That's not going to happen - not if Taylor can help it. As he falls for Samantha - a beautiful, dedicated second-generation cop - he realizes he's too close to his story. Officer Callahan is a target, and Taylor is standing between her and some mighty big guns.
    Members Reviews:
"Drop Dead Punk" Is a Strong Second Act for Coleridge Taylor, and a Very Solid Follow-Up to Zahradnik's 2014 Debut "Last Words"
The story starts out with the iconic Daily News 144-point banner headline from 1975, "FORD TO CITY: DROP DEAD." The narrative, however, never drops dead in this solid follow-up to Rich Zahradnik's debut 2014 novel, "Last Words." Zahradnik faithfully captures the feel of New York City in the throes of the 1975 financial crisis and uses it as the backdrop for a riveting mystery as full of dirty cops as "Serpico," which is referenced four times in the book. The mystery revolves around the death of police officer Robert Dodd, who appears to have been killed in an exchange of gunfire that also left the mugger he was chasing dead. As protagonist Coleridge Taylor, an investigative reporter, runs down all the conflicting details of the crime, he becomes convinced the shooting was a setup. If navigating a web of killers and dirty cops isn't enough, Taylor's newspaper folds in the middle of his investigation. How Taylor stays one step ahead of the bad guys, gets to the bottom of the story, even after he's out of a job, all make for a compelling read that leaps off the page with a great sense of place that captures the seedy, decaying New York of the 1970s.
Drop Dead NY makes a wonderful back drop for this crime thriller...
Another great read from Rich Zahradnik. Loved the NYC of the fiscal crisis and the intrepid reporter in Coleridge Taylor. Fun book, really solid summer read. This is book two from Mr. Zahradnik, I hope we get a bunch more. Crime reporting is a good view point to the plot twists and turns.
