    Publisher's Summary:
Kita Nekai, on the run and the smallest of her shifter clan-a calico cat among lions and tigers-is being hunted. She was expected to accept her role as her father's successor whether or not her cat was up to the task of leading the clan. She disagreed. Now she's less than a step ahead of the hunters, bone-tired, cold, and living hand-to-mouth in the city of Haven. And that's the high point of her day. She's also drugged, "accidentally" turned into a vampire, and sentenced to death for recklessly creating a rogue shifter who tortures its human prey. She's got 72 hours to find the rogue, evade a city full of hunters, prove she's not responsible for the rogue, and keep the vampire council from killing her. All while sorting out an apprentice mage, a married ex-boyfriend shifter-hunter, and the vampire who made her.

Starts slow but an excellent listen.
It took a little while to get into the Goodeve's voice, but after the first couple chapters it was hard to turn it off. The characters are well fleshed, the action relatively quick, and the storyline plausible. Kitta's character is a little illogical at times (always complaining, rarely willing to seek help even when she clearly needs it) but towards the middle of the book she gets a little more sense. The only character that really put me off was Bobby, since even though at the beginning of the story he mentions the fact that his mate is pregnant (and Kitta thinks about it once or twice), he never mentions it again. Nathanial is a good counterpoint to Kitta in his logical thoughts and patience to her lack of it. The back story doesn't always connect as well as it should to the current events but still, all in all, it was an engrossing listen and made a long plane ride go by much faster.
    Good story
I just finished listing to Once Bitten and Twice Dead and enjoyed them both very much. It's a nice twist to the old vampire story. Lots of action and angry vamp politics and blood. Definately worth the listen. There will be a 3rd installment. :)
Good story ruined by a bland narration
The narration is flat, bland, and conveys NONE of the stories strong emotions from Kita. Unless you need help sleeping, save your money and buy the paperback.
perhaps a better read than told?
The story is good, but the narrator, while clear and capable, seems to be stuck on a one-emotion voice. The narrator reads the book as though all is doom and gloom, no joy, no humor, no fun. She isn't atonal, just few emotional variations, and from what I've read of Kalayna Price, her stories go the emotional gamut. So, while I like the book, I think I'll try reading it if my library gets it in.
    Lots of promise
This is the first of what could be a good series. Kitta is a shifter that fled her land 5 years previous. She's been hiding out from her father, head of the clan and dodging hunters set to bring her home, when she almost meets her demise. Nathaniel rescues her, but has to turn her into a vampire in order to keep her alive.

    Publisher's Summary:
At last, in the novel every Kelley Armstrong fan will need to own, all the major heroines and heroes of Otherworld are united.
It's been 10 years since Bitten, the first novel in Kelley Armstrong's New York Times best-selling Otherworld series. In that time, hundreds of thousands of fans have ravenously devoured the adventures of Armstrong's witches, demons, and werewolves. Now, in Spell Bound, she brings them all together for her most sweeping tale yet.
Savannah Levine is in terrible danger, and for once she's powerless to help herself. At the heartbreaking conclusion of Waking the Witch, Savannah swore that she would give up her powers if it would prevent further pain for a young orphan. Little did she know that someone would take her up on that promise. And now, witch-hunting assassins, necromancers, half-demons, and rogue witches all seem to be after her. The threat is not just for Savannah; every member of the Otherworld might be at risk. While most of her fellow supernaturals are circling the wagons at a gathering of the council in Miami, Savannah is caught on the road, isolated from those who can protect her and unable to use her vast spell-casting talent, the thing she counts on most.
In a story that will change the shape of the Otherworld forever, Armstrong gathers Elena, Clay, Paige, Lucas, Jamie, Hope, and other beloved characters, who soon learn that the greatest threat to supernaturals just may come from within.

Will Savanna Grow-up -- The Big Question
I didn't realize that this series was going to end with a trilogy focused on Savannah. In this second to last book, Savannah finds herself without her powers and really questioning herself about her own self worth. It's a little disconcerting to she her confidence stripped away and then slowly build. Will she admit her feeling for Adam, will she escape? What will happen in the third book?
Okay, Armstrong does a great job with this second of the trilogy and next to last book of the series. This is a must read and I move on with eagerness to the third and last. This is a must read.
    Great work
Kelley Armstrong is got to be one the best writer I have every read know how to keep u in suspense and always leaves u wanting more.
    more
love this series! leaves me wanting more! excellent narration and suspenseful. please give me more
    Another great book!
A war is coming to the Otherworld, and Savannah Levine has lost her magic. Spell Bound is the story of how Savannah learns to cope with life???s trials. This story does contain the whinny growing pains of maturation, but the immature complaining is handled with tact and insight resulting in a journey of growth and understanding instead of indulgent persecutory delusions. Beloved characters such as Adam, Elena, Clay, Paige, Lucas, Jamie, Hope, Cassandra, and Troy are back, and Johanna Parker does a great job with the narration. All and all, this is another wonderful installment from Kelley Armstrong.
    Give me More!!!
Loved this!!! There were a few timing issues (dragged a little bit) but the main story was a great continuation of Waking the Witch and leaves the reader very interested in 13. I am really excited to see how everything goes down in 13.
    I really liked
    -Savannah's character development
-The way all the characters are coming together
    -Cassandra
    -Adam.

    Publisher's Summary:
Meet Jake. A bit on the elderly side (he turns 201 in March), but otherwise in the pink of health. The nonstop sex and exercise hes still getting probably contribute to that, as does his diet: unusual amounts of flesh and blood (at least some from friends and relatives). Jake, of course, is a werewolf, and with the death of his colleague he has now become the only one of his kind. This depresses Jake to the point that hes been contemplating suicide. Yet there are powerful forces who for very different reasons want - and have the power - to keep Jake alive.
Here is a powerful new version of the werewolf legend - mesmerizing and undeniably sexy, and with moments of violence so elegantly wrought they dazzle rather than repel. But perhaps its most remarkable achievement is to make the reader feel sympathy for a man who can only be described as a monster - and in doing so, remind us what it means to be human.
One of the most original, audacious, and terrifying novels in years.
    From the Hardcover edition.
    Critic Reviews:
A brilliantly original thriller, a love story, a witty treatise on male (and female) urges, even an existential musing on what it is to be human. Get one for yourself and one for the Twilight fan in your life. (James Medd, The Word , UK)
Space should be cleared for this violent, sexy thriller... The answer to Twilight that adults have been waiting for. (Courtney Jones, Booklist)
Yes, there are vampires here... But dont give this book to Twilight groupies; the frank tone, dark wit, and elegant, sophisticated language will likely do them in... smart, original, and completely absorbing. Highly recommended. (Barbara Hoffert, Library Journal)

The Ennui of a Naughty Dog
No pretty pony sparkles or virtuous animated corpses here! Rather, a 200 yr. old, sophisticated and philosophical lycanthrope, his glass of scotch, his cigarette, his journal, and the lunar cycle. Our man-wolf Jake matter of factly dismisses the ugly business of a werewolf's dietary needs, and insouciantly describes his sexual habits like National Geopgraphic doing Debbie Does Dallas. What you get is an adult, smart, hilarious, thriller that treats the old-guard monsters with the respect and fear they deserve! Raunchy? Absolutely! Goodness, I blushed... Then I watched my very distinguished Old English bulldog and realized that his narration of his persuit of a noble dog's life would probably read much like impulse-driven Jake's journal. I would accuse Sir Louie of being rudimentary--but never being crude or vulgar. Ethologically speaking, Jake is nonchalant--but he is no licentious lycanthrope! Great to read a very well written, clever "monster" book for adults, and the narration is an absolute treat.
Finally, the Return of the Werewolf
Can a book be both literary and genre? Yes. Can it be both successfully? Yes, see: The Last Werewolf.
I originally heard about this book via an NPR review and it languished on my to-read list for a long while until, when in need of my next book, I reviewed the synopses of the books on my to-read list. This one finally had it's turn to be what I was in the mood for. I loved it from the word go. The Last Werewolf was, for me, a perfect fit between what I was in the mood for and what the book (and the wonderful reader since I listened to this one) delivered.

    Actually a nice, light listen
I had this book in my library for a while now but had not listened to it. I had started to listen to it but then between school/work I just couldn't find the time to finish it. I finally finished though and I must confess it was pretty cool.
Katie Schorr seemed made to narrate this genre of books and is able to voice all three characters quite well. She does somewhat slow down the pace of the book a bit too much at times but that could be blamed on the story itself really rather than the narrator I believe. It wasn't a 'brilliant' performance but it wasn't a bad or simply adequate performance either.
This is my first Melissa de la Cruz and I was pleasantly surprised. I am not too much of a romance novel kinda guy but it had a strong enough storyline for me to forgive the romanticism that I saw involved. The story was fun to listen to especially when everything started to tie in together. It was slow at times however. I do think the characters could be developed better but seeing that these are all grown characters there wasn't much character development to be done (I blame the fact that I have come accustomed to really long and detailed titles rather than this relatively short title). There are some pretty nice twists in the book as well, I was surprised how the book tied everything together in the end.
Overall not a stellar title, but a pretty good one.

worst narrator, I've heard so far
I am going to buy the book, because I think the author has some good concepts, and I want to read this story. I just couldn't finish listening to this audio book.
The reason I listen to audio books is because I can work with my hands and let the narrator read to me, while I'm doing things around the house and in the yard.. this narrator was so bad, that I literally had to give up trying to listen to it. I just don't have the patience to try to interpret every single sentence for correct inflection and tense. It's as if the narrator didn't even bother to learn what punctuation in a sentence does. I really hate writing negative reviews, but these books are to expensive not to warn the next person.
    Worst Book Yet
The author manages to spends HOURS developing almost nothing resembling plot development, character development, tension, timeline or anticipation. The story is so very dry and poorly constructed, I found myself rewinding to ensure i had not entirely missed something important, which would not have surprised me considering I found myself thinking "why am I still listening to this...I should download something new".
Issue 1: The author loves to over explain the simple. Example: I do not need an explanation as to how a generator works. I know that diesel fuel is converted to energy, which is used in combustion to create compression, which turns a crankshaft...you get the idea. This is not a joke, he explains how a generator works. How is this relevant, at all, to plot building? There are a few of these. I even started my own monologue once where i was sure he was going to explain the workings and construction of the gun turret. Thankfully he did not.
Issue 2: Some mechanical research would have been appreciated. Example: no one with any, and i mean ANY, mechanical knowledge would write that deisel fuel would start to spoil after 10 days. What? Are you an....whatever.
issue 3: Who's on first? Whats on second? Very hard to follow who is where. There is no development in who is doing what, where and why.

Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Fantasy: Paranormal
    Publisher's Summary:
John Cleaver has called a demon - literally called it on the phone - and challenged it to a fight. He has faced two of the monsters already, barely escaping with his life, and now he's done running; he's taking the fight to them. But as he wades through his town's darkest secrets, searching for any sign of who the demon might be, one thing becomes all too clear: in a game of cat and mouse with a supernatural killer, the human is always the mouse.
In I Am Not a Serial Killer, we watched a budding sociopath break every rule he had to save his town from evil. In Mr. Monster, we held our breath as he fought madly with himself, struggling to stay in control. Now John Cleaver has mastered his twisted talents and embraced his role as a killer of killers. I Don't Want to Kill You brings his story to a thundering climax of suspicion, mayhem, and death.
It's time to punish the guilty. And in a town full of secrets, everyone is guilty of something.

LOVED IT... but is this the last?
This is a beautiful, emotional, turtourous, funny, sad, and everything in between book. This book has it ALL. The narration was flawless and made the book just so much more than if you read the book itself. I think I felt every emotion possible during this book.
This is not my normal genre but this has it all from humor, mystery, suspense, romance, & paranormal... Really, this is a book for anyone, it tugs at your heart.
I'm not quite sure though if this is a trilogy and it ends here or if there are more to come. There was a finality to some aspects of the story but then others were left open for more to come. I really hope there is more, I would love to see John grow, not just age wise but emotionally too. We saw a lot of emotional growth in this book but... He is just 16.
As you can read, I LOVE this series, and yes, I would absolutely recommend this book to everyone! Well done both Dan and Kirby.
**FIRST BOOK IS READ BY DIFF NARRATOR AND IT TAKES PATIENCE TO LISTEN TO IT BUT IF YOU DO, YOU GET A GREAT STORY WITH A MEH PERFORMANCE, BUT YOU ARE ALSO REWARDED WITH STELLAR PERFORMANCES FOR BOOKS 2 & 3**
    Awesome!
    Any additional comments?
I heard about Dan Wells from Writing Excuses, the podcast he is a part of that gives advice to struggling authors. I tried "I Am Not a Serial Killer" and was pleased by his writing, but I didn't much care for the reader. However, "Mr. Monster" and this book are awesome both because the reader has been changed, and because the stories continue to get better and better.
If you like the previous two, just read it.
If you read the previous two books in the series, just read this one too, you won't be disappointing.
While the previous books dealt with John's struggle and identity as a sociopath, here we see him in action accepting who he is and his mission in life. His personal life also develops entering a more serious relationship. Can someone without empathy be in a relationship?
Like the other books half the enjoyment is being inside this character's head, seeing how he sees and interprets 'normal' teenager and social situations. Anyone who struggled understanding people behaviours or emotions will identify. Book is full with humour, much of it dark.
The ending was great, you need to be a sociopath not to feel impacted by it.

Final Entry to a Great Series!

    Good fun and fast listening
This was one of the books I bought through audible sale. And as recommended it was a very entertaining read. I really don't need "hot steamy" sex in my urban fantasy books, which seems to be almost mandatory these days. Even though this book does have sexy scenes, it's not overwhelming nor excessive which was a big plus for me. Also the story was straight forward, easy to understand and the main character likable.
Unlike the other urban fantasy novels I read, Joanne is not an ass kicking "the best" weather warden ever. She needs help and gets it from a very attractive djinn named David. One thing I can say is that their romance is bit too hastely made. I mean I can see the attraction, appreciation, guilt and all that emotion jumbled together, but from that chaotic feeling to "true love" in several days? That was too convenient and quick.
The ending was something I didn't expect and I would like to read more in this series. I found it is actually a series with a nice ending (book 9) so now I have to go hunt more.
I recommend this series for anyone who likes a fun easy urban fantasy with a bit of romance!
    This is a great series!
This was a really fun "read". The characters are great, the story has an ending. (I hate it when a author writes a partial book, it always feels like rip off).
I knew when I was only half way through the book, that I wanted to follow this series. The narrator is great. Dina Pearlman is a real talent.
I would recommend the "Weather Warden" to anyone that enjoys books like "One foot in the Grave" by Jeaniene Frost, and or "City of Ghosts" by Stacia Kane.
    An entertaining listen . . .
The story's fast-paced and entertaining. The narrator is superb, and that's a help, too. This author takes a fresh approach to material that's been touched on before. Her heroine is flawed, but that's what makes her interesting. Nice descriptions, good writing, and an interesting cast of characters.
Oh my! Why did I wait so long?

First Thought when Finished: Oh my! Why did I wait so long to start reading these!
Story Thoughts: Confession: Urban Fantasy is always hit/miss with me. I love strong women characters but I also need them to not be totally unidentifiable (they must have quirks and flaws). Ill Wind was right on the money with what I expect out of a very good Urban Fantasy novel.

    Publisher's Summary:
New York Times best-selling author Simon R. Green has crafted numerous acclaimed science-fiction and fantasy novels, including Blue Moon Rising, Blood and Honor, and Shadows Fall. In this first installment of the Ghost Finders series, JC Chance, Melody Chambers, and Happy Jack Palmer are agents of the Carnacki Institute - a place where the sole purpose is to do something about ghosts. But what exactly? Lay the spirits to rest? Send them along their merry way? Or maybe just kick some ghoulie butt?

I LOVE Simon R Green. But....
What did you like best about Ghost of a Chance? What did you like least?
I have loved Greens books so much, that I feel like I'm betraying a friend by saying this. But this book didn't work. I don't even know where it went wrong. Maybe it's because I'm spoiled by John Taylor and Eddie Drood. But I gave this book more chances than it deserved. After I had lost interest, I still put-on my headphones, rewound and tried to find interest. It just wasn't there. It felt like recycled second rate monsters and second rate talent.
I don't think I even got half way through the book. If you've never read his other works, it may work. Then you can graduate up and be blown away.
    Nightside on the ghost side
I like Simon Green's work for two reasons -- first, they're silly and second they're British. This new series seems is pretty similar to the Nightside series, same author voice, same phrasings, same random inclusion of highly unlikely characters and plot directions. I'll probably keep reading it, provided the prices don't get too high. Green appeals to my sense of fun, although I wish he'd drop some of his over-used phrasings. "It was the easiest thing in the world" comes immediately to mind.
    No Real Connection
I've never read one of Simon R. Green's works again, and I'm a bit hesitant to give his work another try.
Despite this books' place as the first in a series, I never really felt like the author helped me connect to the characters. Although they each had their own little quirks, all of the characters seemed to fit types from previous books that I've read. JC, Melody, and Happy never really seemed real, so I wasn't as concerned about what happened to them. In all honesty, it seemed like a first draft of work that never really got revised. The plot seemed a bit repetitive and since the character development never really happened, the plot didn't ever really seem to pull me in as much as I'd hoped. The narrator/performance was fine, but not memorable.
Overall, I was hoping for something better.
If you liked Nightside you like this series
This is book one of the "Ghost" hunter series. typical Simon R Green. and the narrator does a fine job. Book two "Ghost of a Smile" was equally good and leaves off for another title. I enjoy SRG's stories and so far the narrators on the "Nightside" series and this on has been excellent. Well worth it for a SRG fan.
    Ghost of a Chance
I'm addicted to Simon R. Green; sometimes I haven't loved the narrators for his work, but Toby is very good. I wasn't sure there was going to be enough action in this book to keep me listening; but then the "Vampire Sharks" showed up and once again I was rivited. Go Simon!

    Publisher's Summary:
New York Times best-selling author Simon R. Green creates a fantastical world in his Secret Histories series, in which the Drood family protects mankind from creatures of the night.
Eddie Drood is not happy about being the new head of the family, especially now that everyone believes either he or his girlfriend, Molly, was responsible for the former matriarchs death. Since Eddie knows he didnt do it, he doesnt like where this is going.
    Critic Reviews:
"This gripping, fast-paced, emotionally intense fourth volume in Green's Secret Histories series is sure to delight fans of paranormal investigator Eddie Drood and his girlfriend, the fabulously strong and strong-willed witch Molly Metcalf....Fans of the series will be delighted by the deft combination of urban fantasy adventure, sharp-edged sarcasm, and treachery upon treachery, which make this installment strong enough to stand alone as a great introduction to Green's work." The Imortals
In book four of the Secret Histories series, Simon Green introduces us to the Anti-Droods. The polar opposites of the Drood family and everything they stand for, The Immortals. The plot thickens as new enemies become powerful and allies appear out of the most interesting of places. Eddie Drood is vexed by two deaths his Grandmother, The Matriarch and the death of his Molly. Molly Metcalf the wild witch of the woods. As Eddie uncovers the murderers he also uncovers the plot to release the hosts of Hell upon the earth. It's a nail bitter right up to the end if Eddie will pull it off or will Roger Mornigstar not have to travel to get home for thanksgiving this year. The Armorer amazes us with his toys as Eddie fights again to save the world. It is the best of the series but not the last, as Simon Green left us with a classic cliffhanger ending.
    nightside comes back
Would you consider the audio edition of From Hell with Love to be better than the print version?
It was like a mini crossover. All my favorite players in one book.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
    Please don't. I prefer imagination.
    Loved it!
I'm a big fan of Simon R. Green. I typically like to read his books, have read all of his Nightside and Shadow Falls but for some reason, the Droods are much more fun to listen to. I have the first 4 of the Secret Histories books on audio, I enjoyed the narration on this one the best so far. Very happy with this purchase.
    Good continuation of series
Action packed, fun listen. The author tends to over-use and re-use phrases a bit much, but the plotting is strong. Could have done without the cliff-hanger ending, too.
    Good silly fun
The structure of the book is this: semi-comic banter between some characters followed by a battle with lots of things blowing up. Repeat. Repeat again. There's some suspense but not so much that you'll be late for work because you can't bear to pause the story. The novel's ending is a cliffhanger but you know the situation isn't what it seems. It's sort of a super-hero comic for grownups.
I bought the book during a sale and wouldn't use a regular credit on any others in the series. Despite the clever banter, puns and asides, the writing is too formulaic for me.
