If you are at this point in the series, you are probably already invested.

More of the same (in a good way) - solid writing, great voice work (hey, it's Brick)

One observation, not really a criticism -- the story in this installment is a little less self-contained. I think the episodic plot, the immediate issue or "mystery" that the protagonist deals with, takes a back seat to service the overall plot arc of the series. there is less about the immediate threat and more about complications in the recurring world and overall situations, and the story ends with issues maybe a little more open. It feels like a set-up for the next installments.

(much like Part II of abt any classic trilogy behaves)

It's not really a negative

while it would be a clever trick to be able to close the story AND keep momentum, that would just be a clever trick -- I think the change in pacing keeps the series from falling into a "set em up...knock em down" monotony and seems to be a common and natural place to open up a story to a larger arc (Dresden Files book 3 does this very clearly and the Harry Potter series also follows this rhythm for instance).

-the short term characters,situations nd themes are quite interesting

-the author is not afraid to make the threats a little more abstract and complex (protagonist having to juggle multiple elements)

- the long term characters are not too precious for change

If you are this far in, you'll enjoy it, I did

just prepare to immediately want book 4 (in production) to tie things up.

I loved the Joe Pit Series and So Will You!

I love the Joe Pitt series, because it is something so unique, extremely well written and a great performance. The series embodies the very elements of the Heros Journey. Yes, we know, this is book 3 of a 5 part series, and it was recorded after My Body, which is the last book in the series.

Decent Story

The Story/plot was pretty good, however the narration wasn't. I had to rewind several times as the monotonous tone of the reader had me drifting. The lack of inflection, and rise and fall of voice had me falling asleep several times. Get someone else to read this series as I believe it is a decent one. In my opinion buy the book.

This is the latest series I'm listening to. As a first book, it was a pretty good start and the series keeps getting better as it evolves. I just bought book 5 and plan to get the rest. The only odd thing I had to deal with was trying to imagine tall sexy goblins. I've always thought of them as squat ugly things; but I just picture Legalos with fangs.

Worth the listen

My type of book, with the heroine who may be in over her head, will never walk away from doing what is right, even if she expects to die doing it. Her family may be the most notorious pirates around the seas, but she loves them anyway. While searching (which is her talent) and trying to keep her pirate cousin out of trouble she is attached to the most evil magical power. After fighting off those who wish to misuse this stone, and discovering her father used to be the protector of the stone is now vanquished inside the talisman she must go on to find a way to disconnect the stone from her before it eats her soul as well. Loved by both the most black magician around and the strongest white magician around, although neither will admit it, she must continue stumbling her way while trying to remain alive.

Great story, substandard narration.

There is a rhythm and a beat to a well written, first person, story. Lisa Shearin feels it, Raine Benars has it. Unfortunately for the listener, Eileen Stevens has neither; at least not in this first installment of the series.

This is a happening story. It's fun, fast, believable, and full of magical mayhem of the highest caliber. Raine Benars, elf, is a street kid at heart. She has high standards, but they may not always reflect those of her society. She finds things for a living.

Great story worth the listen!

Where does A Kiss Before the Apocalypse rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

My wife and I have listened to many audiobooks of the same/similar genre and we've loved this one the most.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

The plot kept us listening til the end just to see if Remy was successful in his quest.

Which character as performed by Luke Daniels was your favorite?

Our favorite character/s had to be Remy and of course Marlow.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

We laughed at some of the witty remarks the characters made. The epilogue actually moved my wife to tears.

This is one of the best audiobooks we've listened to in quite a while.

I would compare this book to the series Supernatural, though a little more gritty and in depth with more of a love of angels and dogs.

Luke Daniels never lets me down, even if the story does.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Every interaction with Remmy and his wife gets to me. I can't think of a person, male or female, who wouldn't think: I hope it's like that for me...

Angelic Urban Fantasy

Why did I pick this book? I had just finished all the so far published Dresden books and this book looked very similar ... and I was right. If you like the Dresden Files you're almost guaranteed to like this one.

Overall story ... I'd give it a four. It's a good detective yarn, fun story, good characters. But the reason I gave it a five star review is because of the world that Thomas created. Thomas creates a rich world with wonderful background history, and awesome detail. I would love to just explore the world that Remy Chandler lives in.

Like it better than the first book

I actually liked this book as a lady gumshoe story than a urban fantasy. I really didn't see why Anna has to be a vampire in this book. She could have been a normal human being dealing with paranormal beings. I enjoyed this second story a lot better than the first book in the series. I hope Anna uses her full potential as a vampire in the next book.

The Story Is Worth The Listen

While the deadpan delivery of the narrator takes some getting used to, I think the story is worth listening to. Anna Strong is not the brightest fledgling vampire on the block and yet I am enjoying the story and will try book three as well.

Very disapointing

I was hoping the main character would be a bit more intelligent in this book than the previous one. But I could not get passed more than 3 and a half hours before I just quit listening to this book. The main character seems very witless, and seems to have no investigative skills for a bounty hunter. Also she doesn't think things through whats over then wonders why she has problems. She's overly secretive and not subtle about it, which causes her problems. She constantly lies to everyone she supposedly cares about and trusts no one except complete strangers. I would not recommend this series if you are looking for a intelligent story that you won't be spending half your time rolling your eyes asking "why are you doing that?"

She's a great Narrator, 5 stars all the way

Really Good Series

I'm really enjoying this series so far. This is the second book and I am happily going onto the third. Unlike some of the other reviewers, I find the narrator, Dina Pearlman, excellent for this series. She has a good smokey tone with a haunting delivery for action scenes that make them almost like a film in slow-motion---very effective and unusual. And it reminds me a bit of a Raymond Chandler-type of narration.

As in the first book, I like the other characters including some very "good" smarmy villians! Also, lots of unexpected plot twists that I appreciate. The only one drawback is the same one as in the first book---what little sex there is, is so tame as to be dull.

But I think Anna's vampire character is spot on because she's new to the vampire world and discovers she needs "training", so it stands to reason that she doesn't make all the right decisions at first. Besides, it makes her more human that the reader can relate to.

Anyway, fun series that I certainly recommend.

Would you listen to Kitty's House of Horrors again? Why?

I would listen to Kitty's House of Horrors again because I enjoy this series and the narrator is especially good at bringing Kitty to life.

What other book might you compare Kitty's House of Horrors to and why?

I would compare Kitty's House of Horrors, and the Kitty Norville series, to the Sookie Stackhouse world, but much with much better writing and more consistency. What makes them similar is the strong theme of how society reacts when they become aware of the existence of paranormals.

Have you listened to any of Marguerite Gavins other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have really enjoyed Marguerite Gavin in several other of the Kitty Norville books. She does a particularly good job of capturing the DJ vibe to give voice to Kitty. Recently, I also started The Hollows series, also narrated by Marguerite. The narration has been just as good in this series. She does a fantastic job with creating distinct voices for a broad range of characters.

I give a lot of credit to the narrator for my enjoyment of this series. In previous books there have been a lot of "on air" scenes. Marguerite makes what could be boring scenes interesting and lively.

Defintely would recommend this series and this book.

I felt as if I was one of the protagonist with all the terrifying fears that Kitty and her companions went through.

I am not sure that this is my favorite book in the series as I was scared more than I would care to admit; on the other hand, if a writer can make me feel this much through such a book, I can only bow my head and say thank you for allowing me to be along Kitty and her terrifying adventure and feel like one of Kitty's friend and only wish I could have done something to help. Renewed my Vows in Vegas Right After Reading this!

Ok, something about the name "Kitty" turned me off this book for about a year, finally I gave into to all the recommendations. I am glad I did. She is funny and so unlucky, it reminds me of Stephanie Plum in Janet Evanovich series, but much much more unlucky. I got hooked quickly and I only have one book left in the series. Each book builds on the last, and average about 7 hours a piece just enough time for Kitty to get herself in trouble and right back out of it again. This is not a deep book but enjoyable just the same. It's light at times, funny, and then serious but not so overwhelming that you can't set it down and come back to it. Its a good light read and the narrator was just perfect for the book, she tells the story in a light enjoyable way, and she has become the voice of Kitty in my mind.

A bit chaotic!

This is a good story but it feels incomplete, like a PART I. The characters are not as developed as her other books. Kitty is still a great main character and this about her trip to Vegas to get married to Ben....add a radio show, her parents, and Vegas chaos intertwined with were-tigers, vampires, bounty hunters and a poker tournament. It just didn't flow as well as the other books but you need to read it because the next book picks up where this left off. It was OK, not great!

I would recommend this entire series to my friends, Kitty is a great heroine, she's funny, smart and a genuinely nice person...she cant help it if someones alway trying to kill her....lol

where the series is taking us in future books. I enjoy the relationship between Kitty and Ben. Being an attorney myself, I like Ben as a coolheaded partner to Kitty's trouble causing curiousity and frankness.

Absolute power corrupts absolutely

This is a typical Richelle Mead book. Meaning, its fantastic. If youre not familiar with the authors writing (Georgina Kincaid or Vampire Academy series) then, to put it simply, the writing is dynamic and sexy. The characters motivations, loyalties, and appeal to the reader change from chapter-to-chapter but in a way thats believable and credible to each character. For example, Eugenie in Storm Born hates the fae, kills them liberally, and is disgusted by non-human men and at the end of Storm Born, her feeling about her own heritage can best be described as self-loathing and fear. In Thorn Queen, these feelings shift. Richelle Mead delves into what it means to be human the good, the bad, and the ugly. She also discovers what it means to rule, to be responsible for others, and how far she's willing to go to protect them. As always, the sex scenes are phenomenal. Between kinky bondage sex with Dorian and the rough, passionate instinct-driven sex with Kiyo, I enjoyed the emotion that came along with it. It causes a good deal of tension and drama. Here we really see Eugenies jealousy of Maiwenn, Kiyos ex-girlfriend and another fae queen, whose pregnancy has brought Kiyo so much joy and the insecurity this causes to Eugenie who knows she can never risk getting pregnant because of the prophecy.

Jennifer Van Dyck, who also narrates Rachel Vincents Shifters series, has a no-nonsense tone, that works well since Eugenies character is supposed to be tough, butt-kicking and over-all intimidating. Her voice for Dorian is proper - slightly British, very aristocratic, bored and self-involved it is just as the man is described. I also enjoyed how the reading generally reflected the tone of whats happening in the book. Not to give too much away, but there is a scene in this audiobook that concerns abduction, drugging, and sex assault. Jennifer Van Dycks voice slowed and becomes detached, which deepens the experience for the listener.

Intense, sexy and captivating

This is a wonderful sequel to book one. Characters are deep and colorful. The reader is great - lots of inflection, believable voices. You'll love it.

Excellent

I listened to all nine stories in a week having just discovered the fun of audio books on my ipod. Love the series.

Dead & Gone continues the storyline and expands further on Sookie's fairy heritage and we find out a little more about Eric - always a bonus. I always thought fairy's were too good to be true.

Looking forward to the new one in May.

Very good

After the disappointing (IMO) "From Dead to Worse", this is one of the stronger parts in the series. Nevertheless, sometimes I'm surprised how Sookie can miss some obvious hints as to what's going to happen next (the same was with the summit's surprise in "All Together Dead"). Well, otherwise, there would be no fun, right?

Again, -1 star for the poor quality of the audio. :( (BTW, did anyone else notice Johanna Parker lost the accent that Eric used to have e.g. in part 1?)

I love the Sookie Stackhouse Series!

Loved it, and I don't like Boxing

Boxing has to be my least favorite sport. I don't even like any of the rocky movies. I was skeptical then when I noticed what a big role boxing played in this book. But it was an amazing listen. The world created in this book is vivid and fascinating and the characters have real depth. Though it isn't a fast paced book I was never bored. I found myself coming up with reasons to drive around in my car so I could listen to more of this book.

Also I thought the reader did an excellent job she added to the experience of hearing the story and did not distract from it with a strange accent or annoying voices.

Jacqueline Carey touches on something different

From what I have read of the author, her characters all are fighting personal demons,even in the Kushiel series which I enjoyed. This is a bit different, but none the less a journey into plots and the strength of will to over come. Not the best work by JC but not half bad. Hoping for another book in this series to explain more and deepen the characters as in the Kushiel series. If you are expecting Kushiel then skip this, if you can open your mind to a different kind of country that many of us believe we are living in you might be surprised and say I can believe that our government has been hiding things for years.

Jacqueline Carey continues to shine!

This is a great story and unlike her other books. This story is very interesting and hooks you right from the start. The narrator is just OK. I will buy the next book that should come out late in 2011.

Different from Kushiel

This was my first audiobook so I wanted to pick something I knew I would like.Well, I did and I didnt. This book is nothing like the Kushiel books,if thats what your looking for..dont get this book.To me this book is total drama with very little adventure.I liked the readers voice but I started wishing she would just read and not change tone for the male roles.The f word was used overmuch.Loup had little emotion,when her love done her wrong you got nothing...no anger just "I understand".The description of the book is slightly misleading but the story was good and very different.If a Santa Olivia 2 comes out I will want to read it just to see what happens next.

Loved It!

Wow! This was my favorite Jacqueline Carey novel. Of course, those who know me know that the book I am currently reading is always my favorite!

If you are a fan of James Patterson's Maximum Ride books but maybe longed for something a little more mature, you will love this book, too. I think I should warn of language, and sexuality.

It's alright.

If you are reading this review, you likely already know if you are getting this or not. You are either totally plugged into the Nightside or you burned out a while back.

So, for those of you who will be continuing on, let me tell you. . .it's not as good as some, not as bad as others. Green has improved as a writer since we started our journey, but he still lacks as a storyteller sometimes.

There isn't really a villain in this book. Ok, our heroes aren't all that nice *in the Nightside*, but there are those people who take evil to that next level *in the Nightside*. (Sorry, I wanted to know what that felt like, *in the Nightside*.)

Anyway, John goes after what is really a force of nature style antagonist. John catches up to him, they talk, the antagonist kills a bunch of people (and things) and then moves on. Then, John catches up to him, they talk, the antagonist kills a bunch of people (and things) and then moves on. Then, John catches up to him, they talk, the antagonist kills a bunch of people (and things) and then moves on. . .

. . . and then a solution happened that caused my suspension of disbelieve to totally fall apart and I began to ask if Green was aware of what his main character gets up to in the books.

That's the story. It's worth a listen if you're still into touring the Nightside. Green makes the setting just as wonderful as ever, but he has found a new form of repetition that his editor needs to beat out of him.

As for the Narration, Vietor is always amazing.

Formulaic Plot, Amazing World and Characters

What made the experience of listening to Just Another Judgement Day the most enjoyable?

Marc Vietor is a great narrator. He really knows how to capture and convey a scene to the listern.

If youve listened to books by Simon R. Green before, how does this one compare?

This one is middle of the road in terms of the Nightside series. After a while you can spot the where the plot is going by and large but the world and characters are so captivating, you can't help but love it.

When made their way through Precious Memories. I'd go into more detail but..spoilers.

The series is rather formulaic but the world is so alive that each time you start a new book you're hoping that old characters will pop in for a scene or two.
