Irene Meets Starla or Drifter Meets Rebel
Irene is not your normal teenager. You see she has plan to open her own hair style shop in the big city. It's going to take the fashion world by storm and it's going to be called Heroine Hair styles. All the famous female hair styles from books to movies will be on display! It will be a hit! She will be famous!
Well, maybe not as soon as she wants since she got fired from her mom's hair salon after her first week. One small misstep on her road to greatness. But you know what her mom just doesn't get it and neither do all those fussy ladies who want latest and greatest hair styles.
Mom has a backup job though since she doesn't want Irene sitting around all summer. Her friend has two rambunctious children that need watching while she is at work and with some reassurance from Irene's mother she gets the job. The kids love Irene but, its the kind of job you expect from trying to entertain two pre-teen kids during the long hot summer months.
Irene would much rather be talking to her friends about all the exciting things they are doing and she is not, gossiping about the local boys and working on her ideas for Heroine Hairstyles. One fateful day though the kids drag her off to the beach and after a brief misadventure she meets Starla.
Starla is everything that Irene is not. She is outspoken, everyone pays attention to her and she doesn't care about what any one thinks. Irene can't help it, she wants to know more about this girl. As Irene gets drawn farther into Starla's version of the world she must confront what she thinks about herself, what her beliefs are, and if she is willing to pay the price of being "noticed".

This is not the type of book that I normally read, but I picked it up at a thrift shop since the story sounded interesting. I'm glad I did as it mostly skips the simplified / generic stories that most of these books tend to have. In other words it doesn't, mostly, have that after school special tone that I remember a lot of these books having.
Irene doesn't have a perfect life, her father passed away when she was young, her mother has gone through a succession of boy friends since she is lonely, and Irene herself is drifting along in a world that never changes. As in life when change is introduced other issues get looked at with a new perspective and Irene has to figure out where she fits into her new world view.
This may be a book for teens but I really liked the story and it doesn't have a lot of melodrama and very little violence other than a few descriptions of what happens when mom's boy friend has one of his "fits". I would recommend this to any one who likes reading coming of age stories set in modern times with a bit of drama and humor thrown in.

"Does salvation have a number? How many lives must I save before I'm redeemed?"
18-year-old Kasia Maier planned to spend her summer studying turtles in the sand prairie, not trudging through fearsome backwaters with her new coworker, Blayne. Great read for something a creepy yet different!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Overall, Rivers Edge is a nice break from the normal YA fare. The protagonist is believable, not a defiant Elizabeth Bennet type or a boy-crazywell teen. Kasia is relatable without the reader making you understand that she is truly relatable. The writer has a great humbleness in her writing and it will be exciting to see that develop in Rivers Edges sequel.
What did you like best about this story?
The author plays around with an internal struggle within in a confused teen, an almost staple in YA novels, but what makes this turmoil different, what makes this turmoil interesting, is the fear conveyed in Kasias voice and thoughts -- something the narrator, Carin Gilfry Lawrence, conveyed quite aptly. Kasia is truly scared, and the readers know it. The slow grow in the in play for most of the novel, making the readers invest in the main character before they decide what fate they want for the protagonist. It can become annoying at times, more so if you are used to a fast-paced read, but the pay-off is worth it. Not only that, but it was exhilarating to not know what could possibly happen next. Most readers arent versed in Slavic mythology so kudos to Horn for not only picking an interesting foundation for her world, but also picking something most writers havent exhausted.
Which character as performed by Carin Gilfry Lawrence was your favorite?
It would be a spoiler, but a certain something has an amazing Russian accent that Lawrence nails. I loved it.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I can't say that it did, but I don't think this is that kind of book. Everything in this novel is subtle -- yet effective.

I bought 12 of these for my girl scouts that were moving up to 6th grade!! They seemed to really like it!!
    Five Stars
My daughter and her BFF loved this book. So helpful.
    Cool
I liked the fact that it was written by girls my age! And it thought me so much about teen life and school.
    My Daughter Loves This Book
I got this for my youngest daughter the summer before she started middle school. She was very anxious about the change to a new school. My daughter read this book in a day, laughed out loud several times, and really loved it. She even pointed out passages and sections to me, so it was something that we could share. I truly believe it helped allay some of her fears and concerns. The book was apparently written by a group of girls who were in or recently completed middle school, which I think made it more "real" for my daughter. I highly recommend it for girls getting ready to attend or already in middle school. (Maybe not so much for boys.)
    I love this book!!!
This book is very helpful to me because I'm scared to become a woman and I am scared I might let everyone down! This book has gave me confidence and is really funny!!!This also help me with bullies!!

Attracting tens of thousands of men and women hoping to strike it rich, the Klondike gold rush brought with it a frenzy of activity unlike anything the world had ever seen. The few children who lived in Dawson City and its surrounding mining camps had front-row seats to this treasure hunt of the century - and to all the antics that a lust for gold brought with it. In this, her companion book to the best-selling Women of the Klondike, Frances Backhouse explores the experiences of the children who followed their parents north in search of fortune or were born in the goldfields. With anecdotes that range from humorous to heartbreaking, Children of the Klondike paints a detailed picture of what it was like to grow up in a rough yet cosmopolitan northern frontier community populated by lucky millionaires, down-and-out dreamers, scarlet women, and a few adventurous families.
    Editorial Reviews:
Journalist Frances Backhouse's The Children of the Klondike presents the true stories of the youngest gold rushers. In far northwest Canada during the turn of last century, the young on the frontier faced disease, freezing weather, separation from their parents, and a lack of schooling. Laural Merlington's passionate performance brings to life Backhouse's well-researched historical accounts. Merlington gives voice to the real letters and memoirs of those involved. For the history buff, or just about anyone enthralled by adventure, this audiobook will transport the listener right to this northern frontier.

good as a young adult book
This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
This is a very simplistic introduction and appears to be for an immature audience, explaining things that should be well known to anyone with a decent education. It comes across as a book for 12-14 year old children.

    Language: English
    Release date: 03-12-13
    Publisher: Audible Studios

    Genres: Teens, Ages 11-13
    Publisher's Summary:
A coming-of-age novel about bullying, mothers and daughters, and the collateral damage of family secrets
    Every secret has a price.
For most girls, sleepaway camp is great fun. But for Amy Becker, it's a nightmare. Amy, whose home life is in turmoil, is sent to Camp Takawanda for Girls for the first time as a teenager. Although Amy swears she hates her German-immigrant mother, who is unduly harsh with Amy's autistic younger brother, Amy is less than thrilled about going to camp. At Takawanda she is subjected to a humiliating "initiation" and relentless bullying by the ringleader of the senior campers. As she struggles to stop the mean girls from tormenting her, Amy becomes more confident. Then a cousin reveals dark secrets about Amy's mother's past, which sets in motion a tragic event that changes Amy and her family forever.
Camp is a compelling coming-of-age novel about bullying, mothers and daughters, and the collateral damage of family secrets. It will resonate with a wide range of teenage listeners. Camp will be a strong addition to school recommended listening and summer listening lists, and it is appropriate for anti-bullying programs. Mostly, though, Camp is a story for mothers and daughters to share.
    Editorial Reviews:
Casey Holloway performs the young adult audiobook Camp in the winsome and authentic voice of a teenage girl who trades a troubled home life for an even more troubled existence at camp one fateful summer. Holloways voice manages to capture the nuances of the mean girls who torment the 14-year-old narrator as well as the German accent of the narrators cold and formidable mother.
Elaine Wolf is insightful in her treatment of bullying, and female listeners especially may recognize the myriad teenage characters who wield such social power. Holloways multifaceted performance highlights delicate female relationships like those between mother and daughter, popular girl and newcomer. The novel concludes with a deep, though sad, emotional payoff.

Whether or not sleep away camp is a good or bad thing has nothing whatsoever to do with ...
While I did find this book to be a bit on the obvious side as I read it, once I had finished, I realized that might have been necessary. Upon going back to check some of the negative reviews given here, I feel simplistic, "whack you over the head" plots are probably not obvious enough for some people. Whether or not sleep away camp is a good or bad thing has nothing whatsoever to do with this book's objective. For those offended by the author's depiction of camp, that was merely a setting for the playing out of human behaviors. The author wanted to place the main character, already the victim to some abuse and, therefore, accustomed to and habitually cowed by it, in an even more isolated setting. Having abuse so extreme, intolerable and unbelievable directed at her, and having those around who might have helped either join the bully in abuse, not see the abuse, look away and ignore it, or give ineffective help-----these were deliberate plot choices. There is a parallel being drawn there, to the Holocaust and to many other situations, small and very large, going on around us constantly.

    Genres: Teens, Ages 11-13
    Publisher's Summary:
Thirteen-year-old Molly Gerry and her older sister Colleen's world is rocked when their father dies, leaving them penniless. Their best hope seems to be leaving their small Illinois town to work at a Harvey Eating House in Raton, New Mexico. Molly manages to appear 18 (the minimum Harvey Girl age) in order to get the job and soon catches on to the rhythm of life beside the railroad tracks. She continues to struggle with the desire to return home and worries about the fact that the outlaw Genius Jim is still on the loose. Inspired by the author's great-grandmother's experiences, this historical bildungsroman shows life out west in the late 1800s in all its flash and grittiness. Molly is a solidly drawn character, attracted more to cooking than serving and determined to be honest and fair in her work. The outlaws provide spice, and the romance Molly tries to conjure up for Colleen gives humor. The values of education, courage, and simplicity all come together in this delightful tale.

    Harvey Girls finally getting attention
I originally bought this book for my daughter, but ended up reading it myself. She prefers to read fantasy not historical fiction. This story is very similar to the Dear America books and is well written.
    good book
enjoyed this very much :D ... good for all ages .. a must read for those who are interested in this time period of history
    Not for younger students
Writing this review simply because I would have wanted to know this before purchasing. Would have preferred not to have the discussion about kissing in the first few pages (incl. a reference to open-mouthed kissing) in a book that I was hoping to read with mid-elementary students interested in history. Did not find that necessary. Decided to skip this one although it is a beautiful looking book about an interesting time in history.
    Fun Historical Novel
Wonderful story, particularly if you are interested in this area band period of Western history. Imaginative and entertaining; definitely recommended for young and old alike.
    Fascinating
It was interesting to read When Molly Was a Harvey Girl. At first I was afraid the book might be boring, but as it turned out I was very wrong! Though the book is directed toward a younger age group (ages 9-12) the historical fiction was fascinating. I loved reading about how the Harvey Eating Houses worked. And as for the story, it is a nice coming of age tale with characters that at one point or another children can relate to. I would especially recommend When Molly Was a Harvey Girl to young girls (ages 8-12) as well as anyone interested, of course. Review by R.C., 16 yrs old, Biblio Reads Children's Book Review

When they move to Michagan in search of a job, they face hard times. Also,Summer's strangeness turns into a mental illnesss. Summer Lyric, and their dad prove that love and faith will get them through anything. In my opinion, I admire Lyric. She loved Summer even when the illness took over and she was hard to love. She was a brave little girl who had to stand up to the entire school, and defend her sister.Every day before their father got home from work at 11:00 at night,Lyric took care of Summer. Their dad was a kind-hearted man also. He loved Summer just as much as Lyric did, and he protected both his daughters. If you are a middle schooler who loves great stories about people your age, I recommened this book for you. It is wonderfully writtenand and a great book.

Would be fantastic if it weren't for the music
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
This is a great story, and beautifully read. Unfortunately it's ruined by horrible synthesizer music, over the beginning and end of the chapters.
    Another Wonderful DWJ Book
Chronologically the first Chrestomanci book (though I think it is better to read "Charmed Life first) and a wonderful book.
I only have two problems with this version, firstly it is abridged which is a shame, secondly the narrator who is mostly good makes one or two of the characters have annoying whiney voices which, for me, grated.
As a whole I like this audiobook, but whether I will listen to it again I'm not sure.
However, let's have more DWJ books please Audible :)

    Fantastic Story For All Ages
Malia Ann Haberman exhibits her amazing talent through her story Chase Tinker and the House of Magic. I read it all in one day and refused to put it down--- Er, close my Kindle app on my computer, to be precise. Her character, Chase Tinker, develops throughout the story in such a "magical" way. I cannot wait for the next to watch Chase develop, and, hopefully, to see where he is going with Persephone.
If you are unfamiliar with the story, it is about a young boy named Chase and his younger brother Andy who have to deal with coming into strange new powers without the support of their magical father. He's gone missing. So when the boys finally share their lack of knowledge of their powers with each other, they were surprised to find the grandfather, who was supposed to be dead, at their door. They go with him back to the magical home that belongs to the Tinker family, and wonderous things happen as they gain knowledge about their family heritage, powers, and things they weren't supposed to hear.
