Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Honestly I've never heard of a NEECROmancer but I have heard of a NECROmancer. Don't waste your time and credits on this until they release it with a narrator that actually can do a good job. Chet sucks big time. I've never heard so many characters sound the same and most of the time you weren't able to tell when the narration stopped and a character was talking cause Chet was so montone.

Wonderful start to a series

Sarah Bennett doesnt remember anything about the night her mother took a fatal fall down the stairs in their home. Several people believed Sarah was behind her mothers death. She was sent to live in an exclusive asylum. Sarah still was not able to remember anything about her mothers death a year later. Her father has her to come home for the anniversary of her mothers death in hopes this will help Sarah remember what really happened. Upon arriving at home Sarah finds that her father has remarried a much younger lady. Sarah is determined to remember what happened and clear her name but during her investigations, she discovered a dark family secret.

This is a well-written mystery with a lot of suspense. I really enjoyed Sarahs characters and I really felt for her and wanted her to remember what happened to her mother. The setting in the book really adds to the story and enhances the storyline. This is a great start to a new to me series. I will be checking out more of this series.

I listened to the audio version of this book. The narrator Lillian Yves as a pleasant voice and is easily understood. Her storytelling ability is definitely an enhancement to the story.

I received this audiobook as a prize, all opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.

Great story; production needs work!

Full disclosure: I purchased and read the print version three or four months ago, but was given a free audio file in exchange for an honest review.

Having read and loved the print version of this book, I was more than excited to receive a promotional credit for the Audible file, because I'm an audiobook junkie. (Aren't we all?) But I found that this book is, if the audio stands as it is without further editing, much better in print.

This book is what I consider neo-gothic. Not quite as brooding as earlier gothic mysteries (see Du Maurier, Stewart, Michaels, etc.) the story nevertheless has all the right elements along with the necessary dollop of the supernatural.

Wicked horror; great read

I don't watch horror movies or read horror much for one simple reason: I don't have the stomach for it. But this book and its prequel were referred to me by a friend, so I took a chance. OMG - this book is wicked. She part two is even nastier than book one. If you like horror and suspense, you'll like shadows and teeth.

No holds barred horror

This book doesn't hold back. It's horror, without being overly gory or lewd. These ten stories are about different horror topics. Werewolves, roadway demons... and what happened to that pregnant woman in that one story really got me.

Just what you need to read on Halloween... or whenever you want to shock your nerves!

Caution! Do not read this on a full stomach! Otherwise, you are very likely to lose it's contents (especially when you read "Toll Road). And listening to these stories on Audible only enhances that queasy feeling. And if you're thinking about food, I doubt you'll ever eat turnips again after reading "We All Ate The White Flesh". Ugh!

With less than a week to go before it is Halloween, I got the urge to listen to this audio, which was provided to me by Antonio Simon, Jr. a few months ago. Perfect time to listen to HORROR! This is a collection of ten short, but terrifying, stories that will make you afraid to close your eyes at night.

So turn off the lights, light a few candles, pour yourself a big glass of merlot, and enjoy!

I'm not normally a fan of anthologies, but these were quite entertaining! This one is not for the kiddies since there is some rough language in some of the stories. Besides... it will give them nightmares. But for the grownups... great Halloween-time reading (or listening on Audible).

Great collection

This is one great collection of scary stories. "Dear Sir" is without a doubt the best werewolf story I've ever read. There's another about a supernatural turnip that will make your skin crawl. Fantastic piece of work right here. Highly recommended.

Vicious horror with teeth

I'd read the first book in this series and found it scary, but this book (book 2) is downright vicious.

More Mythos, new setting, solid story.

As opposed to the large urban Boston and greater New England setting of Red Equinox, Black January takes place mostly in "one" environment: a haunted house. However, the haunted house, as one could guess in a Lovecraftian story, is not merely "one" location. That said, Wynne does an impeccable job at making the Wade House seem like a larger setting than a mere haunted house.

As opposed to the "Fringe" feeling I got from Red Equinox, Black January definitely has more a post-911 "X-Files" feel. Considering the size of the investigation, this difference is completely appropriate.

In regards to the Lovecraftian references, Wynne still does a suburb job at making the Easter Eggs fun, but not distracting to newer readers. In addition, he added some of his own Mythos creatures, which makes their role is the story so much more exciting.

(Vague) Spoiler Alert: The one most minor flaw in this story is how Wynne handles the a death of a character. Wynne's writing is very powerful in how the death of this particular character is handled, not necessary because of how one feels about that character, but how the reader emphasizes with the characters and their struggle of their loss. The flaw in how this is handled is, personally, I wish this series was longer and the character died, in the same way, but later. However, the Spectra files, as I understand it, is meant to be a trilogy, so the time spent with the character is appropriate in that context.

When I listened to Red Equinox, the narrator, Susan Saddler, was a struggle to listen to at times. This is not fault of Saddler as the diversity of the characters required a boldness to each voice to prevent them from confusing the reader and sometimes the accents and dialects were striking enough to pull one out of the story. However, in Black January, I became more comfortable with Saddler's voices for the character and began to interpret her voices as their voices, which made the Wynne's story much more cohesive.

This is shaping up to be one hell of a series!!

There is something wrong with the Wade House. Really wrong. For one, it is difficult to locate. It seems to hover just at the edges of your vision. Once you find it though and step inside, it has a way of manipulating itself. Changing. Rearraigning. Something ancient and evil lurks inside. And its hungry. It wants out.

I first heard Oscars stories on the podcast, Real Ghost Stories Online. I as well as almost everyone else who listens to that show loves his stories and are always requesting for more! I'm glad he decided to write this book to share his very scary experiences with all of us to enjoy! Thanks Oscar!

What did you love best about The Book of the Dead: True Stories of Spirit Encounters?

I first encountered this book on my kindle device and enjoyed reading it so much that I put a review online, which I have copied below. Later I was gifted a copy of the audiobook, and it is now my preferred format for these stories. The book was great, but listening to the narrator's performance gave these stories an extra layer of grit and creep that will keep you on the edge of whatever you are sitting on. I am re-posting my original review below, with the additional comment that the audiobook is certainly my preferred version.

Review - This was a powerful read, and given that these are based on true events experienced by the author it is more than a little creepy, in fact, downright terrifying because this is happening to a young person. Presented in a rich first person narrative style, the author takes your hand and leads you along on his compelling journey. The descriptions are rich, and the flow of the tales feels more like real life and less like a carefully plotted piece of fiction, which lends to the sense of terror and urgency. It certainly gives the reader some thought about what it might have been like for themselves to be in that situation, to have people not believe you, to feel alone against the dark.

Still Feeling Cold

Only once before have I felt as bone-deep cold as I do having just finished "The Bleak December," and the book that did it to me was Dan Simmons' "The Terror", also in audio form.

The great thing about audiobooks is that you get every word the author wrote. There's no looking at the page, deciding it's all just description of some place that doesn't matter that much and skipping over it.

But if, like me, you listen to your audiobooks during your commute, you may find yourself rewinding more than usual to catch something in this one. Every time my attention wandered just a little, I found myself suddenly in the midst of a new situation or lacking some key detail. Summers writes leanly. Not as leanly as, say, David Morrell, but the focus of this book is very much on the story. And the setting. New Hampshire itself might as well be a character given how much it interacts with the other characters and services the story.

Some characters definitely distinguished themselves to me. Wes and Melody were immediate favorites. Gordon as well. The people in this story are real. Most are good, but flawed.

I thoroughly enjoyed the story, and if I didn't immediately want to dive back in and read it again, it was only because I need to warm up for a while first.

A Small Town Tale of Survival

Wow! One of the best pieces of fiction I've listened to. Kevin G. Summers' writing is all encompassing, it was like reading a Stephen King novel.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Bleak December?

I don't want to spoil it, but there was a distinct point where this amazing story with so many unique threads just came together.

Have you listened to any of George Kuchs other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, but I really enjoyed listening to Kuch. He has an enjoyable sound, sort of like Garrison Keillor from A Prairie Home Companion. He was the perfect choice for this book. His inflection, accent, and delivery were all pitch perfect.

Different

when I started this book I was not sure I would like it. It started off slow but then started slowly picking up speed. The emd was a bit anti climatic but a decent book. The narrarator did a great job and I think made the difference in this book. Decent book to add to your library.

interesting story

interesting read, clearly influenced by game of thrones, lovectaft, and the walkng dead, the refrenced to starks, winter is coming, and the "white walkers" joke later in the book and the mass of unexpected deaths, feels like it needs an afterward or something, it ends kind of suddenly

Must save Titus Crow!

The Clock of Dreams is the third novel in the Titus Crow novels and shows a big change in the narrative. Instead of the titular character, the protagonist is now Henri de Marginy. Having been bequeathed Titus Crow's TARDIS-like coffin and a magical cloak, he proceeds to go on a mission to rescue his friend and his friend's new wife from forces that have imprisoned them in the Dreamlands. Henri is a more grounded character than Titus Crow and more rounded. Those who expect a more traditional Lovecraftian set of scares will be disappointed as this is more a psychedelic sci-fi journey across the multiverse. Brian Lumley is clearly fascinated rather than appalled by the Cthulhu Mythos and there's a lot of beauty here instead of grotesques. I think every dedicated fan should check it out, though. If you don't mind the Old Ones being evil and the heroes being good as well as the former getting spanked badly ala Ghostbusters, this is definitely the series for you.

Great stories, terrible editing

I loved listening to these Bentley stories. Unfortunately, whoever did the editing did a really poor job. All the stories ran together like a single sentence. There was no pause to let me know a new story was beginning and I had to rewind several times because of this. It was confusing and frustrating.

Bentley Little, Volume 2

This audiobook was good, but not as good as Volume 1. A lot of the same stories were put on Volume 2 that we're from Volume 1. The narrator was ok. I think it would have been presented a little bit better if there were multiple voices narrating. It would have painted a better picture for the stories.

Quite Good!

Some of the stories are quite good and leave you wanting more, but keeping with the Noir feel of the era. They are short and sweet. Overall, I found them enjoyable.
