Father Rohr gives us a valuable insight to the context/times/culture that Jesus was teaching and clears up what we have either lost in translation or simply do not understand because of the language and major time barrier/gap.

Richard does an excellent job of laying the foundation for Matthew's presentation of Jesus' sermon on the mount. By the time he's finished with the foundation the actual text begins to fall into place much more easily and much more understandably.

I highly recommend this sermon to anyone who is deeply interested in the deep truths of the gospels or who is open-minded enough to learn of a new spiritual insight.

Exhilarating!!!

Having grown up in a fundamental Christian environment but now since left I have been trying to discover new ways of looking at God and Jesus and his message. This is far and away the best message I have ever heard. It feels one with Hope and exhilaration that the real truth of Jesus is accessible to everyone!

I would give him 6 stars but.....

RC Sproul has helped me with truth about My savior and God in many of his teachings and books that compliment the Gods word, I highly recommend this book because it will give you an amazing understanding of what true Protestantism has taught for hundreds of years and not the kind of Christianity that has no substance or root.

Don't Miss it!

This is is excellent treatise of the Reformed Faith. I cannot imagine a clearer presentation of these most needed Biblical truths, expecially in our generation. Listen and live!

Nothing stands out but the concepts are drilled down on to give the lay person a basis for understanding.

He is a good narrator for a dry subject. Not monotonous at all.

Oh no. A difficult subject and requires attention and rereading

It's up there. It's accessible to those without formal theological training, yet it's not elementary level either.

A Gem of a Book

I discovered Thomas Merton when I came upon Seeds of Contemplation while browsing in the stacks of a Library during the early years of my spiritual journey. He has been a spiritual companion and guide ever since. No Man is an Island is the sequel to Seeds of Contemplation. The titles of the reflections will give you a good taste of the content:

These are quite simply some of the most profound spiritual reflections I have ever read by any author from any period of history. Sentences On Hope is the finest exposition of the true meaning of hope, a subject of special interest to me, that I have ever read. The Word of the Cross is a stunning exposition of the meaning and use of suffering. The final chapter, Silence, is rapturous (I use the word advisedly). These reflections can be read and re-read. The sheer weight of the insight contained warrants many readings and many returns. The book is a gem.

The narration is good.

I have long wished Audible would offer for books of serious spiritual literature, especially from the Catholic Tradition. They seem to be moving in that direction. Thanks, Audible, for making such a fine volume available.

Good for thought and reflection

I've tried to read Merton a few times and it would always bore me, but this time I was ready and it spoke to my soul. It's my first book by him.

He can be dry and slow in a way, but I also found it wonderfully deepening. The book chapters are divided into the topics of living a life in Christ and in stillness. Parts of his message are probably quite agreeable to someone who appreciates Buddhism.

Merton does not defend his faith, does not try to convince the reader, yet has a certainty about the realness of Christ that shines through very clearly. As a continually doubtful Christian, I find his approach helpful for my own faith journey.

He is quite matter of fact and neutral in his tone and assumptions.

Very Good Book

I enjoyed this book a lot and perfect for pastors of the local church or Christian business leaders. The book production is sloppy though. Several places they need to edit where the reader actually says "let's do that again" and from one chapter to another, it's WAY to quick. You'd think the production value would've been better.

Last chapter is missing

The book was done well. Some words were incorrect with the text. The last chapter was skipped and not recorded.

I've added this to my list of books that every Christian leader should read. Correct that, every leader should read. Whether it's Christian Ministry, Christian business, Raven a secular endeavor, this book is for all who want to be better leaders.

My favorite leadership book.

I had read the book 10 years ago and was deeply moved. After recommending it to so many people, I thought it would be good to read/listen to it again. I wasn't disappointed. Bill Hybels hits it out of the park with leadership principles that pertain to everybody who leads anything.

The reader was good but there are a few quirky items. At one point he goofs up and asks to read it over - an obvious edit that was missed. There are also some missed 'pauses' where he jumps right into the next section without the natural pause that a reader would 'feel' when reading a book.

Time well spent

Though I'm not a rabid consumer of Beth Moore's work, I am never sorry to spend time in it. Her emotionality is sometimes a little over-the-top for my tastes, but I don't mind too much because it's sincere, AND because she is so theologically sound. And sometimes I even choke up a bit with her.

She loves the Lord, she loves His word, and she unpacks it well. I believe that this study came at a good time in my own life, and I found it enriching. I believe I do love Jesus even more for having read it.

My only concern toward the beginning was when she encouraged the reader, at some length, to imagine Jesus' physical appearance. It was well-intended, but it could easily cause people with a certain weakness to violate the spirit of the Second Commandment. Fortunately, she didn't continue to emphasize that activity.

As for the narration, I thought it quite good. It seemed to get better and better as it went along, too. Beth's emotionality would be easy to under- or over-do, but I believe the narrator got it just right.

A nuanced approach to worship

Gary Thomas gained some acclaim with his biblically solid exploration of marriage in Sacred Marriage. Our church recommended that book, so when I heard about Sacred Pathways from another respected source, I decided to give it a "read." His thesis is that, while scripture study and prayer should be a daily part of our lives, we all have our own innate needs and inclinations when it comes to worshipping God that may be satisfied in a variety of ways. Some of us have our hearts lifted to Him by being in nature, for instance, while others feel most connected to him via ritual or the senses. In all, he lists 9 pathways: the naturalist, sensate, traditionalist, ascetic, activist, caregiver, enthusiast, contemplative and intellectual. I immediately recognized my own primary path, but he encourages you to read the other chapters to identify secondary pathways. Thomas also identifies risk areas for each pathway. For instance, the naturalist may be at risk for worshipping the creation rather than the Creator.

All in all, a thought-provoking and interesting read. Having read it, I have a better understanding of why the question of church worship style can be so intractable. I gave it only 4 stars because Thomas reads the book himself, and while his voice is pleasant, I suspect a professional reader might have been better.

Gary Thomas is a very enthusiastic author and reader. He's very easy to listen to.

The book itself was so helpful. Not only did it help me identify my own "spiritual temperaments", but it also encouraged me to pursue other ways of connecting with God. This book was great for someone seeking to deepen their relationship with God.

I think one could mistakenly interpret this book as attempting to limit experience with God to one or two ways, but the author encourages readers to relate with Him in ways that might be foreign. He explains that Jesus had ALL of the spiritual temperaments - to really be like Christ, we should challenge ourselves to relate with God in new ways.

Spiritual "pathway" test

Great book that encourages Christians to relate to God according to how and who they are as individuals.

Each chapter has a "test" to help you discover which of the 9 spiritual pathways are strong and which are weak.

Kind of like those "Spiritual Gifts" Assessments.

Nice that the author read it.

I think this book will be around for decades.

Extraordinarily Helpful, unhindered by tangents

Gary Thomas' profound insight into differing "spiritual temperaments" can give very clear, systematic direction to anyone's pursuit of God. Sacred Pathways is presented in a structured format, making it helpful for future reference (as one will always have their favorite chapters). This book is not to be taken as law, but when one sees the heart in it, the profundity becomes clear.

cons: Thomas, the author/narrator, is a preacher. And, as a preacher, he tends to go on tangents. Some are necessary. Some are helpful.

A interesting revelation of Mr. Alcorn's past financial experience, that leads to a qualified personal perspective.

Helps to refocus money values and making "the main thing, the main thing."

a MUST READ for every christian person

As a theologian and wife a of a Bible college professor I think this book is not a book written by a man, is the word of God explained by a man. Randy reads his own book and makes it even more special since his inflexions and tones make the points more clear and penetrating. It is indeed life changing if you consider the Bible as your highest authority and you must read it with willing heart to do what the God calls you to do. It was a rough read and made me realize so many wonderful truths. This is a MUST READ, please get this book and find out how to get as much treasures in heaven as you can and hear the words "well done faithful servant".

This book will change the way we in America think about money and posessions. We must move beyond things and strive for God's kingdom.

A dose of clarity

Its my opinion that this book will offer the knowledge needed to satiate that longing built within each of us called eternity. I was in a debate with my roommate recently, The topic was absolute moral truth. Him an atheist, me a Christian posed the question. Why have we not killed each other off completely yet? Warning: Not the whole book "Heaven"

I downloaded this is a hurry thinking I was getting the book "Heaven". This is actually just a booklet sample of the book. Good answers, but not what I thought I was getting. I'm annoyed that I wasted a credit on what can be bought on paper or for Kindle for less than a buck. If you don't want the whole book, just a summary or overview, then this is for you.

Although brief, this powerful writing restored my faith in God. I am 83 years old and look forward to heaven.

This Book Found Me

When I needed most comfort in my life this book found me! All the answers I've ever wanted that lead me to be so so very afraid of death that I would have panic attacks are in this book and it's a huge relief to know being imperfect and making mistakes is natural as a human but god loves us all for the bigger broader picture of us! And to know that our death is not just a go to sleep and never wake up after putting fourth so much effort on earth is a great insight to have. Knowledge is always power and he will keep teaching us even on into the next life with him! Because of this book I'm not afraid any longer

Good. Not great

Apparently this is a section of a bigger book. I consider myself well educated, but some of the content in this requires re-listening as sometimes there's a lot to take in and digest as far historical quotes go. The authors use of biblical scriptures really on point but I can't say that on it's own this book changed me in any way. Nonetheless, it was the hour or so to listen to as there are some really good tidbits of information in here.
