Title: My Son and the Afterlife
Subtitle: Conversations from the Other Side
    Author: Elisa Medhus
    Narrator: Hillary Huber
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 49 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-10-13
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 171 votes
    Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Christianity
    Publisher's Summary:
Dr. Elisa Medhus never believed in life after death. As an accomplished physician, she placed her faith in science. All of that changed after her son Erik took his own life and then reached out from the other side. Intimate, heartbreaking, and illuminating, this audiobook takes listeners on an incredible journey from grief and skepticism to healing and belief. Based on Medhus's wildly popular blog, Channeling Erik, My Son and the Afterlife provides answers to the most universal questions of being human. At once tragic and uplifting, Erik speaks from the other side with candor, wisdom, and depth as he describes his own experiences and provides new answers about the nature of souls, death, and the afterlife - answers that have the potential to change our lives forever.
    Critic Reviews:
"Dr. Elisa Medhus offers a heartfelt, deeply moving story that invites [listeners] to question their own beliefs of love, loss, and the afterlife." (Eben Alexander, MD, author of the
    Proof of Heaven)

Consciousness, Reality, Why are we here
Open-minded skeptics will find this informative.
Elisa Medhus stated at the beginning of this book that after her son's death she read and researched books about the afterlife.
She specifically mentioned Tom Campbell's work, which I also find useful. (He is the author of the My Big TOE trilogy and has over 200 youtube videos to learn from)
The format of the book seems to be in chapters that are on a particular topic to do with what happens after death, or some aspect of reality beyond what most people are familiar with.
Within the chapters are transcripts of basically three people: the author, a "translator" (a medium who can see and converse with her son) and her son.
The questions the author brings to the many sessions are very good questions. Some of the follow up questions are perfect. I've read books to do with Consciousness and the construct of reality, why we are here, past lives, reincarnation, near death experiences, out of body travel to the astral and beyond, and some physics or science books related to these subjects, and have had some of these same questions. I'm so glad to have found this book and get quite a few questions answered.
The last portion of the book answered some pretty important questions people often have - such as what about animals, plants, rocks - do they have consciousness or souls - what about God? - what about Jesus? - what about other famous enlightened people - Budda? Gandhi? others? what about angels - more really interesting information about animals (like our pets who can be with us through various lives and even multiple times in one lifetime) and also about those that endure suffering - and what about suffering people? what about these physics theories? what about telepathy? or that tunnel? or what about people who believe this or that or nothing at all?
Sometimes the chattiness of the transcribed conversations did get a tad annoying, but it was a whole lot better than stuffy science wording. So, unless the target audience is conservative scientists who need to open up their limiting belief systems, the book is just fine.

    Publisher: The Great Courses
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 178 votes
    Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Christianity
    Publisher's Summary:
These 12 illuminating lectures paint a rich and detailed portrait of the life, works, and ideas of this remarkable figure, whose own search for God has profoundly shaped all of Western Christianity. You'll learn what Augustine taught and why he taught it and how those teachings and doctrines helped shape the Roman Catholic Church.
These lectures are rewarding even if you have no background at all in classical philosophy or Christian theology. Professor Cary explains any special religious or philosophical concepts you need to know in order to appreciate Augustine's impact, with real-life examples and analogies that make even the most subtle concepts clear and easy to understand. You'll gain a sense of what Augustine was saying, how his own experiences led him to say it, and how his thoughts fit into the theological, philosophical, and political worlds that swirled around him.
First, you'll study Augustine's life, with a three-angled look at the Confessions, his great spiritual autobiography, written when he was a 45-year-old bishop. Then, you'll investigate key concepts of Augustine's thoughts on faith and love, grace, original sin, the Church, and more. And finally, you'll gain a greater familiarity with Augustine's concept of persons, both human and divine, by focusing on his great work, The City of God.

    Very thoughtful and well executed.
I'm in the process of committing 200 hours this year to studying philosophy. I have listened to many other great courses philosophy series and found them enlightening. I wasn't expecting much in particular from this particular course but the contributions this man made to western thought simply cannot be ignored. many of these ideas are still alive and well in both contemporary religious and secular thought. well done, teaching company. and a great value, as well.
    Core principles
I found it to be a very easy lesson and enjoyed it very much. However I think that the serious listener will have to listen to it two or three times to fully absorb the detailed meaning. There is a new biography on audible about Augustine. I would strongly suggest listening to it after reviewing this lecture. Then follow up with the other great course on Augustine. I personally am not Catholic but enjoyed this course all the same.
    Awesome
Great job Augustine . Very smart . Great book to listen to. Great points . Bravo
    Good, but problematic in parts.
In chapter 9 the professor gives an incorrect teaching about Augustine's understanding of the sacraments. He says that Augustine believed they were signs rather than efficacious signs. This completely contradicts Augustine on the necessity of infant baptism and his teaching in De Doctrina Christiana. He concludes the lecture by declaring that Augustine should have taught something else about baptism, since it contradicts his teaching on sacraments.

    Title: Jesus and the Gospels
Author: The Great Courses, Luke Timothy Johnson
    Narrator: Professor Luke Timothy Johnson
    Format: Original Recording
Length: 18 hrs and 30 mins
    Language: English

    Publisher's Summary:
For most of the last 2,000 years, questions about the figure of Jesus have begun with the Gospels, but the Gospels themselves raise puzzling questions about both Jesus and the religious movement within which these narratives were produced. Is it possible to shape a single picture from the various accounts of his life given us by these Gospels?
But it is the figure addressed by the Gospels who dominates these lectures, sometimes in ways less familiar than the portrayals of Jesus we most often encounter. Beyond the portrayal in the synoptic gospels, you'll study what the apocryphal narratives have to say about the childhood of Jesus. Among other things, you'll also learn about the source of Roman Catholicism's doctrine of Mary and examine the 2nd century faith of Gnosticism.

    Thorough wideiranging overview of scholarship
Prof. Luke Timothy Johnson's course about Jesus and the Gospels is wide-ranging and very informative. It starts with the question of the historical Jesus, where-after Johnson deals with each of the canonical gospels, Mark, Matthew, Luke and John helping to get a grip on these texts from a literary perspective. I found this part of the course not always easy to listen to, especially since there is no PDF or other written study guide available from Audible when you buy one of 'The Great Courses' audiobooks. I think it is essential to have it available. After the Canonical Gospels Johnson mode into the Apocryphal Gospels like the Pro-evangellium Jacobi and also the Nag Hammadi texts, like the Gospel of Thomas and the Gospel of Truth. I found the extra-biblical material very interesting.
Prof. Johnson is fairly easy to listen to, very enthusiastic and that is what makes it a great listen. He furthermore speaks with authority. He holds a more conservative stance on various issues, like the dating of the Gospel of Thomas, but gives a fair and well-balanced account of current scholarship.
I would recommend this course to anyone who has some time to just focus on Jesus and the Gospel. It comes highly recommended.
    Searching for truth
The author covered a wide range of thoughts, leaving no stone unturned. Excellent work!! I highly recommend it.
A good overview and honest scholarship
What made the experience of listening to Jesus and the Gospels the most enjoyable?
I like that Luke Timothy Johnson discusses the general overall scholarship, informs listeners when his opinion is being offered, and he would rather offer reasonable interpretation over sensationalistic theories. I would recommend this overview to those who want to go deeper in this field.
    Good Catholic Overview
This is the second lecture series I listened to from Prof. Johnson. He is extremely well prepared and keeps the topics interesting. I clearly has no use for the search of the "Historical Jesus" and makes a pretty compelling case for why that search is futile and irrelevant.

    wow!
(Audible review). Outstanding! Suddenly my 90-min commute wasn't long enough! I knew early in the book that this was going to be special. I hung on to every word! Will be a guiding companion on my journey.

This book points the way to the father. It incorporates Pope John Paul 2 and St. John of the Cross and many other saints and Doctors in order to add merit to the writings of the book and. A must read.
Had to take it in twice in a row.
I tried reading St. John of the Cross once and found that I was neither intellectually or spiritually prepared for his Ascent or Dark Night. After listening to St. Terese's Story of a Soul and Come Be My Light from the writings of Blessed Mother Teresa (both through audible.com), I found this book which explained simply and beautifully the spiritual journey to God based on the writings of these and other Saints. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who has recognized in himself or herself even the slightest desire for God. (The four star performance was only because the narrator sometimes mixes pronouns or reads incorrectly based on a comparison with the eBook version.)
Deep lessons and so easy to listen to!
In the past 2 years I have listened on my Audible to the individual writings of these great teachers and doctors of spirituality. Ralph Martin has done a truly amazing job of making connections between them to allow us to see the commonality of their teachings as well as the depth of individual spiritual lessons they have to teach us.
The narrator was an excellent choice. His clear soft voice was so easy to listen to and did not distract from the message but pulls you in.
Pull up an easy chair and sit down and learn. Or do as I do and listen on those long road trips.
Either way please get this. You will be so glad you did.
    A favorite audio book
The author, Ralph Martin, has studied and taught on the college level classes on some of the well known saints he quotes from. For me book has been a great Christ centered guide to the spiritual life . Plus the narrator is easy to listen to.
This book keeps on teaching me for I have listened to it three plus times and each time I get something more out of it.

    Narration isn't bad at all!
I almost didn't buy this book because of the reviews about the narrator. Oh my goodness - have these people never attended a lecture?? This is not a professional narrator but it's certainly not terrible. The reader appears to be an older man and sounds a bit like a professor. While I wouldn't want to listen to a full size story by him this small 2 hour work is just fine! And the truth is there aren't any other audio versions available. So I've been able to work out in the yard AND listen to a profoundly deep book. I'm a happy camper.
    Worst Audible Performance So Far
This performance is so awful it makes it unlistenable. It is extremely difficult to understand and hear the reader. I consider this purchase a big waste of money as now I need to go read the actual book since I couldn't stand listening to it. Such a disappointment.
    Human Narrator or AI?!!!
This is a very powerful and important work by one of the greatest men in the history; a man who, I believe, knew more about the Plan of Salvation and the Heavens than any other man to ever walk this Earth, excepting only Jesus Christ Himself. I strongly encourage the reading of this book. It deserves 5*s.
That being said, the narrator is so monotone that he sounds like a low grade computer voice. It is the worst narration I have heard from any other reader since becoming a member of Audible & whoever cast this reader should be fired. I don't expect Will Wheaton or Tim Curry to narrate every book, but this reader's monotone and amateurish narration offends my ears. It is for this reason that I give it 4* (the book deserves 10* and the reader deserves -3*). I am grading not only the book but the narration as well, in other words the Audible version of this book. I will avoid all audio books with this reader.
Read the book! Avoid the audio version with this reader! Unless you have insomnia and want a sleep aid.
    Dry reader powerful writing!
Yes, the reader is a bit dry. But, the text is not an easy read. :-) It takes focused listening, but what a POWERFUL text!
    Production quality is awful!
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Adam Tervort?
The narrator has an awful voice. It sounds like he is going to break down and cry.
    Any additional comments?
Wow! The production quality is really bad. At one point he makes this "arrrgggh" noise and the repeats the previous sentence. It just sounds like an amateur decided to record this.

    LIFE CHANGING
I started going through this book, with the idea that I'd use it to get back in the habit of praying daily. There was also a desire to focus on gratitude, in spite of... difficulties...
It's been about a year...or is it two now, that I've been using this book, nearly every day, as part of my morning routine.
In that time, there have been many positive changes in my life, most notably, my outlook. Much credit is due to the daily practice of praying with gratitude. I have JOY! This joy I have, has been absent since childhood. I've been searching for it EVERYWHERE since then.
    ~~
This book is well written and the narration is absolutely perfect.
The daily prayers are short enough to get through, without my mind wondering. And when it does, I just rewind 30 seconds...
Some days, I think that the topic is not applicable to my needs at the moment. However, as I finish, I feel closer to God and in the right place to begin my day.
Everyone close to me has expressed seeing a change in me. While not entirely because of this book, much (graditude:) is due.
Highly Recommend: 21 Prayers of Gratitude
I'm at a time in my life were I am fighting cancer
This audible book helped mymintal attitude about fight.GOD BLESS ALL YOU.Stay in prayer and be THANK full to OUR LORD and As .
    Helpful and enjoyable but...
I enjoyed the spiritual nudges that the writing provided. The narration seemed slightly stilted and false. This material would be one time I would prefer a more 'conversational' and 'real talk' delivery, not a performance or 'oratory.'
It would be useful if each of the 21 days would equate to different "chapters" (instead of having to create a 'note' with each prayer/day).
    No-no
Dont recommend it!!!! This book filled up with negative misarable thoughts. It will not help to overcpme negative though, for sure.
Easy to listen to it over and over...quick read
I enjoy listening over and over again. It is helpful to listen in the mornings as I start my day.

Really enjoyed hearing this audio book.
I recommend this book to all leaders that want to make a difference. It's advice is simply yet profound. A great bless to the church of today.
    required reading for any ministry
There is no shortage of resources on better ways to do ministry. The question is, are they useful? This book is literally one of the most valuable books written. While it is NorthPoint centric, the principles are timeless. And honestly, if there were more teams focused like NP, would that be a bad thing?

Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 154 votes
    Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Christianity
    Publisher's Summary:
Whether listeners are devout believers or distant seekers, The Idolatry of God shows that we must lay down our certainties and honestly admit our doubts to identify with Jesus. Rollins purposely upsets fundamentalist certainty in order to open listeners up to a more loving, active manifestation of Christs love. In contrast to the usual understanding of the "Good News" as a message offering satisfaction and certainty, Rollins argues for a radical and shattering alternative. He explores how the Good News actually involves embracing the idea that we cant be whole, that life is difficult, and that we are in the dark.
Showing how God has traditionally been approached as a product that will render us complete, remove our suffering, and reveal the answers, he introduces an incendiary approach to faith that invites us to joyfully embrace our brokenness, resolutely face our unknowing, and courageously accept the difficulties of existence. Only then, he argues, can we truly rob death of its sting and enter into the fullness of life.
    Critic Reviews:
"Caveat emptor. Let the [listener], the Christian, the skeptic beware, for with
The Idolatry of God, Peter Rollins has taken his theological programme of turning everything we believe upside down to the next level. Not content to simply subvert how we believe, Rollins now turns his attention to what we believe. If you dont want your faith challenged, do read this book." (Tony Jones, theologian-in-residence at Solomons Porch and the author of
A Better Atonement: Beyond the Depraved Doctrine of Original Sin)
    Members Reviews:
    A Lot to Think About
What a breath of fresh air! To say "I know," in the context of theology, is a form of idolatry. Understandably this is not an idea that will fit well with conservative and evangelical Christians. After all, the basis for various denominations is "we have insight into 'truth' that you don't." We "know!"
Rollins destroys this assumption brilliantly. That been said, it is not necessary to agree with everything he says to appreciate this book. I purchased this book based solely on the subtitle "Breaking our addiction to certainty." During the first chapter I started to wonder. Rollings makes a big issue of a sense of loss that we all feel, is at the core of our being, and has something to do with the birth experience. Well, maybe, and as my teenager would say "Whatever!"
Once past that, however, I became captivated. I would urge all believers to read/listen to this book. Yes, it will make you uncomfortable but it will make you think.
    Finally.
Finally an honest theology on God and Christ that I can understand both logically and that resonates with my soul.
Rollins discusses faith, religion, doubt, and Christian concepts. He does so in a way that makes sense and sits well with not only the scriptures but with doubt and ones deepest fears and hopes. He tackles the hard stuff. He tackles the "simple truths", the simple truths that may not be true at all. He investigates why we often don't question and why we should question.
Again, all I can say is finally. Finally someone that has had the same struggles and thoughts. Finally someone that has worked through this and shared it in a way I can follow. Finally I have a clearer path of what my faith and doubt are good for.

"Just because I'm a Christian and I'm trying to articulate a Christian worldview, doesn't mean I've got it nailed. I'm contributing to the discussion. God has spoken, and the rest is commentary, right?" Rob Bell

    Rob Rocks It
I read this book 8-10 years ago and probably loved it more this time on audio. Rob's cadence of ideas and insights on a version of a Liberating-Fun-Loving-Downcast-Friend to Degenerates Jesus....is my kind of Jesus.
Rock solid without the cheese ; )
I have always loved Rob Bell. I was lucky to live in Michigan in the heyday of Mars Hill and hear him speak there once back in 1999. I hate that he has become largely misunderstood and misquoted over the years. This book, like all of his teachings, somehow reveal and create a picture of Jesus that deep down you already know exists, but few are as bold or able to make so real. Rob has done for Christianity what Tiger Woods has done for golf: brought it to a whole new level. I think a lot of modern church planters are afraid to admit the impact he has had on the progressive Evangical movement. Reading this makes me actually want to be a Christian again! If you can get past some of the microphone hissing here and there, the insights will forever haunt your understandings of scripture.
A book every person seeking God should read.
A breath of fresh air. Love Rob's work. I track with him on so my levels!
    Refreshing
Powerful thoughts to ponder. Most know that the Christian church in America has been missing the point for a while now. This book helps to put your finger on it. Very challenging, liberating & refreshing.
    Best book for life
This book radically changed my life and continues to challenge everything I grew up with. this book gave me spring theology and the reason why Jesus is good for me today. I decided to start living to love other people because of this book. I gives me wings. Rob, thank you for sharing your heart and passion. I am a better man
    because of you.
