You guys just keep getting better

It seems like each of Harmon's books gets better than the last. I never felt there were any dull or filler pieces in the book. The ending was great though it has me wishing the next book were out so I could dive right in.

Jeff Hays was his usual exceptional self. Annie Ellicott provided an exceptional voice for the female characters. She had a much bigger part in this book and I hope she continues in more works with Jeff.

A great addition to the series. The whole crew is back and along with them we meet an NVA Seed and the giant Lothar. They continue their journey to stop the source code bomb, but not without completing their quest to take out the Drachma Killers first. The story ends at a major climax, leaving you wanting to start on the final story right away to find out how Oric will deal with the fallout from The Drachma Killers.

Jeff Hays does a great job once again with his narration, distinctly voicing characters and accentuating the game world with INSTAKILL and CRITICAL HIT sounds.

Nice progress

The book definitely ends on a cliffhanger, but felt it was a great short story. The progress moves along well and never felt slow or boring. The descriptive dialogue helps you visualize it and Jeff Hays narration brings it to life very well. Once again great narration and great story.

Very good

The Impossible Wizard is a very good book. I really enjoyed listening to it the narrator did a wonderful job in reading the book and making it come alive. The writer did an excellent job in writing a good plot and keeping your attention throughout the book. I would have liked to learned more about Conryu though.

Great Start!

This book is a great start to an entertaining series! The narration is wonderful and the story is super interesting. My only issue is that the story just sort of stops. Your left missing something. The person who should be the main character is not present in the last quarter of the book. If the series was not presented to be wrapped around the one character then this would be fine, but since it is, I think we needed a bit more from him.

I am excited for the second book!

I was immediately intrigued by the prospect of following a young man who thinks he has his life planned out only to find he is, shockingly, the first male wizard since possibly Merlin. His world is going to be upended because he has not been trained in any way in magic. No males are. And to top it off there are various groups who now want to kill him for upsetting the order of things and being an aberration. The book follows the police investigation of the attempted murder of the young man.

The negatives for me are that: 1.) There is no real description of the world where the story takes place. How does magic fit in this world? Is there any theory as to why only females can be wizards? 2.) The main character seemed to be away through a good part of the story and as a result i didn't get a good feeling of back story for him. 3.) We never made it to the wizard college which I was looking forward to (Not expecting Hogwarts here).

Assuming these things are addressed in later volumes my negatives are relatively minor.

The book is well written and Mr. Hempel does an admirable job of telling the story. The pace is good and I really liked the action sequences.

I do recommend giving this book a try. I know I will be looking into the second book in the series.

pretty great

Yes I do recommend it for everyone. when I started it, I could not put it down. That might not be the same for other readers. I could not shack this feeling that somethings were missing from this book.

one of the best books I've read in a while

this was one of the most interesting books I've read in quite a long time!

So slow

I am not sure if it was the narrator or the story, but this book comes across as unbearably slow. I even upped the speed and still could not take more than two hours before wanting to break my phone.

this is an amazing borderline RPG

well this is not strictly RPG it is an amazing start to a serious that has potential not only in its fights but as a potential to begin a new series of World building hopefully he can build on this also well this book dust touch on real world potential for helping people with mobility issues hopefully in the next books he can truly start to include this with a stronger secondary theme

when someone's just unrealistically nice

The m.c. here is pretty naive, and has a weird hatred of charity for a guy who literally can't do much of anything.

He also gets surprised every time he gets attacked by the same guild, and is shocked that people on the internet are rude. I think this kind of naive character is just a cheap way to show character development.

Paranormal/sci-fi storytelling at its very finest

A bunch of scientists on a research vessel above the Mariana Trench, being attacked by killer mermaids? To some it may sound too crazy but know that this is paranormal/sci-fi storytelling at its very finest. There's the familiar nerdiness of sci-fi and the mythical theme of paranormal, but there's also that special something that takes this story from good to great.

I lost track of the number of characters whose thoughts and ideas I got to follow and each of them had their own distinct voice and part in the story. And in the middle of all the action and craziness, there was still room for relationships to grow and moments where I as a reader got to laugh.

Here there be monsters

The latest work of speculative sci-fi/horror fiction by Mira Grant (aka Seanan McGuire) combines the author's greatest talents for creating near future technology, memorable characters both sympathic and decidedly not, and throwing this mix into the path of a monster with just enough scientific believability to be that much more terrifying.

After a film crew is lost at sea and monstrous footage from the voyage shows a slaughter by creatures that shouldn't exist, a group of scientists sponsored by an entertainment company set forth to find answers to the question of whether mermaids are real. This being a Mira Grant joint, they find much more than they bargained for.

Fans of JURASSIC PARK, THE ABYSS, and thrillers like RELIC will relish the passages where the author indulges in gleeful pulp horror, but there's a sense of wonder, discover, and humanism that elevates this book far above the usual fare. The pace is relentless, the twists delightful, and there's even some surprisingly sweet romance along the way.

And also, killer mermaids. Which are, if possible, even more rad than they sound.

No Fast Forwarding required

This story kept me hooked, intrigued and in suspense. In my opinion there was none of the contrived character development or fudged fillers. What I did find was interesting backstories to people and plot so wonderfully intertwined into a well written story.

Another Gem

Fantastic to anyone addicted to the world of Malaz! Great to see the early days of the making of an empire.

Everything I've wanted from a prequal.

If you have never read the Malazan series, this trilogy is a perfect starting place for gaining a foothold in the universe. It manages to ease the way past the steep learning curve of the Erikson's works, which are my all time favorites, but still keeps the intrigue and epic scale to a brilliant fantasy world. If you have read the Malazan books, this series may change your perspective on certain characters from the Erikson's books, but that is nothing new with a prequal. I believe he has made the entire Malazan universe stronger and more appealing to those who view a 10 book series as too daunting a task. As always, Esslemont flawlessly compliments the Malazan universe with each and every new novel he produces. I cannot wait for the next one! Maybe we will get a short story or two in the meantime with some of the characters or Ascendants. Must read if you like Action Fantasy or High Fantasy.

I wanted to love this and I tried

I first read Maguire when Wicked was published and have read every book hes published. Ive loved almost all of them. I was excited to see this but the reviews had me puzzled. Still I downloaded it because Im a big fan of his storytelling.

Thats why Im sad to say this book just wasnt good. The narration was excellent and that may be the only reason I pushed through. The story has potential but just goes nowhere at all. Im not even sure what, besides the location, this has to do with The Nutcracker. I kept waiting for explanations or connections that just NEVER happened. Its like the publisher had some leftover stuff and threw this together and called it a novel. When it ended I actually had to go backwards a chapter or two because I couldnt believe it was done. I thought I missed something but nope, just....not good. And Im the last person that wants to write this about Maguire.

Definitly not a childrens Fairy Tale

Very sexual, sad, and slightly dark. Story of lost childhood. Deals with many uncomfortable issues such as suicide and incest.

I struggled to finish. I don't like Gregory Maguire as a story teller. The characters are not likeable and the storyline doesn't flow. He somehow made Germany and the story of the nutcracker boring. I was disappointed I listened to this book. The narrator is articulate and does a good job reading.

Another literary triumph!

John Crowley's newest novel is a welcome return to the fantastic. Originally, I was a bit apprehensive about getting an audio version of this book. Little, Big and The Solitudes can be challenging to listen to in audio format, but Ka is perfect for listening to and performing other tasks, ie cooking or exercising. I highly recommend it and will probably buy the print version anyway. Mr. Crowley's narration is excellent!

Loved this series and audiobook did it immense justice

Waited years for this finale and the audiobook does what they do best, bring an unparalleled level of realism and atmospheric magic. Got to hand it to the narrator for giving his all

Assuming that you know the Warhammer universe and play Age of Sigmar, these short stories read like the battle report from a table top war game. They are entertaining enough to fans of the series but there are better Warhammer novels than these if you are not familiar with AoS. The narrator though is superb and whilst the Stormcast Eternals are 2 dimensional he does his best to differentiate them by accent and tone. The narrator really earns his money when it comes to the chapters with Tzeentch and Nurgle demons.

Fun to those who already like the AoS mythos.

Good way to learn the lore.

I listen to these while painting and enjoyed this one more than the first, definitely helped when new factions started to come into it rather than constant Khorne vs Stormcast battles.
