Title: Down Among the Sticks and Bones
    Author: Seanan McGuire
    Narrator: Seanan McGuire
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 4 hrs and 4 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-13-17
    Publisher: Macmillan Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 178 votes
Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Fantasy: Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
Seanan McGuire returns to her popular Wayward Children series with Down Among the Sticks and Bones - a truly stand-alone story suitable for adult and young adult listeners of urban fantasy, and the follow-up to the Alex Award-winning, Hugo and Nebula finalist, Tiptree Honor List Every Heart a Doorway.
Twin sisters Jack and Jill were 17 when they found their way home and were packed off to Eleanor West's Home for Wayward Children.
This is the story of what happened first....
Jacqueline was her mother's perfect daughter - polite and quiet, always dressed as a princess. If her mother was sometimes a little strict, it's because crafting the perfect daughter takes discipline.
Jillian was her father's perfect daughter - adventurous, thrill-seeking, and a bit of a tomboy. He really would have preferred a son, but you work with what you've got.
They were five when they learned that grown-ups can't be trusted. They were 12 when they walked down the impossible staircase and discovered that the pretense of love can never be enough to prepare you a life filled with magic in a land filled with mad scientists and death and choices.

Spectacular fairy tale from an amazing author/narrator!
I always worry when I see that the author is narrating their work, because you know, story TELLING is usually distinct from STORY telling. But listening to Seanan McGuire, I actually had thoughts of olden days, when Bards were very highly valued and powerful people in society who were more like wizards than the modern image of a short-sighted writer in a fuzzy cardigan and glasses hunched over a typewriter with a cat nearby. M's. McGuire wrapped her voice, her bones-deep knowledge of the story and every word, every turn of phrase, around every utterance. She brings the compassion of the storyteller who knows and lives the people in the story, but also the dark foreknowledge that in old-school fairy tales, the heros (heroines) don't get to live "happily ever after."
I had already listened to and absolutely loved "Every Heart a Doorway" and was deeply impressed by that book's rich flavors and textures - but there wasn't enough about Jack and Jill. Together, the two short novels are far more than either could ever be alone, though the are also undeniably separate and different - like weighty though slim bookends.
Anyone worried about whether they will like a "kid's book" should think again. The old Grimm fairy tales were nobody's Goodnight Moon, and children who went astray suffered serious, often fatal, consequences. Seanan McGuire's pair of books are imho instant classics steeped in history, dangers (of modern parenting especially!), finding your place and coming of age, and real love of others, even when they don't necessarily deserve it. And regret that things happened as they did, and maybe - probably? - had to happen that way. Or did they?
Highest recommendation for this book, especially as the prequel to Every Heart a Doorway. Worth 2 credits despite the short length that always makes me wonder if a book is long enough to be "worth it." Yes.

Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Fantasy: Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
"My name is Larkspur, and I am an Elemental."
My people use the power of the earth to sustain life and defy our enemies. I should be at my father's side as a royal princess. But as a half-breed, bastard child, that isn't going to happen.
As an Ender, one of my father's Elite guards, it's my job to do as I'm told. When my older sister is sent as an ambassador to the realm of the water elementals - the Deep - I have no choice but to accompany her as her bodyguard.
With the death of the water elemental's King, a deadly battle for the throne begins; a battle we are forced to choose sides in.
There are only a few things I know for sure. The ocean may be beautiful, but lurking in its depths are monsters to fear, the water I tread is teaming with danger and I am on my own.
With no one to help, and no one to trust, I have to find a way to keep my sister safe, and stop a civil war.
But the secrets within the Deep are far darker than any of us realized.
    Welcome... welcome to the Deep.

    Great series starter but ....
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
No because there are no further audible versions of the remaining 5 books in the 7 book series!
Who was your favorite character and why?
    Larkspur
Have you listened to any of Lauren Fortgangs other performances before? How does this one compare?
I love Lauren Fortgang's readings! I ordered all that I could find!
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    Yes
    Any additional comments?
Loved the first two books in the series BUT not having the final 5 available on audible OR audiobook leaves me hanging and VERY DISAPPOINTED!
    Book 2
Wow! What an action packed second book! Who do you trust....well Lark of course! This book has court intrigue, lots of battles, multiple princesses, corruption, and lots of drama. Maybe even a little beginning of a love story.
Larkspur goes on her first mission.
Larkspur and her oldest half sister, Beladonna, are sent on a mission by the king. Belladonna as an ambassador and Larkspur to protect her. They are in danger as soon as they enter the Deep. The realm is being controlled by a man who wants to be king of all the realms. Every diplomat that travels there is killed or put into a cell permanently. Luckily Ash has followed the women so he can help them. Lots of danger, suspicion, threats and near death accidents occur. Very well narrated.
    Pure entertainment!
I have enjoyed all the books in this series, but this is my favorite by far. The characters are well developed with quirks and secrets, which I personally love.
This author has been a favorite of mine. I truly love her story telling. Cant wait for the next one.
    can't stop
I am ready to listen to the next book, I love the transition in the characters.

    Critic Reviews:
"Part historical fact, part fantasy, the effect is as intense as the events themselves. It's a fascinating read that will have you booking a flight to Mexico long before you finish the book." (Evening Standard)
    Members Reviews:
    It's Graham Hancock!* It's great.
I have enjoyed this trilogy so far. Not sure if this is the end or not.
    Fantastic story telling
I thoroughly enjoyed this trilogy, the story telling was amazing.
The way that Graham Hancock managed to perfectly blend history with fiction was absolutely awesome.
I got so attached to so many of the characters that I felt sad when I finished the third book.
These three books gave me a lot of knowledge about the history of that epoch in a way that I wouldn't have been able to just by reading into history books.
I also found myself googling a lot of the information and characters of the story, great stuff.
Thank you Graham for writing and publishing this trilogy and specially publishing it on Audible.
I must also applaud Barnaby Edwards for narrating this story so well, only a true professional can successfully perform so many different characters.
I most definitely recommend this trilogy.
Another fantastic book from Mr Hancock.
Will there be another episode? I hope so. Very well read by Barnaby Edwards, it was a pleasure to listen to.
    Fantastically Engaging
Amazing narrative creates a sense of living through these historic events with fleshy characters reincarnated by Graham's unique style. Now, back to the start of book 1, I'm listening again!
Love it! Another great book of Grahams.
The person reading the book could do a better job, not impressed by his performance. But the book itself is amazing.

  • And the Rest Is History Audiobook by Jodi Taylor

Title: And the Rest Is History
Subtitle: The Chronicles of St. Mary's, Book 8
    Author: Jodi Taylor
    Narrator: Zara Ramm
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 43 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-13-17
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 1054 votes
Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Fantasy: Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
Behind the seemingly innocuous facade of St. Mary's Institute of Historical Research, a different kind of academic work is taking place. Just don't call it time travel - these historians investigate major historical events in contemporary time. And they aren't your harmless eccentrics either; a more accurate description, as they ricochet around history, might be unintentional disaster magnets.
The Chronicles of St. Mary's tells the chaotic adventures of Madeleine Maxwell and her compatriots Director Bairstow, Leon Chief Farrell, Mr. Markham and many more as they travel through time, saving St. Mary's Institute (too often by the very seat of their pants) and thwarting time-travelling terrorists, all the while leaving plenty of time for tea.
You think you're having a bad day? Max is trapped in the same deadly sandstorm that buried the 50,000-strong army of the Pharaoh Cambyses II, and she's sharing the only available shelter for miles around with the murdering psychopath who recently kidnapped her and left her adrift in time.
She's no safer at St. Mary's. Tragedy strikes not once but several times, and with no Leon, no Markham, and no Peterson at her side, Max's personal life slowly begins to unravel. From the Egyptian desert to the Battle of Hastings, and from Bayeux Cathedral to the Sack of Constantinople, Max must race through time to save the ones she loves.
    Critic Reviews:
"A carnival ride through laughter and tears with a bit of time travel thrown in for spice...readers will be impatient for later instalments." (Publishers Weekly)
"Taylor has written a madcap and very funny hodgepodge of a novel whose pacing and humour is reminiscent of a Simon Pegg-Edgar Wright film." (Booklist)

    Darkest St. Mary's Yet...
Do not read this one if you're not in an okay place, because it is a roller coaster with more downs than ups. As usual, even the most depressing observations are given with a sarcastic and witty tone which we all know and love. The violence as well as the depressing moments have all been turned up for this one though, and it can be quite rough at times. I look forward to the next installment!
Max Is Able To Recover In Spite of Everything
Whew! I read this book with the same enthusiasm I've read the other seven in this series and all the books written by Jodi Taylor. I must say that they one had me feeling very lost midway through when Clive Roman showed up and then disappeared again. The Time Police are the ones who interfered in what was to be a mutually agreed upon surrender of Clive to Max. Instead they show up and Clive takes off in his pod but not until he threatens Max with 'I will kill everyone you love but you will live to suffer.' how awful is that? I worried all through the book that Leon was gone forever but learned a great deal about the Battle at Hastings and how William the Conqueror became King of England. It is always amazing to me how a historian like Jodi Taylor can write such books with such humor. What starts out as an unhappy set of circumstances turns out to be okay in the end. Read these books in order, you need to know the characters from the first book to understand the significance of things in each subsequent book. Book 8 wraps up some things left hanging in earlier books.

Not as good as the others
A very good series but I did not get as invested in this book. The story was just not as fun or quirky as the others.
    So much fun.
Gary, aka Merciless, has woken up in a community of brainwashed people but with the help of Nightgirl he escapes. Other Gary is using his powers to rule Gary's home place. It's, once again, up to Merciless and cohorts to save the world, but by doing so they may have to become something they never wanted to be!!
OK so this is book 4 and by now you would think that the story has slowed down and become stagnant, but not so!! This is just as fast paced and entertaining as the other ones. It's also a little darker and a little more serious, but still has the wit and geekiness that I've come to expect from these books. The writing flows well and the story is exciting, intriguing and as well written as ever.
The characters that we've come to love are all present here, plus we get a new addition that you just know is going to be amazing!!! Gizmo has all the traits of her mom and dad and I loved her character. I can't wait to see what she will be like.
It's getting hard to write reviews for this series because I feel like I'm repeating everything I've said before!! I love this series and this author and highly recommend everything he writes. Can't wait for the next one.
Jeffrey Kafer is one of the best in the business. He makes for a perfect Merciless because he can bring across his snarky manner perfectly and has a strong grasp on using the right inflection at the right time. Brilliant.
    Funny!
I really liked the first three books in this series, but this one was my absolute favorite! So much comedy gold and quotable quotes that I'm going to relisten and write down my favorites, just so I can use them when I'm telling people about the series. The narrator did an awesome job with this, as he has with the rest of the series. Worth every cent!
    Gets a little too navel-gazing
    Any additional comments?
So if your at this point in the series you know what's what with a Supervillainy book. Silly snark, pop-culture reference galore, wacky battles, and just and over the top power fantasy. Or I should say you knew what's what because in this book Phipps decided to give his main character a perfect daughter as part of the power fantasy. That decision to focus on family over superheroic sucks the life out of this book.
The humor goes from irreverent to family sitcom blandness and the story grinds to a screeching halt to switch focus on how adorable everybody is being.

awesome narrator and story. loved the characters and now since I'm impatient for the next audio book will need to buy the Kindle editions to hold me over.
starts out sloooooowww, but when it gets going!!
ok, this book started out really slow. but I just couldn't stop reading it. don't know why. all of the sudden I was hooked hardcore!!
    this is another good litrpg
Good story and good preformance. If your are a fan of litrpg stories you may like this story. The only reason it didn't get a 5 star is because the story setup has been done before. I will be buying the next book as soon as it becomes available.
so good! I'm totally addicted !
so easy to listen to , so much fun .
the narrator was awesome the story was great !
and it hints at something bigger going on without actually giving anything away.
if anything my only complaint was it took so long to get into the game world.
on the other hand both worlds are very compelling.
Not sure how I feel about this one...
Between literally HALF the book being the main character trying to thwart off sexual advance from an elf , and the ending being so abrupt that it isn't even a cliffhanger, just a cessitation of story, three stars is fair.
It was a fun read for a lot of the book. Hopefully the author can correct these flaws in any future installment , because despite its short length and shortcomings, I would enjoy reading more...

    Slow burner
This book is a lot slower than the normal scifi I listen to, and narrated by a female (also rare for me for some reason).
But I really enjoyed it and eagerly await the next in the series.
I'd recommend it if you're interested in Lovecraftian monsters and locations though it is a novel and not much like Lovecraft literature. The imagery is well written and evokes things properly through the senses.
But I also want to thank the narrator for doing possibly the best reading I've ever heard. It was absolutely flawless.
My only gripe for the book itself is that it was a little too slow at times and lost steam at the end. Still, it wrapped things up nicely which is something so many authors refuse or neglect to do - and given everything else I like about the book it's easily forgiven.
Magic, Cold War history, family, and survival
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
"Winter Tide" is a gripping mystery woven through with magic, cosmic wonder, and the taste of deep time. It is also a beautifully written meditation on surviving atrocity, creating family, and risking love in the face of mortality.
Just a few years after the end of WWII, US/USSR tensions are building and there are rumors that the Russians have acquired dangerous magical knowledge. The FBI asks Aphra Marsh for her help in their investigation. Though she has every reason to refuse to help the government that destroyed her home and family, there are equally compelling ones to leave San Francisco and her beloved adopted family the Kotos, with whom she survived the US internment camps, and go back east to Miskatonic University with Agent Spector.
"Winter Tide" is set in a Lovecraftian world, replete with books of ancient lore, fish people, godlike aliens, and cycles of life beyond human comprehension, but you don't have to have more than a passing cultural familiarity with Lovecraft's Mythos in order to be pulled into this book. Emrys' Miskatonic University and Innsmouth feel real and solid, her magical system well-thought out, her theology compelling and deeply felt. Her characters, alien and several flavors of human, are real people with fascinating back stories and complex motivations.
I also strongly recommend this book for long-time Lovecraftians like me. Emry's world-building is excellent, deepening our understanding of familiar characters and locations while finding many interesting new corners to explore. For example, Miskatonic feels like a real university with real students (complete with flighty undergraduates) instead of a convenient repository for forbidden tombs and statuary (and scholars prone to syncope).

    The only bad Mahanenko book
Unlike the author's other works, this book is exceedingly gritty, graphic, and dull. The narrator isn't nearly as good as his past works, and the mechanics of this LitRPG universe are fairly wonky and technical.
    Warning for younger/impressionable readers:
The book contains some extremely graphic incidents of violence right from the beginning. Expect bloody description of people being blown to bits and tearing out someone's throat to drink their blood. Expect explicit sexual references, which are far stronger than the author's other books.
Most, but not all of the curse words have been edited out in translation.
If that wasn't bad enough, the plot really struggles at some moments and the book feels about 5 hours too long.
    Not for kids
Finally a book that's not all about feelings. The characters do what they have to.
Some good parts, but mostly depressing unenjoyable
the first few hours of story plot is just painful and disinteresting. As a reader you are struggling to understand the motives or working of this world. Compared to the "Way of the Shaman" books, this serie is not nearly as well written to thought out... this version of the Beginning: Dark Paladin is a rough draft... I can not recommend this series as it is now
plot holes... plot holes every where...
the world lacks in gaming-logic. too many plot f#ck ups calling it the game don't make it one...
As flat as the narrators voice
The worst litrpg to date, and I've listened to quite a few. Uninteresting plot, stale characters, and poor translation from Russian to English. I've liked other books from this author in the past but this one is just plain boring and bad. The narrator doesn't help by narrating with all the emotional depth of Mr. Data.
Save your money on this one folks.

Now a TV Series produced by FremantleMedia North America available internationally on Amazon, exclusively through Prime Video and starring Ricky Whittle, Ian McShane, Emily Browning, and Pablo Schreiber.
Locked behind bars for three years, Shadow did his time, quietly waiting for the day when he could return to Eagle Point, Indiana. A man no longer scared of what tomorrow might bring, all he wanted was to be with Laura, the wife he deeply loved, and start a new life.
But just days before his release, Laura and Shadow's best friend are killed in an accident. With his life in pieces and nothing to keep him tethered, Shadow accepts a job from a beguiling stranger he meets on the way home, an enigmatic man who calls himself Mr. Wednesday. A trickster and a rogue, Wednesday seems to know more about Shadow than Shadow does himself.
Life as Wednesday's bodyguard, driver, and errand boy is far more interesting and dangerous than Shadow ever imagined. Soon Shadow learns that the past never dies...and that beneath the placid surface of everyday life a storm is brewing - an epic war for the very soul of America - and that he is standing squarely in its path.

Genius story from a genius author
One of the best stories of one of the best contemporary authors. Definitely worth listening.
    Interesting but not exciting
Interesting book with a good plot. On the slow side. Well written and narrated, but somehow it didn't excite me. It took me months to finish. Felt unfocused at times, and as if the protagonist had no drive or mission.
    Hmmm something was missing
I don't know, the book was fine but I kept feeling something else was missing, it didn't really trap me, maybe there were too many elements taking place but something quite not made it for me. It could have been a different, more intimate story, but there was too much information it became confusing and meh. Ok in general I guess.
    Awesome!
Loved the book. Characters were well written and the plot kept surprising me allover. Original idea still respecting old folklore and history. The narrator was good and brought story alive.
Very good performance and atmosphere, plot and writing could be better
I mostly liked the main characters and story, however there are a lot of quite boring side stories whose relevance is still a puzzle to me. Also, the main story is a bit slow and unclear at large parts of the book, it feels as if Shadow just drifts from place to place without a purpose for way too long.
